Always ensure that the camera is operated correctly. • The safety precautions noted on the following pages are intended to pre vent injuries to yourself and other persons, or damage to the equipment.
Safety Precautions 10 Battery and Battery Charger Other Warnings • Use only recommended batteries. • Do not place the battery near or in direct flame. • Do not let the battery come into contact with water (e.g. sea water) or other liquids. • Do not attempt to disassemble, alter or apply heat to the battery.
11 Safety Precautions • When using the flash, be careful not to cover it with your fingers or clothing. This could result in burns or damage to the flash. Caution • Do not aim the camera at bright light sources (the sun, etc.). Doing so may cause malfunctions or damage the image sensor.

13 1 Getting Started This chapter explains preparations before shootin g, how to shoot in A mode, and then how to view and erase the images yo u take. The latter part of this chapter expl ains how to shoot and view images in Easy Mode, how to shoot and view movies and how to transfer images to a computer.
14 Charging the Battery Use the incl uded charge r to charge the batter y. Be sure to charge the battery as it is not charge d at the time of purchas e. 1 Remove the cov er. 2 Insert the batte ry. ● Align the S marks on the battery and charger, then insert the battery by sliding it in and down .
15 Charging the Battery Approximate Number of Shots That Can Be Taken • The number of shots that can be taken is based on the Camera & Imaging Pro ducts Association (CIPA) measurement standard. • Under some shooting conditions, the number of shots that can be taken may b e less than mentioned above.

17 Inserting the Battery and Memory Card 4 Insert the memory card. ● Insert the memory card as shown until it locks into place with a click. ● Be sure the memory card is orie nted correctly. Inser ting the memory card in the wrong direction could damage the camera.
Inserting the Battery and Memory Card 18 Approximate Number of Shots per Memory Card • Values are based on the default settings. • The number of shots that can be taken will vary depending on camera settings, the subject and the memory card used.
19 Setting the Date and Time The Date/Time settings sc reen will appe ar the first t ime the camera is turned on. Since the d ates and times r ecorded into your images are based on thes e settings, be sure to set them. 1 Turn on the cam era. ● Press the ON/OFF button.

22 Formatting Memory Cards Before yo u use a ne w memory car d or one that has bee n formatted i n other devices, yo u should fo rmat the card wi th this camer a. Formatting ( initializin g) a memory card er ases all data on t he memory card. As you cannot re trieve the e rased data, ex ercise adequ ate caution bef ore formatting the memory card.
23 Pressing the Shutter Button X When formatting e nds, [Memory card formatting complete ] will appear on the screen. ● Press the m button. Pressing the Shutter Button To take images that are in focus, be su re to first p ress the shu tter button lightly ( halfway) to f ocus, then press fully to shoot.
24 Taking Pictures (Smart Auto) Since the camer a can determin e the subject and shooting conditions, yo u can let it automatically select the best settin gs for the scene and just shoot. The camer a can also detect and focus on fa ces, settin g the color and brightness to opt imal levels .
25 Taking Pictures (Smart Auto) X When the camera focuses, it will beep twice and AF frames will appear where the camera focuses. Several AF frames will appear when the camera focuses on more than one point. 5 Shoot. ● Press the shutter button fully.
Taking Pictures (Smart Auto) 26 Under certain conditions, the icon that appears may not match the actual scene. Especially when there is an or ange or blue colore d background (a wall for example), or the “Including Blue Skies” icons may appear and it may not be possible to shoot wit h the appropriate color.
27 Viewing Images You can view the images you have t aken on the scre en. 1 Enter Playback mode. ● Press the 1 button. X The last image you took will appear. 2 Choose an image. ● Pressing the q button will cycle through the images in the reverse order they were taken, from the newest image to the oldest.
28 Erasing Images You can choose an d erase imag es one at a time. Ple ase note that erased images cann ot be recovere d. Exercise adeq uate cautio n before er asing an image. 1 Enter Playback mode. ● Press the 1 button. X The last image you took will appear.
29 Shooting in Easy Mode In Easy mo de, operat ional instru ctions are displayed on the sc reen, and the camera is set so that only the buttons expl ained on this page and the zoo m button are fu nctional. This prevent s incorrect ope ration of th e camera, allowing even be ginners to t ake worry-free p ictures.
30 Viewing or Erasing in Easy Mode In Easy mo de, operat ional instru ctions are displayed on the sc reen, and the camera is set so t hat only the bu ttons explai ned on this p age are funct ional. This prev ents incorr ect operat ion of the c amera, allow ing even beg inners to view and erase i mages without wor ry.
31 Shooting Movies The camera can aut omatically se lect all sett ings so that you c an shoot movies just by pressing the s hutter butto n. 1 Enter E mode. ● Set the mode dial to E . 2 Compose th e shot. ● Pressing the zoom button toward i will zoom in on your sub ject, making it ap pear larger.
Shooting Movies 32 X Recording will start, and [ Rec] and the elapsed time will appear on the screen. ● Once shooting begins, take your fin ger off the shutter button. ● If you change the composition of your shot during shooting, the focus will stay the same, but the brightness and to ne will automatically adjust.
