51 GETTING RE ADY Formatting a Memory Card Before u sing a ne w memory card f or the first time, yo u need to format it. Once yo u forma t a memory card, yo u w ill not need to format it each ti me yo u u se it. Formatting a memory card that already has fi les on it w ill delete its conten ts.

67 SHOOTING A SNAPSHOT If the image does not focus... If the foc u s frame stays red and the op eration lamp is flashing green, it mea ns that the image is not in foc u s ( b eca u se the s ub ject is too close, etc.). Point the camera at the s ub ject and try to foc u s agai n.
68 SHOOTING A SNAPSHOT Specifying Image Size A digital camer a image is a collection of small do ts (pixels). The size of an image indicat es ho w many pixels it cont ains, and is expressed as horizonta l pixels × v ertical pixels. The initial factory def a u lt image size setti ng is 12M (4000 × 3000 pixels).
69 SHOOTING A SNAPSHOT • Selecting 3: 2 (4000 × 2656 pix els) records images w ith an aspect rati o of 3:2, w hich matches the standard aspect rat io (3:2) of pri nt paper.

W he n this happens, yo u can u se flash assist to s u pplemen t the b rightness of the s ub ject so it appears as if flash ill u min ation w as s u fficient.
