10 En About Home Theater Y ou can use tw o sets of speakers with the A V receiv er: Speakers A and Speak ers B . Speakers A should be used in your main listeni ng room for up to 5.1-channel playback. * While Speakers B is on, Speakers A is reduced to 2.
11 En Connecting the A V Receiver Speaker Configura tion The follo wing table indicates the channels you should use depending on the number of speakers that you ha ve. For 5.1-channel surround-sound playback, you need fi ve speakers and a po wered subwoofer .
12 En Connecting the Speak er Cables Screw-type speak er terminals Using Banana Plugs (North American models) • If you are using b anana plugs, tighten th e speaker terminal before inserting th e banana plug. • Do not insert the speaker code directly in to the center hole of the speaker terminal.
13 En Connected ima ge with A V components • Before making an y A V con nections, read th e manuals supplied with your A V components. • Don’t connect the po wer cord until you’ ve comp leted and double-checke d all A V con nections.
14 En Connect your components to the appropriate jack s. The default input assi gnments are sho wn belo w . ✔ : Assignment can be changed ( ➔ 29 ). Refer to “ About HDMI” ( ➔ 49 ) and “Using an RIHD-comp atible TV , Player, or Recorder” ( ➔ 50 ).

16 En W ith u (Remote Interacti ve), you can use the follo wing special functions: ■ System On/A uto P ower On When you start playback on a component connected via u , if the A V receiv er is on Standby , it will automati- cally turn on and select th at component as the input source.
17 En The A V recei ver supports se veral conn ection formats for comp atibi lity with a wide range of A V equipment. The format you choose will depend on the formats supported by your components.
18 En T urning On/Off the A V Receiver T urning On Press ON/ST ANDBY on the fr ont panel. or Press RECEIVER followed by ON/ST ANDBY on the remote co ntroller . The A V rece iv er come s on, the display lights, and the ST ANDBY indicator goes of f. T urning Off Press ON/ST ANDBY on the fr ont panel or the remot e controller .

20 En Y ou can temporarily mute the output of the A V receiv er. Tip • T o un mute, press MUTING again or adjust the volume. • The Mute functi on is cancelled when the A V recei ver is set to Standb y . W ith the sleep timer , you can set the A V receiv er to turn of f automatically after a specif ied period.
21 En Listening to the Radio W ith the built-in tuner you can enjoy AM and FM radio stations. Y ou can store your fa vo rite stations as presets for quick selection. Listenin g to the Radio T uning into Radio Stations ■ A uto tuning mode When tuned into a station, the TU NED indicator lights.
22 En Y ou can store a combination of up to 40 of your fav orite FM/AM radio stations as presets. Selecting Presets Tip • Y ou can also use the remote c ontroller’ s number buttons to select a preset directly . Deleting Pre sets When tuned into an RDS station, the RDS indicator lights.
23 En Finding Statio ns by T ype (PTY) Y ou can search for radio stations by type. Listening to T raffic News (TP) Y ou can search for stations that broadcast traf fic ne ws. ■ RDS program types (PTY) 1 Pre ss RT/PTY/TP twice. The current program type appears on the display .
24 En Recor ding This section explains ho w to record the selected input source to a component with recording capability , and how to record audio and video from different sou rces. Connecting a Recor ding Component Note • The A V receiv er must be t urned on for recording.

