4 Chapter 1 Inserting a Picture Card Think of Picture Cards as removable and reusable f ilm, or remo vable computer memory . Picture Cards, also called memory cards, provide easy picture storage and transf er . See page 82 for Picture Card st orage capaci ties.
5 Chapter 1 Turning the Camera On and Off 1 T o turn on the camera, slide the pow er switch to the On ( | ) posi tion. The built -in lens cover open s and the Status Displ ay turns on. If the Mode dial is set to Cap ture ( ), the lens is exte nde d. 2 T o turn off the camera, slide the pow er switch to the Off ( ) pos ition.
6 Chapter 1 Checking the Batteries Check the batte ry power level in the St atus Disp lay before yo u begin taki ng pictures. Don ’ t miss an important picture because the camera bat teries are low or exhausted. 1 T urn on the camera. 2 Check the battery s ymbol that app ears in the Status Display .
7 Chapter 1 Setting the Clock The camera has a built-in clo ck that mai ntains the dat e and time in a 24-h our format. If the battery is removed from the camera for an extended period of time, or is exhau sted, you may need to rese t the clock.
8 Chapter 1 Mode Dial—Settings and Menus Use the Mode dial to access three ways to use your camera: Capt ure — take pictures and change picture-ta king options Review — view and work with your p.
9 Chapter 1 Review Menus T o access the Review mode menus: 1 T urn the Mode dial to Review . 2 Press the Menu bu tton. 3 Use the arrow buttons to scroll through th e menus and submenus.
10 Chapter 1 Setup Men us T o a ccess the Set up mode me nus: 1 T urn the Mode dial to Set up . The Setup menu screen is displayed on the LCD. 2 Use the arrow buttons to scroll through th e menus and submenus.
11 Chapter 1 Navigating Throu gh the Menus The method of movi ng through t he menus and se lecting o ptions i s the same in all three camera modes. T o display the menus on the LCD screen: m In Ca pture , and Re view mo des, press the Menu bu tton. In Review mode, the menus are displayed on the screen with a picture.

13 2 T aking Pict ur es Before you take pictures, make sure there is a Pi cture Card in the camera, the Mode dial is turn ed to Capture , and the c amera is on. Taking a Picture 1 Center the subject in the viewfinder or use Prev iew ( page 15 ). 2 Press the Shutter button half-way to lock in the auto-focus and exposure.
14 Chapter 2 Viewing and Deleting the Last Picture When you take a picture, Aut omatic QuickView displays the picture on the LCD screen for several seconds. While the picture is displa yed, you can decide to keep it or d elete it. This feature is ideal for verifying picture informat ion.
15 Chapter 2 Previ ewing Your Pic ture If you wa nt to see what a picture loo ks like bef ore it is t aken, you can preview a live image on the LCD screen. With Preview activated, use the LCD instead of the viewfind er to frame you r picture. NOTE: Preview is required when you are using digital zooming ( page 18 ).
16 Chapter 2 Shooting a Burst Seri es of Pictures The Burst featu re allows you to ta ke up to 8 pictures in quick successio n. When you shoot with the B urst feature, the Flash an d the Self Timer features are disabled. Burst is available in the Pi cture Quality menu ( page 2 4 ).
17 Chapter 2 Shooting Distant and Close-Up Pictures T o choose the settin g: 1 Set the Mode dial to Cap ture . 2 Press the Close-Up /Distant button repe atedly unt il the app ropriate icon appea rs in the Status Displ ay on top of the camera. 3 Press the Shutter but ton half-way to lock t he auto-focus and expo sure.
18 Chapter 2 Using Zoom Y ou r camera offers optical and digi tal zoom features. Use optical zoom to get up to t wo times c loser (2X) to your subj ect. The n, to get even closer , use digi tal zoom for an addi tional 3X. In optical zoom, the camera lens extends or retracts as you push the zoom buttons.
19 Chapter 2 Using the Fl ash When you take pictu res at night, indoors, or out doors in heavy shadows, your pictures may need flash. The camera flash is effecti ve at the following distances, dependi ng on you r zoom positi on. m Press the Flash button repeatedly to scroll through the fl ash options.
20 Chapter 2 Putting Yourself in the Picture The Self T imer creates a 10-second delay between the time you press the Shutte r button and the time the pict ure is taken. Th is settin g is ideal when you want to inclu de yourself in the picture. 1 Press the Self Ti mer button.
