8 Please be sure the computer that y ou will use with the DV R Security Kit complies w ith the following specifications: Windows ® X P,VISTA, 7, or 8 Mac ® OS 10.
9 Use the pr ovided power adapter. Do not use this product with a power source t hat applies m ore than the specified v oltage. Never insert metal into the DVR case or its open ings. Inserting met al into the DVR case may cause electr ic shock.
10 Do not attem pt to remove the top cover. If you observ e an y abnormal op eration, unplug the D VR immed iately and contact technical support. Do not attempt to op en the DVR to diagnose the cause of t he problem. (W ARNI N G: You may be su bjected to severe el ectrical shoc k if you remove the cover of the DVR.
11 If a problem occ urs, you may be ab l e to ea sily correct it yourself. The following table d escribes the most common problems and their sol utions.

15 6.3 Mouse You can use a mouse instead o f the re m ote contr ol to nav igate through your DVR’ s menus. Con nect the included mouse to the USB port on t he back of the D VR. Use the mouse b uttons to perf orm the following: 1. Left Butt on : Click to select a menu opti on.

17 7.1 Connecti ng the Power Suppl y 1. Plug the in cluded power adapter cable into t he back of the DV R . 2. Plug t he other end of the power adapter cab le into an availab l e wal l outlet (or, if you are using an uninterrupt able pow er supply , plug the adapter cabl e into one of its output sockets).
18 7.2 Connecti ng the DVR to a TV or Monitor Using the supp lied VGA connect or: 1. Connect the VG A connector t o the back of th e DVR’s VGA port . 2. Connect the other end of the cable to an av ailable VGA input on your TV or monitor. 3. Select the appropriate video input cha nnel on y our TV or m onitor to view the D VR.
19 8.1 Connecti ng Camera s to the DVR 1. Your DVR sy stem comes with one 60 -ft. coax ial cable per camera. Connect e ach cable to a c amera using the B NC connectors (yellow connector) and the D C connectors (red connector). 2. Plug the other end of the cables int o the Video Input ports on t he back pane l of the DVR.
20 8.2 Mounting the C ameras 1. Choose a l ocation : Decide where you would like to mount the camera. 2. Indicate s crew positions : Mark three h oles on the surfa ce where you plan to mount the camer a, using the holes i n the camer a base as a guide.
21 9.1 Sy stem Initialization After y ou plug in the p ower adapter, the DVR w ill automatical l y start up and display the Night Owl logo on y our TV while initializi ng. After init ialization, your screen will display a live cam era view, showing al l the cameras t hat are currently connected to the DV R .
22 9.2 On -Screen Dis play The on-scree n display will also sh ow the following infor m ation: Date & Tim e: Displ ays the date and ti me on the sy stem . Channel Title/Number: Displays the chan nel name, which you can set in the C amera Menu.
23 Use the Start up Wizard to enter the security sy stem ’s basic sett i ngs, networ k settings, record settings, and HDD settings. The Start up W izard w il l open w hen the DVR is powe red on. Refer to t he Startup G uide for step- by -step instruct i ons on us i ng the Startup W izard.
24 Before you can access any m enus, you must log in. Remote ID: This number should match the number in parenthese s to the right of the field. User Name: Enter the user name you created in the Startup Wizard or the User Menu. If you ha ve not created a user nam e , leave this s etting as “admin .
25 O pen s the menu interfac e. A llows you to chec k one channel at a t ime to enlarg e the selected channel to a full -screen v iew. A llows you to enter into a multi-scre en view. A llows y ou to start/stop an auto sequenc e . This will display the cameras as a slide show.
26 When you open the Main M enu y ou will see a line of icons at the top of th e screen. Eac h icon represent s a different menu. T he menu na m es are l isted below.
27 Basic Menu Use the Bas ic Menu to access the Sy stem, Date/Time, Display, Record, and User m enus. Chapter 14: Basic Menu Be sure to A pply all changes y ou make in the m enus. If y ou do not apply the changes, they will not be sav ed. You can also select the Default button on any page to restore the DVR’s defa ul t settings.
28 14.1 Sy stem Menu The Syst em Menu allows you to change the language, output reso l ution , and logout time, and turn t he Startup W izard o n/off. It is recomm ended that you leave t he Device Name and Remote ID fields at their default values.
29 14.2 Date/Tim e Menu You should set the date and tim e when first setting up your system. You can also configure Daylight Sav i ng Time (D ST) settings. To access the Date/Time Menu, se lect the Basic but ton, and then select Date/Time fro m the list on the left side o f the scre en.
30 14.2.2 DST M enu Use the DST M enu to configure D aylight Sav ing Time sett ings. To access the DST Menu, select the B asic button, select Date/Time from the list on the left side of the screen, and then selec t DST. Enable : Select t hi s box if y ou would like to enab l e the Daylight Saving Time settings.
31 14.3 .1 Display M enu Use t he Disp lay M enu to config ure channel name, channel masking, co lor , and time/na m e settings. To access the Display M enu , sel ect the Basic button and t hen select Display f rom the list o n the left side of the screen.
32 14.3 .1.1 Mask Screen Use t he Mas k Screen to b l ock out certain areas of a channel screen. To access the Mask Screen, sel ect the Basic butt on , and then select Display f rom the list o n the left side of the screen. Select the Setti ngs button in the M ask colu mn.
33 14.3.1.2 Color Scree n Use t he Co l or Screen to a dj ust the co l ors of a ch annel that is being recorded. To access the Color Scre en, select the Bas ic button and then sel ect Display f rom the list o n the left side of the screen. Select the Setti ngs button in the Color column.
34 14.3.1.3 Time/ Name Screen The Time/Na me Screen is used t o show/remove the date/time and a channel na m e display ed on the screen. To access the Time/Name Screen , select the Basic button and t hen select Display f rom the list o n the left side of the screen.
35 14. 3.2 A uto SEQ Menu Use t he Auto SEQ Menu to adjust t he channels and time t hat will be displayed whe n you start the auto se quence. To access the Auto SEQ M enu, select the Basic button, select D isplay from the list on the left side of t he screen, and t hen select A uto SEQ.
36 14.4.1 Recor d Menu Use t he Rec ord Menu to enab l e recordin g, set audio preference s, and specify how y ou would like t o record on each chann el . To access the Record Menu ’s bas ic functions, select the Basic button , select Recor d from the list on t he lef t side of t he screen, and then select Basic.
37 14.4.2 Bit R ate Menu The Bit Rat e Menu allow s y ou to set the quality of th e recorded video. To access the Bit Rate Menu, select the Basic button, sel ect Recor d from the list on the left side of the screen, and then selec t Bit Rate . CH: Indic ates the channel t hat you will be configurin g .
38 14.4.3 Resol ution Choose bet ween D1 (704x480) (H i gh), H D 1 (704x2 40) (Medium), or CI F (352x240) (Low ) resolutions to record video s. To help maximize the DVR’s hard drive spa ce, use the lowest r esolution. D1 Resoluti on (704x480 pixels) : The highest resolution.
39 14.4.4 Sche du le Me nu The Schedu l e Menu allow s you to schedule r ecordings. To acc ess the Schedule Menu, select the Basic button, sele ct Record f ro m the list on the left side of the screen, and then selec t Schedule . CH : Indicat e s the chann el that you w il l be configurin g .
40 14.5 User M enu The User Me nu allows you to add users and permis si ons for tho se users. To access the User Menu, select the Bas i c button, s elect Record from t he list on the l eft side of the scr een, and then se lect User . User Name: Disp l ays the names that y ou assign to users.

