14 Attach ing th e Strap and Le ns Cap Attaching the st rap 1 Attach the strap to the strap mounts on the camera. Once you have attached both ends of the strap, check carefully to make sure that the strap is firmly secured. 2 Attach the lens cap cord to the lens cap.

16 Loadin g the Ba tteries 2 Load the b atteries correctly as indicated by the polari ty ico ns. CAUTIO N Battery polarity is also indicated on the camera. Match the polarity icons ( + and , ) of the batteries to those on the inside of the battery cover.
17 Getting Ready Notes on batt eries • Soil, such as fingermarks on the poles of the batteries, can shorten time for which the batteries can be used. • The time for which AA-size alkaline batteries (referred to hereafter simply as alkaline batteries) can be used varies depending on the brand.
18 Load ing the Me mory Card Although you can store pictu res i n the came ra’s i nternal memory, you can stor e many more images on the Memory C ard (so ld separ ately). You can u se the xD- Picture Card and the SD Mem ory Card with the F inePix S8100fd .
19 Getting Ready CAUTIO N Be sure to unlock the protection of the SD Memory Card before inserting it. If it is locked, recording/deleting images, as well as formatting are not available. To unlock the protection, slide the switch back, and the SD Memory Card will work normally.
20 Load ing t he Memo ry Card CAUTIO N • When storing Memory Cards, make sure that they are kept out of the reach of children. A Memory Card could be swallowed and ca use suffocation. If a child swallows a Memory Card, seek medical attention or call emergency number right away.
21 Getting Ready Turn ing On and Off Turning the camera on in Shooting mode Slide the ON/OFF switch to turn the came ra on in Shooting mode . Slide the ON/OFF switch again to tu rn the camera o ff. 28 Taking Pictures ( B AUTO Mode) 5 Press the shutter button fully. CAUTIO N When taking a picture using the flash, the image may disappear and go dark briefly due to flash charging. The indicator lamp blinks orange during charging. MEMO • When the subject is not in the AF frame , use AF/ AE lock to take the picture ( ➝ p.
29 Using the Camera Z Indicato r lamp display The indicator lamp lights or blinks when pr essing the shu tter button, etc. The i ndicator lamp shows th e camera status.
30 Taking Pictures ( B AUTO Mode) CAUTIO N • If the camera is unable to detect faces in an image, it will not correct the red-eye effect sufficiently, or not at all. • Correction results may differ depending on the scene. • The processing may take more time if there are many faces in an image.
31 Using the Camera Subjects not suitable for Intell igent Fa ce Det ection Intelligent Face Detection automatically focuses on a face(s). However, difficulties will occur with the Intelligent Face Detection mode in the following situations: • The face is ob scured by glasses, sunglasses, a hat or hair.
32 Taking Pictures ( B AUTO Mode) CAUTIO N Camera shake and blurring may remain depending on scenes. Taking pictures with the focus and exposur e locked In the ab ove com position, the sub jects ar e not in the AF frame. P ressing th e shutter b utton halfwa y at this point will result in the su bjects being out of focus.
33 Using the Camera 1 Move the camera slightly so that one o f the subjects is in the AF frame. 2 Press the sh utter button d own halfway t o focus on the subject. 3 Continue to hold the shut ter button down halfway. Move the cam era back to the original image and press t he shutter button full y.

35 Using the Camera Using zoom function Use the zoo m lever to t ake picture s with zoom function. The zoom bar appears o n the screen w hile th e zoom lever is being used. Us e digital zoom w hen you w ant to s hoot the s ubje ct clo ser ( ➝ p.112, 116).
36 Taking Pictures ( B AUTO Mode) Position the m ain subject a t the interse ction of two lines in th is f rame or ali gn one o f the horizo ntal lines with the hori zon. Use thi s fr ame as a guide t o the subje ct’s size and the b alance o f the s hot while com posing a shot.

43 Using the Camera MEMO To erase another frame (file), repeat above steps. When erasing frames (files) is completed, press DISP/ BACK. CAUTIO N Pressing MENU/OK repeatedly erases consecutive frames (files). Take care not to erase a frame (file) by mistake.

Selecting a larger number o f aperture (closed) obtains a larger depth of focus. Selecting a smaller number of aperture (open) has the area in front of and behind the subject out of focus.

67 Advanced Features — Photography MEMO Red -eye effe ct When using the flash to take a picture of people in low- light conditions, their eyes sometimes appear red in the picture. This is caused by the light of the flash reflecting off the inside of the eye.
