8 The Camera • This camera is a precision instrument. Do not drop it or expose it to ph ysical shoc k. • The camera is not water proof and should not be used in w et conditions or underw ater . If the camera gets wet, take it to your nearest Canon dealer as soon as possib le .
9 • Do not press hard on an LCD displa y or subject it to impacts, as this can cause displa y flaws and damage. • If an LCD displa y becomes soiled, clean it with a commercially av ailable b lower brush, or wipe it with a soft cloth, taking care not to scratch the screen.

17 1 Bef ore Y ou Star t This chapter e xplains a f e w preliminar y steps and basic camera oper ations. Attaching the Strap P ass the end of the strap through the camera’ s strap mount from the bottom. Then pass it through the strap’ s b uc kle as shown in the illustration.

19 • Do not recharge any battery pack other than Battery P ac k BP-511 or BP-512. • If the batter y is left in the camer a f or a prolonged per iod without the camera being used, a lo w electr ical current ma y be discharged e xcessively and the battery’ s ser vice lif e may be aff ected.
20 Load a fully charged BP-511 batter y pac k into the camera. Batter y P ac k BP-512 can also be used. The le v el of charge remaining is sho wn in three stages when the P ow er s witch is set to < 1 >. (p .26) w : Charge is sufficient. e : Charge is low .
21 • The number of shots ma y be less than indicated in some cases , due to diff erences in shooting conditions. • The number of shots is reduced b y frequent use of the LCD monitor . • Holding the shutter b utton halfw a y down f or long per iods to use the AF function without taking a shot can reduce the n umber of shots.
22 Using a Household P o wer Supply With A C Adapter Kit A CK-E2 (optional), you can connect the camer a to a household pow er outlet and not worr y about the batter y becoming e xhausted. Place the cor d in the groo ve . • Carefully inser t the cord into the groo ve without damaging it.
23 Remo ve the caps. • Remov e the rear lens cap and the body cap b y tur ning them as shown b y the arrow . 1 Attach the lens. • Align the EF-S lens with the camera’ s white EF-S lens mount inde x and tur n the lens as sho wn by the arro w until it clic ks in place.
24 The captured image will be recorded onto the CF card (optional). Either a T ype I or T ype II CF card can be inser ted into the camera. Number of remaining shots The number of remaining shots depends on the remaining capacity of the CF card and the ISO speed setting.
25 • A blinking access lamp indicates that data is being read, written, or erased on the CF car d or that data is being transf erred. T o prevent damage to the image data, CF car d, or camera, never do the f ollowing while the access lamp is b linking: • Shake or hit the camera.
26 The camera oper ates only after the P ow er s witch is set to < 1 >. < 1 >: Set to this position when the camera is in use . < 2 >: The camera does not operate . Set to this position when not using the camera. • To sa v e batter y power , the camera tur ns off automatically after 1 min ute of non-operation.
27 The < l > dial is f or setting shooting settings and selecting and setting menu items . (1) Press a button and turn the < l > dial. When y ou press a button, its function remains activ e while a timer ( ∫ ) r uns . During this time you can tur n the < l > dial and vie w the settings on the LCD panel.
28 The on-screen menus enab le you to set v arious settings such as the image-recording quality , date and time, etc. Basically , y ou look at the LCD monitor and use the < m > b utton, < 5 > button, Cross k eys < å > < µ >, and < p > b utton to proceed to the ne xt step .
29 Setting Pr ocedure Exit the menu. • Press the < m > b utton to exit. 6 Set the desired setting. • Press the < p > b utton. The initial menu screen will reappear . 5 Select the menu setting. • Use the < å > or < µ > k eys to select the desired setting.

31 The color LCD monitor on the bac k of the camera enab les you to re view and select recorded images and set v ar ious menu settings . • The LCD monitor cannot be used as a vie wfinder to shoot. • The LCD monitor’ s br ightness can be adjusted with the menu’ s [ LCD Brightness ] setting ( ∆ ).
