Basic components 7 EMU25850 Fuel tank cap This cap seals the fuel tank. When removed, the tank can be filled with fuel. To remove the cap, turn it counterclockw ise. EMU25860 Air ven t sc rew This screw is on the fuel tank cap. To loosen the screw, turn it counterclock w ise.
Basic components 8 EMU26201 Neutral interloc k trigger To shift out of neutral, first pull the neutral in- terlock trigger up. EMU26211 Neutral throttle lever To open the throttle without shifting into eithe r forward or reverse, pu t the remote control le - ver in the neutral position and lift the neutral throttle lever.
Basic components 9 W ARNING EWM00120 ● Attach the engine stop switch lanyard to a secure place on your clothing, or your arm or leg w hile operating. ● Do not attach the lanyard to clothing that could tear loose. Do not route the lanyard where it could become entan- gled, preventing it from functioning.
Basic components 10 EMU26151 Power tr im and tilt s witch on botto m engine cowling The power trim and tilt switch is located on the side of the bottom eng ine cowling. Pressing the switch “” (up) trims the ou t board moto r up, then tilts it up. Pressing the switch “” (down) tilts the outboard motor do w n and trims it down.
Basic components 11 EMU26340 Tilt support lever for power trim and tilt or hydro tilt model To keep the outbo ar d motor in the tilted up po - sition, lock the tilt support leve r to the clamp bracket. EMU26382 Top cowling lo ck lever (pull u p type) To remove the engine top cowling, pull up the lock lever(s) and lift off the c ow ling.
Basic components 12 EMU26491 Digital tachometer The tachometer shows the engine speed and has the following function s. NOTE: All segments of the display will light momen- tarily after the m ain switch is turned on and will return to normal thereafter.
Basic components 13 CAUTION: ECM00050 Do not continue to run the engine if the overheat warning indicator i s on. Serious engine damage will occur. EMU26600 Speedo meter (di gital type) This gauge shows the b oat speed. NOTE: After the main switch is first turned on, all seg - ments o f the disp lay come on as a test.
Basic components 14 EMU26650 Hour meter (digital type) This meter shows the nu mber of hours the en- gine has been run. It can be set to show the total number of ho ur s or the nu mber of hours for the current trip. The displa y can also be turned on and off.
Basic components 15 NOTE: ● The trip dis tance is show n in kilometers o r miles depending up on the unit of measure- ment selected for the speedom eter. ● The trip distance is kept in memory by b at- tery power. The stored data will be lost if the battery is disconnected.
Basic components 16 EMU26730 Low battery voltage warning indicator If battery voltage drops, the display will auto- matically turn on and begin to blin k. CAUTION: ECM00870 Get back to the port soon if a warning de- vice has activated. For c harging the bat- tery, consult your Selva dealer.
Basic components 17 EMU26854 Low oil pressu re warning If the oil pressure drops too low, the warning device will activ ate. Activation of warning devic e ● The engine sp eed will automatically de - crease to about 2000 r/min. ● The low oi l pressure warning indicator will light.
Operation 18 EMU26901 Installation CAUTION: ECM00110 Incorrect engine height or o bstructions to smooth water flow (such as the design or condition of the boat, or accessories such as transom ladders or depth finder tr ans- ducers) can create airborne water spray while the boat is cr uising.
Operation 19 tends to occur, thus reducing the propulsion; and if the propeller tips cut the air, the engine speed will rise ab normally and cause the en- gine to overheat. If the mounting height is too low, the water resi stance will increase and thereby reduce en gine efficiency.
Operation 20 ● Check fuel li ne connections to be s ure they are tight (if equipped Selva fuel t a nk o r boat tank). ● Be sure the fuel tank is positioned on a se- cure, flat surface, and t hat the fuel line is not twisted or flattened, or likely to contact s h a r p objects (if equipped Selva fuel tank or boat tank).
