22 2 Preparations Pr eparing the Power Supply Y ou can power the camcorder using a battery pack or dir ectly using the compact power a dapter . If you connect the compact power adapter to the camcor der while a battery pack is attached, th e camcorder will draw power from the power outlet.

Date, Time and Language Settings 26 Date, Time and Language Settings Setting the Date and Time Y ou will need to set the date and time of the camcor der befor e you can start using i t. When the camcor der’ s clock is not set, the [Date/Time] scr een will appear automaticall y with the month selected.

Using the Menus 28 Using the Menus In mode, many of the cam corder ’ s functions can be adjusted fr om the menu for general settings, which opens after pressing the MENU button. In mode, pr ess the MENU button to open the menu for general settings or SET to open the cl ip me nu for clip operations.
29 Using the Menus NOTES • Unavailable items may appe ar grayed out. • Pressing the MENU button at any time closes the menu. • When using the wireless contr oller , use the h , i , f , g and SET but tons in the same way as the camcord er’ s joystick.

31 Preparing the Camcorde r Using the LCD Panel Open the LCD panel 90 degr ees. • Y ou can r otate the panel 90 degr ees downwar d or 180 deg rees towar d the lens. NOTES • By default, the viewfinder scr een is turned off while you use the LCD screen.
Preparing th e Camcorde r 32 Setting the Scr een to Black & White The viewfinder and LCD screen display in co lor by de faul t but you can set them to black & white. Even when the scr een is black & white, onscreen text and icons will still be displayed in color .

Preparing th e Camcorde r 34 Using the Wireless Controll er to Operate the Camcorder When using the wir eless cont roller , point it at the camcorde r’ s remote sensor . When the wir eless controller's buttons are operated, the camcor der's tally lamps w ill illuminate.
35 Preparing Re cording Media Pr eparing Record ing Media The camcor der recor ds clips to CompactFlash (CF) car ds and photos* to SD and SDHC memory cards. The cam corder is equipped with two CF car d slots. Initialize r ecordin g media ( 0 37) when you us e them with this camcorder for the first time.

40 3 Recording Reco r di ng Vi deo This section explains the rec ording basics. Befor e you begi n reco rding, m ake a test recor ding first to check if the camcor der operates corr ectly . Record f or approx imat ely 6 m inut es at 50 Mbps ( 0 46 ). Should the camcor der fail to operate correc tly , refer to Tr o u b l e s h o o t i n g ( 0 160).
41 Recording V ideo 2 Press the ST ART/STOP button to begin recor ding. • Recor ding starts. The f ront an d r ear tall y lamps illuminate and the reco rding indicator [ N REC] appears on th e scr een. • Y ou can us e the S T AR T/ST OP but ton on t he sid e gri p or ha ndle.
Recordin g Video 42 Recording in Full Au to Mode Move the CAMERA switch to FU LL AU TO to change the camco rder to full auto mode. In full auto m ode, the camcor der automatically sets the iris, gain, sh utter speed, and white balance. The camcord er will continuously adjust the brightness an d white balance automatically*.
43 Recording V ideo Onsc reen Displa ys Refer to this section for an explanat ion of the vari ous screen display s that appear in mode. Y ou can use the custom display function ( 0 109) to displ ay or hide most of the scr e en displays. Such screen displ ays are denoted with an asterisk (*).

Video Configuration: Bit Rate, Resoluti on and Frame Rate 46 Video Configuration: Bit Rate, Resolution and Frame Rate Before you r ecor d, select the bit rate, r esolution (frame size) a nd frame rate that best match your cr eative needs. 1 Open the [Bit Rate/Resolution] submenu to set the bit rate and res ol uti on .
47 Custom Button and Dial Custom Button and Dial Y ou can assign to the CUSTOM button and dial o ne of several fr equently used functions. Y ou can then adjust the selected function using the CUSTOM button and dial, without having to access the menu.
Adjusting the Focus 48 Adjusting the Focus This camcor der features the follo wing two meth ods for adjusting th e focus. Manual focus (MF): Use the manual ring to adjust th e focus. Y ou can use the peaki ng and magnification functions to hel p you focus more ac curately .
49 Adjusting the Focus NOTES • Using the subject dista nce display on th e scr een: - When the camcorder switches out of autofocus mode o r when you adjust the focus with the manual ring, the appro ximate subject distance is displayed on the scre en for approximately 3 seconds.