32 Setting the Date and Time Set the date and time as shown belo w . Select [Date/Time]. • Select the [ ∆ ] tab . • Press the < å > k eys to select [ Date/ Time ], then press < p >. s The Date/Time setting screen will appear . 1 Each captured image is recorded with the date and time it w as taken.
33 Replacing the Date/Time Battery The date/time batter y maintains the camera’ s date and time. The batter y’ s ser vice lif e is about 5 y ears. When the date/time batter y’ s po wer is lo w , “ ” will appear on the LCD panel. Replace the batter y with a ne w CR2016 lithium batter y as described below .
34 Cleaning the Ima g e Sensor (CMOS) The image sensor is like the film in a film-based camera. If any dust or other f oreign matter adheres to the image sensor , it ma y show up as a dark speck in the images. To a v oid this, f ollow the procedure belo w to clean the image sensor .
35 Clean the image sensor . • Use a rubber blo wer to carefully b low aw ay any dust, etc., on the surf ace of the image sensor . 4 T erminate the cleaning. • Set the P ower s witch to < 2 >. s The camera will turn off and the shutter will close.
36 Holding the Camera By adjusting the diopter to suit y our ey esight (with or without ey eglasses), the vie wfinder image will look clearer . The camera’ s adjustab le dioptric range is –3 to +1 dpt. T urn the dioptric adjustment knob. • Tu rn the knob left or right so that the AF points in the vie wfinder look shar p.
37 2 Full y A utomatic Shooting This chapter descr ibes ho w to use the camera’ s Basic Zone modes < Y > < U > < I > < O > < P > < A > < S > f or quic k and easy shooting. In these modes, all y ou do is point and shoot.
38 Y Full y A utomatic Shooting All y ou do is point the camera and press the shutter b utton. Ev er ything is automatic so it is easy to photogr aph any subject. With se v en AF points to f ocus the subject, any one can just point and shoot. AF point T urn the Mode dial to < Y >.
39 Y Fully A utomatic Shooting Shoot. • Compose the shot and press the shutter b utton fully . s The captured image will be displa yed f or about 2 sec. on the LCD monitor ( MENU ). 5 • When f ocus is achie v ed, the autofocus and auto e xposure setting will also be loc k ed.
40 Pr ogrammed Image Contr ol Modes Select a shooting mode to suit the target subject, and the camer a will be set to obtain the best results. F or the functions av ailab le in the Basic Zone modes, see the “Function Av ailability T able” (p .122).
41 Spor ts This is f or f ast-moving subjects when y ou w ant to freeze the action. • The camera will first tr ack the subject with the center AF point. F ocus tracking will then continue with an y of the sev en AF points cov ering the subject. When f ocus is achie v ed, the beeper will sound softly .
42 Re viewing Ima g es The image can be displa y ed on the LCD monitor immediately after y ou shoot. Y ou can set one of three image re view options: [ On ] to displa y the image, [ On (Inf o) ] to displa y both the image and shooting inf or mation, and [ Off ] to not displa y the image.
43 Y ou can set the image re view time to [ 2 sec. ], [ 4 sec. ], [ 8 sec. ], or [ Hold ] which k eeps the image display ed on the LCD monitor . Re viewing Images Changing the Re view Time Set the Re view time setting. • Press the < å > k eys to select the desired setting, then press < p >.
44 q Self-timer Operation Y ou can use self-timer in an y Basic mode or Creativ e mode. We recommend using a tr ipod when y ou use the self-timer . Press the < H • ´ > b utton ( ∫ ) . • Press the < H • ´ > b utton so that < ´ > appears on the LCD panel.
45 K Wireless Remote Contr ol With the optional Remote Controller RC-5 (optional), y ou can shoot remotely from up to about 5 meters/16.4 ft. in front of the camera. Press the < H • ´ > b utton ( ∫ ) . • Press the < H • ´ > b utton so that < ´ > appears on the LCD panel.
46 Using the Ey epiece Co ver During self-timer or remote control operation when y our ey e does not cov er the vie wfinder ey epiece, stra y light ma y enter the e yepiece and aff ect the e xposure when the image is captured. T o pre v ent this, use the e y epiece co v er (attached to the neck str ap) to co v er the ey epiece.