Operation 21 EMU27450 Operating engine EMU27461 Feeding fuel (portable tank ) W ARNING EWM00420 ● Before starting the engine, make sure that the boat is ti ghtly moored and t hat you can steer clear of any obstructions. Be sure there are no s wimmers in the water near you.
Operation 22 EMU27490 Starting engine EMU27624 Electric start and remote control models 1. Place the remote control lev er in “” (neutral). NOTE: The start-in-gear protection device prevents the engine from starti ng except when in neu - tral. 2. Attach the engine stop switch lanyard to a secure place on you r clothing, or your arm or leg.
Operation 23 5. Immediately after the engine starts, re - lease the main switc h to return it to “” (on). CAUTION: ECM00191 ● Never turn the main switch to “” (start) while the engine is running. ● Do not keep the starter motor turning for more than 5 seconds.
Operation 24 EMU27740 Shifting W ARNING EWM00180 Before shifting, make sure there are no swimmers or obstacles in the water near you. CAUTION: ECM00220 To change the boat direction or shifting position from forward to reverse or vice- versa, first close the throttle so that the e n- gine idles (or runs at low speeds).
Operation 25 2. After stopping the engine, disconnect the fuel line if there is a fuel joint on the out- board motor. 3. Tighten the air vent screw on the fuel tank cap (if equipped).
Operation 26 EMU27881 Adju sting t rim angl e Power trim and tilt models W ARNING EWM00750 ● Be sure all people are clear of the out- board motor when adjusting the tilt an- gle, also be careful not to pinch any body parts between the drive unit and clamp bracket.
Operation 27 Bow Up Too much trim-out puts the bow of the boat too high in the water. Performance and econ- omy are decreas ed because the hull of the boat is pushing the water and there is more air drag.
Operation 28 CAUTION: ECM00241 ● Before tilting the outboard motor, st op the engine by following the procedure on page 24. Never tilt the outboard m o- tor while the engine is running. Severe damage from overheating can result. ● Do not tilt up the engine by pushing the tiller handle (if equipped) because this could break the handle.
Operation 29 CAUTION: ECM00250 Be sure to retract the tri m rods completely during mooring. This protects the rods from marine growth and corr osion which could damage the power trim and tilt mechanism. EMU28053 Procedure for tilting down Power trim and tilt models / power tilt models 1.
Operation 30 2. Slightly tilt the outboard motor up to the desired position usi ng the power trim / tilt swi tch. 3. To return the outboard motor to the nor- mal running positio n, press the power trim / tilt sw itch and slowly tilt the out- board motor down.

Maintenance 33 EMU28301 Procedure EMU29953 Flushing with the flushing attachment 1. Wash the outboard motor body using fresh water. For further informatio n, see page 36. 2. Disconnect the fuel line from the motor or shut off the fuel cock, if equipped .
Maintenance 34 8. Drain the remained gasoline in the vapor separator with a contai ner. Loosen the drain screw, and the n remove the cap. Push in the air valve with a screwdriver to introduce air into the float chamber, so that the gasoline w ill drain smoothly.
Maintenance 35 ● Drink large quantities of water or milk followed by milk of m agnesia, beaten egg, or vegetable oil. Get immediate medical attention. Batteries also generate explosive hydr o- gen gas; therefore, you should always fol- low these preventive measures: ● Charge batteries in a well-ventilated ar- ea.
Maintenance 36 CAUTION: ECM00540 Do not leave the garden hose connector loose on the bottom cowling fitting or let the hose hang free during normal opera- tion. Water will leak out of the connector instead of cooling the engine, which can cause serious overheating.
Maintenance 37 EMU30560 Maintenance chart NOTE: ● Refer to the sections in this chapter for explanations of each owner-sp ecific action. ● The maintenance cycle on thes e charts assume usage of 200 hours per year. Main t enance frequency should be adjus ted according to usage conditions.