21 3 Customizing Pictur e-taking Settings Use Capture on the Mode dial to customize your picture-taki ng settings. Setting Exposure Compensation Use the Exposure Compensa tion feature to control how much light is allowed into the camera. Y ou can adjust th e exposure by plus or minus 2 stops in 1/2- stop increments.
22 Chapter 3 Setting White Balance Whites can look whit e in daylight , but diff erent under other light ing condit ions. Use the White B alance setting to correct f or these types of colo r shifts th at result from shooting pi ctures under diff erent ligh t sources.
23 Chapter 3 Setting a Color Mode Use the Col or Mode setting f or controlli ng color to nes and mood s. Selec t color , black and white, or sepia. The camera Preview displays the color setting selected. 1 T urn th e Mode di al to Capt ure and press Menu .
24 Chapter 3 Setting the Picture Quality Use the Qualit y setting to select a picture resolution . 1 T urn th e Mode di al to Capt ure and press Menu . 2 Highlight the Quality me nu , then press Select. 3 Highlight the Q uality setting you want to use.
25 Chapter 3 Setting Exposure Metering T o ensure proper exposure, your camera features three metering systems for measuring the amount of light enteri ng the camera lens: Mult i-Pattern, Cent er - W eight ed, a nd C ente r Sp ot mete ring . 1 T urn th e Mode di al to Capt ure and press Menu .
26 Chapter 3 Setting Picture Sharpness Use the Sharpness setting to highl ight or blend the edges of the subject in pictures. 1 T urn th e Mode di al to Capt ure and press Menu . 2 Highlight the Sharpness menu , then press Select. 3 Highlight the Sharpn ess setting you want to use.
27 Chapter 3 Setting the ISO Sp eed The ISO setting controls the camera ’ s sensitivity to light. U se a lower ISO setting in brightly lit scenes, use a higher ISO setting for low-light scenes. 1 T urn th e Mode di al to Capt ure and press Menu . 2 Highlight the ISO Speed menu , then press Select.
28 Chapter 3 Setting the Shutter Speed Use the Auto set ting and l et the came ra automati cally set t he shut ter speed. O r choose a shutter speed from 0.7 to 16 seconds, for longer exposures w hen taki ng pic tures in low-l ight conditio ns, with out flas h.
29 Chapter 3 Placing the Date on Pictures Use the Da te & T ime Stam p setting to imp rint the date , or the dat e and time, on the lower -right corner of the picture. NOTE: This se tting is ideal for recording when a pi cture was take n; for example, for a birthday or an insurance claim.

31 4 Reviewing Y our Pictures Use the Review setting on the Mode dial to revi ew and w ork with the pictures that are stored on the Pi cture Card in your ca mera.
32 Chapter 4 Viewing Pictures With the Filmstrip 1 T urn the Mode dial t o Review , then press Menu to display the Fil mstrip. 2 Press the arrow buttons to scroll through the F ilmstrip. T o c ontin uously scr oll, press and ho ld an ar row bu tton. Fo r fast scrolling through the memory bar , press Selec t while holdi ng an arrow button.
33 Chapter 4 Magnifying Pictures Use the Magnify feature to zoom in on specific parts of a picture. With this feature, you can magnify at two or four times the norma l magnification level. NOTE: This feature is ideal for checking detail and verifyi ng sharp focus on your pictures.
34 Chapter 4 Deleting Pictur es Use the Delete feature to quickl y delete one or all pictures from the Picture Card. NOTE: Delet e pictures to free up space on the Picture Card. 1 T u rn the Mode d ial to Review and press Me nu. 2 Press an arrow button to display the picture you w ant to delete.
35 Chapter 4 Protecting Pictures Use the Protect feature to prevent spec ial pictures from being acci dentally deleted from the Pic ture Card. 1 T u rn the Mode d ial to Review and press Me nu. 2 Press an arrow butt on to display th e picture you want to protect .
36 Chapter 4 Running a Slide Show Use the slide show feature to automatic ally display your pictures on the camera LCD screen at a selectable interval rate. You can also run a slide show on any video device that is equipped w ith a video inpu t, such as a tel evision, comput er monitor , or digital project or .