51 Adjusting the Focus Options NOTES • When recording in bright surroundings, the cam corder closes down the apertur e. This may cause the picture to appear blurr ed and is mo r e noticeable towar d the wide -angle end of the zoom rang e. In such c ase, set the [ l Camera Setup] [ND Filter] setting ( 0 143) to [Automatic].
Adjusting the Focus 52 Options NOTES • The camcorder may mistakenly detect the faces of non- human subjects. In such ca se, turn face detection off. • In certain cases, faces may not be detect ed correc tly . T ypical examples include: - Faces extrem ely small, large, dar k or bright in r elation to the overall picture.
53 Image Stabilizer Image Stabilizer Use the image stabilizer to compensate fo r camcorder shake in or der to achieve steadier shots. Ther e are 3 me thods of ima ge stabilization; select the method that best suits your needs.
Gain 54 Gain The gain con trol adjusts t he level of th e video signal gener ated depending on the lighting a nd shooting conditions. Y ou can select automatic or manual gain contr ol. Automa tic Gain Contr ol ( AGC) The camcor der automatically adjusts th e gain based on th e subject’ s brightness.
55 Gain Manual Gain Control Y ou can manually adjust the gai n of the 3 pr eset gain level s (L: low , M: middle, H: high). Each l evel can be set independently . Y ou can also fine-tun e the gain in 0.5 dB incr ements. Assign ing Ga in V alues Y ou can assign sepa rate gain values to the L, M and H preset levels.
Shutter Sp eed 56 Shutter Speed Set the shutter speed based on the reco rding conditions . For example, yo u may want to set slow er shutter speeds in darker envir onments. The cam cor der offers the follow ing 6 modes. Off: The c amcorde r uses a standard s hutter speed based on the frame rate.
57 Shutter Speed Changing the Shutter Speed Mode 1 Open the [Shutter] submenu. [ l Came ra Setup ] [Shutte r] 2 Select the desired mode and th en press SET . 3 Close the menu and then press the SHUTTER button. • If you selected [Automatic], the shutter speed mode is set to automatic and you do not need to perform the r est of the pr ocedure.
Shutter Sp eed 58 NOTES • When recording under a rtificial light sour ces such as fluorescent, mer cury or haloge n lamps, the screen may flicker depending on the shutter speed.
59 Adjusting the Aperture Adjusting the Apertur e Y ou can affect the brightness of your r ecordings or change the depth of field by adjusting the aperture. Incr ease the aperture v alue (F8) so that object s that ar e close and far away will be in focus.
Adjusting the Aperture 60 • When you set the aperture value manually , it is not retained if yo u activate automatic apertur e control (excluding full auto m ode). The apertur e value set automatical ly by the camcor der will be retained wh en you switch back to manual aperture control.
61 White Balance White Balance The camcor der uses an electronic whit e balance pro cess to calibrate the picture for accurate color display under differ ent lighting conditions. T here ar e 4 methods of setting the white balance. Auto white balance: The cam corder automatically adjusts the white balance to the optimal le vel.
White Balance 62 3 Close the menu and then pr ess the WB button. • Press the button repeatedl y until the icon of the desi re d setting appears in the lower left of the screen. Options Fine-tunin g the Preset White Bala nce Y ou can fine-tune the [Daylig ht] and [T ungsten] setti ngs within a range of -9 to 9.
63 White Balance Custom White Balance Y ou can stor e two custom white balance settings in the camcor der for future use. 1 Press the WB button to select the F A or F B custom se tting. •T h e F A or F B appears next to the color tem perature on the screen.
Zooming 64 Zooming Y ou can operate the zoom (up to 10x) using the zoom rocker on t he side grip or the one on the handle. Y ou can also use the manual ri ng or the zoom buttons on the wi reless c ontroller . For zooms with a gradual start and/or stop, use soft zoom contr ol ( 0 67).
65 Zooming Using the Grip Zoo m Rocker Use the functions in the [ l Camera Setup] [Zoom] submenus to set the zoom speed. W hen you select a constant zoom speed, set o ne of 16 constant speeds (1 is the slowest, 16 the f astest). With a variable zoom speed, pre ss gently for a slow zoom ; press har der for faster zoo ms.

