Always en sure that the cam era is operated correc tly. • The safety precautions noted on the following pages are intende d to prevent injuries to yourself and other persons, or damage to the equipme nt.
Safety Precautions 9 Battery, Battery Charger Other Warnings • Use only recommended batteries. • Do not place the battery near or in direct flame. • Do not let the battery come into contact with water (e.g. sea water) or other liquids. • Do not attempt to disassemble, alter or apply heat to the battery.
Safety Precautions 10 • Do not allow dirt or metal objects (such as pins o r keys) to contact the charg er terminals or plug. This could resul t in electric al shock, fire or other damage. Caution • Do not aim the camera at bright light sources (the sun, etc.
11 Getting Started This chapter explains preparations before shooting, how to shoot in A mode, and then how to view, erase and print the images you take. The latter part of this chapter explains how to shoot and vie w movies and transfer images to a computer.
12 Use the incl uded charger to char ge the batter y. Remove the cover. Insert the battery. ● Align the S marks on the battery and charger, t hen inse rt the bat tery by sl iding it in and down . Charge the battery. ● For CB-2LY: Fl ip out the plug an d plug the charger i nto a power out let .
Charging the Battery 13 Approximate Number of Shots That Can Be Taken * The number of shots that can be taken is based on the Camera & Imaging Products Association (CIPA) measurement standard. • Under some shooting conditions, fewer shots can be taken.
14 Insert the i ncluded ba ttery and a memory card into the ca mera. Check the card’s write-protect tab. ● If the memory card has a write-protect tab, you will not be able to re cord image s if the tab is in the loc ked positio n. Slide the t ab up until you h ear a click.

Inserting the Battery and Memory Card 16 Approximate Number of Shots per Memory Card • Values are based on the default settings. • The number of shots that can be taken will vary depending on camera s ettings, the subject and the memory card used.
17 The Date/Time sett ings screen will appear th e first time th e camera is tu rned on. Since th e dates and times re corded into yo ur images are ba sed on these settings, b e sure to s et them. Turn on the camera. ● Press the ON/OF F button. X The Date/Time screen will appe ar.
Setting the Date and Time 18 Changing the Date and Time You can chan ge the curren t date and time s ettings. Display the menus. ● Press the n but ton. Select [Date/Time] in the 3 tab. ● Press the qr buttons to selec t the 3 tab. ● Press the op buttons to select [Dat e/ Time], then press the m button.
19 You can change the language d isplayed in t he LCD monitor menus and messages. Set the playback mode. ● Press the 1 butt on. 20 Before you us e a new memory card or one that has be en used in other devices, yo u should for mat the car d with this c amera. Form atting (initia lizing) a memory car d erases all d ata on the memory card. As you ca nnot retriev e the erased da ta, exercis e adequate cau tion before formatting the memory card.
21 The shutter button has tw o stops. To ta ke images th at are in focus, be sure to first pr ess the shu tter button lightly (hal fway) to fo cus, then tak e the shot. Press halfway (lightly to the first stop) . X The camera focu ses and automat ically selects the ne cessary se ttings for shooting, such as the brig htness.
22 Since the came ra can determi ne the subject a nd shooting co nditions, you can let it a utomatically select th e best setti ngs for t he scene a nd just sho ot. The camera c an also detect and focus on fa ces, setting t he color and brightness to optimal le vels.
A Taking Pictures 23 Focus. ● Press the s hutter butto n halfway to focus. X When the came ra focuses, it will beep twice and the indicator wi ll light gree n (orange when t he flash will fire). X Green AF frames appear where the subject is i n focus.
A Taking Pictures 24 • The image comes out dark even if the flash fired when shooting? The subj ect is too fa r away fo r the flas h to reach. Shoot within t he effective fl ash range of approximate ly 30 cm – 4.2 m (12 in. – 14 ft.) at maximum wide angle, and approximately 30 cm – 2.
25 You can view you r images on t he screen. Select the playb ack mode. ● Press the 1 butt on. X The last imag e you took will appear. Select an image. ● Pressing t he q button wi ll cycle thr ough the images in r everse orde r. ● Pressing t he r button will cycle thr ough the images in the order th ey were taken.
26 You can selec t and erase imag es one at a time. Please note that erased images can not be recover ed. Exercise ad equate cauti on before era sing an image. Select the playback mode. ● Press the 1 butt on. X The last imag e you took will appear. Select an image to erase.

29 The camera can a utomatical ly select all se ttings so th at you can shoot movies just by pressing the sh utter butt on. Select the E mode. ● Set the mode switch to E . Compose the sho t. ● Moving the zoom lev er toward i will zoom in on your sub ject, making it appear larger.
E Shooting Movies 30 Shoot. ● Press the shut ter button fully. X The camera will st art shooting the movie, and [ Rec] and the elapsed t ime will appear on the s creen.
31 You can view you r movies on the scr een. Select the playb ack mode. ● Press the 1 butt on. X The last imag e you shot will appear. X appears on movies. Select a movie. ● Press the qr buttons to selec t a movie, then press th e m button. X The movie co ntrol panel will appear on the screen.

Zooming in More Closely on Subjects (Digital Zoom) 57 Digital Tele-Converter The focal le ngth of the lens can be incr eased by an eq uivalent of 1. 4x or 2.3x. This enables a faster sh utter spe ed and les s chance of camera s hake than the zoo m (including digital zoom) used by itsel f at the same zoo m factor.
58 You can inser t the shooti ng date and time in the lower righ t corner of an image. Once inserted, however, t hey cannot be delet ed. Be sure to chec k beforehand that the d ate and t ime are co rrectly set (p. 17) . Select [Date Stamp]. ● Press the n but ton.