37 Chapter 4 Selecting Pictures for Automa tic Printing Use the Pri nt Order feature to select spe cifi c pictures and print quantit ies to be printed a utomatical ly to a KODAK Pe rsonal P icture Maker or other direct- print-en abled printe r . NOTE: This feature saves ti me when printi ng.
38 Chapter 4 5 If you selec ted Cancel Print Order or Index Print, a screen appears that asks you to confirm your cho ice. Answer Y es or No. If you selec ted Current Picture or All Pictures, the # Co pies screen appears. Press an arrow bu tton to select th e number of pri nts you want (0-99 ).
39 5 P ersonalizing Y our Camer a Use Setup on the Mo de dial to c ustomize the camera settings accordi ng to your personal preferenc es. Selecting a Power Save Setting The Power Save feature is designed t o balance battery consumpt ion with camera performance.
40 Cha pte r 5 Sett ing D igita l Zo om B ehavi or Digital zoo m provides th ree times (3X) magni fication be yond the opti cal zoom. Y ou can speci fy how the d igital zoom f eature behaves when you push T el ephoto (T) on the 4-way arrow but ton beyond the limi t of optica l zoom.
41 Cha pte r 5 Adjusting the Camera Sounds The camera provides sou nds (beeps) to le t you know when certain functions are being performed. You can set the camera t o make soun ds for most functio ns, for selected funct ions, or to make no sounds at al l.
42 Cha pte r 5 Setting Video Out The Video Out feature allows you to match the camera video-out signal to the standard applicable in your area. 1 T u rn the M ode d ial to S etup . 2 Highlight the Video Out menu , then press Sele ct. 3 Highli ght the V ideo Out set ting you want to use.
43 Cha pte r 5 Formatting a Pictu re Card Y o u may need to format a Picture Card if the card becomes corrupted. When this happens, an error message appears on the L CD screen. See page 67 for error messages. 1 T u rn the M ode d ial to S etup . 2 Highlight the Format Card menu , then press Select.

55 8 Using the K OD A K EASY SHARE C amer a D ock The KODAK EASYSHA RE Camera Dock (Camera Dock) makes it easier than ever to transfer your pictures to the computer . In addition, the Camera Dock is a rapid battery charger for the included KODAK Ni -MH Rechargeable Battery Pack, and the Camera Dock supplies pow er to the camera.
56 Chapter 8 Installing the Dock Insert KODAK DX-series cameras are package d with a Dock i nsert, which i s used to custom-fit the camera to the Camera Dock . 1 Place the front tabs o n the i nsert into the slots in th e Camera D ock cavit y . 2 Fit the insert dow n into the cavity and snap the insert into place.
57 Chapter 8 Installing the Battery Pack in the Camera 1 Open the batt ery door on the bottom of the came ra. 2 Install th e Battery Pac k in the direc tion of the arrows, as illustrated. CAUTION: The Battery Pack can only be inserted into the camera in the orien tatio n shown.

61 9 T roubleshooting P roblems There may be times when you have questi ons about using your KODA K EASYSHARE D X3900 Zoom Digit al Camera or KODAK EASY SHARE Camera Dock. 62 Chapter 9 Camera Commu nications Probl e m Cause Solution The comput er cannot communicate w ith the camera. There is a problem with the co nfigurati on of t he USB port on your computer. Go t o th e onl ine h elp for KODAK Camera Con nection Software ( p age 52 ), see Gettin g Started: Connect the Camera to Your Comput er.
63 Chapter 9 Camera Problem Cau se Solutio n Shutter bu tton does not work. Camera is not tu rned on. Turn on t he camera ( page 5 ). The camera is processing a picture, the viewfi nder l ight is bli nki ng. Wait until th e light stops bli nking before attemp ting to take another pi cture.
64 Chapter 9 Camera does not turn on. Battery is no t proper ly installed . Remove and reinstall the batte ries ( page 3 ). Battery is n ot charged. Replace or recharge the batte ries ( page 3 ). Camera freezes up when a Picture Card is inserted or removed.
65 Chapter 9 Picture is not clear. The l ens is dirty. Clean the lens ( page 8 0 ). Subject too close when ta king pi cture. Move so there is at least 1.6 ft (0.5 m) between the camera and the subject. Or use the Close-Up setting ( page 17 ). Subject or the camera moved while the picture was taken.
