Safety Precautions 11 Battery, Battery Charger Other Warnings • Use only recommended batteries. • Do not place the battery near or in direct flame. • Do not let the battery come into contact with water (e.g. sea water) or other liquids. • Do not attempt to disassemble, alter or apply heat to the battery.
Safety Precautions 12 • Playing back for a long time may cause feelings of discomfort. Caution • Do not aim the camera at bright light sources (the sun, etc.). Doing so may cause malfunctions or damage the image sensor. • When using the camera on a beach or at a windy location, be careful not to allow dust or sand to enter the camera.
13 Getting Started This chapter explains preparations before shooting, how to shoot in A mode, and then how to view, erase and print the images you take. The latter part of this chapter explains how to shoot and vie w movies and transfer images to a computer.
14 Use the incl uded charger to ch arge the batt ery. Remove the cover. Insert the battery. ● Align the S marks on the battery and charger, t hen inse rt the bat tery by sl iding it in and down . Charge the battery. ● For CB-2LX: Flip out the plug and plug the charger i nto a power out let .
Charging the Battery 15 Approximate Number of Shots That Can Be Taken • The number of shots that can be taken is based on the Camera & Ima ging Products Association (CIPA) measurement standard. • Under some shooting conditions, fewer shots can be taken.
16 Insert the i ncluded ba ttery and a memory card into the ca mera. Check the card’s write-protect tab. ● If the memory card has a write-protect tab, you will not be able to re cord image s if the tab is in the loc ked positio n. Slide the t ab up until you h ear a click.

Inserting the Battery and Memory Card 18 Approximate Number of Shots per Memory Card • Values are based on the default settings. • The number of shots that can be taken will vary depending on camera s ettings, the subject and the memory card used.
19 The Date/Time sett ings screen will appear th e first time th e camera is tu rned on. Since th e dates and times re corded into yo ur images are ba sed on these settings, b e sure to s et them. Turn on the camera. ● Press the power button. X The Date/Time screen will appe ar.
Setting the Date and Time 20 Changing the Date and Time You can chan ge the curren t date and time s ettings. Display the menus. ● Press the n but ton. Select [Date/Time] in the 3 tab. ● Press the qr buttons to selec t the 3 tab. ● Press the op butt ons or turn the  dial to select [Da te/Time], then pr ess the m button.
21 You can change the language d isplayed in t he LCD monitor menus and messages. Set the playback mode. ● Press the 1 butt on. Display the setting s screen. ● Press and hold the m button , then immediately pr ess the n button . Set the disp lay languag e.
22 Before you us e a new memory card or one that has be en used in other devices, yo u should for mat the car d with this c amera. Form atting (initia lizing) a memory car d erases all d ata on the memory card. As you ca nnot retriev e the erased da ta, exercis e adequate cau tion before formatting the memory card.
23 The shutter button has tw o stops. To ta ke images th at are in focus, be sure to first pr ess the shu tter button lightly (hal fway) to fo cus, then tak e the shot. Press halfway (lightly to the first stop). X The camera focu ses and automat ically selects the ne cessary se ttings for shooting, such as the brig htness.
24 Since the came ra can determi ne the subject a nd shooting co nditions, you can let it a utomatically select th e best setti ngs for t he scene a nd just sho ot. The camera c an also detect and focus on fa ces, setting t he color and brightness to optimal le vels.
A Taking Pictures 25 Focus. ● Press the s hutter butto n halfway to focus. X When the came ra focuses, it will beep twice and the indicator wi ll light gree n (orange when t he flash will fire). X Green AF frames appear where the subject is i n focus.
A Taking Pictures 26 • The lamp lights when the shutter button is pressed halfway? To reduce red-eye and to assist in focusing, the lamp may light when shooting in dark are as. • The h icon blinks when you try to take an image? The flash is charging .
27 You can view you r images on t he screen. Select the playb ack mode. ● Press the 1 butt on. X The last imag e you took will appear. Select an image. ● Pressing the q button will cycle through the images in reverse o rder. ● Pressing t he r button will cycle thr ough the images in the order th ey were taken.
28 You can selec t and erase imag es one at a time. Please note that erased images can not be recover ed. Exercise ad equate cauti on before era sing an image. Select the playback mode. ● Press the 1 butt on. X The last imag e you took will appear. Select an image to erase.

2 Printing Images 30 Print images. ● Press the c button. X Printing will start and t he c button w ill blink blue. ● If you want to print additio nal images, repeat Steps 5 and 6 after pr inting has completed. ● After prin ting has comple ted, turn o ff the camera and pri nter, and unplu g the interface ca ble.
31 The camera can a utomatical ly select all se ttings so th at you can shoot movies just by pressing the shutter b utton. If you continue shooting for a long time, the camera may become warm. Th is is not a mal function. Set the mode dial to E . Select the E mode.
E Shooting Movies 32 Shoot. ● Press the shut ter button fully. X The camera will st art shooting t he movie, and [ Rec] and the elapsed t ime will appear on the s creen.
33 You can view you r movies on the scr een. Select the playb ack mode. ● Press the 1 butt on. X The last imag e you shot will appear. X appears on movi es. Select a movie. ● Press the qr buttons or turn the  dial to select a mo vie, then press the o button.

Zooming in More Closely on Subjects (Digital Zoom) 64 Digital Tele-Converter The focal le ngth of the lens can be incr eased by an eq uivalent of 1.5x or 2.0x. This enables a faster sh utter spe ed and les s chance o f camera sha ke than the zoom (inc luding digital zoom) used by itse lf at the same zoom factor.

98 Just like wit h exposure compe nsation (p. 76) , you can adjust the exposu re ±2 stops in 1/3-stop incremen ts when us ing the flas h. Select the flash exposure compensation. ● Press the m butt on and select , then press the m bu tton again. Make the setting.
99 The camera automatic ally change s the sh utter speed or apert ure value when the fla sh fires to avo id overexpos ing and blowi ng out the high lights in the scene. Select [Fla sh Settings]. ● Press the n butt on, select [F lash Settings] fro m the 4 tab and press t he m button.
100 You can cha nge the lo ok of an ima ge when shoo ting. Howev er, the sh ooting conditio ns may cause the i mage to become coars e, or the colo rs may not come out as expected. T Color Accent You can selec t to retain a single colo r and chang e the rest to bl ack and white in a compos ition.
Changing the Color and Shooting 101 Select Y . ● Follow Ste p 1 on p. 59 to select Y . Press the l button. ● The unchanged image and the Col or Swap image will both displa y. ● The default setting is to ch ange green to gray. Specify the color to be swap ped.
