12 En About Home Theater Thanks to the A V receiv er’ s superb capabilities, you can enjoy surround sound wi th a real sense of movement in your ow n home—just lik e being in a movie theater or concert hall. W ith Blu-ra y Discs or DVDs, you can enjoy DTS and Dolby Digital.
13 En Connections Connecting the A V Receiver Speaker Configura tion The follo wing table indicates the channels you should use depending on the number of speakers that you ha ve. For 7.1-channel surround-s ound playback, you need 7 speakers and a po wered subwoofer .
14 En Connecting the Speaker Cab les Screw-type speak e r terminals Using Banana Plugs • If you are using banana plugs, tighten the speaker terminal before inserting the banana plug. • Do not insert the speaker code directly in to the center hole of the speaker terminal.
15 En Using Dipole Spea kers Y ou can use dipole speakers for the sur round and surround back speakers. Dipole speakers output the same sound in tw o directions. Dipole speakers typically ha ve an arro w printed on them to indicate how the y should be positioned.
16 En Bi-amping the Fr ont Speaker s The FRO NT L/R and SURR B A CK L/R terminal posts can be used with front speakers and surround back speakers respec- ti vely , or bi-amped t o pro vide separate tweeter and w oofer feeds for a pair of front speakers th at support bi-amping, pro viding improv ed bass and treble performance.
17 En Connected ima ge with A V components • Before making any A V connections, read th e manuals supplied with your A V components. • Don’t connect the po wer cord until you’ ve comp leted and double-check ed all A V connections. • Push plugs in all the way to make good connecti ons (loose connecti ons can cause noise or malfunc- tions).
18 En Connect your components to the appropriate jack s. The default input assi gnments are sho wn below . ✔ : Assignment can be changed ( ➔ 42 ). Refer to “ About HDMI” ( ➔ 88 ) and “Using an RIHD-comp atible TV , Player, or Record er” ( ➔ 89 ).
19 En Connect your components to the appropriate jacks. The default input assignments are sho wn below . ✔ : Assignment can be changed ( ➔ 43 ). Connecting Y our Components The on-screen setup menus appear only on a TV th at is co nn ec te d t o th e HDMI OUT .
20 En Note *1 Connect a turntable (MM) that has built-in a phono preamp to TV/CD IN or connect it to PHONO IN with the phono preamp turned off . If your tu rntabl e (MM ) doesn’ t hav e a phono pream p, connect to PHONO IN .
21 En This section explains ho w to connect the supplied indoor FM antenna and AM loop antenna. The A V receiv er won’t pick up an y radi o signals without any antenn a connected, so you must co nnect the antenna to use the tuner .
22 En The A V recei ver supports se vera l connection formats for compat ibility with a wide range of A V equipment. The format you choose will depend on the formats supported by your co mponents.
23 En A udio Connection Formats Audio component can be co nnected by using any of the follo wing audio connection form ats: analog, optical, coax- ial, analog multichannel, or HDMI. When choosing a connection form at, bear in mind that the A V receiv er does not con vert digital input signals for ana- log line outputs and vice versa.
24 En T ur ning On & Basic Operations T urning On/Off the A V Receiver T urning On Press ON/ST ANDBY on the fr ont panel. or Press RECEIVER followed by ON on the r e mote contr oller . The A V rece iv er comes on, the display lights, and the ST ANDBY indicator goes of f.
25 En Basic Operations Y ou can determine the language used for the onscreen setup menus. See “Lang uage” in the “OSD Setup” ( ➔ 53 ). ■ Operating on the A V receiver ■ Operating with the remo te controller Y ou can display v arious info rmation about the current input source as follows.
26 En Y ou can temporarily mute the output of the A V receiv er. Tip • T o unmute, press MUTING again or adjust the volume. • The Mute function is ca ncelled when the A V receiv er is set to Standb y . W ith the sleep timer , you can set the A V recei ver to turn off aut omatically after a specif ied period.