26 En ■ Speaker Lay out The illustration sho ws which speakers are acti v ated in each channel. See “Sp Config (Speaker Conf iguration)” for the speaker setup ( ➔ 30 ). 27 En Onky o-Origina l DSP Listening Modes Note *1 For the Blu-ray Discs, Dolby Digital is used. *2 A V receiver can input the DSD signal from HDMI IN . Setting the output setting on the player side to PCM might obtain a better sound according to the player .
28 En Ad vanced Setup Note The on-screen setup menus are displayed when: • There is no video in put, or • The video input is 480p, 576p, 720p, 1080i, or 1080p. The on-screen setup menus appear on the connected TV and provide a con venient w ay to change the A V receiv er’ s va rious settings.
29 En Explanatory Notes Menu HDMI Input If you connect a video component to an HDMI input, you must assign that input to an i nput selector . F or example, if you connect your Blu-ra y Disc/D VD player to HDMI IN 2 , you must assign “ HDMI2 ” to the “ BD/D VD ” input selector .
30 En Note • When an HDMI IN is assigned to an input select or in “HDMI Input” ( ➔ 29 ), this input assignment is automatically set to the same HDMI IN . And in addition to th e usual inputs (e.g., CO AX , etc.), you can also select HDMI inputs.
31 En ■ Left, Center, Righ t, Surround Right, Surround Left, Subwoofer ` Specify the distance from the each speaker to your lis- tening position. Note • The speaker distance setting cannot be changed whil e a pair of headphones is connected, or “ Au d i o T V O U T ” setting is set to “ On ” ( ➔ 32 ) or Speakers B is on.
32 En DTS Setting Neo:6 Music ■ Center Image ` 0 to 2 to 5 W ith this setting, you can specify b y how much the front left and right chann el output is attenuated in order to create the center channel. Setting a v alue “0” in the middl e is set to hear a sound.
33 En Note •I f “ On ” is selected and the signal can be output by the TV , the A V re ceiv er will output no sound through its speakers. •I f “ On ” is selected, “ TV Sp On ” appears on the display by pressing DISPLA Y . •W h e n “ TV Control ” is set to “ On ” , this setting is fix ed to “ Au t o ” .
34 En Note • Do not assign the co mponent connected with the HDMI input to the TV/CD selector when you set “ TV Control ” setting to “ On ”. Otherwise, appropriate CE C (Consumer Electronics Con- trol) operation is not guar anteed.
35 En Music Opti miz er The Music Optimizer function enhances the sound quality of compressed music files. Use it with music files that use “lossy” compression, su ch as MP3. ■ M.Optimizer ` Off : Music Optim izer off. ` On : Music Op timizer on.
36 En The digital input signal format s are av ailable only for the input sources that you ha ve assigned a digital input jack ( ➔ 29 ). Normally , the A V receiv er de tect s the signal form at auto- matically .
37 En Contr olling iP od Models sold are dif ferent depending on the re gion. Connecting an Onky o Doc k C B A *1 No. Onkyo Dock Cable Note Pa ge A UP-A1 Dock (Universal Port Option Dock) — • When UP-A1 Dock th at seated iPod is connected, the powe r consumption on standby mode slightly increases.
38 En UP-A1 Dock W ith the UP-A1 Dock, you can easily play the mu sic, photo, or movie stored on your Apple iPod through the A V receiv er and enjoy great sound.
39 En Note • Enter the appropriate remote co ntrol code be fore using the A V receiv er’ s remote controller for the first time ( ➔ 41 ). • Connect the RI D ock to the A V r eceiv er with an u cable ( ➔ 37 ). • Set the RI Doc k’ s RI MODE switch to “ HDD ” or “ HDD/ DOCK ”.
40 En ✔ : A vailable b uttons Note • With some iPod models and generations, ce rtain buttons may not work as expected. • For detailed operation of the iPod, pl ease refer to the instruction manual. *1 This button does not turn the Onkyo DS-A2 or DS-A2X RI Dock on or off.
41 En Contr olling Other Components Y ou can use the A V receiv er’ s remote controller (RC-762M) to control your ot her A V components. This section explains ho w to ente r the remote control code (with the default underlined ) for a component that you want to control: D VD, TV , CD, etc.
42 En If you want to control an Onkyo component b y pointing the remote controller dire ctly at it, use the follo wing remote control codes: ` 32900 : Onkyo Blu-ray Disc player ` 32901 : Onkyo HD-D VD.
43 En Note • With some components, certain butto ns may not work as expected, and some may not work at all. ✔ : A vailable b uttons *1 The p function is not supp orted. The p sup- ported by the A V r eceiv er is the CEC system control function of the HDMI standard.

49 En About HDMI Designed to meet the increased demands of digital TV , HDMI (High Definition Mult imedia Interf ace) is a ne w digital interface standard for connect ing TVs, projectors, Blu-ray Disc/D VD play ers, set-top boxes, and other video compo- nents.
50 En Using an RIHD-compatible TV , Play er , or Recor der p , which stands for Remote Interacti ve o ver HDMI, is the name of the system control function found on Onkyo components. The A V receiver can be us ed with CEC (Consumer Electronics Cont rol), which allows system control ov er HDMI and is part of the HDMI standard.
