17 Getting Ready Load ing th e xD-Picture Card Although you can store pictu res i n the came ra’s i nternal memory, you can stor e many more images on the xD- Pictur e Card (sold sepa rately). There is a slot for the xD- Pictur e Car d inside the batter y compartm ent.
18 Loadin g the xD -Picture Card CAUTIO N • When storing xD-Picture Card s, make sure that they are kept out of the reach of children. An xD-Picture Card could be swallowed and cause suffocation. If a child swallows an xD-Picture Card , seek medical attention or call emergency number right away.

20 Tur ning On an d Of f Setting the language, date, an d time When usin g the camera for the firs t time after pur chasing, the lan guage, da te, and time are cleared . Set the langua ge, date, and tim e. 1 screen app ears when turning the camera on.

25 Using the Camera 2 Check the composition on the L CD monitor. To adjust zoom scale u sing the Zoom button: MEMO •S e l e c t e Macro mode to take close-up shots ( ➝ p.47). • Use digital zoom when you want to shoot the subject closer ( ➝ p.91).
26 Taking Pictures ( AUTO Mo de) 4 Press the shutter button fully. CAUTIO N When taking a picture using the flash, the image may disappear and go dark briefly due to flash charging. The indicator lamp blinks orange during charging. MEMO • When the su bject is n ot in the AF frame, use AF/AE lo ck to take the picture ( ➝ p.
27 Using the Camera Z Indicato r lamp display The indicator lamp ligh ts or blinks when pressing the shutter bu tton, etc. T he indicato r lamp sho ws the ca mera status.
28 Taking Pictures ( AUTO Mo de) Taking pictures with the focus and exposure locked In th e abo ve com pos iti on, the su bje cts ( two pe opl e in th is case) are not in th e AF fra me. Press ing the sh utter b utton halfway at this point will result in the subje cts being out of focus.
29 Using the Camera 3 Continue t o ho ld the shutter butt on down halfway. Move the camera back to the original image and p ress the shutter b utton full y. MEMO • AF/AE lock can be applied repeatedly be fore the shutter is released. • Use AF/AE lock in all Photography modes to guarantee excellent results.
30 Taking Pictures ( AUTO Mo de) AF-assist illuminat or Use this illuminator to focus on th e subject in dimly lit conditions. When p ressing t he shutter button down hal fway, th e camera fires the AF-assist illuminator (wh ite) while focusing on your subje ct.
31 Using the Camera Position the m ain subject a t the interse ction of two lines in th is f rame or al ign one of the horizo ntal lines with the hori zo n. Us e thi s fr ame as a guide t o the subje ct’s size and the b alance o f the s hot while com posing a shot.

37 Using the Camera MEMO To erase another frame (file), repeat above steps. When erasing frames (files) is completed, press DISP/ BACK. CAUTIO N Pressing MENU/OK repeatedly erases consecutive frames (files). Take care not to erase a frame (file) by mistake.
38 Erasi ng the Ima ges/Mo vies MEMO • When using an xD-Picture Card , the images in the xD- Picture Card are erased. When not using an xD- Picture Card , the images in the internal memory are erased. • Protected frames (files) cannot be erased. Unprotect the frames (files) before erasing them ( ➝ p.

44 Setting t he Shoot ing Mode Use this mod e to shoot fireworks. It is effective for tak ing more vi vid shots of fireworks with a slo w shutter. CHECK • Flash cannot be used in the Fireworks mode. • Shutter speed setting: 1/2 sec. to 4 sec. • Use a tripod to prevent camera shake in the Fireworks mode.

When the data includes a frame (file) with DPOF settings that were specified on another camera, “RESET DPOF OK?” appears. Pressing MENU/OK erases all of the DPOF settings already specified for each frame (file).

85 Advanced Features — Movie MEMO If the subject of the shot is very bright, white vertical streaks or black horizontal streaks may appear in the image during playback. This is normal. CAUTIO N • You may not be able to play back some movie files recorded on other cameras.

89 Settings Use this s etting to set the way for displaying th e check image scre en (photogra ph result) after taking a picture. CAUTIO N The color tones in images displayed when 3 SEC or 1.5 SEC is selected may differ slightly from those in the images actually recorded.