27 En Note *1 If Pure Audio or Direct listening mode is s elected, “ Dynamic EQ ” and “ Dynamic V olume ” cannot be selected. *2 Only when you have selected “ Custom ” in the “ Picture M.
28 En Using the Easy macro command in the Easy macro mode, you can sequentially operate Onkyo components with sim- ple commands by simply pre ssing one b utton. The default actions are described belo w . Press A CTIVITIES to start the Easy macro comm and.
29 En W ith the supplied calibrated microphone, Audyssey MultEQ automatically determines the numbe r of speakers connected, thei r si ze for purposes of bass man- agement, optimum crossover frequencies to the subw oofer (if present), and distances fro m the prim ary li stening posi- tion.
30 En Note • When Audysse y MultEQ Room Correction and Speaker Setup is complete, the “ Equalizer ” will be set to “ A udyssey ” ( ➔ 46 ). The A udyssey indicator will light ( ➔ 9 ). • Y ou can cancel Audyss ey MultEQ Room Corre ction and Speaker Setup at an y point in this procedure simply by discon- necting the setup microphone.
31 En Error Me ssages While Audyssey MultEQ ® Room Correction and Speaker Setup is in progress, one of the error messages belo w may appear . The options are: ` Retry : T ry again. ` Cancel : Cancel Audyssey MultEQ Room Correction and Speaker Setup. • Ambient noise is too high.
32 En Listening to the Radio W ith the built-in tuner you can enjoy AM and FM radio stations. Y ou can store your fa v o rite stations as pr esets for quick selection.
33 En Y ou can store a combination of up to 40 of your fav orite FM/AM radio stations as presets. Note • Y ou can name your radio presets for easy identification ( ➔ 50 ).

40 En Onky o-Original DSP List ening Modes Note *1 Based on the audio channels contained in the source, the corresponding speake rs will output the sound. *2 If there are no surr ound back speakers, or Powered Zone 2 is being used, Dolb y Pro Logic II is used.
41 En Advanced Operations Ad vanced Setup The on-screen setup menus a ppear on the connected TV and provide a con venient way to change the A V rece iv er’ s various settin gs. Settings are organized into 9 cate gories on the main menu . Carry out the settings by using the on-screen display .
42 En Explanatory No tes Main Menu Input/Output Assig n Monitor Out Y ou can specify the output resolution for the HDMI O UT and COMPONENT VIDEO MONIT OR OUT and have the A V receiv er upconv ert th e picture resolution as neces- sary to match the resolution supported by your TV .
43 En Note • If no video component is connected to HDMI OUT (even if the HDMI input is assigned), the A V receiv er selects the vide o source based on the setting of “ Component V ideo Input ”.
44 En Main menu Speaker Setup Here you can check the settings made by Audyssey MultEQ Room Correction and Speaker Setup function, or set them manuall y , which is useful if you change one of the co nnected speakers after using Audyssey MultEQ Room Correction and Speaker Setup function.
45 En ■ Surr Back Ch ` 1ch : Select if only one surr ound back speaker is con- nected. ` 2ch : Select if two (left and ri ght) surround back speakers are connected. Note •I f t h e “ Surr Back ” setting is set to “ None ” ( ➔ 44 ), this setting cannot be selected.
46 En Equalizer Settings W ith the Equalizer setting s, you can adj ust the to ne of speakers indi vidually with a 7-band equalizer . The volume of each speaker ca n be set ( ➔ 45 ). ■ Equalizer ` Manual : Y ou can adjust the equalizer for each spe aker manu- ally .
47 En ■ Preserve THX Settings ` Ye s : Audyssey Dy namic EQ ® / Audyssey Dy namic V olume ® will not be activ e in THX listening mode. ` No : Audyssey Dy namic EQ/ Audyssey Dynamic V olume will be acti ve in THX listening mode de pending on the setting.
