27 Quick Guide Setting the lang uage When the power is turned on for the f irst time, the language setting screen appears (for the LCD monitor display language). After setting the language, go on to the date/ti me setting (for printing the date and time on your photos).

30 Histogram Display When h istogram display is on, a histogra m appears in the l ower right co rner o n the LC D monito r scree n. A histogr am is a graph indic ating th e numb er of pixe ls on the vertical axis and the bright ness on the hori zontal axis.
31 Quick Guide Basic Shooting Now you are ready . Let's shoot! How to Hold the Came ra Hold the camera as illustrated below for best result s. 1. Hold the camera with both hands and lightl y press bot h elbows against your body . 2. Put your finger on the shutter button.
32 Prev enting ca mera shak e If the camera moves when you press the shutter button, the still image might not come out clearly (due t o camera shake). The mark displayed on the LCD monitor indicates that camera shake should be avoided under the current s hooting condition.

38 Using th e Zoom F unction If you use the Z (W ide angle)/ z (T elephoto) button, you can alter the size of the s ubject in your pho to without having to change your distance from it.
39 Quick Guide Shooting Close- Ups (Mac ro-Mode) Using the N (Macro) button allows you to take a tight close- up (Macro Photo) . It is good for shooting s mall subjects because you can get up to one centimeter (1/2 inch) away . 1. With the ca mera re ady t o shoot , press the N N N N button.
40 Using the Flash Press the F button to s witch between flash modes. By default, your camera is set to Flash Of f. From the front edge of t he lens, flashlight reaches about 0.2 to 5.0 m (W ) or about 0.15 to 2.9 m (T) when ISO sensitivity is set to AUT O.
41 Quick Guide Ho w to us e th e hot shoe Since the camera has a hot shoe, you c an connect an ex ternal flash (available in stores) for use. Adjust the expos ure using the ex posure compensat ion (P .78) or manual exposure function (P .87). For details, see the documentation that came with the external flash.

43 Quick Guide Shootin g with Sc ener y-Matching If you use the S cene Mode, you can select from among six types of still image modes and shoot automatically with optimal settings for that kind of sc ene. 1. Make sure the power is on and turn the Mode Dial to 4 4 4 4 .

49 Quick Guide Viewing on a T elevision Y ou can view still images you have t aken on a TV screen. The camera displays ev erything on the TV screen just as it would on the LCD Monitor . T o use your te levision for viewing, connect your camera to the television with the A V cable that came with your camera.

(Adju st) Butt on The ADJ button allows exposure correction, white balanc ing, and ISO sensitivity setting by fewer operations. 64 Manual F ocus Shooting (FOCUS ) When Auto-Focus does not focus as desired, you can focus manually (Manual F ocus). Manual focusing allows shooting at a fixed distance. When using a fixed shooting dist ance, it can be set to eit her Snapshot or Infinity ( ∞ ).

70 Shooting Co nsecu tiv ely with Different W hite Balance (WHITE B ALANCE BRA CKET) Three images are automatically recorded - a reddish image, a bluish image, and an image of the current whit e balance. This is useful if the appropriate white balance cannot be judged.

72 Using Long Time Exposure (TIME EXPOSURE) Y ou can select an exposure time of 1, 2, 4 or 8 seconds. By using long time exposure, you can capture the track of moving subjects such as fireworks and car lights, when you shoot a night scene. 1. T urn the mode dial to 5 5 5 5 .

74 Shooting Pictur es Automatica lly at Set Inter v als (INTE RV A L) Y ou can set the camer a to automatically take pictures at fix ed intervals. Y ou can set the shooting interval at any length from 5 seconds t o 3 hours, in increm ents of 5 seconds.

81 A V ariety of Shooting T echniques/Playback Changing Sen sitivities (ISO SETTI NG) The ISO sensitivity indicates how sensitive to light the f ilm is. A greater value means higher sensitiv ity . High sensitivity is suitable for shooting an object in a dark plac e or moving f ast and suppres ses blurring.
82 Setting Color Depth (COLOR DEPTH) Color depth of t he shot still image c an be selected from Vivid, Normal and Nut ral (Neutral). 1. T urn the mode dial to 5 5 5 5 or A/M . 2. This is useful for macro shooting on a tri pod with locked focus.

88 Shooting with Set Aperture (Aperture Prio rity Mode) T o shoot with a set aperture, follow the steps below . 1. T urn the Mode Dial to A/M. The cur rent f- numbe r and shut ter spe ed (AUTO) ap pear in the bottom part on the screen. 2. T urn the up/dow n dial to c hange the f-number.
