11 En Connecting the A V Receiver Speaker Configura tion The follo wing table indicates the channels you should use depending on the number of speakers that you ha ve. For 7.1-channel surround-sound playback, you need se ven speakers and a po wered subwoofer .
12 En • Don’t connect mo re than one cable to each speak er ter- minal. Doing so may damage the A V receiver. • Don’t connect one speaker to se veral terminals. Connecting the Speaker Cab les Screw-type speak er terminals Using Banana Plugs • If you are using banana plugs, tighten th e speaker terminal before inserting the banana plug.
13 En Note • The front wide speaker s can also be connected to the FR ONT HIGH OR FRONT WIDE OR ZONE 2 SPEAKERS terminals. When doing so, set “ Fr ont High/Front W ide/Zone2 ” in Speaker Setup to “ Front Wide ” ( ➔ 36 ).
14 En Connected image with A V components • Before making any A V connections, read the manuals supplied with your A V components. • Don’t connect the po wer cord until you’ ve co mpleted and double-checke d all A V connections. • Push plugs in all the way to ma ke good connections (loo se connections can cause noise or malfunc- tions).
15 En Connect your components to the appropriate jacks. The default input assignments are sho wn below . ✔ : Assignment can be changed ( ➔ 34 ). Refer to “ About HDMI” ( ➔ 65 ) and “Using an RIHD-compatibl e TV , Player , or Recorder” ( ➔ 66 ).
16 En Connect your components to the appropr iate jack s. The default input assi gnments are sho wn below . ✔ : Assignment can be changed ( ➔ 35 ). Note • When you connect to both A UX I NPUT A UDIO jacks and A UX INPUT LINE IN jack at the same time, A UX INPUT LINE IN jack will be giv en a higher pr iority .
17 En Wi t h u (Remote Interactiv e), you can use the following special functions: ■ System On/A uto P ower On When you start playback on a component connected via u while the A V recei ver is on Standb y , the A V recei ver will automaticall y turn on and select that com- ponent as the input source.
18 En The A V recei ver supports se vera l connection formats for compat ibility with a wide range of A V equipment. The format you choose will depend on the formats supported by your co mponents.
19 En T urning On/Off the A V Receiver Tu r n i n g O n Pre ss ON/ST ANDBY on the front panel. or Pre ss RECEIVER f ollowed by ON/ST ANDBY on the remote controller . The A V receiv er comes on, the display lights, and the ST ANDBY ind icator go es off.
20 En Basic Operations Y ou can determine the langua ge used for the onscreen setup menus. See “OSD Setup ” ( ➔ 43 ). ■ Operating on the A V receiver ■ Operating with the remote contr oller Y ou can display various info rmation about the current input source as follows.
21 En Y ou can temporarily mute the output of the A V receiv er. Tip • T o unmute, press MUTING again or adjust the volume. • The Mute function is cancelled when the A V receiver is set to Standby . W ith the sleep timer , you can set the A V receiv er to turn off au tomatically after a specif ied period.
22 En Note *1 If Direct listening mode is selected, “ Dynamic E Q ” and “ Dynamic V olume ” cannot be selected. *2 Only when you ha ve selected “ Custom ” in the “ Picture Mode ” ( ➔ 42 ), pressing ENTER allows you to adjust the fol- lowing items; “ Brightness ”, “ Contrast ”, “ Hue ”, and “ Satu- ration ”.
23 En Using A udyssey 2EQ ® T o create a listeni ng en vi ronment in your home theater that all listeners will enjoy , Audyssey 2EQ takes measure- ments at up to three positions within the listening area. Position the microphone at ear he ight of a seated listener with the microphone tip pointe d directly at the ceiling using a tripod.
24 En Note • When Audyssey 2EQ Room Correction and Speaker Setup is complete, the “ Equalizer ” will be set to “ Audyssey ” ( ➔ 37 ). The A udyssey indicator will light ( ➔ 8 ). • Y ou can cancel Audysse y 2EQ Room Correction and Speaker Setup at any point in this proced ure simply by disconnecting the setup microphone.
25 En Listening to the Radio W ith the built-in tuner you can enjoy AM and FM radio stations. Y ou can store your fa vo rite stations as presets for quick selection.
26 En Y ou can store a combination of up to 40 of your fav orite FM/AM radio stations as presets. Note • Y ou can name your radio presets for easy identification ( ➔ 40 ). Its name is displayed instead of the band and frequency . Selecting Presets Tip • Y ou can also use the remote controller’s number b uttons to select a preset directly .
