Preparation - 10 - ∫ About the [CHARG E] indicat or The [CHARGE] indicator tu rns on: The [CHARGE] indicator A is turned on during charging. The [CHARGE] indicator tu rns off: The [CHARGE] indicator A will turn off once the charging has c ompleted without any problem.

Preparation - 12 - Note • The operating times and number of recordable pictu res will differ according to the environme nt and the operating conditions. For example, in the follo w ing cases, the ope rating times will short en and the numbe r of recordabl e pictures is reduced: – In low-temp erature env ironment s, such as on ski slopes.
- 13 - Preparation Inserting and Removin g the Card (optiona l)/the Battery • Check tha t this unit is turned of f. • We recommend using a Pana sonic ca rd. (DMC-FS 35) Slide t he card/battery door to open it. • Always us e genuine Pan ason ic batter ies.
Preparation - 14 - (DMC-FS 18) (DMC- FS16) (DM C-FS14) Slide t he releas e lever in the direction of the arrow and open the card/battery door . • Always us e genuine Pan ason ic batter ies. • If you use othe r batteries, we cannot guarantee the quality of this product.
- 15 - Preparation The AC Adaptor ( optional) can only be used with the designated Panasonic DC Coupler (opti onal). The AC Adaptor ( optional) canno t be used by it self. 1 Open the card/battery door . 2 Insert the DC Coup ler , being careful of the direction.
Preparation - 16 - About the Built-in Memory /the Card • Y ou can copy the recorded pictures to a card. (P98) • Memory siz e: Approx. 70 MB • The acces s time for th e built-in memory may be longer tha n the ac cess time fo r a card.
- 17 - Preparation The following cards, which conform to the SD video standard, can be used with this unit. (These cards are indicated as card in the text. ) ¢ SD S peed Class is the spee d standard rega rding continuo us writin g. Check via the la bel on the card, etc.
Preparation - 18 - ∫ About the display of the numb er of recordable pictures and available recording time ∫ Number of recordable pictures •[ i 99999] is dis played if there are more than 100,000 pi ctures r emaining.
- 19 - Preparation Setting Date/Time (Clock Set) • The clock is not s et when the cam era is shipped. Slide t he [Rec]/[Playba ck] selector swit ch t o [ ! ] and then turn the camer a on. • If the langua ge select scre en is not displayed, proceed t o step 4 .
Preparation - 20 - Select [Clock Set] in the [Rec] o r [Setup] menu, and p ress [MENU/SET ]. (P35) • It can be chan ged in steps 5 and 6 to set the clock. • The clock setting is maint aine d for 3 months using t he built-in clock battery even without the battery .
- 21 - Basic Basic Selecting the [Rec] Mod e ∫ List of [Rec] M odes Note • When the mode has been switc hed from [Playb ack] Mode to [Rec] Mode, th e previously set [Rec] Mode will be set . Slide t he [Rec]/[Playba ck] selector swit ch t o [ ! ]. Press [MODE].
Basic - 22 - [Rec] Mode: ñ T aki ng pictures using the autom atic function (Intelligent Auto Mode) The camera will set the most appropriate settings to match the subject and the recording conditions so we recom mend this mode f or beginners or those who want to leave the settings to the camera and take pictures easily .
- 23 - Basic • Be sure to atta c h the strap when using t he camera to ensure tha t you will not drop it. • Hold the camer a gently w ith bo th hands, keep your arms stil l at your si de and st and with your feet s lightly apart . • Be carefu l not to move th e c amera whe n you press the shutter button .
Basic - 24 - When the camera identifies the optimum scene, the i con of the scene concerned is displayed in blue for 2 seconds, after wh ich its colour changes t o the usual red. •[ ¦ ] is set if non e of the scenes are applicab le, and the st andard settings are set.
- 25 - Basic [Rec] Mode: · T aki ng pictures with your favou rite settings (Normal Picture M ode) The camera automatically sets the shutt er speed and the aperture value according to the brightness of the subject. Y ou can take pictures with greater freedom by changing various settings in the [Rec] menu.
Basic - 26 - Focusing Aim the AF area at the subject, and t hen press the shutter button half way . • AF area is displ ayed larger during the Digit al Zoom or when it is dark. ∫ About focu s ran ge The focus range is displayed when operating the zoom.
- 27 - Basic ∫ When the subject is not in focus (such as when it is not in the centre of the composition of the picture you want to take): 1 Aim the AF area at the subject, and press the shutter bu tton half way to fix the focu s and exposure. 2 Press and hold the shutter button half way while moving the camera as you compose the picture.

