Setting Up 22 Installing the Toner Cartridge The following proc edure describes how to install the toner cartridge. ❒ Do not expose t he toner cartrid ge to a li ght for a long time. If you do, the toner will be damaged and t he printing quality might b e reduced.
Setting Up 23 ❒ The toner cartridges that comes with th e printer will allow you to print up to about 3,000 pages. These numbers were obtained from printing A4 K 5% charts, bu t the actual number of page s will vary depen ding on the paper ty pe, size, contents, and settings.
Setting Up 24 ❒ Do not hold the toner cartridge up side down or stand it verti cally. ❒ Do not put th e toner cartridge on an unstable or t ilted surface. D Place the toner cartridge on a flat surf ace. Pull out the tape inside the unit horizontally while holding the ca rtridge with one hand as shown in the illustration.
Setting Up 25 F Insert the toner cartridge in its appropriate position by gently pushing down. G Close the front cover by pressing th e indentations on the left and right sides. ❒ Do not close the front cover w ith force. If you cannot clos e the cover easily, pull out the toner cartridg e from the printer and inse rt it again.
Setting Up 26 Loading Paper The following describes how to load paper into the standard pape r tray (Tray 1). ❒ To avoid paper jam s, make sure paper is n ot stacked above the limit mark in- side the tray. Misfeeds might occur. ❒ Do not mix different t ypes of paper in a single pa per tray.
Setting Up 27 C Load the new paper into pape r tray with print side up. ❒ Confirm that the top of the stack is no t higher th an the li mit mark inside t he tray.
Setting Up 28 D Carefully sli de the paper tray in to the printer until it stops. ❒ Confirm that the setting of the pape r size dial matche s the sizes and feed direction of the paper in the tray. Oth erwise, the printer might be dama ged or a printin g problem mi ght occur.
Setting Up 29 Turning the Power On Follow the procedur e below to turn the power on. A Make sure the power is set to “ b ” Off. B Plug in the power cable. ❒ Make sure the power cable is plugged securely into the wall outlet. ❒ Turn the power off when pl ugging and unpl ugging the power plug .

By installing options, you can impr ove the printer performance and have an ex- panded variety of features to use. For the specifications of each option, see Maintenance Guide.
Installing Options 35 • 802.11b Interface Unit Type F • Bluetooth I nterface Unit Type C E Install the hard disk drive (Hard Disk Drive Type 2600). Install the ha rd disk drive to the controller boa rd. F Install the Network Data Protection Unit Type B.
Installing Options 36 ❒ The envelope feeder is a tray th at slides into the optional paper feed un it. Without the optional paper feed unit, the envelope feeder cannot be u sed. ❒ Your printer can accommod ate two optio nal p aper feed units. The enve lope Feed- er unit can be used in “Tray 2”.

Installing Options 38 Attaching Paper Feed Unit Type 610 When installing multiple opti ons, install the paper feed unit first. ❒ Do not slide more than one pa per tray out at the same time. Hav ing more than one full paper t ray fully exte nded could cause the machine to topple.
Installing Options 39 ❒ If you attach two paper fe ed units at the same time, stac k them up in ad- vance. D There are three pins on the top of th e paper feed unit that point straight up. On the bottom of the printer th ere ar e three holes. Align the holes over the pins, and then lower the printer gently onto the paper feed unit.

Installing Options 41 Attaching Envelope Feeder Type 610 ❒ This unit is a tray that slides into th e optional paper feed unit. Without the op- tional paper feed unit, this envelop e feeder cann ot be used. ❒ Your printe r can accommodate two o ptional paper fe ed units.
Installing Options 42 ❒ The envelope fee der must be used in the top-most optional p aper feed unit (Tray 2). ❒ The tray of the top-most o ptional paper feed u nit is beneath the paper tray. ❒ Keep the paper tray with pa per in a cool dark pl ace.
Installing Options 43 Attaching Memory Unit Type C 256MB (SDRAM Module) ❒ Before touching the memory unit, to uch something metal to discharge any static electricity. Static electricity can damage the me mory unit. ❒ Do not subject th e memory unit to physical shocks.
Installing Options 44 ❒ The removed screws are requ ired in fastening the con troller board. D Pull out the handle of the controller board. E Pull the handle, and then slide the controller board out. F Place the controlle r board on a fl at surface.

Press down the levers on both sides to remove the default memory unit. I Align the notch of the me mory unit to the slot, and then push it down un- til it cl icks.
Installing Options 46 J Match the controller board to the top and bottom rail using the “ T ” mark, and then slide it into the printer slowly until it stops. K Push the handle of the contro ller board until it clicks. L Fasten the controller board to the printer with the two screws.
Installing Options 47 M Align the power cable to the left side groove of the duplex unit, and then slide the duplex unit in until it is connected to the printer. If the duplex unit is not attac hed, this step is not necessar y. ❒ Be sure to return the provided screwdrive r to its original position on the in- side of the front cover.
Installing Options 48 Attaching 1394 Interface Unit Type 4510 ❒ The 1394 interf ace unit uses “IP over 1394” and “SCSI print ”. Operating sys- tem-compatible connection m ethods are as follows (IEEE 1394 cannot be used with Wind ows 95/98 and Windows NT 4.

O Attach the antenna cap to the card with the side that has both corners of the antenna cap cut out facing the screws. P Align the power cable to the left side groove of the duplex unit, and then slide the duplex unit in until it is connected to the printer.

Installing Options 72 Attaching Duplex Unit AD610 ❒ If you attach the du plex unit and the p aper feed unit, t he paper feed unit must be attached prior to attachin g the duplex unit.
Installing Options 73 D Open the rear cover by pushing the two knobs as shown in the illustra- tion. E Remove the rear cover in the horizontal direction. ❒ The rear cover of t he printer is not used w hen attachin g the duplex unit. ❒ Store the remove d rear cove r for possible future use.

Prepare th e hub and oth er network de vices before conne cting the 10 BASE-T or 100 BASE-TX cable to the machine's Ethernet port.
