Chapter 1 Using Y our Camera Section 1 Getting S t arted This secti on ex plains ho w to get your camera re ady , from takin g it out of the package to prep aring to shoot.

11 1 Ho w t o Use the Mode Dial The Mode Dial is on the to p of th e camer a. The Mode Dial is us ed to sele ct the de sired mode a nd oper ation fo r shootin g and play- back (still ima ge viewing). 1. T ur n the Mode Dial to the sym- bol of the mode you w ant to use.
12 1 • The number of shots is for ref erence only . If the camera is used for long per iods od time for setting and p layback, the shooting time (the number of shot s) will decrease. • Other batter i es, such as manganese dry cell (R6) and Ni-C d, cannot be used.

Plug the power cord into an out- let. • Be sure to fi rmly att ach cables and p l ug in cords. • When you are not using the camera, unplug the AC Adapter from the camera and th e power outl et.
16 1 T ur ning the P o wer On/ Of f The camera is switched On and Of f as fol- lows. Turning the Camera On 1. Press the power button. After th e start s oun d, the flas h lam p and auto-fo cus lamp blink altern ately fo r sev- eral seconds.
17 1 Inser ting an SD Mem- or y Car d (Available in Stor es) Y ou can record the still im ages and movies you have taken i n the ca mera's internal memory o r on a n SD memory ca rd (avai lable in stores) .
18 1 3. Make sure the card is facing the right way and then push the card all the way in until it clicks. 4. Close the battery/card cover and slide it back into place. When loading the SD Memory Card, t ake care not to get any dirt on the card' s meta l parts.
19 1 Ho w to Use the LCD Monitor The LCD M o nitor can be u sed to view th e subjec t when yo u are sh ooting an image, as well as for pl aying back m ovies an d still i mages. Symbols and numbers indicat i ng the camera's sta tus and setti ngs are di splayed on the screen of the LCD Monitor .

24 1 Synchro Monitor Mode In Sync hro Moni tor mode, the LCD moni tor is ke pt of f (no display) except during the following camera operat ions. This mod e is ef fective fo r saving p ower consumption . Histo gram Display When histogram display is on, a histogram appears in the low er right corner on the LCD monitor screen.

26 1 The Basic s of the Sh ooting Men u/Pla yback Menu Operation T o displ ay the menu: 1. T urn the Mode Dial to 5 5 5 5 (Shooting Mode) or 6 6 6 6 (Playback Mode). 2. Press the M M M M button. The menu appear s. On the menu screen, yo u can move betwee n screens by pressing the #$ butto ns and betwee n items by pres si ng the !" buttons.

34 2 Ho w to Hold the Camer a If the camera moves when you press the shutter button , the still i mage might no t come out clea rly (due to camera shake) . The mark displ ayed on the L CD monitor in dicates that cam era shake sho uld be avoided under the curr ent shooting condition.
35 2 If the ca mera cannot au tomatically focus, the crossh airs in the center of th e LCD monit or turn re d and the auto -focus la mp in the lower le ft of the viewfind er blinks in green. • When the grid appears, t he crosshairs do not appear in the middle of the LCD moni- tor .
36 2 Once the shot is in focus, the e xposure and wh ite balance are fixed and the crosshair in the c enter of the L CD Moni- tor tur ns gree n, as do es the au to-focus lamp in th e lower lef t of the V iewfinde r . Check one o f these to make sure the subject is in focus.
37 2 W hen the Subject is not Center ed on Y our Com- position (F ocus Lock) When th e subject of you r compo sition is not centere d, you can compose you r picture af ter setting the focus and then shoo t.
38 2 Shooting with Scener y- Ma tching If you use the Scene Mode, yo u can select from amon g six types of sho oting mode s and shoot au tomatically wit h optimal settings fo r the scene . Y ou can select a mode fr om the fo llowing six type s, in Sc ene Mod e.
39 2 T o select a Scene M ode, fol low the steps below . 1. T urn the Mo de Dial to 4 4 4 4 (Scene Mode). The scene- selection screen appears. 2. Press the !" !" !" !" buttons to select the mode you want to use. 3. Press the O O O O button.
40 2 Shooting with Multi-Shot If you switch to Multi- Shot, you can shoot conse cutive images. This is conven ient wh en you wan t to capt ure th e moment . There are three ways to shoot M ulti-Shot s, "CONT", "S CONT" and "MCONT".
41 2 • The maximum number of images that can be shot in Multi- Shot mode depends on the image size and pictu r e quality sett ings as follo ws: • While shootin g with Multi-Shot , the LCD Monitor display t urns off . Compose your picture and secur e it using a tripo d, or use the V iewfinder .
42 2 Shooting with Multi-Shot Operatio n continued from the previous p age: 7. Compos e your picture, then press and hold the shutter but- ton. As long as you hol d the sh utter bu tton down, pictures contin ue to b e taken. 8. As soon as you release the shut- ter button, shooting stop s.
43 2 Shooting with Optical Zoom If you use the z (T el ephoto) : T/ Z (Wi de- angle): W buttons, you ca n alter the size of the subj ect in yo ur phot o without having to change your d i stan ce from the subject. (Equiv alent to a 35mm camer a's 28 to 100mm zoo m.
44 2 Shooting with the Digital Zoom The Dig ital Zoom functio n enl arges images by process i ng them . When you u se the digit al zoom, press ing the z (T elep hoto) butt on enlarges the subject even more than the specifi ed enla rgement rati o (opti cal zoom ).
45 2 Shooting Close-ups (Macr o Photo) Using the N (Macro) bu tton al lows you to take a ti ght clos e-up (Macro Ph oto). This fea- ture i s good fo r shooting flow ers, insect s and other sma l l subjec ts, because you can g et a clos e-up of one ce ntim eter (1/ 2 inch ) from the subj ect.

