The following guides are available. Refer to them as necessary according to the flowchart below. In this guide, the Basic Camera Us er Guide is called the Basic Guide , and the Advanced Camera Us er Guide is called the Advanced Guide .
1 Preparat ions 1. Installing the batteries. 1. Slide the m emory card slot/batte ry cover lock in the direction of the arrow and open the cover. 2. Insert the 2 su pplied AA-size a lkaline batteries, or separately sold AA-size NiMH batteries. 2. Inserting the Memory Card.
2 To Remove the Memory Card Push the memory card with your finger until the memory card clicks and then release it. You can use SD* memory c ards and MultiMe diaCards with th is camera. These cards are collectively called memory cards in this guide.
3 Preparat ions First Time Settings Setting the Date/Time 1. Press the power button ( a ). 2. Use the or button to select an item and the or button to change its valu e ( b ). 3. Confirm that the correct tim e is displayed an d press the FUNC./SET button ( c ).
4 1. Press the pow er button. The start-up sound will play and the start-up image will display in the LCD monitor. • Pressing the power button again turns the power off. • Pressing the power button while pressing and holding the DISP. button will turn on t he mute setting which will mute all sounds except for warning sounds.
5 Shooti ng Reviewing an Image Right Af ter Shooting After a shot is taken, the image appears in the LCD monitor for approximately 2 seconds. You can continue to display imag es regardless of the review duration setting with the following procedures. • Keeping the shutter button pressed after a shot.
6 Image zone Night Scene Allows you to capture hu man subject s against t he backdrop o f an evening sky or nigh t scene. The flash is directed at the person and the shu tter speed is slow, so both the person and the background can be beautifully shot.
7 Shooti ng Imag e zone Stitch Assist Allows you to sh oot overlappi ng images that can la ter be merged (stitched ) to create one panoramic i mage on a computer.
8 Using the Zoom 1. Press the zo om lever toward or . The zoom can be adjusted from 35 mm – 210 mm (focal length) in 35mm film equivalent terms. The zoom bar appears when you pre ss t he zo om l ever . Using the Flash 1. Press the button to cycle through flash sett ings.
9 Shooti ng You are r ecommended to shoot with the camer a attached to a tripod or other device i f the camera shake warning icon appears. When the LCD monitor is on and flash recharging begins, the lamp blinks orange and the LCD monitor turns off. When recharging ends, the orange lamp turns off and the LCD monitor turns on.
10 Shooting Close-ups (Macro) 1. P ress the butt on. When using the zoom in macro mode, a yellow bar appears below the zoom bar to indicate the range i n which you cannot use macro mode to sh oot the subject. If the zoom bar enters the yellow bar range, the macro mode icon will turn gray.
11 Playback/ Erasing 1. Set the mode switch to (playback)( a ) . The last recor ded image will appear in the LCD monitor. 2. Use the or button to display the imag e yo u wish to v iew ( b ). Use the button to move to the previous image and the button to move the next image.
12 Settings for the shooting, playback or print modes or such camera settings as the date/time and sounds are set using t he FUNC., Rec., Play, Print, Set up or My Camera menu. FUNC. Menu This menu sets many of the common shooting functions. a Set t he mode s witch t o (sho oting) .
13 Menus and Setti ngs Rec., Play, Print, Set up and My Camera Menus Convenient settings for shooting, playback or printing can be set with these menus. a Press the MENU button. b Use the or button to switch between menu s. • You can also use the zoom lever to switch between menus.
14 Connect the camera to a direct print compatible printer* 1 with a cable and simply pres s the button on the camera. 1. Connect the camera to a dir ect print comp atible prin ter and turn on the printer’s po wer.
15 Prin ting 2. Turn on the pow er in pl ayback mod e and confirm that , or is dis played in th e upper le ft of the LCD monitor ( a ). • The button will light blue. • The displayed icon will vary according to the printer model. 3. Select an im age to pri nt using the or button ( b ) and press the button ( c ).

19 Downloadin g Images to a Computer 2. Connecting the camera to a computer. 1. Use the supplied interface cable to connect the computer’s USB port t o the camera’s DIGI TAL terminal. Slip your fingernail under the right edge of the camera’s terminal cover, lift it open and plug the interface cab le in all the way.
20 Downloading Images to a Computer A window allowing you to set the preferences will appear when a connection is established between the camera and computer. 1. Select [Canon Ca meraWindow] and click [OK] (firs t time only). 2. Download the images . • Download the images using the camera or the computer.
21 Downloadin g Images to a Computer Downloading Images to a Comput er The following window will appear w hen you establish a connection between the camera and computer. If it fails t o appear, click the [Canon CameraWindow] icon on the Dock (the bar which appears at the bottom of the des ktop).
22 Downloading Images Using the Camera (Direct Transfer) Use this metho d to download image s using camera ope rations. Install the supplied software and adjust the computer settings before using this method for the first time (p. 18). 1. Confirm that the Direct Transfer menu is disp layed o n the camera ’s LCD monitor.
23 Downloadin g Images to a Computer Select & Transfer/Wallpaper 2. Select or , and p ress the button (or the FUNC./SET button). 3. Select image s to downlo ad and pr ess the button (or the FUNC./SET butto n). • The images will download. The button will blink blue while downloading is in progress.
24 Safety Pr ecauti ons Be sure to read, understand and follow the safety precautions below when using the camera , in order to prevent injury, burns or electrical shock to y ourself and others. Be sure to also read the safety precautions listed in the Advanced Camera User Guide .
