11 1 Ho w to Use the Mode Dial The Mode Dial is on the to p of the c amera. The Mode Dia l is used to select the desired mode a nd oper ation fo r shootin g and play- back (still ima ge viewi ng). 1. T urn the Mode Dial to the sym- bol of the mode you w ant to use.
12 1 Inser ting the Batteries If you ha ve already used this cam era, follow the step s below to make sure it is turned of f before removing or lo ading b atteri es. 1. Make sure t he LCD mon itor is tu rned off. 2. Make sure th e lens barr ier (built-i n lens prote cti on) is clos ed.
13 1 • Other batter ies, such as manganese dry cell (R6) and Ni-C d, cannot be used. • Please remove the batt eries if you are not going to use the camera for a lon g period of time. • The life of an AA alkaline bat tery (LR6) depends on t he brand and the st orage time from the date of producti on.
14 1 Using the R ec har ge- abl e B a tt er y The rech argeable batte ry (DB-4 3) is an other option for powe ring this camera . This battery is conven ient because i t can be used o ver and ov er aga in by re chargi ng, and t he ba t- tery powe r lasts lo ng.
15 1 • Please remove the rechargeabl e batteries if you are not going to use t he camera for a long period of time. • Use the battery char ger BJ-2 (sold sep a- rately) to rechar ge the bat tery . • S tore the removed battery in a dry cool place.
16 1 3. Open the power (DC input) cable cover and t ake the cable out. 4. Close the battery/card cover and slide it back into place. 5. Plug the power cord into an out- let. • Be sure to fi rmly att ach cables and plug in cords. • When you are not using the camera, unplug the AC Adapter from the camera and th e power outl et.
17 1 T ur ning the P ow er On/ Of f The camera is switched On a nd Of f as fol- lows. Turning the Camera On 1. Press the power button. After th e start s ound, the flash lamp an d auto-fo cus lamp b link alternate ly for sev- eral seconds.
18 1 Inser ting an SD Mem- or y Car d (Available in Stor es) Y ou can record the still im ages and movi es you have taken in the ca mera's internal memory o r on an SD me mory ca rd (avai lable in stores) .
19 1 2. Make sure the card is f acing the right way and then push the card all the way in until it clicks. 3. Close the battery/card cover and slide it back into place. When loading the SD Memory Car d, t ake care not to get any dirt on t he card's metal parts.

25 1 Synchro Monitor Mode In Synchr o Monitor m ode, the LCD monitor is ke pt of f (no display) e xcept durin g the followin g camera operat ions. Thi s mode i s ef fectiv e for saving p ower consum ption . Histo gram D isplay When histogram display is on, a histogram appears in the low er right corner on the LCD monitor screen.

27 1 The Basics of the Shooting Menu/ Playback Menu Operation T o displ ay the me nu: 1. T urn the M ode Dial to 5 5 5 5 (Shooting Mode), A/ M (Aperture Priority/Manual Exposure Mod e), 4 4 4 4 (SCENE Mode), or 6 6 6 6 (Playback Mode). 2. Press the M M M M button.