48 En ■ PLIIz Height Gain The Height Gain Control in Dolby Pro Logic IIz enables the listener to se le ct how much gain is appli ed to the front high speakers. There are three settings, “ Low ”, “ Mid ” and “ High ”, and the front high speakers are accentua ted in th at order .
49 En W ith Audysse y Dynamic EQ ® , you can enjoy great sound ev en when listening at low v olume lev els. Audyssey Dynamic EQ solves the problem of deterio- rating sound quality as volume is decreased b y taking into account human percepti on and room acoustics.
50 En IntelliV olume ■ IntelliV olume ` –12dB to 0dB to +12dB in 1 dB steps. W ith IntelliV olume, you can se t the input level for each input selector individ ually . Th is is useful if one of your source components is louder or quieter than the others.
51 En Note • T o name a radio preset, use TUNER to select AM or FM, and then select the preset ( ➔ 33 ). •“ Name Edit ” is not operable when the input selector is set to “ NET/US B ”. T o restore a cust om nam e to the default, erase the cust om name b y entering an empty white space for each lette r .
52 En ■ Edge Enhancement *2 ` 0 to +10 W ith this setting you can adjust the sharpness of edges in the picture. “ 0 ” is the softest. “ +10 ” is the sharpest. ■ Noise Reduction *2 ` Off : Noise reduction of f. ` Low : Low noise r eduction.
53 En ■ DTS/DTS-ES/DTS-HD W ith this setting, you can specify the listen ing mode to be used when a DTS or DTS-HD High Resolution Audio format digital audio signal is played (D VD, LD, CD, etc.). Speci f ies the default liste ning mode for DTS- HD Master Audio sources, su ch as Blu-ray or HD DVD (input via HDMI).
54 En HDMI ■ A udio TV Out ` Off : The audio is no t output from the HDMI output. ` On : The audio is output from the HDMI output. This preference determines whether the incoming audio signal is output from the HDMI OUT .
55 En ■ Po w e r C o n t ro l ` Off : Power Control disabled. ` On : Power Control enabled. T o link the power fu nctions of p -compatible c om- ponents connected via HDMI, select “ On ”. This setting is set to “ On ” au tomatically when th e “ HDMI Control (RIHD) ” is set to “ On ” f irst time.
56 En W ith this preferen ce , you ca n protect your settings b y locking the setup menus. Main menu Loc k Setup ■ Setup ` Locked : Setup menus locked. ` Unlocked : Setup menus not locked. When the setup menus are lock ed, you cannot change an y setting.
57 En Speaker Levels Y ou can adjust the v olume of ea ch speak er while listenin g to an input source. These temporary adj ustments are cancelled when t he A V receiv er is set to Standby . T o sa ve the setting you made here, go to “Le vel Calibrat ion” ( ➔ 45 ) before setting the A V receiver to Standby .
58 En A udio Selector Y ou can set priorities of audio output when there are both digital and analog inputs. ■ A udio Selector ` ARC : The audio signal from your TV tuner can be sent to the HDMI OUT of the A V rece iv er. *1 W ith this select ion the TV’ s audio can be automati- cally selected as a priori ty among other assignments.
59 En NET/USB The A V recei ver is network-r eady , which means you can hook it up to your home network with a standard Ethernet cable and enjoy the music f iles stored on your compu ter or media server . If your network is connected to the Internet, you can also enjoy Internet radio.
60 En T o receiv e Internet radio, you must connect the A V receiv er to a network with Internet access ( ➔ 59 ). Y ou can select Internet radio stations b y connecting to the A V recei ver from your computer and selecting stations in your W eb browser .
61 En Registering Pres ets *1 Once you’ ve added a station to the list, simply select it on the Internet Radio screen, and then press ENTER to start playback. *1 From the search results you can pres et the stations and songs but cannot listen to them directly .
