10 • Before using the product, please ensure that you read the safety precautions described below. Always ensure that the product is used correctly. • The safety precautions noted on the following pages are intended to prevent injuries to yourself and other persons, or damage to the equipment.
Safety Precautions 11 • Turn the camera off in places where camera use is prohibited. The electromagnetic waves emitted by the camera may interfere with the o peration of electronic instruments and other devices.
Safety Precautions 12 • In regular use, small amounts of smoke may be emitted from the flash. This is due to the h igh intensity of the flash burn ing dust and foreign materials st uck to the front of the unit. Please use a cot ton swab to remove dirt, dust or other foreign matter from the flash to prevent heat build-up and damage to the unit.
13 Prepare for shooting as fol lows. Attach the strap. z Attach the included strap to th e camera as shown. z On the other side of the camera, att ach the strap the s ame way. Attach the lens cap to the strap. z Remove the lens cap f rom the len s and attach the lens cap c ord to the s trap.
Initial Preparations 14 Before use , charge th e battery wit h the inclu ded charge r. Be sure to charge the battery initially, b ecause the camera is not sold with the battery ch arged. Remove the cover. Insert the battery. z After aligning the o marks on the b attery and charger, ins ert the battery by push ing it in ( ) and down ( ).
Initial Preparations 15 Insert the i ncluded ba ttery and a memory card (sold sepa rately). Note that befor e using a new memory card (or a memory card fo rmatted in another devi ce), you should format the memory card with this camera (p. 171). Check the card’s write-protect tab.

Always confi rm that the batt ery is facing t he right way and locks wh en inserted . Insert the memory card. z Ins ert the memory card f acing as shown unti l it clicks int o the locked p osition.

Initial Preparations 18 A screen for se tting the dat e and time is di splayed the f irst time you tur n the camera on. Be su re to specify t he date and time , which is the ba sis for dates and times ad ded to you r images. Turn the camera on. z Press the power bu tton.

The camer a beeps twice af ter focusing, a nd AF frame s are disp layed to indicate im age areas in focu s. z If [Raise the flash ] appears on t he screen, move the switch to raise the fla sh.

38 To conserve battery pow er when sho oting, you can use the opt ical viewfin der instead of the screen. Shoot the same way as whe n using the scr een. Deactivate the screen. z Pres s the p button to t urn the screen off (p. 39). Adjust the di opter.

Shooting in Smart Auto Mode 47 • A blinking h icon displayed when you at tempt to shoot in dicates that shooting is not possible until the fl ash has finishe d rechargin g. Shooting can resume as soon as t he flash is read y, so either p ress the shutt er button al l the way d own and wait , or release it and pr ess it again.