Maintenance 38 NOTE: When operating in sal t water, turbid or muddy water, the engine should be flushed with clean water after each use. Maintenance 40 When fitting the plug, always cle an t he gasket surface and use a new gasket. Wipe off any dirt from the threads and screw in the spark plug to the correct torque. NOTE: If a torque-wrench is not available w hen you are fitting a spark plug, a good es timate of the correct torque is 1/4 to 1/2 a turn past finger- tight.
Maintenance 41 ● If you have any question about pr oper ly doing this procedure, consult your Selva deale r . ● Do not perform this procedure on a hot or running engine. Allow the engine to cool. ● There will be f uel in the fuel filt er. Keep away from sparks, cigarettes, flames or other sources of ignition.
Maintenance 42 CAUTION: ECM00490 This procedure must be performed while the outboard motor is in the water. A flush- ing attachment or test tank can be used.
Maintenance 43 3. Put a new gas ket on the oil drain s crew . Apply a light coat of oil to the gasket and install the drain screw. NOTE: If a torque wrench is not available when you are installing the drai n screw, finger tighten the screw just until the gas ket comes into con- tact with the surface of the drain hole.
Maintenance 44 7. Dispose of used oil acc ording to local regulations. NOTE: ● For more information on the disposal of u s ed oil, con s ult your Selva d e aler. ● Change the oil mo r e often when operating the engine under adverse conditions such as extended trolling.
Maintenance 45 NOTE: C onsult your Selva deal e r if any operation is abnormal. EMU29171 Checking propeller W ARNING EWM00321 You could be seriously injured i f the en- gine accidentally starts when you are near the propeller. ● Before inspecting, removing, or install- ing the propeller, remove the spark plug caps from the spark plugs.
Maintenance 46 EMU30660 Removing the propeller EMU29194 Spline models 1. Straighten the cotter pin and pull it out us- ing a pair of pliers. 2. Remove the propeller nut, washer, and spacer (if equipped).
Maintenance 47 EMU29281 Changing gear oil W ARNING EWM00800 ● Be sure the outboard motor is se curely fastened to the transom or a stable stand. You could be severely injured if the outboard motor falls on you. ● Never get under the lower unit while it is tilted, even when the tilt support lever or knob is locked.
Maintenance 48 EMU29302 Cleaning fuel tank W ARNING EWM00920 Gasoline is highly flammable, and its va- pors are flammable and explosive. ● If you have any question about pr oper ly doing this procedure, consult your Selva deale r . ● Keep away from s par ks, cigarettes, flames, or other sources of ignition when cleaning the fuel tank.
Maintenance 49 EMU29320 Chec king batt ery (for electri c star t models) W ARNING EWM00330 Battery electrolytic fluid is dangerous; it contains sulfuric acid and therefore is poi- sonous and highly caustic.
Maintenance 50 NOTE: C onsult a Selva dea l er w hen charg i ng o r re-charging batteries. EMU29331 Connecting the battery W ARNING EWM00570 Mount the battery holder securely in a dry, well-ventilated, vibration-free location in the boat. Install a fully charged battery in the holder.

Trouble Recovery 56 EMU29520 Power trim and tilt wil l not operate If the engine c annot be tilted up or down w ith the power trim and tilt/ the pow er tilt because of a discharged battery or a failure with the power trim and tilt unit/the power tilt, the en- gine can be tilted manually .
Trouble Recovery 57 ● Avoid accidentally pulling the lanyard during normal operation. Loss of engine power means the loss of most steering control. Also, without engine power, the boat could slow rapidly. This could cause people and objects in the boat to be thrown forward.
Trouble Recovery 58 EMU29760 Treatment of submerged motor If the outboard motor is submerged, i mmedi- ately take it to a Selva dealer. Other w ise some corrosion may begin almost immedia t e- ly. If you cannot immediately take the outboard mot o r to a Selva d e aler, follow the proc e - dure below in order to m inimize engine dam - age.