62 En Random Playback The Random function can only be set while the PLA Y screen is displayed. T o play songs in random order , during p layback (or while playback is paused or stopped), press RANDOM . All of the songs in the current fold er will be played in random order .

66 En ■ Gatewa y If you set the “ DHCP ” setting to “ Disable ”, you must specify a gatew ay address. Enter the gate way address provided by your ISP . ■ DNS Server If you set the “ DHCP ” setting to “ Disable ”, you must specify a DNS server .
67 En Random Playback The Random function can only be set while the PLA Y screen is displayed. T o play songs in random order , while the list of songs is displayed, press RANDOM . All of the songs in the cur- rent folder will be played in random order .
68 En Zone 2 In addition to your main listening room, you can also enjoy pl ayback in the other room, or as we call Multi Zone. And, you can select a different source for each room. There are two w ays you can connect Zone 2 speake rs: 1. Connect them directly to the A V receiv er.
69 En If you’ ve connected your Zone 2 speakers to the A V receiv er, as explained in “C onnecting Y our Zone 2 Speak- ers Directly to the A V re ceiv er” ( ➔ 68 ), you must set the “ Power ed Zone2 ” setting to “ Act ” (Acti vated).
70 En Contro lling Zone 2 with the Remote Contro ller Note • T o control Zone 2, you must press the remote controller’ s ZONE2 first . • ZONE2 turns re d wh ile Zone 2 is on. Note • Only analog input sources are output by the ZONE 2 LINE OUT and FRONT WIDE/ZONE 2 L/R terminals.
71 En Controlling iP od & Other Components Contr olling iP od USB can be used to play music f iles stored on iPod/ iPhone, which can be plugged into the A V recei ver’ s USB port. Playing Music Files on the iP od/iPhone This section explains ho w to play music files on the iPod/ iPhone.
72 En *2 The following iPod mode ls ar e not supported in Standard Mode. These iPod models can on ly be controlled in Extended Mode. *3 When you disconnect the iPod/iP hone, the A V receiver stores the mode. This means that if you disconnect when in Extended Mode, the A V receive r will start in Extended Mode when you next conn ect the iPod/iPhone.
73 En UP-A1 Dock W ith the UP-A1 Dock, you can easily play the music, photo, or movie stored on your Apple iPod th rough the A V receiv er and enjoy great sound.
74 En RI Dock W ith the RI Dock, you can easily play the music stored on your Apple iPod through the A V receiver and enjoy great sound, and watch iPod slidesho ws and videos on your TV .

76 En Contr olling Other Components Y ou can use the A V receiver’ s remote controller (RC-768M) to control your o ther A V components, includ- ing those made by other ma nufacturers. This section explains ho w to enter the re mote control code (with the default underlined) for a component that you want to con- trol: D VD, TV , CD, etc.
77 En Y ou’ll need to enter a code for each component that you want to control. Note • The remote co ntrol codes pr ovid ed are correct at the time of printing, but are subject to change. Onkyo components that are connected via u are con- trolled b y pointing the remote c ontroller at the A V recei v er, not the component.
78 En If you want to control an Onkyo co mponent by pointing the remote controller directly at it, us e the follo wing remote control codes: ` 32900 : Onkyo Blu-ray Disc player ` 32901 : Onkyo HD-D VD.
79 En Note • W ith some components, certain buttons may no t work as expected, and some may not work at all. ✔ : A vailable b u ttons *1 The p function is not supp or ted. The p sup- ported by the A V receiver is the CEC system control function of the HDMI standard.
80 En The A V recei ver’ s remote controller can learn the com- mands of other remote contro llers. By transmitting, for example, the Play command from your CD player’ s remote controller , the remote controller can learn it, and then transmit the e xact same command when its 1 is pressed in t he CD remote mode.
81 En Making Macr os Each ACTIVITIES can store one macro, and each macro can contain up to 32 commands. Note • Once you hav e taught a new m acro commands, the original macro will no longer work.
