10 • Before using the product, please ensure that you read the safety precautions described below. Always ensure that the product is used correctly. • The safety precautions noted on the following pages are intended to prevent injuries to yourself and other persons, or damage to the equipment.
Safety Precautions 11 • Use only the recommended battery. • Do not place the battery near or in direct flame. • Unplug the power cord periodically, and using a dry cloth, wipe away any dust and dirt that has collected on the plug, the exterior of the power outlet, and the surrounding area.
Safety Precautions 12 Caution Denotes the possibility of damage to the equipment. • Do not aim the camera at bright light sources (such as the sun on a clear day). Doing so may damage the image sensor. • When using the camera on a beach or at a w indy location, be careful not to allow dust or sand to enter the camera.
13 • Take and revie w some test shot s initially to make sure the i mages were recorded cor rectly. Pleas e note that Can on Inc., it s subsidiari es and affiliate s, and its dis tributor s are not .
14 The camera’s touch-scree n panel enable s intuitive op eration simpl y by touching o r tapping the scre en. Touch the sc reen briefly with your finger. z This gestur e is used to shoot , configure camera functio ns, and so on. Touch the screen and mo ve your finger across it.
15 Prepare for shooting as fol lows. Attach the strap. z Thread the end of the strap thro ugh the str ap hole ( ), and then pul l the other e nd of the strap thro ugh the loop on t he threaded en d () . z Place the st rap around your wrist. z When shoot ing, hold th e camera se curely to prevent it from movin g.
Initial Preparations 16 Before use , charge th e battery wit h the inclu ded charge r. Be sure to charge the battery initially, b ecause the camera is not sold with the battery ch arged. Remove the cover. Insert the battery. z After alignin g the S marks on the batt ery and charger, ins ert the battery by push ing it in ( ) and do wn ( ).

Initial Preparations 18 Insert the i ncluded ba ttery and a memory card (s old sepa rately). Note that befor e using a new memory card (or a memory card formatted in another devi ce), you should format the memory card with this camera (p. 161). Open the battery cover.
Initial Preparations 19 Insert the memory card. z Insert the memor y card facing as show n until it clicks in to the locke d position . z Make sure the memory card is facing the r ight way when you in sert it. Insert ing memory cards facing the wr ong way may damage the camera.
Initial Preparations 20 Check the card’s write-protect tab. z Recording i s not possibl e on memory cards with a write- protect tab w hen the tab is in th e locked (down ward) positi on. Slide t he tab up until it clic ks into the unlocked p osition.
Initial Preparations 21 Remove the battery. z Open the cov er and press the batter y lock in the direct ion of the arrow. X The battery wi ll pop up. Remove the memory ca rd. z Push the memory card in until i t clicks, and then slow ly release it . X The memory card will pop up.
Initial Preparations 22 Adjust the date and ti me as follows. Access the camera menu. z Touch H , and the n touch n . Choose [Date/Time]. z Touch the 3 tab. z Drag up or down across the scree n to choose [Date/Time]. z Touch [Date/ Time]. Change the date and time.
Initial Preparations 23 The display language can be changed as neede d. Enter Playback mode. z Press the 1 button. Access the setting screen. z Touch and hold n until the se tting screen is displayed. Set the disp lay languag e. z Touch a displ ay language to choose it, and then touch ^ .
24 Follow th ese instru ctions to turn the c amera on, sh oot still images or movies, and then view the m. For fully auto matic selectio n of the optimal settings for sp ecific scene s, simply let the camer a determine t he subject and shooting con ditions.
Trying the Camera Out 25 z Aim the came ra at the su bject. As t he camera determines the scene, it will make a slight clicking no ise. X A scene icon is displayed i n the upper lef t of the screen and an imag e stabilizat ion icon i n the upper right .
Trying the Camera Out 26 Shoot. z Press the shutter but ton all the w ay down. z As the camera sh oots, a shutt er sound is played, and in lo w-light condi tions, the flash fires auto matically. z Keep the camer a still until the shutter sou nd ends. X Your shot remains disp layed on th e screen for about tw o seconds.
Trying the Camera Out 27 After shooti ng images or movi es, you can vie w them on the scre en as follows. Enter Playback mode. z Press the 1 button. X Your last s hot is disp layed. Browse thro ugh your i mages. z To view the nex t image, drag r ight to left across th e screen, and t o view the prev ious image, drag l eft to right.
Trying the Camera Out 28 You can ch oose an d erase un needed i mages one by one. Be careful when erasing image s, because they can not be recovered . Choose an image to erase . z Drag left o r right a cross the screen to choose an image. Erase the image.
29 The softwar e and the manuals on the includ ed CD-ROMs are int roduced below, with instruction s for instal lation, sav ing images to a computer, and using the manua ls. After instal ling the soft ware on the CD-ROM, yo u can do the following thin gs on your computer .

Special Modes for Other Purposes 98 The camera will sho ot about two seco nds after detec ting that the face of another per son (such as th e photographe r) has entere d the shootin g area (p. 116). Th is is useful when including yo urself in gr oup photos or si milar shots.
Special Modes for Other Purposes 99 Join the subjects in the shooting area and look at the camera. X After the camera detects a ne w face, the lamp blinking and self-timer sound will speed up . (When the flash fires, th e lamp will remain lit.) About two second s later, the camera will shoot.