36 2 Ho w to Hold the Camer a If the camera moves when you press the shutter button , the still imag e might not come out clearly (d ue to camera shake). The mark displ ayed on the L CD monitor in dicates that cam era shake sho uld be avoided un der the curr ent shooting condition.
37 2 If the ca mera ca nnot au tomatically fo cus, the crossh airs in the center of th e LCD monit or turn re d and th e auto-f ocus la mp in the lower le ft of the viewfind er blinks in green. • When the grid appears, t he crosshairs do not appear in the mi ddle of the LCD moni- tor .
38 2 Shooting Still Images When taking still images, Shooting Mod e is usua lly used . Ther e are t wo met hods of usin g the sh utt er button, p ressing th e shutt er in two st ages (half-p ress) and p ressing it all t he way d own at once (fu ll-press).
39 2 Capturing the Moment Shoo ting (Full-press) 1. T urn the mode dial to 5 5 5 5 (Shoot- ing M ode) or A/M (Aperture Pr i- ority/Manual Exposure Mod e). 2. Compos e your shot either by looking thr ough the Viewfinder or at the LCD Monitor . 3. Put the subject of your photo right in the center and press the shutter button all the way .
40 2 W hen the Subject is not Center ed on Y our Com- position (F ocus Loc k) When th e subject of you r compo sitio n is not centered, you can compose your picture afte r setting the focus and then shoo t.
41 2 Shooting with Scener y- Ma tc hing If you use the Sce ne Mode, yo u can sel ect from amon g six types of sho oting mode s and shoot au tomatically with o ptimal settings fo r the scene . Y ou can select a mo de from the fol lowing six type s, in Sc ene Mod e.
42 2 • Y ou can set White Balance while in Scene Mode as well (see P .62), but it may not be possible to get the ef fect that matches a scene. • Manual focus cannot be used in Scene Mode. • In Scene Mode, those pi ctures dis played i n the background of the expl anation screen are just for ef fect .
43 2 Shooting with Multi-Shot If you switch to Multi- Shot, you can shoot conse cutive images. This is co nvenien t when you want to cap ture the moment. There are three wa ys to shoot Mu lti-Shot s, "CONT", "SCONT" and "M CONT".
44 2 • The maxi mum number of images that can be shot in Multi- Shot mode dep ends on th e image size and pictur e qual ity sett ings as fo llows : • While shootin g with Multi-Shot , the LCD Monitor display t urns off . Compose your picture and secur e it using a tripo d, or use the V iewfinder .
45 2 Shooting with Multi-Shot Operatio n contin ued from the previous p age: 7. Compos e your picture, then press and hold the shutter but- ton. As long as you hol d the sh utter bu tton down, pictures contin ue to b e taken. 8. As soon as you release the shut- ter button, shooting stop s.
46 2 Shooting with Optical Zoom If you use the z (T elep hoto) : T/ Z (Wi de- angle): W but tons, you ca n alter th e size of the subj ect in yo ur phot o witho ut havin g to change your d istan ce from the subject. (Equival ent to a 35 mm camera' s 28 to 85mm zoom.
47 2 Shooting with the Digital Zoom The Dig ital Zoom functio n enl arges imag es by process ing them. W hen you u se the d igita l zoom, press ing the z (T elep hoto) butto n enlarges the subject even more than the specifi ed enla rgeme nt rati o (optic al zoom) .
48 2 Shooting Close-ups (Macr o Photo) Using the N (Macro) bu tton al lows you to take a ti ght clos e-up (Macro Ph oto). This fe a- ture i s good fo r shoo ting flow ers, insect s and other sma ll subjec ts, because you can get a clos e-up of one ce ntimet er (1/2 inch) f rom the subj ect.

52 3 Using the Flash If you press the F (Fl ash) bu tton, you can switch into Flash Mode (Fl ash, Flash Of f, and other se ttings). Sw itch set tings acco rding to time, cond ition s and yo ur prefer ence, an d shoo t yo ur pic tures . From the fr ont edge o f the lens, flashlight reaches a bout 0.