Basic - 30 - [Rec] Mode: n Motion Picture Mode Slide t he [Rec]/[Playba ck] selector swit ch t o [ ! ], and then press [MODE]. Press 3 / 4 / 2 / 1 to se lect [Motion Picture], and then press [MENU/SET]. Press the s hutter button halfway to focus and then press it fully to st art recording.

Basic - 32 - [Playback] Mode: ¸ Playing Back Motion P ictures The file format t hat can be played bac k with this camera is QuickTime Motion JP EG . Press 2 / 1 to select a picture with a Motion Picture icon (such as [ ]), and th en press 3 to play ba ck.
- 33 - Basic [Playback] Mode: ¸ Deleting Pictures Once deleted, pictures cannot be recovered. • Picture s on the built-in memor y or the card that are being pla yed back will be dele t ed. T o delete a single picture Select the picture to be delet ed, and then press [ ].
Basic - 34 - Note • Do not tu rn the camera off while del eting. Use a batter y with suf ficien t battery power or th e AC adaptor (op t ional) and DC coupler (opti onal). • Dependin g on the number of picture s to be delet ed, it may t ake some time to delete t hem.
- 35 - Basic Setting the Menu The camera comes with menus that allow you to choose the settings for taking pict ures and playing them back just as you like and menus that enable you to have more fun with the camera and use it more easil y .
Basic - 36 - ∫ Close the menu Press [ ] s everal times or press the shutter butto n halfway . Note • Due to th e camera’ s specifications, it may not be po ssible to se t some of the functio ns or some functi ons may not work in some of the co ndition s under which the c amera is used .

Basic - 40 - • Refer to P2 8 for informatio n about how to play back pictu res. • When you pla y back pictures on a PC, they canno t be displayed in the rotate d direction unless the OS or software is comp atible with Exif. Exif is a file format for still pictures which allows recording informati on etc.
- 41 - Basic • The S tabilizer functi on is switched between [ON ] and [OFF] eve ry time [MENU/SET] is pressed during the [S tabilizer Demo.]. • In Playback Mode , [S tabilizer Demo.] canno t be disp layed. • [S tabilizer Demo.] is an a pproximation.
Recording - 42 - Recording About the LCD Monitor Press [DISP . ] to change. A LCD monitor • When the men u screen a ppears, the [DISP .] bu tton is not activate d. During Pl ayback Zoom, while p laying back motion pi ctures and duri ng a slide show , you can only select “ Normal display E ” or “ No display G ” .
- 43 - Recording [Rec] Mode: ñ· ¿n T aki ng Pictures with the Zoom Y ou can zoom-in to make people and objects appear closer or Zoom-out to record landscapes in wide angle. (DMC-FS 35) T o make subjec ts appear ev en closer (maximum of 18 k ), set the [P ictu re Siz e] to [10M ] or less.
Recording - 44 - • When using the Z oom function, an estimate of the focus ra nge will appear in conjunction with th e zoom display bar . [Example: 0.5 m (1.64 ft.) – ¶ ] ¢ The mag nification level dif fers dep ending on [Pict ure Size] s etting.

Recording - 48 - ¢ The flash is activated twice. T he subject should not mov e until the second flash is activated. Interval un til the second flash depends on the brightness of the subject.

