CHECKING T H E BATTERIES 1. Turn the power switch O N . B e sure to check t h e batteries as well. Wh en replacing the batteries, make su r e t o turn the power switch OF F before unloading the batteries. Display lights (turns off automatically). blinks and other indicators on the LCD panel ar e displayed normally.

RE-MOUNTING T HE C A P WHEN I T COMES OF F T o prevent the hinge joint from breaking, the cap wil l come of f if to o much force i s used w h en opening it. (D o no t attempt to remove the c a p deliberately as repeated disconnection of th e c ap will loosen t h e hinge j o i n t , increasing the likelihood that the cap will come off.
LOADING THE FILM 1. Slide t he b ac k cover release upward to op en th e b a ck cover. 2. L o ad the film. Caution: Be s u re never to l et anything touch the shutter curtains as they ar e extremely thin and h av e a high-precision design. A n y contact with your fingers or film ma y damage or permanently deform t h e shutter curtains.
3. Align th e t ip o f the film leader with the mark as shown, a nd close the back cover. The fi lm automatically advances to the first frame. M a ke sure T he film d o e s n o t overlap an y of the positioning guides shown above. Note: Make su re th e film i s lying flat.
4. Turn the power switch ON . Notes: • Place the film leader along t h e arrow a s shown. • Film information c an b e checked through the film window. The exposure counter o n the L C D panel reads . Note:lf blinks i n t he exposure counter, a s shown above, reload the film.
TAKING PICTURES Follow this procedure f o r normal photography. When the power switch i s turned ON , th e camera i s i n the Full-Auto mode. (p. 4 3 ) 1. Turn the power switch ON . 2. While looking through the viewfinder, press th e zoom button to determine t he composition.

4. Depress th e shutter release button halfway. 5. Without removing your finger from the shutter release button, depress fully to take the picture. USING T H E FOCUS LOCK When the ma in subject i s no t i n the center of the autofocus frame, follow the procedure below. T h is is called focus lock. 1.
UNLOADING THE FILM Th e camera automatically rewinds the film when you reach th e e n d of a roll. M a k e sure the motor h a s stopped a n d is blinking on t he LCD panel before opening th e back cover a n d removing the film. Rewinding the film before the end of t he roll Notes: • Th e number of exposures will decrease during rewinding.
TAKING PANORAMA PICTURES Panorama model only Selecting the Panorama Mode Push th e panorama sw itch u p to change to t he Panorama mode. Push the switch down t o return to the Standard mode. Notes: • Pu s h th e switch all t he wa y; don't stop i t halfway.

FLASH PHOTOGRAPHY Three flash modes a re available to suit different requirements. Ho w t o Select the Flash Mod e 1. Se t the power switch to to flip u p the flash. 2. Press th e FLASH button to select th e flash mode. Th e camera will recharge the flash, an d the flash will b e ready to use.

Auto Flash T h e flash fires automatically i n dark places, with backlighting and under fluorescent lighting. Set the fl a s h mode to AUTO. 2. Press the shutter release button halfway to make su re lights i n th e viewfinder. I n certain conditions, the flash ma y n o t fire under fluorescent lighting.
3. Press the shutter release button fully. A u t o Flash Range (with color negative film) Maximum distance i s about 7 0 % when using reversal color film. Note: The shutter speed i s automatically set a t 1/100-sec. whe n th e flash fires. Th e flash will n o t fire i f t h e existing light level requires a shutter speed greater than 1/100-sec.
Red-Eye Reducing Flash AUTO-S Approximately 2 0 pre-flashes are emitted before the main flash fires, significantly reducing t he phenomenon of "red-eye" (when a subject's ey es appear red). This mode is t h e same as Auto Flash except f o r the pre-flashes.
Forced Activation FILL-IN I n this mode, the flash always fires. Even i n backlighting, both the subject a nd background c a n b e shot clearly. A n d p o rtraits look lively b y reducing shadows o n the subject's fac e. 1. Make sure th e exposure mod e i s s e t t o FULL AUTO.
SELFTIMER 1 . Press the /REMOTE control button until i s displayed on t he LCD panel. Press the shutter release button. F i x the camera firmly o n a tripod or ot her support. Th e shutter w i l l be released 1 2 seconds la ter. Notes: • Do not press the shutter release button fr o m right i n f ro nt of the camera.
USING T H E EXPOSURE M ODES There are four preset settings f or eas y shooting i n various common situations, as well as an Aperture-Preferred Auto mode an d Lo ng Tim e mod e that allow yo u to select your own settings. Exposure Modes F o r easy, effective shooting i n various common situations: Stop Action ( p .
STOP ACTION T o freeze moving subjects. I n this mode, t he c am e ra automatically selects a faster shutter speed to reduce blurring o f moving subjects. (M ax . shutter speed: 1/2000-sec.) Also i n this mode, the predictive autofocus helps achieve more precise focusing on moving subjects.
PORTRAIT To take pictures with blurred backgrounds for "portrait" effect. Th e portrait mode lets y o u take beautiful portrait photographs. This i s especially effective w h en t he l e n s i s a t th e telephoto setting and/or when there i s a great distance between t he subject a nd the background.
LANDSCAPE T o take pictures with extended in-focus backgrounds. Whe n shooting landscapes or landscapes wi th subjects i n the foreground, a l l objects n ea r an d fa r ar e sharply i n focus. 2. Press t he shutter release button. Press the button. Note : Set t he l en s a t wi de angle fo r optimal results.

