v Energy Star Program ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ Low-power mode (Energy Saver mode) This printer a utomatically lowers its p ower consumption 60 minutes after the last operation has been completed when the Energy Level is set to level 1. To exit Low-power (Energy Saver) mode, press any key on the operation panel.
vi Color Guide Color Pr in ting Basi cs Additi ve (E mitted ) and S ubtra ctive ( Reflec ted) C olor Mo dels All light is a mixture of red, green, and blue, wh ich is normally called the RGB model. When red, green, and blue are of equ al intensities, the RGB color model produce s white.
vii Note ❒ CMY is also called subtractive or reflective color. Your printer uses CMY ton- er plus K (black) toner (CMYK color model) to provide full color printing. The colors of the RGB color model can be mixed to produce the cyan, magenta, and yellow of the CMY co lor model and vice versa.
viii Printed Color Your printer produces full-color output using four toner c olors: cyan, magenta, yellow, and black. These four c olors make up the CMYK color model.
ix Example of Colo r Adj ustments U sin g the Prin ter Driver The following provides a number of examples to show you what happens when you change the various color se ttings provided in the printer driver. Resol ution Resolution is the number of dots the printer can print within one inc h.
x Edge Smoothing Edge Smoot hing is a technique used for improving the print quality of text and graphics. Inden tations in cur ved lines are automatically smoothed to produce a clearer appea rance. Limita tion ❒ Printing photographs or images containing gradations may result in a change in image quality with Edge Smoothing on.
xi Toner Saving Turning on Toner Saving reduces the amount of toner used for printing. This set- ting does not help to improve printout quality, but instead is used when printin g preliminary drafts of a docum ent. Limita tion ❒ Turning on the Toner Saving can cause output to become blur red and resul t in very thin lines not printin g at all.
xii Imag e P ri nt in g This setting lets you select the resolution for printing of image data. ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ Standard All image data with a resolution greater than 300 dpi is printed at 300 dpi. ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ Fast All image data with a resolution greater than 150 dpi is pr inted at 150 dpi.
xiii Color Adjus tments Using t he Pri nter Drive r The following provides a number of examples to show you what happens when you change the variou s color settings provide d in the printer driver. The colors produced by the printer do not exactl y match those you see on your monitor.
xiv ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ Photographic This setting enhances midtone colors similar to those seen in photographs. Color Level Use to set the number of colors used per dot.
xv Brightness This setting controls the overal l brightness of the image. Moving the slider to the plus (+) side increas es brightness , while moving it to the minus (-) side decreases brightness. Contrast This setting controls the r ange between the darkest and lightes t shade of an im- age.
xvi Color Balance These s ettings let you control the relative inten sity of the individual c olors of the additive color model (red, green, blue ). Note ❒ The position of the color bar als o affects the complementary color relation- ship.

9 2. Installing Options R CAUTION: R CAUTION: • Make sure to turn off the printer and wait for about 30 minutes before in- stalling options. Not waiting for the printer to cool down can result in a burn. • It is recommended that at least two persons are used to lift the machine.

Paper and Other Media 46 5 ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ Thick Paper • If you print on paper heavier than 105 g/m 2 (28 lb), use the bypass tra y. The bypass tray can hold paper up to 157 g/m 2 (42 lb) in weight. The print quality on paper that is thicker cannot be guara nteed.

Paper and Other Media 48 5 • Paper that has already been printed on (with the exception of preprinted let- terhead) Note ❒ The ink for the format printing by a copier, or an inkjet p rinter and so on might do harm to the fusing unit of this pri nter due to a difference in fu sing temperatures.

Troubleshooting Error & Status Messages There are three types of error messages: • Printed error message • Displayed error message • Getting Printer Information over the Network Printed Er ror Message The error message s hown below is output by the printer whenever there is not enough mem ory to print you r data.

Error & Status Messages 57 6 Paper Si ze Error There is a d ifference be- tween the paper size in the tray and th e requested pa- per size fro m the computer. After co nfirming that the size, feed direction o f paper and the pa per size dial in the tray are set co rrectly, open and cl ose the front cover.
Troubleshooting 58 6 Warm ing Up The printe r is prepa ring for print ing. Wait until the pr inter is warmed u p. The print er adjust s itse lf regu larly to main tain pr int quality. (This message might app ear while p rint- ing. ) It is not a n erro r messag e.