O nce charging is complete, the lamp go es of f and it is possib le t o shoot. How to use the hot shoe Since th e camera h as a hot sh oe, you ca n conn ect an extern al fl ash (a vailab le in s tores) for u se.
54 3 Using the Self-Timer Y ou can set the Se lf-ti mer t o shoot af ter either tw o or te n secon ds. If the person w ho takes the ph oto wan ts to b e in the stil l imag e as well, it is conveni ent to use a sett ing of te n seconds; a setting of two second s is useful for pr eventing cam era sha ke.
55 3 Shooting in A per tur e Priority/Manual Expo- sur e Mode When the mode di al is set to Apertu re Pri ority Mode, you ca n set t he aper ture and sh utter spee d manually for shoo ting. In A/M Mod e, bo th Apertur e Priority Mode and Man ual Expo sure Mo de ar e avail able.
56 3 Using the shooting menu 1. T urn t he Mode Dial to A/M (Apert ure Priorit y/Manual Exposur e Mode). The curr ent f- number and shut ter sp eed (AUTO) appear in the bottom part on the screen. 2. Press the M M M M button. The Shoo ting me nu ap pears.
57 3 4. Release the ! ! ! ! button. 5. Half-press the shutter rel ease button. The LCD mo nitor di splays an exposu re leve l indi ca tor . The indicator range is from -2EV t o +2EV . If the e xposure level is out side this range, the ind icator turns or ange.
58 3 Shooting a Sti ll I mage with Sound (I MA GE WITH SOUND) Y ou can sho ot a still image with a voi ce memo. Af ter the still i mage is stored , voice recording st art s automatically a nd can con - tinue f or up to eight seconds. Thi s func tion is useful f or addin g comme nt s on the st atus or content s of subje ct.
59 3 Using the ADJ . (Adjust) Button The AD J button allows exposure corre ction, white b alancing, a nd ISO sensitivity settin g by fewe r operat ions.
60 3 Changing the Exposur e (EXPOSURE COMP .) The exposure set ting allows you t o select brightness levels for yo ur shot s. Normally , if yo ur sub ject is cen tered , back- light compen sation is au tomatically ac tivated, and you can shoo t with cor rect exposur e.

62 3 Using Na tural and Ar tifi- cial Lighting (WHITE BA L A N C E ) With a no rmal camera, a white su bject m ay not be r eprod uced as white de pendin g on lighti ng arou nd the su bject . Digital ca meras have a funct ion cal led Wh ite Balance, which a utomatically adjusts white balan ce so whit e subje cts are re produc ed as white.

65 3 Sensitivity Settings (ISO SETTING) The ISO sensitivity in dicates how sensitive to light the film is. A g reater valu e means hi gher sensitivity . High sensitivity is suitable for shoo ting an obje ct in a d ark plac e or moving fast and suppresses blurri ng.

67 3 Changing Shading f or Shooting T e xt (DEN- SITY) When you are shoo ting text, you can change the DENSITY se ttings. Y ou can select from DEEP , NORMA L and LIGHT . T ext Density setting ca n be adjusted by using the ADJ. Button o r using the Shooting Menu.

69 3 Shooting Consecutiv el y with Dif f er ent W hite Balance (WHITE B AL- ANCE BRA CKET) Three im ages are automa tically r ecorded - a reddi sh image , a bluish image, and an i mage of the current wh ite balance. The firs t image i s reddi sh, the se cond o ne is equal to th e curr ent setti ng, and the third on e is bluish.
70 3 Choosing Pictur e Qual- ity Mode/Image Size (PIC QU ALITY/SIZ E) The siz e of a s tored still ima ge and mo vie files depends o n picture qua lity and size set - tings. About Picture Quality Mode When still imag es and movies ar e saved as image file s, the image data is saved in a compressed file.
71 3 3. Selec t [PIC QUALIT Y/SIZE ] and then press the O O O O or $ $ $ $ button. 4. Press the !" !" !" !" buttons to select a picture quality/size. 5. Press the O O O O or # # # # button. Pict ure Qua lity/ Image S ize setting s ar e completed.