47 2 R ecor ding V oice Memos The voice recording t ime depe nds on the capa city of the SD memory card. • The inter nal memory al lows the same recording time as an 8MB SD memory card.

50 3 Using the Flash If you press the F (Fl ash) bu tton, you can switch into Flash Mode (Fl ash, Flash Of f, and other se ttings). Sw itch set tings acco rding to time, cond itions and yo ur prefer ence, and shoo t yo ur pictu res. From the fr ont edge o f the le ns, flashlight reaches a bout 0.
51 3 Using the Self-Timer Y ou can set the Self -timer t o shoot af ter either tw o or te n secon ds. If the person who takes the photo wan ts to b e in the st ill imag e as well, it is conveni ent to us e a setting of te n seconds; a setting of two second s is useful for pr eventing cam era sha ke.
52 3 Shooting a Still Image with Sound (IMA GE WITH SOU ND) Y ou can shoot a still im age with a voi ce memo. Af ter the st ill imag e is stored , voice recording st arts automa tically and can con- tinue f or up to eight seconds. Thi s func tion is useful f o r addi ng comm ent s on the st atus or content s of subje ct.
53 3 Using the ADJ . (Adjust) Button The ADJ button al lows expo sure correctio n, white bal ancing, and ISO sen sitivity setting by fewer operat ions.
54 3 Changing the Exposur e (EXPOSURE COMP .) The exposure set ting allows you to select brightness levels for yo ur shots. Normally , if your subject is cent ered , back- light compen sation is autom aticall y activate d, and you can shoot with cor rect expo sure.
55 3 4. Press the O O O O button. Exposure Compensation sett ings are compl ete d and the s ettin g value ap pea rs in the right-hand port ion of t he screen .
56 3 Using Na tur al and Ar tifi- cial Lighting (WHITE BA L A N C E ) With a no rmal camera, a white su bject may not be r eprod uced as white de pending on light ing ar ound the subject. Digital came ras have a func tion cal led Wh ite Balance, which a utomatically adjusts white balan ce so wh ite subj ects are re prod uced a s white.

The Shoo ting Menu close s and the set- ting valu e is displayed o n the upper l ef t of the scr een. Only except for scene mode, Thi s setting will b e used fo r shooting un til you chan ge it.
59 3 Sensitivity Settings (ISO SETTING) The ISO sensitivity in dicates how sensitive to light the film is. A g reater valu e means higher sensitivity . High sens itivity is suitable for shoo ting an obje ct in a d ark pl ace or movin g fast and suppresses blurri ng.

61 3 Changing Shading f or Shooting T e xt (DEN- SITY) When you are shoo ting text, you can change the DENSITY se ttings. Y ou can select from DEEP , NORMAL and LIGHT . T ext Densit y setting can be a d justed by using the ADJ. Button o r using the Shooting Menu.

63 3 Shooting Consecutiv el y with Dif ferent W hite Balance (WHITE B AL- ANCE BRA CKET) Three im ages are automa tically record ed - a reddi sh image , a bluish image, and an i mage of the cu rrent whit e balanc e. The firs t image i s reddi sh, th e second o ne is equal to the curr ent setti ng, and the third one is bluish.
64 3 Choosing Pictur e Qual- ity Mode/Image Size (PIC QU ALITY/SIZE) The siz e of a s tored still ima ge and mo vie files depends o n picture qua lity and size set - tings. About Picture Quality Mode When still imag es and movies ar e saved as image file s, the image data is saved in a compressed file.

67 3 Manual F ocus Shooting (FOCUS) When Au to-Focus do es not focus as desired , you can f ocus manually (Manua l Focus). Y ou can b e unite d also wit h the s ubj ect in th e macro dista nce. Y ou can also shoo t with a fixed shooting dis- tance . When using a fixed sh ooting dista nce, it can be set to eith er Snapsho t or Infinity ( ∝ ).
68 3 Shooting at a Fixed Distance T o shoot w ith the shootin g distance fixed, fol - low the steps below . 1. T urn the Mo de Dial to 5 5 5 5 (Shoot- ing M ode) or 3 3 3 3 (Movie Mode). Altern atively , turn the Mode Dial to 4 (Scene Mode), and se lect a sce ne to ha ve th e cam era read y .
69 3 Changing the Light Metering (PHO T OMETR Y) Y ou can change the meteri ng method (the range to use for mete ring) to determ ine the exposure value.
70 3 Changing the Edge Quality of Still Images (SHARPNESS) Y ou can change the defini tion of your still images to either sharp o r sof t. By default, your camera is set to Normal . T o make changes to the sharpness of still images , foll ow the st eps below .