47 3 Settings f or Shooting This chapter e xplains the settings f or shooting digital images: Image-recording quality , ISO speed, white balance, processing par ameters, file n umber ing, and auto rotation.
48 Image-Recor ding Quality The widely-used JPEG f or mat is used f or image-recording quality settings other than < h >. Images captured in the < h > f or mat m ust later be processed b y a personal computer . F or e xample, when [ Large a ] is selected, the LCD panel will displa y < da >.
49 Image File Size and CF Card Capacity Accor ding to Image-Recor ding Quality • The maximum capacity applies to a 128 MB CF card. • The image siz e and CF card’ s maximum capacity are based on Canon’ s testing standards (at ISO 100 with [ Pa rameter 1 ] set).
50 D Setting the ISO Speed The ISO speed is a numeric indication of the sensitivity to light. A higher ISO speed number indicates a higher sensitivity to light. Theref ore, a high ISO speed is suited f or moving subjects or shooting in low-light conditions .
51 6 Selecting the White Balance Nor mally , the < Z > setting will set the optimum white balance automatically . If natural colors cannot be obtained with < Z >, y ou can set the white balance manually to suit the respectiv e light source .
52 Custom White Balance With custom white balance, y ou shoot a white object that will ser v e as the standard f or the white balance. By selecting this image, y ou impor t its white balance data f or the white balance setting. Shoot a white object. • The plain, white object should fill the vie wfinder center .
53 4 Select [ , ]. • Press the < 6 > ( ∂ ) b utton. ( ∫ ) • Tu rn the < l > dial to select < , >. s The custom white balance will be set. White Balance A uto Brac keting With just one shot, three images ha ving a different color tone can be recorded simultaneously .
54 • F ollow steps 2 and 3 to set the brac keting amount to < >, then press < p >. • Y ou can also set the P ower s witch to < 2 > to cancel white balance brac k eting. White Balance A uto Brac keting • During continuous shooting, the number of images recorded will be three times as many as the n umber of shots taken.
55 Selecting the Pr ocessing P arameter The image y ou capture can be processed to look more vivid or more subdued. The processing parameters can be set according to the preset P arameter 1, P arameter 2, and Adobe RGB . Or they can be set to Set 1, 2, or 3 that y ou can set yourself .
56 Setting Pr ocessing P arameter s The image y ou capture can be processed automatically by the camer a in accordance with the parameter settings y ou set (fiv e settings each f or [ Contrast ], [ Sharpness ], [ Saturation ], and [ Color tone ]). Y ou can register and sa v e up to three sets of processing parameters.
57 Setting Processing P arameters Select the parameter . • Press the < å > k eys to select the parameter , then press < p >. 4 Set the parameter . • Press the < µ > k eys to set the parameter , then press < p >. 5 Return to the [P arameter s] menu.
58 File Numbering The images y ou take are automatically assigned a file n umber from 0001 to 9999 and sa ved in a f older (created automatically) that can hold up to 100 images. The file number is akin to the fr ame number of film images . The automatic file numbering method can be set to [ Continuous ] or [ A uto reset ].
59 Setting A uto Rotation Ve r tical shots can be rotated automatically so that the y are displa y ed upr ight during pla yback. A uto rotation will w ork only with vertical images captured while [A uto rotate] was [On]. It will not w ork with ver tical ima ges captured while [A uto rotate] was [Off].
60 INFO . Chec king Camera Settings When the camera is ready to shoot, press the < 4 > button to vie w the current camera settings on the LCD monitor . Displa y the camera settings. • Press the < 4 > button. s The current camera settings appear on the LCD monitor .
61 4 Ad v anced Operations With Creativ e Zone modes, y ou can set the desired shutter speed or aper ture value to obtain the e xposure y ou want. Y ou tak e control of the camera. • Depth-of-field pre vie w , e xposure compensation, AEB , AE loc k, bulb , and white balance brac keting are possib le only in Creativ e Zone modes.