S p o t frame In situations li ke the o ne illustrated above, the subject will be dark because of backlighting. Position the subject f o r spot metering within the s po t frame, an d press the SPOT/L.T. button. i s displayed o n the LC D panel and the exposure i s locked.
Recompose the shot, then press the shutter release button to take the picture. Notes: • Wh en th e flash is flipped u p , or the Night Scene or Long Time mode is engaged, th e camera does n o t perform sp o t metering. • After t h e shot, the Sp ot Metering mo de is canceled.
Notes: •When t h e shutter release button is pressed halfway, +/- wi ll b e displayed i n the viewfinder. • Exposure compensation i s possible u p to ± 2 EV in 1/2-EV increments.

TAKING BETTER PICTURES EFFECTS OF Z O O M A N D I T S ADVANTAGES Z o o m l e n s focal length i s changed b y moving part of the lens. Wi th this camera, you ca n se l ec t a ny focal l ength between 28 m m a nd 110 mm.
Angle o f vie w and depth of field Angle o f view i s directly related to the focal depth of field ( t h e distance i n fr on t of an d behind t he subject tha t the camera i s able to bring into focus). T h e greater the angle of vi ew (wide angle), th e greater the depth of field.
AUTOFOCUS (AF) Although this camera's autofocus c an lock o n virtually a n y subject, there are certain conditions, such a s shown below, where i t m a y n o t b e possible to obtain the correct focus.
• Fo cu s on another subject a t the desired camera-to-subject distance first. Then recompose t he frame to take th e picture. •When t he subject locks out-of- focus although the autofocus indicator lights, focus o n another subject a t th e desired camera-to-subject distance first.
Programmed Chart (FULL AUTO) T h e following program chart i s for 2 8 m m wide- angle and 11 0 m m telephoto focal lengths. According to t he focal length, the camera's program itself changes.
Portrait Mo d e I n th is mode, the camera chooses a wid e aperture fo r a shallow depth of fi e l d . This r esults i n a softly blurred subject background, against which your subject stands out i n sharp f o cu s . This m od e also prevents camera-shake from happening because a faster shutter speed i s selected.
F i l m Speed F i lm speed is indicated on th e ba ck of film packages. I SO 100, ISO 200, and I SO 400 a r e th e mo st common. High-speed fil m (ISO 400), a s implied by its name, is f o r taking photos of fast- moving subjects i n action shots, for example.
Preferred A u to mode, this light metering system i s automatically activated. When the contrast between bright an d da rk areas is no t too extreme outside the center o f the frame, t h is system of fer s excellent results. Spot Metering Spo t metering (Fig.

CAMERA MAINTENANCE QUESTIONS A N D ANSWERS Q : H o w long will the batteries last? A: Tw o ne w 3V lithium batteries will last f o r roughly 2 0 rolls o f 24-exposure film on which t he flash w as used o n half of all the shots (determined under Olympus test conditions).
CARE AN D STORAGE D o n ot leave the camera i n any place exposed to excessive heat, humidity, or direct sunlight - f o r example, i n a c a r or on the beach. D o n o t expose th e camera to formalin or naphthalene. I f t he camera get s wet, wipe i t with a d r y towel immediately.
• Kee p the camera i n a well-ventilated place. • D o n o t expose th e camera to extrem e heat (over 40°C/104°F) or to extreme cold (below -10°C/14°F). Low temperatures, even within this range, may som etimes cause deterioration i n battery performance, temporarily disabling the camera.
• D o not short, disassemble or charge the batteries. Never throw batteries i n t o f ir e because this can result i n splitting or explosion. • S tore batteries ou t of the reach of children. If a battery i s swallowed, consult a doctor immediately.
TROUBLESHOOTING Operating Problems Symptom Th e camera doe s n o t work. The LCD panel tu rn o ff suddenly. blinks and th e shutter cannot b e released. blinks even when th e flash i s n ot flipped u p . Th e autofocus indicator blinks an d the shutter cannot be released.

Problems wit h Printed Pictures Symptom Th e subjects' eyes appear re d i n printed pictures. Th e subject was within the frame o f the viewfinder, b u t its edges a re missing on th e print. The picture i s out of focus. The picture i s too dark.