27 En Recor ding This section explains ho w to record the selected input source to a component with recording capa bility , and how to record audio and video from different sources. Connecting a Recor ding Component Note • The A V recei ver must be turned on for recording.
28 En Using the Listening Modes See “ About Listening Modes” for detailed information about the listening mod es ( ➔ 29 ). Listening Mode Buttons MO VIE/TV b utton This butto n selects the listening modes intended for use with movies and TV . MUSIC button This butto n selects the listening modes intended for use with music.
29 En The A V recei ver’ s listening modes can tr ansform your listening room into a movie theater or concert ha ll, with high f idel- ity and stunning surround sound. Explanatory Notes ■ Input Source The follow ing audio formats are supported by the listening mode.
30 En Listening Modes Listening Mode Description Input Source Speaker Lay out Direct In this mode, audio from the input source is output withou t surround-sound processing. T he “ Sp Config ” (presence of speakers), “ Sp Distanc e ” and “ A/V Sync ” settings are enabled, but much of the processing set via A UDIO is disabled.
31 En Dolby Digital In this mode, audio from the input source is output withou t surround-sound processing. “ Sp Conf ig ” (presence of speakers), “ Crossover ”, “ Sp Dis- tance ”, “ A/V Sync ” and much of the processing set via AU D I O are enabled.
32 En Onky o-Original DSP List ening Modes Note *1 When the input source contain s the encoded front high or fron t wide channel, the correspondi ng speake rs output the sound. *2 If there are no surr ound back speakers, or Powered Zone 2 is being used, Dolb y Pro Logic II is used.
33 En Ad vanced Setup The on-screen setup menus a ppear on the connected TV and provide a con venient way to change the A V rece iv er’ s various settin gs. Se ttings are organized into nine cate go- ries on the main menu . Carry out the settings by using the on-screen display .
34 En Explanatory No tes Main Menu Input/Output Assig n Monitor Out Y ou can specify the output resolution for the HDMI O UT and COMPONENT VIDEO MONIT OR OUT and have the A V receiv er upconv ert th e picture resolution as neces- sary to match the resolution suppo rted by your TV .
35 En Component Video Input If you connect a video component to a component video input, you must assign that input to an input selector . For example, if you con nect your Blu-ray Disc/D VD player to COMPONENT VIDEO IN 2 , you must assign “ IN2 ” to the “ BD/DVD ” input selector .
36 En ■ Speaker T erminal Assign Front High/Front Wide/Zone2 W ith this setting, you can specify the speake rs con- nected to FR ONT HIGH OR FR ONT WIDE OR ZONE 2 SPEAKERS terminals. ` Front High : Front high speakers can be used. ` Front W ide : Front wide speakers can be used.
37 En Note • This function can be set only if the “ Subwoofer ” setting is set to “ Ye s ”, and the “ Front ” setting is set to “ Full Band ”.
38 En Dolby ■ PLIIx Music (2ch Input) These settings apply to onl y 2-channel stereo sources. If you’ re not using an y surround back speakers, these settings apply to Dolby Pr o Logic II, not Dolby Pro Logic IIx. Pa n o r a m a ` On : Panorama function on.
39 En Theater -Dimensional ■ Listening Angle ` Wid e : Select if the listening angle is 40 degrees. ` Narrow : Select if the listening angle is 20 degrees. W ith this setting, you can optimize the Theater-Dimen- sional listening mode by sp ecifying the angle of the front left and right speakers relati ve to the listening position.
40 En Note • Even if you have selected other than “ A udyssey ” in “ Equalizer ” setting after performing Audyssey 2EQ Room Cor rection and Speaker Setup, selecting “ On ” in the “ Dynamic EQ ” will change the “ Equalizer ” setting to “ A udyssey ” ( ➔ 37 ).
41 En T o correct a character: Note • T o name a radio preset, use TUNER to select AM or FM, and then select the preset ( ➔ 41 ). T o restore a cust om name to the default, erase the cust om name b y entering an empty whi te space for each le tter .
42 En ` Zoom : ` Wide Zoom : ` Au t o : According to the input si gnals and monitor o utput setting, the A V recei ver automaticall y selects the “ 4:3 ”, “ Full ”, “ Zoom ” or “ Wide Zoom ” mode. For the monitor output setting ( ➔ 34 ).