72 3 Setting the Exposur e Time (TIME EXPOSURE) If you set the camera to TIME EXPOSURE, when you sh oot, the shutter stays open for the time specified. By setting an exposu re time , you c an ca ptur e the t rac k of m oving subject s such as fireworks and car light s, when you sh oot a night sce ne.
73 3 Shooting Pictur es Auto- ma ticall y at Set In ter- vals (INTER V AL) Y ou can set th e camera to automatically t ake pictures a t fixed intervals. Y ou can se t the shoo ting interv al at an y leng th fr om 30 sec- onds to 3 hour s, in incremen ts of 30 seconds.
74 3 • In steps 5 to 7, if you press and hold the (up/down/l eft/ri ght arrow) buttons, you can quickly rai se or lower the sett ing value. • If you use batter ies for power , you may exhaust the batt eries. Using the AC Adapter (s old separa tely) i s recom- mended.
75 3 Inserting th e Date into a S till Imag e (DA TE IMPRINT) Y ou can st amp the da te on the bottom right of your stil l images. Y ou can choo se to di splay the date in one of two format s, Date (Y/M/D) or Date a nd T i me (Y /M/D/H:M). • If the date and time have not been set, DA TE IMPRINT cannot be used.
76 3 R etur ning the Shooting Menu Settings to their Defaults (REST ORE DEF A UL TS) Y ou can restore the Sh ooting Menu de faults, return ing the set tings to what the y were at the time of purchase. T o restore the Shooti ng Menu to it s initial set- tings, fo llow the st eps below .
Section 4 Playing Back/Deleting S till Images, Movies, and Sounds Y o u can displ ay s till im ages or mov ies on the LCD Mo nito r to check t hem, and delete unwanted ones. Y ou can also hear a record ed sound from th e speaker . It is recommended that you plug in the AC Adapter when- ever viewing still images or movies on the LCD Monitor .
78 4 V iewing the Photo Y ou J ust T ook (Quick R e view) Right afte r shooting a still image, if you want to see it immediat ely , you can display th e shot in Shootin g Mode. This function is ca lled Quick Review . For mo vies, t he firs t frame appea rs as a st ill image.
79 4 Deleting the Displayed Still I mage or Movie The movie or still im age you d isplayed u sing the Q (Quick Re view) button can be deleted by pressing the D (DELE TE) bu tto n. T o delete a still imag e or movie tha t is dis- play ed, f ollow the s teps bel ow .
80 4 2. Move to the s till image you want to view using the #$ #$ #$ #$ bu ttons. If you press the $ button , you can vi ew the next stil l imag e or movie. If you press the # button, you can view the previ ous still image or movie. If you pres s and h old eith er the # or th e $ button, you can move quickly betwe en images .
81 4 Adjusting the Movie Sound Volume T o adjust the volu me, follow the steps below . 1. Press the #$ #$ #$ #$ buttons. The volu me adj ustment b ar appear s. 2. Press the !" !" !" !" buttons to adjust the volume. The volume can be set to nin e levels.

83 4 V iewing T humbnail I mages on the L CD Monitor The LCD Monitor scre en is split into six thumb nail im ages, allow ing you to view you r still images o r movies at one glan ce (Thumb- nail Displa y). T o vi ew the T hum bnail Displ ay and selec t the still image for viewing, follow the steps below .
84 4 Enlarg ed Viewing When you are displaying a still image, if you press the 8 (Enlarged V iew) button, you can display the still image up to 3.4 times larger . If you select a still image or movie you want to see from Thumbnail Display Mode, you can view it normally with just the one shot displayed.
85 4 Press the DISP . button to turn on or off the bar display at the lower part of the LCD mon- itor . For how to shoot images in S Multi-Shot or M Multi-Shot mode, see P .40. 86 4 V iewing on a T elevision Y ou can also view the still images and mov- ies you have t aken on a TV screen. The cam- era displa ys everythin g on the TV screen just as on it s LCD Moni tor . T o use your television for viewing, connect your camera to the tele visi on with the A V cable that came with your camera.
87 4 Deleting Unwanted Still Ima ges/Mo vies/Sounds Y ou can easily delete st ill images, mo vies, and soun ds that have not come out right. The f ollow ing ar e the th ree wa ys to delete photos : .

90 5 About the Dir ect Print Function The Dire ct Print stand ard enables direct printi ng fr om a c amera to a prin ter , by c on- necting them via a USB cable . Phot os can be printed quickly and easi ly from you r digital camera witho ut using a computer .

Section 6 About Other Functions The camera has fun ctions to protect still imag es and mov- ies from b eing inadverte ntly deleted, to copy those from the in ternal mem ory onto a memory card, an d to set st ill imag es for a Print Servi ce. These ma nagement fun ctions are exp l ained here.