62 3 Selecting an AF P oint The AF point is used f or f ocusing. The AF point can be selected automatically b y the camera or manually b y you. In the Basic Zone modes and < Q > mode , the AF point selection is automatic only .
63 3 Selecting an AF P oint After achie ving f ocus, y ou can lock the f ocus on a subject and recompose the shot. This is called “ f ocus loc k .” Focus Loc k A utomatic AF point Selection Man ual AF point Selection Set the camera to a Creative Zone mode .
64 When A utof ocus F ails (Manual Focusing) A utof ocus can fail to achie ve f ocus (the f ocus confir mation light < n > b links) with cer tain subjects such as the f ollowing: (a) Low-contr ast subjects (blue sky , solid-color walls , etc.). (b) Subjects in lo w light.
65 Drive Mode Selection Press the < H • ´ > button. ( ∫ ) s The b utton toggles between the tw o dr iv e modes. • The continuous driv e mode can be selected in the Creativ e Zone modes. The drive mode can be set to single or contin uous (2.
66 T Pr ogram AE Lik e < Y > (Full A uto) mode, this is a general-pur pose shooting mode . The camera automatically sets the shutter speed and aper ture value to suit the scene’ s br ightness . This is called Program AE. ∗ T stands f or Program ∗ AE stands f or A uto Exposure Set the Mode Dial to < T >.
67 T Progr am AE • Ref er the “Function A v ailability T able” (p .122) for diff erence between Creativ e Zone modes and Basic Zone modes. Shifting the Pr ogram • In Progr am AE mode, y ou can freely change the shutter speed and aper ture v alue combination (program) set b y the camera while maintaining the same e xposure value .
68 R Shutter -Priority AE I n this mode, y ou set the shutter speed and the camera automatically sets the aper ture v alue to suit the br ightness of the subject.
69 • If the maximum aper ture b links, it indicates undere xposure. T ur n the < l > dial to set a slow er shutter speed until the b linking stops. Or increase the ISO speed. • If the minimum aper ture b links, it indicates ov ere xposure. T ur n the < l > dial to set a f aster shutter speed until the b linking stops.
70 E Aper ture-Priority AE In this mode , you set the desired aper ture v alue and the camera sets the shutter speed automatically to suit the subject brightness. The larger or brighter the aper ture value (lo wer f/number) the more b lurred the bac kground will become .
71 Depth-of-field Pre vie w Press the depth-of-field pre view b utton to stop down to the current aper ture setting. The diaphragm in the lens will be set to the current aper ture so you can chec k the depth of field (range of acceptab le f ocus) through the viewfinder .
72 f Manual Exposure In this mode, y ou set both the shutter speed and aper ture v alue as desired. T o deter mine the e xposure, ref er to the e xposure le vel indicator in the vie wfinder or use a handheld e xposure meter . This method is called manual e xposure.
73 Determine the e xposure . • Chec k the exposure le v el and set the desired shutter speed and aper ture v alue. 5 Shoot. 6 f Manual Exposure If the e xposure le v el mar k < v > b links at the < z > or < b > le vel, it indicates that the diff erence between the standard e xposure e xceeds +/ – 2 stops.
74 Q A utomatic Depth-of-Field AE This mode is f or obtaining a wide depth of field automatically betw een a near subject and f ar subject. It is effectiv e f or group photos and landscapes. The camera uses the se v en AF points to detect the nearest and f ar thest subjects to be in f ocus.
75 Set the exposure compensation amount. • Hold down the < ∑ > b utton and tur n the < l > dial to set the desired e xposure compensation amount. • To cancel the e xposure compensation, set the e xposure compensation amount to < >.
76 A uto Exposure Brac keting With auto e xposure brac keting (AEB), the camer a automatically changes the e xposure le vel up to +/ – 2 stops in 1/3-stop increments f or three successiv e shots. Standard e xposure Decreased e xposure Increased exposure Set the AEB amount.
