7 PREPARATION CONNECTING P OWER Using Batte ries You can power your reco rder with two AA batteries (not supplied). For t he best per- formanc e and lon gest life, we rec ommend Radio Shack alk aline batteries . W arning: Disp ose of old batteries prompt- ly; do n ot b ur y or burn them.
8 1. Slide the battery compar tment c ov er in the direc tion of th e arrow . 2. Insert the batteries into the compart- ment and on to p of t he at tach ed r ib- bon, as indic ated by the po lar ity symbo ls (+ and –) marked inside. 3. R eplac e th e cover .

Cautions: You must use a Clas s 2 power s ource that supp lies 3V volts D C and del ivers at least 300 mA.
10 Follow these s teps to po wer the Micro-4 1 from sta ndard AC power. 1. Set the A C adapter' s v oltage s witch to 3V . 2. I nser t the 3. 4 mm o uter diam eter /1.3 mm in ner diam eter barrel plu g into the A C adapter's cord to read TIP+ .
11 Cautions : You m ust us e a p ower so urce that supp lies 3 vol ts DC an d delivers at least 300 mA. Its center t ip must be set to posit ive and its plug m ust fit the Micro -41's DC 3V jack. The reco mmended a dapter meets thes e specificat ions.
12 1. Set the D C adapte r's v oltage s witch to 3V . 2. Attach t he 3.4 mm out er diame ter/1.3 mm inne r diamete r barre l plu g with the tip set to positiv e (+). 3. Insert the barrel plug into the Mic ro- 41's DC 3V jac k. This discon nects an y internal batteries.
13 Insert the earphone's plu g into the re cord- er' s EAR jack . The internal sp eaker auto- matica lly disconnec ts. Listening Saf ely To pr otect yo ur hearing , follow thes e guideli nes when you use an e arphone. • Set the volume t o the low est setting bef ore y ou begin listeni ng.
14 • Once you set the v olume, do not increas e it. Over time, y our ears adapt to th e volume l ev el, so a volum e level that does not cause disco m f or t might still d amage you r hearing. T raffic S afety • Do no t wea r an ea r phone wh ile oper- atin g a motor v ehicle or riding a bic y - cle .
15 CONNECTING AN EXTERNAL MICROPHONE You can us e an op tional micro ph one with a 1 / 8 -inch (3.5mm) pl ug to extend the re cord- ing range . Your local Radi oShack sto re carries a wide s electio n of micropho nes. Insert the microphone ’s plug into the re- corder ’s MI C jack.
16 OPERATIO N LOADING A MICROCASSETTE T APE Note: We recom mend MC -60 micro c as- sette ta pes for up to 2 h ours of reco rding/ playba ck time, or MC-90 m icrocassett e tapes f or up to 3 hours of recording/p lay- back tim e.
17 3. Insert the mi crocassette into the door's guides with the tape’ s open edge f acing out and the full re el posi- tioned t oward t he top of the re corder . 4. Close the door . RECORDING Cautions: • Do not c hange the tap e speed while recordin g.
18 V oice Activ ated (V O X) Recor ding Follow these s teps to ha ve the recorder start and stop recordin g automaticall y based on soun d it de tect s. 1. Set VOX to ON . 2. Load a t ape. 3. Set T APE SPEED on the side of the recorder as f ollo ws : • T o doub le the tape’ s recording/pl a y- bac k time, set TA P E SPEE D to 1.
19 • F or better sound quality , set TA P E SPEED to 2.4 . This setting allo ws 60 minu tes of total reco rding/pla yback time on an M C-60 tape, or 90 mi n- utes on an MC-90 tape . 4. Press RE C to beg in recordin g. Both REC and PL A Y loc k down, an d the RECORD/B A TTER Y indicator (to the right of the ta pe counter ) ligh ts.
20 5. Record ing stops w hen the tape reaches the end of the casse tte. T o stop i t so on er , press STOP/EJECT . Manual Rec ordi ng 1. Set VOX to OFF . 2. Load a t ape. 3. Set T AP E SPEED to 1.2 to doub le the recordin g time, or to 2.4 f or better sound q uality .

23 Rewindi ng/Fast-Forwar ding Slide REW/REVIEW F AST -F/CUE to REW/RE- VIEW to rapidly re wind a tape , or to FA S T - F / CUE to fast-forward a tape. Caution: To prot ect the tape-h andling part s, pres s STOP/EJECT or slide REW/RE- VIEW F AST -F/CUE t o the ce nter when the tape reac hes the end .
24 QUICK RE VIEW During rec ording, slide REW/REVIEW FA S T - F/CUE to REW/REVIEW to hear a porti on of what y ou have just recorded without first press ing STOP/EJEC T then PLA Y . Pre ss REC to resume recording . USING THE T APE COUNTER You can use the tape c ounter to note differ- ent loc ations on your tap e during recordin g or pl ayback.
25 USING INDEX M ARKER Follow these steps to use INDEX MARKER to add a special tone to a tape s o you ca n quic k ly fi nd that poin t usin g the re vi ew c on - trols. 1. T o ma rk the beginn ing of a recorde d sectio n, press and hold do wn INDEX MARKER, o n the bac k of the reco rder , f or at least 3 seconds during record- ing.
26 T A PE TIPS STORING CASSETTE T APES Do not expos e microcass ette tapes to hig h tempera t ures , hi gh hu mi dit y, du st or di rt, or motor s, tr ansfo rmers, or oth er sourc es of stro ng magn etic field s. PREVENTING ACCIDENTAL ERASURE Microcassette tape s have two erase- protection tabs — o ne for each side.
27 If you lat er de cid e to re cord on a ta pe side after y ou have remov ed the erase -protec- tion tab , place a piece of st rong plastic tape ov er that side’ s erase -protect ion hole. Be sur e you cover only th e hole orig- inally cove re d by the er ase - prot ect io n tab.
