19 Loading the batteries 1 Gett ing star ted • Manganese (zinc-carbon) batteries cannot be used. • If the battery power runs out whil e the camera i s connected to a PC or printer, the image dat a may be lost or damaged. You are re commended to use the AC ad apter when transfe rring images to a P C.
20 1 Gett ing star ted Inserting a card "Card" in thi s manual refer s to the xD-Picture Car d. The camera uses th e card to record pictures. Card basics The card corresponds to norma l camera film for recor ding the pictures yo u have taken.
21 Inserting a card 1 Gett ing star ted 1 Make sure that: 2 Open the card cover. 3 Face the card the correct way and insert it into t he card slot as shown in the illustration . • Insert the card while keeping it straight. • The card stop s with a click when it is inserted al l the way.
22 1 Inserting a card Gett ing star ted Removing the card 1 Make sure that: 2 Open the card cover. 3 Push the card all t he way in to unlock it, and let it return slowly. • The car d is ejected a short way and then stops. 4 Hold the card straigh t and pull it out.
23 1 Gett ing star ted Power on/off When sh oot ing pi ctures (Sh ootin g mode ) Power on: Open the lens barri er fully. The camera turns on in the sh ooting mode.
24 1 Power on/off Gett ing star ted TIPS • To save battery pow er, the camera automatically ent ers the sleep mode and stops operating if not used for 3 min utes. If the monitor is on, it will automatically turn off . The lens retracts automaticall y 5 minutes after that.
25 Power on/off 1 Gett ing star ted TIPS • When the camera t urns on, the moni tor may light up moment arily and a picture may be displayed briefly. This is not a malfunction. • Never open the card cover, remo ve the card or the batt eries, or connect or disconnect the AC ada pter while t he camera is turne d on.
26 1 Power on/off Gett ing star ted Startup/Shutdown screen This image is di splayed on t he monitor each time the camera is turned on or off. You can also use your fav orite image. This camer a has 7 shooting modes to choose from dependin g on the shoo ting condit ions and the ef fect you want to a chieve. The factory def ault set ting of the shoo ting mode is PROGRAM AUTO.

Eve n if the b utton is not pressed, the mode will be set and the screen will disappear.

If you t ake a pi cture of a street at night in any othe r mode, t he lack of bright ness will r esult in a dark picture with only do ts of light showin g.
44 3 Shooting b asics T aking still pictures You can take still pictures using eit her the monitor or the viewfi nder. Bot h methods are easy as all you have to do is to press the shutter butto n. Taking still pictures using the monitor With the monitor , you can sh oot whil e checking t he pi cture area that t he camera actually records.

Little batte ry power is used . You can check the picture area that the camer a actually records more accurately.

52 3 If correct focus cannot be obtained Shooting b asics Subjects that are difficult to focus on Under certain types of conditions, the auto focu s may not work properly. If this happens, focus on an object with high contrast at t he same distance as t he intended su bject (focus lock), recompose your shot and then ta ke the pict ure.
53 3 Shooting b asics Night scene mode Setting the mode to Night scene allows you to take landscape shots at night under optimum co ndition s. In this mode, the shut ter speed is not fixed to 1/30 second maximum when t he flash is act ivated. Dependi ng upon the subj ect or shooting condit ions, shutter speed may extend up to 2 se conds.

57 3 Shooting b asics Zoom Telephoto and wi de-angle shooting are possible at 3x magnifi cation (the optical zoom limit, equivalent to 35 mm – 105 mm on a 35 mm camera). By combining the op tical zoom with the digita l zoom, zoom magnificati on can be increased to a maximum of approximat ely 12x .

62 3 Using the flash Shooting b asics Fill-in flash ( ) The flash fires regardless of the availab le light.This mode is useful for eliminating sh adows on the subject’s face (such as shadows from tree leaves), in a backlight situation, or for corr ecting the col or shift prod uced by artificia l lighting (espe cially fluorescent light).
63 4 Advanc ed shoot ing 4 Advanced shooting Macro mode shooting The macro mode allows you t o shoot at a distance of 20 cm to 50 cm (0.7 ft. to 1.6 ft.) from your subject. Regular phot ographs can be ta ken, bu t the camera may take time to focus on distant subjects .

65 4 Advanc ed shoot ing Super macro mode s hooting This mode lets you shoot from as cl ose as 7 cm/2.8" to your subje ct. In the mode, normal shooting is also possible, but the posi tion of the zoom is fixe d automatically and cannot be changed.
66 4 Advanc ed shoot ing Self-timer shooting This function is useful for taking pict ures where you want to be i ncluded in t he photograph. Fix the camera securely on a tr ipod or set it on a level surface for self- timer shooti ng. 1 Open the lens ba rrier fully.

69 4 Advanc ed shoot ing P ANORAMA You can take advantag e of panorama shooting with the Olympu s xD-P icture Card. Panorama sh ooting lets you connect pict ures with overlapp ing edges into a single panoramic pictu re, using the CAMEDIA Master so ftware.
70 4 PANORAMA Advanc ed shoot ing 3 Make sure that the edg es of the pictures ove rlap, and take pictures. • Focus, exposure and whit e balance are set by the f irst picture. Do not select an extremely bright subje ct (such as the sun) for the first picture.
71 4 Advanc ed shoot ing T aking two-in-one pictures This function allows you t o combine two pict ures taken in succession and store them as a single picture. You ca n combine two diff erent subjects in one picture. 1 In the shooting mode top men u, select MODE MENU → CAMERA → 2 IN 1, and press .

75 Selecting a record mode 4 Advanc ed shoot ing TIPS • Resolution The number of pi xels (horizontal x vertical) used when savi ng an image. If the image will be printed, higher resolutions (larg er numbers) are recommended so that the image will be clearer.

79 4 Advanc ed shoot ing Adjusting th e white balance Color reproduct ion differs depe nding on the light condi tions. For instance, when daylight, the setting sun, or tung sten light ing are reflected on whit e paper, the sh ade of white produced will be slightly diff erent for each.