77 • F ollow steps 1 and 2 to set the AEB amount to < >. • AEB will also be canceled automatically if y ou tur n the P ow er s witch to < 2 >, change lenses , hav e flash-ready , replace the batter y , or replace the CF card. Canceling AEB Neither flash nor b ulb exposures can be used in AEB mode .
78 j AE Loc k AE loc k enables y ou to lock the e xposure at a diff erent place from the point of f ocus. After locking the e xposure , y ou can recompose the shot while maintaining the desired e xposure le vel. This feature is useful f or bac klit and spotlighted subjects.
79 Bulb Exposures When b ulb is set, the shutter is open dur ing the time y ou keep pressing the shutter b utton fully . Bulb is useful when a long e xposure is necessar y f or captur ing night scenes , fireworks , the night sky , etc. Set the Mode Dial to < W >.
80 Using the Built-in Flash In the Basic Zone modes (e xcept < I > < P > < S >), the b uilt-in flash pops up and fires automatically in lo w-light and backlit conditions . T Select < T > mode f or full autoflash. The shutter speed and aper ture value are determined automatically , just as in < Y > (Full A uto) mode.

82 Using the Built-in Flash When flash is used in a lo w-light environment, the subject’ s e yes ma y come out red in the image . “Red ey e” happens when the light from the flash reflects off the retina of the e yes .
83 Using the Built-in Flash FE (flash e xposure) lock obtains and loc ks the correct flash e xposure reading f or any par t of a subject. It wor ks in Creativ e Zone modes. j FE Loc k Focus on the subject. • Press the shutter b utton halfwa y . K eep pressing the shutter b utton halfwa y until step 4 .
84 0 LCD P anel Illumination To illuminate the LCD panel, press the < 0 > b utton. T o tur n off the illumination, press the b utton again. The illumination will tur n off when y ou press the shutter b utton halfw a y . Metering Modes The camera has three metering modes: Evaluativ e , par tial, and centerweighted a v erage meter ing.
85 5 Ima g e Pla ybac k This chapter e xplains how to vie w and erase images and ho w to connect the camera to a TV monitor . Images not taken with the camera: The camera might not be ab le to properly display images captured with a diff erent camera or edited with a personal computer f or image processing or changing the file name.
86 Image Pla ybac k Y ou can select any image to vie w . Y ou can view a single image , the image inf or mation, an inde x displa y , or a magnified view . Press the < 4 > b utton. • As with the single image displa y mode e xplained abov e, y ou can use the cross k eys to vie w another image.
87 Histogram A histogr am is a graph indicating the image’ s br ightness . The hor izontal axis indicates the br ightness le vel (darker on the left and brighter on the right), while the ver tical axis indicates ho w many pix els exist f or each br ightness le v el.
88 Image Pla yback ˆ Inde x Display While the inde x is displa yed, press the < 5 > button and press the < µ > k e ys to jump nine images ahead or bac k. (p .90) Nine thumbnail images are displa yed on one screen. Displa y the index. • Press the < 8 > b utton.
89 The selected image can be magnified b y 1.5x to 10x on the LCD monitor . 92 The Rotate function can rotate an image 90° or 270˚ cloc kwise. This allows y ou to displa y images with the correct or ientation. Image Pla yback Rotating an Image Select [Rotate]. • Select the < ] > tab . • Press the < å > k eys to select [ Rotate ], then press < p >.
93 Connecting to a TV By connecting the camera to a TV set with the video cable (pro vided), y ou can view the recorded images on a TV set. Alwa ys tur n off the camera and the tele vision before connecting or disconnecting them. Be sure the camera is set to the video system f or mat (NTSC or P AL) compatib le with the TV set.
94 Image Pr otection Y ou can protect images to pre v ent accidental erasure. Select [Pr otect]. • Select the < ] > tab . • Press the < å > k eys to select [ Pr otect ], then press < p >. s The protect setting screen will appear .
95 9 Erasing an Image Y ou can erase images individually or er ase all the images at one time in the CF card. Only protected images will not be erased. Once an image is erased, it cannot be reco vered. So be careful when erasing an image. T o prevent important images fr om being erased accidentally , protect it.