Move the zoom rocker to ward Q to zoom out (wide-angle) and toward P to zoom in (telephoto ). Setting the Zoom Speed Refer to the followi ng table for appr oximate zoom speeds of the entir e zoom range (end to end).

Attaching the optional WD-H58W Wide-converter decr eases the focal le ngth by a factor of approximate ly 0.
69 Onscreen Ma rkers and Ze bra Pa tterns Onscr een M arkers and Ze bra Pat terns Using onscreen mar kers allows you to make sur e your su bj ect is correctly framed an d is wi thin the approp riate safe area. The zebra patterns help you identify ar eas that are over exposed.
Onscreen Ma rkers and Ze bra Pa tterns 70 Options NOTES • If you set an assignable button to [Markers] ( 0 98), you can pr ess the button to activate or deactiv ate the onscreen ma rkers. Displaying Zeb ra Patterns This camcor der has a zebra pattern feature that shows black and white diagonal stripes over areas that ar e over exposed.
71 Setting the Time Code Setting the Time Code The camcor der can genera te a time code signal and e mbe d it in your r ecor dings. Y ou can have the camcorder output the time code signal from the HD/SD SDI terminal ( b only) or GENLOC K/TC term inal ( b only; 0 76).
Setting the Time Code 72 4 Change the rest of the f ields (minutes, seconds, frame) in the same way . • Press the CANCEL button to close the screen without setting the time code. 5 Select [Set] to close the scr een. • If the running mode is set to [Free Run], the time code will start running from the value set i n steps 2 to 4.
73 Setting the Time Code NOTES • When the [ J O ther Functions] [Frame Rate] setti ng is set to [24P], the frames value in the time code ru ns fr om 0 to 23.
Setting the Us er Bit 74 Setting the User Bit The user bit display can be selected fr om the date or the time of recor ding, or an identificatio n code consisting of 8 character s in the hexadecimal system. T here ar e sixteen possible chara cters: the numbers 0 to 9 and the letters A to F .
75 b Synchronizing with an External Device b Synchr onizing with an External Device Using genlock synchronization, you can synchronize this cam cor der's video sig nal to that of an external video device. Similarly , using an external time code signal, you can synchr onize this camcor der's time code to the external signal.

Recording Audio 78 Rec or ding A udi o The camcor der features tw o-channel linear PCM audio r e cor ding and playback wi th a sampling f requency of 48 kHz. Y ou can recor d audio using the built-in microphone, o ptional external microphone (XLR or MIC terminal ) or line input (XLR terminal).
79 Record ing Audio Activati ng the Micr ophone Att enuator If the audio level is too high an d the sound sounds distorted when recor ding with the built-in micr ophone or a microphone connected to the MIC terminal, activate the microphone attenuator (12 dB for the built-in micr ophone, 20 dB for an external micr ophone).

83 Using Metadata Using Metadata The camcor der automatically adds metadata to clips while they are being r ecorde d. Metadata consists of the user -defined user memo* and recor ding data, such as shutter speed, expo sure and focus settings. Y ou can use the Canon XF Utility softwar e to check and sear ch for specific metadata.

85 Video Scope s Video Scop es The camcor der can display a simplified wa veform monitor . It can also display an edg e monitor* to he lp you focus. The video scopes appear only on the LCD scr een. They do not appear in the vi ew finder or on an external monitor .
Video Scopes 86 Config uring th e Edge M onito r Using this video scope allows you to fo cus wi th m or e pr ecision when the camcorder is in manual focus mode. 87 Adding Sh ot Marks while R ecording Adding Shot Marks while Recor ding When recor ding, you c an flag an important shot in a clip by adding a “shot mark” ( n ). There are two types of shot marks, shot mark 1 ( c ) and shot mark 2 ( d ), and you can add either or both types to a single clip.

89 Special Re cording Mod es Special Recording Modes The camcor der featur es 4 special r ecordi ng modes. Interval r ecording ([Interv al Rec]): The camco rder will auto m atically r ecord a pre-defined num ber of frames at a pre-def ined interval.