Recording - 52 - [Rec] Mode: ñ· ¿ T aki ng Pictures with the Self-tim er Press 2 [ ë ]. Press 3 / 4 to sel ect a m ode an d the n pr ess [M ENU/ SET]. Note • When you pr ess the shu tter butt on once full y , the subj ect is automatically fo cused just before recording.
- 53 - Recording [Rec] Mode: ·¿ n Compensating the Exposure Use this function when you c annot achieve appropriate expos ure due to the difference in brightness between the subject and the background. Look at t he following examples. Note • EV is an abbreviatio n of [Exposure V alue].
Recording - 54 - [Rec] Mode: ¿ T aki ng pictures that match the s cene being recorded (Scene Mode) When you select a Scene Mode t o match the su bject and recording situation, the camera sets the optimal exposure and hue to obtai n the desired picture.
- 55 - Recording Y ou can register the Scene Mode you use m ost frequently as one of the Recording Modes. Slide t he [Rec]/[Pla yback] sel ector switch to [ ! ], and then press [MODE]. Press 3 / 4 / 2 / 1 to select [ ] ([My Scen e Mode]) and then pres s [MENU/SET].
Recording - 56 - When taking pictures o f people outdoors during the dayti me, this mode allows you to improve the appe arance and make their skin tones look healt hier . ∫ T echnique fo r Portr ait Mode T o make this m ode more ef fective: 1 Rotate the zoom lever as far as possible to T ele.
- 57 - Recording Select this to take pictures of yo urself. ∫ T echnique fo r Self Por trai t Mode • Pre ss the shutter button hal fway to focus. The Sel f-timer indicator lights up when you are brou ght into focus. Making s ure you hold the camera still, press the shutter but ton fully to take th e picture.
Recording - 58 - Y ou can take pictures with connections suitable for creating panorama images. ∫ Set ting the r ecordi ng directi on 1 Press 3 / 4 to select the recording direction and then press [MENU/SET]. • The horizont al/vertica l guidelin e will be displayed.
- 59 - Recording Set here when you want to take pictur es of sports scenes or other fast-m oving events. Note • Shu tter speed may slow down up to 1 s econd. • This mode is su itable f or takin g pictures of subject s at distance s of 5 m (16.4 feet) or more.
Recording - 60 - This mode allows y ou to take pictures of food with a natural hue without being affected by the ambient light in restaurants etc. Select this when y ou want to take pictures at a wedding recept ion, an indoor party etc. This allows you to take pictures of people and the background with near real-life brightness.
- 61 - Recording This takes pictures of a baby with a healthy complexion. When you us e the flash, the light from it is weaker t han usual. It is possible to set different birthdays and nam es for [Baby1] and [Baby2].
Recording - 62 - Select this when you want to t ak e pictures of a pet such as a dog or a cat. Y ou can set your pet’s birthday and name. For information about [Age] or [Name], refer to [ Baby1]/[Baby2] on P61 . Select this when y ou want to take pictures of a sunset view .
- 63 - Recording This is a c onvenient mode for shooting rapid move ment or a decisive moment. ∫ Picture size Select the picture size of 3M (4:3), 2.5M (3: 2) or 2M (1 6:9). S till pictures are taken continuously w h ile the shutter button is pressed fully .
Recording - 64 - S till pictures are taken continuously w ith flash. It is convenient to take continuous still pictures in dark places. ∫ Picture Size Select the picture size of 3M (4: 3), 2.5M (3: 2) or 2M (1 6:9). • S till pictures are taken continuously while the shutt er button is press ed fully .
- 65 - Recording This mode allows you to take b eautiful pictures of fireworks exploding in t he night sky . ∫ T echnique fo r Firewor ks Mode • Since the shutter speed bec omes slower , we recommend using a tripod. Note • This mode is most ef fective when the subjec t is 10 m (32.
Recording - 66 - Picture is taken darker and with sof t focus around the subjects. Note • Face Detec tion may not operat e normally in the dark areas around th e edges of th e screen. Picture is taken with a grainy texture as t hough blasted with san d.
- 67 - Recording Record the ima ge with a frame around it . ∫ Setting the frame Select from 3 types of frames. Note • The colou r of the frame dis played on the screen and th e colour of th e frame around the act ual image may dif fer , but t his is not a malfun ction.
Recording - 68 - [Rec] Mode: ñ· ¿n Recording Useful Functio ns at T ravel Des tinations For details on the [Setup] menu settin gs, refer to P35 . If you set the dep art ure date or the t ravel destination of t he vacation in advance, the number of days t hat have passed since the dep arture date is recorded when you t ake the picture.

Recording - 70 - For details on the [Setup] menu settin gs, refer to P35 . Y ou can display the local times at the travel dest inations and record them on the pictures you take.
- 71 - Recording Using the [Rec] Mode Me nu For det ails on [Rec] Mode menu set tings, refer to P35 . Set the number of pixels. The higher the nu mbers of pixels, the finer the detail of the pictures will appear even when they are printed ont o large sheets.
Recording - 72 - Note • A digit al pictur e is made of numerous dot s called pixels. The hig her the numbers of pixels , the finer the picture will be when it is printed on a larg e piece of pape r or displayed on a PC monitor . • The Extra Optical Zoom does n ot work when [Macro Zo om] is se t or in [T ransfo rm], [High S ens.
- 73 - Recording For det ails on [Rec] Mode menu set tings, refer to P35 . This allows the Sensitivity to light (ISO sensit ivity) to be set. Setting to a higher figure enables pictures to be taken even in dark plac es without the resulting pictures coming out dark.
Recording - 74 - For det ails on [Rec] Mode menu set tings, refer to P35 . In sunlight, under incandescent lights or in other such conditions where the colour of white takes on a reddish or bl uis h tinge, this it em adj usts to the colour of white which is closes t to what is seen by the eye i n accordance with the light source.
- 75 - Recording ∫ Auto White Bal ance Depending on the conditions prevailing when pictures are taken, the pictures may take on a reddish or bluish tinge. Furthermore, when a multiple number of light sources are being used or there is nothing with a colour close to white, Auto White Balance may not function properly .
Recording - 76 - For det ails on [Rec] Mode menu set tings, refer to P35 . This allows the appropriate focusing method to be selected. Applicable modes: ·¿ Note • The AF Mode is fixed to [ Ø ] i n [Starry Sky], [Fire works] i n Sce ne Mode . • It is not p ossible to set [ š ] in the f ollowing cases.
- 77 - Recording ∫ Set ting up [ ] (A F T racking) Bring the subject to the AF tracking frame, and press 4 . A AF trac king fram e • AF area will be display ed in yellow when a subject is recognised, and focus will automat ically adjust continuously follo wi ng the subje ct’s moveme nt (Dynam ic tracking ).
Recording - 78 - For det ails on [Rec] Mode menu set tings, refer to P35 . Contrast and expos ure will be adjusted automatically when there is a big difference in brightness between the background and subject, to bring the i mage close to real life. Applicable modes: ·n [ON]/[OF F] Note • [ ] in the scre en turns to yellow wh en [i.
- 79 - Recording For det ails on [Rec] Mode menu set tings, refer to P35 . Pictures are taken continuously wh ile t he shutter button is pressed. Select the ones you really like from among the pictures you have taken. Applicable modes: ñ· ¿ [ ˜ ]/[O FF] Note • About [Burst] – The burst speed becom es slower ha lfway .
Recording - 80 - For det ails on [Rec] Mode menu set tings, refer to P35 . Using these modes, the pictures can be made shar per or softer , the colours of the pictures can be turned into sepia colours or ot her colour effects can be achieved. Applicable modes: ñ·n ¢ 1 This can be set only when Intelligent Auto Mode is set.

