17 Getting Ready Load ing th e Batt ery 1 Open the battery cover. CHECK Check that the camera is turned off before opening the battery cover. CAUTIO N • Do not open the battery cover while the camera is on. This could damage the Memory Card or ruin the image files on the Memory Card.

19 Getting Ready Load ing th e Memor y Card Although you can store pictu res i n the came ra’s i nternal memory, you can stor e many more images on the Memory C ard (so ld separ ately). You can u se the xD- Pictur e Card and the S D Mem ory Card w ith the Fi nePix F40fd / F inePix F45fd / FinePi x F4 7fd.
20 Load ing the Me mory Card CAUTIO N Be sure to unlock the protection of the SD Memory Card before inserting it. If it is locked, recording/deleting images, as well as formatting are not available. To unlock the protection, slide the switch back, and the SD Memory Card will work normally.
21 Getting Ready CAUTIO N • When storing Memory Cards, make sure that they are kept out of the reach of children. A Memory Card could be swallowed and ca use suffocation. If a child swallows a Memory Card, seek medical attention or call emergency number right away.

23 Getting Ready Setting the language, date, an d time When usin g the camera for the firs t time after pur chasing, the lan guage, da te, and time are cleared . Set the langua ge, date, and tim e. 1 screen app ears when turning the camera on. 2 Set the date and time .

29 Using the Camera 2 Check the composition on the L CD monitor. To adjust zoom scale u sing the Zoom switch: MEMO • S elect e Macro mode to take close-up shots ( ➝ p.57). • U se digital zoom when you want to shoot the subject closer ( ➝ p.111).
30 Taking Pictures ( B AUTO Mode) MEMO • The shutter button has a halfway point at which focus and exposure are automatically optimized before taking the picture by pressing fully down. • When pressing the shutter button halfway, a lens operation sound may be heard.

32 Taking Pictures ( B AUTO Mode) Using Intelligent Face De tection when taking pictures Intelligent Face Det ection allows you to focus on and adjust the brightn ess of people’s faces. Intelligent Face Detection is effective with the camera held horizontally or vertically.
33 Using the Camera CAUTIO N • If the camera or subject move as the picture is taken, the subject’s face may move ou t of the Intelligent Face Detection frame. • When the camera is detecting multiple fa ces, the green frame is set around the face near the ce nter.
34 Taking Pictures ( B AUTO Mode) 1 Move the camera slightly so that one o f the subjects is in the AF frame. 2 Press the sh utter button d own halfway t o focus on the subject. 3 Continue to hold the shu tter butt on down halfway. Move the cam era back to the original image and press t he shutter button full y.

53 Advanced Features — Photography Use this mod e to shoot fireworks. It is effective for tak ing more vi vid shots of fireworks with a slo w shutter. CHECK • Flash cannot be used in the Fireworks mode. • Shutter speed setting: 1/2 sec. to 4 sec.

59 Advanced Features — Photography This m ode allo ws you to take pict ures of people at nigh t that clearly show bo th your sub jects and the night t ime backdrop. To prev ent cam era shake , always use a tripod. Using n synch ronizes R ed-eye reducti on mode.
60 d Setting th e Flash (Intelligent Fla sh) CHECK Effective flash range ( S : AUTO) Wide-angle: Approx. 60 cm to 6.5 m (2.0 ft. to 21.3 ft.) Telephoto: Approx. 60 cm to 3.5 m (2.0 ft. to 11.5 ft.) If you take pictures outside of the effective flash range, the image may appear dark even if the flash is used.

76 SHOOTING MENU Exampl e You can change the white balance for a photographed image by using colored paper instead of white paper. MEMO • In AUTO mode, the correct white balance may not be achieved for subjects such as close-ups of people’s faces and pictures taken under a special light source.

When the data includes a frame (file) with DPOF settings that were specified on another camera, “RESET DPOF OK?” appears. Pressing MENU/OK erases all of the DPOF settings already specified for each frame (file).