43 En ■ Saturation *1*2 ` –50 to 0 to +50 W ith this setting you ca n adjust saturation. “ –50 ” is the weakest color . “ +50 ” is the strongest color . Tip *1 This procedure can also be perf ormed on the remote controller by using the V ideo menu ( ➔ 21 ).
44 En ■ Langua ge ` English , Deutsch, Français , Es pañol, Italiano, Ned- erlands, Svenska, 中文 This setting determines th e language used for the on- screen setup menus. Main menu Har dware Set up Remote ID ■ Remote ID ` 1 , 2 , or 3 When sev eral Onkyo components are used in the same room, their remote ID codes may o verlap.
45 En ■ Audio Return Channel ` Off : Select “ Off ” if you don’t want to use audio return channel (ARC) function. ` Au t o : The audio signal from your TV tuner can be sent to the HDMI OUT of the A V receiver. Audio return channel (ARC) function en ables an HDMI 1.
46 En Speaker Le vels Y ou can adjust the volume of each speaker while listening to an input source. These temporary adjustme nts are cancelled when the A V recei ver is set to Standby . T o sav e the setting you made here, go to “Le v el Calibration” ( ➔ 37 ) before setting the A V recei ver to Standb y .
47 En ` CO AX : This can be selecte d when CO AXIAL IN has been assigned as an input source. If both coaxial and opti- cal inputs hav e been assigne d, coaxial input is auto- matically sele cted as a priority . ` OPT : This can be selecte d when OPTICAL IN has been assigned as an input source.
48 En Zone 2 In addition to your main listening room, you can also enjoy pla yback in the other room, or as we call Zone 2. And, you can select a different source for each room. There are two w ays you can connect Zone 2 speak ers: 1. Connect them directly to the A V receiv er.
49 En If you’ ve connected your Zone 2 speakers to the A V receiv er, as explained in “C onnecting Y our Zone 2 Speak- ers Directly to the A V re ceiv er” ( ➔ 48 ), you must set the “ Front Hi gh / Front W ide / Zone2 ” setting to “ Zone2 ”.

51 En Contr olling iP od Models sold are dif ferent depending on the re gion. Connecting an Onky o Doc k *1 BA No. Onkyo Dock Cable Note Pa ge A UP-A1 Dock (Universal Port Option Dock) — • When UP-A1 Dock th at seated iPod is connected, the powe r consumption on standby mode slightly increases.
52 En UP-A1 Dock W ith the UP-A1 Dock, you can easily play the musi c, photo, or movie stored on your Apple iPod through the A V receiv er and enjoy great sound.
53 En RI Dock W ith the RI Dock, you can easily play the music stored on your Apple iPod through the A V recei ver and enjoy great sound, and watch iPod slidesho ws and videos on your TV .
54 En ✔ : A vailable b uttons • W ith some iPod models, gene ratio ns and RI Docks, certain butto ns may not work as exp ected. • For detailed operation of the iPod, please re fer to the instruction manual of RI Dock. *1 This button does not turn the Onkyo DS-A2 or DS-A2X RI Dock on or off.
55 En Contr olling Other Components Y ou can use the A V receiv er’ s remote controller (RC-764M) to control your other A V components, includ- ing those made by other ma nufacturers. This section explains ho w to enter the re mote control code (with the default underlined) for a compo nent that you want to con- trol: D VD, TV , CD, etc.
56 En Y ou’ ll need to enter a code for each component that you want to control. Note • The remote control codes prov id ed are correct at the time of printing, but are su bject to change. Onkyo components that are connected via u are con- trolled by pointing the remo te controll er at the A V receiv er, not the component.
57 En Y ou can reset a REMO TE MODE to its default remote control code. Y ou can reset the remot e controller to its default setting s. By pressing REMO TE MODE that’ s been programm ed with the remote control code for your component, you can control your component as below .
58 En Note • W ith some components, certai n buttons may no t work as expected, and some may not work at all. ✔ : A vailable b uttons *1 The p func tion is not supported. The p sup- ported by the A V receiv er is the CEC system control function of the HDMI standard.

66 En Using an RIHD-compatible TV , Play er , or Recorder p , which stands for Remote Interacti ve o ver HDMI, is the name of the system control function found on Onkyo components. The A V recei ver can be us ed with C EC (Consumer Electronics Cont rol), which allo ws system control over HDMI and is part of the HDMI standard.