AF assist lamp will illuminate the subject when the shutter button is pr essed half-way making it easier for the camera to focus when recording in l o w light conditions. (Larger AF area is displayed depending on the recording conditi ons.
Recording - 82 - For det ails on [Rec] Mode menu set tings, refer to P35 . Using one of these modes, jitt er during picture taking is detected, and the camera automatically compensates the jitter , enabling jitter-free images to be taken.
- 83 - Recording Entering T ext It is possible to enter babies’ and pet s’ names and the nam es of travel destinations wh en recording. (Only alphabet ical characters and symbols can be entered.) Displa y the ent ry scr een. • Y ou can display th e entry screen via the following operat ions.
Playback/Editing - 84 - [Playback] Mode: ¸ Playback/Editing V arious meth ods to playback Y ou can playback the recorded pictures in various methods. Slide t he [Rec]/[Pla yback] sel ector switch to [ ( ], and then press [MODE]. Press 3 / 4 / 2 / 1 to select item, and th en press [MENU/SET].
- 85 - Playback/Editing Y ou can play back the pict ures you have taken in synchronisation with mu sic, and you can do this in sequence while l eaving a fixed interval between each of the pictures. Furthermore, you c an play back the pict ures grouped together by category or play back only those pictures you have set as favourites as a slide show .
Playback/Editing - 86 - ∫ Changing the slide show settings Y ou can change the settings for Slide Show Playback by selecting [Effect] or [Setup] on the slide s how menu screen. [Effect] This allows you to select the screen ef f ects or music ef fects when switching from one picture to the next.
- 87 - Playback/Editing The images s orted into the category or images s et as favourite are play ed back. ∫ About the categories to be sorted It will be sorted as following when [Category Selection] is set.
Playback/Editing - 88 - Y ou can display pictures by rec ording date. Note • The rec ording date o f the picture selected in the play back screen bec omes t he da te sele c ted when the calendar scree n is first disp layed. • If the re are multipl e pictur es with the same recording date , the first pictur e recorded on t hat day is displayed.
- 89 - Playback/Editing [Playback] Mode: ¸ Using the [Playback] M ode Menu Y ou can set up pictures to be uploaded t o image sharing sites and perform actions like cropping recorded pictures, as well as set up the protection of recorded images, etc. • With [T ext S tamp], [ Resize] o r [Cropping], a n ew edited picture is cre ated.
Playback/Editing - 90 - Y ou can stamp the recording date/time, name, location or tr avel date onto the recorded pictures. Select [T ext St amp] on the [Playbac k] Mode menu. (P35) Press 3 / 4 to sele ct [SINGLE ] or [MUL TI] and then pre ss [MENU/SET].
- 91 - Playback/Editing Press [ ]. Press 3 to selec t [OK], and then press [MENU/SET]. • Confir mation scr een is displayed. It is execut ed when [Y es] is sele cted.
Playback/Editing - 92 - T o allow easy posting to web pages, att ac hment to email etc., picture size (number of pixels) is reduced. Select [R esize] on the [Pl ayback] Mo de menu. (P35) Press 3 / 4 to sele ct [SINGLE ] or [MUL TI] and then pre ss [MENU/SET].