73 3 Manual F ocus Shooting (FOCUS) When Au to-Focus do es not focus as d esired, you can f ocus manually (Manua l Focus). Y ou can b e unite d also with the su bject in the macro dista nce. Y ou can also shoot with a fixed shooting dis- tance . When usin g a fixed sh ooting d ista nce, it can be set to eith er Snap shot or Infinity ( ∝ ).
74 3 • T o change the s hutter spe ed for shoot ing with manual focusing , turn th e mode dial to Aperture Pr iority /Manual Exposur e Mode (A/M), selec t [Manual exposure] from the Shooting menu, and set the shut ter speed. The up/down dial cannot be used for focus adjustment.
75 3 Changing the Light Metering (PHO T OMETR Y) Y ou can change the metering me thod (th e range to use for meter ing) to determ ine the exposure value.
76 3 Changing the Edge Quality of Still Images (SHARPNESS) Y ou can change the de finition of you r still images to either sharp o r sof t. By default, your camera is set to Normal . T o make changes to the sharpn ess of still images , foll ow the steps belo w .
77 3 Shooting Consecutiv el y with Dif f er ent Expo- sur es (A UT O BRA CKET) The Auto Bracket ing function autom atically shoo ts three con secu tive s hots, wit h th e specif ied ex posu re value as standard , at three e xposure le vels, at -0. 5EV , ± 0, and +0.
78 3 Setting the Shutter Speed (TIME EXPOSURE) If you se t the shu tter spe ed, when yo u shoo t, the shutt er sta ys open fo r the spe cified time. By set tin g the s hutt er sp eed, yo u can capt ure the track of moving subjec ts such as fire- works and car ligh ts, wh en you sho ot a night scene.
79 3 Shooting Pictur es Auto- ma tically at Set Int er- vals (INTER V AL) Y ou can set th e camera to a utomatically t ake pictures at fixe d intervals. Y ou can set the shoo ting int erva l at an y leng th from 30 sec - onds to 3 hour s, in incremen ts of 30 seconds.
80 3 • In steps 5 to 7, if you press and hold the !" " " " buttons, y ou can quic kly raise or lower the sett ing val ue. • If you use batter ies for power , you may exhaust the batt eries. Using the AC Adapter (s old sep arately) is recom- mended.
81 3 Inser ting the Date into a Stil l Image (D A TE IMPRINT) Y ou can st amp the date on the bo ttom righ t of your stil l images. Y ou can choose to displ ay the date in one of two format s, Date (Y/M/D) or Date a nd T ime (Y/M/D/H:M ). • If the date and time have not been set, DA TE I MPRINT cannot be used.
82 3 R etur ning the Shooting Menu Settings to their Defaults (REST ORE DEF A UL TS) Y ou can restore the Shoo ting Menu de fault s, return ing the set tings to what the y were at the time of purcha se. T o restore the Sh ooting M enu to it s init ial set- tings, fo llow the st ep s below .
Section 4 Playing Back/Deleting S till Images, Movies, and Sounds Y ou can dis play still im ages or mov ies on the LCD Mo nitor to check t hem, and delete unwan ted ones. Y ou can a lso hear a recor ded so und fro m the speake r . It is recommended that you plug in the AC Adapter when- ever viewing still images or movies on the LCD Monitor .
84 4 V iewing the Photo Y ou J ust T ook (Quic k R eview) Right afte r shoo ting a still imag e, if you wan t to see it immediat ely , you can disp lay the shot in Shootin g Mode. This function is ca lled Quick Review . For mo vies, t he firs t frame ap pea rs as a still image.
85 4 Deleting the Displayed Still I mage or Movie The movie or still im age you d isplayed using the Q (Quick Re view) b utton can be del eted by pressing the D (DELE TE) bu tto n. T o delete a still ima ge or movie tha t is dis- playe d, f ollow the s teps bel ow .

88 4 Playing Back Sound Y ou can play back sound re corded in V oi ce Memo Mode or recorded with a still im age. Playing Back So und T o play back sound re corded in V oic e Memo Mode, follow the steps below . 1. T urn the Mode Dia l to 6 6 6 6 (Play- back Mode).
89 4 Adjusting the Volum e T o adjust the volu me, follow the steps below . 1. Press the !" !" !" !" buttons. The volu me adj ustment bar appear s. 2. Press the !" !" !" !" buttons to adjust the volume. The volume can be set to nin e levels.

91 4 Enlarg ed Viewing When yo u are di splayi ng a stil l imag e, if you press th e 8 (E nlarg ed Vi ew) bu tton, you can displa y the stil l imag e up to 3 .4 time s large r . T o view still im ages in Enla rged Displ ay Mode, follow the steps below .
92 4 Vi ewing an S Multi-Shot or M Multi-Shot S till Ima ge in Enlar ged Display Mode When S Multi-Shot o r M Multi-Shot still images (16 imag es in a f ile) are d isplay ed, one (sho t) of the 16 i mages can be disp layed in Enlar ged Displa y Mode. After enlarged dis- play , th e disp lay ca n be fed one sh ot at a time.