44 15 .1 Alarm M enu 15.1.1 Motio n Menu The Motion Menu allows you to conf igure t he motion settings on y our DVR. To access the Motion Me nu, select the Advanc ed button, select A larm from the list on the left s ide of the screen, and then select M otion.
45 15.1.1.1 A rea Screen The Area Scr een allows you to see areas that will a nd will not detect motion. To ac cess the Area Screen, select the Advanced bu tton, select A larm fro m the list on the left side of the screen, and then selec t Motion . Select Settings in the Area column for t he channel you ar e customizing.
46 15. 1.1.2 Sc hedule Scree n The Schedu l e Screen a llows you t o choose when to record. To access the Motion Me nu ’ s Sch edule Screen, select t he Advanced button, select A larm from t he list on the l eft side of the screen, and t hen Motion .
47 15 .1.1 .3 Trigger Screen The Trigger Screen all ows y ou see what has triggered an alarm. To access the Trigger S creen, se l ect the Adv anced button, select A larm from the list on the left s ide of the screen, and then select M otion . Select Settings in the Trigger column f or the c hannel you are config uring.
48 15.1.2 Video Loss Menu The Video Lo ss Menu allows y ou to configure the vi deo loss setti ngs on your DVR. To access th e Video Loss Menu, select the Adv anced button, sele ct Alarm from the list on the left side of the screen, and t hen select Vide o Loss.
49 15.1.3 Camera Block Menu The Camer a Block Menu allows you to conf i gure th e settings on your DVR for when the c amera is cov ered . To access the Camera Bloc k Menu, select the Advanced button, select Alarm from the list on the left side of the scr een, and then se l ect Camera Block .
50 15.1.4 Others Menu The Others Me nu allows you to configure the settings on y our DVR for different alar m features. To access the Others Me nu, select the Advanc ed button, select A larm from the list on the left side of the screen, and t hen select Ot he rs .
51 15 .2 Net w ork Menu 15 .2.1 LA N Menu The LAN Menu a llows you t o configure the IP addre ss for your DVR. Make sure that t he DVR is plugg ed directly into y our internet router. To access the LAN Men u, select the Advance d button, select Netwo rk from the list on the left side of the screen, and t hen select LA N .
52 15.2.2 PPP oE Menu The PPPo E Menu allows you to configure the DVR using broa dband dial-up netw ork access. To access the PPPoE Menu, sel ect the Advanced b utton, select Network from the list on the left side of the screen, and t hen select PPP oE .
53 15.2.3 Port Menu The Port Menu allows you to v iew your DVR t hrough t he Int ernet, software, and mobile ph ones. To access the Port M enu, select t he Advance d butt on, select Network f rom the list on the left side of the scree n, and then selec t Por t.
54 15.2.4 Sub- Stream Menu The Sub-Str eam Menu allows y ou to configure the net work transfer settings. To access the Sub-Stream Menu, select the Advanced but ton, se lect Network fro m the list on the left side of th e screen, then select Sub-Stream.
55 15.3.1 DDNS M enu The DDNS Men u allows you to con figure DDNS set up after you have registered f or a free domain na me at http://www.nig htowldvr.com . To access the DDNS Menu, select the Advanced but ton, select CO MM , and then sel ect DDNS from the l i st on the left side of the screen.
56 15.3.2 E-Mail Menu The E-Mail Men u allows you to con figure email alert settings. To access the E-Mail Menu, select the Advanced but ton, select CO MM , and then sel ect E-Mail from the l ist on the left side of the scree n. E-mail: A llows you t o enable/disable e m ail alerts.
57 15.3.3 UPnP Menu The UPnP Me nu allows you t o enable the UPnP (U ni versal P lug and Play) setting of t he DVR. To access the UPnP Men u, select the A dvanced button, sel ect COMM, a nd then select U PnP from the list on the left side of the screen.
58 15.4 PTZ M enu The PTZ Menu a llows you t o configure settings on y our DVR to control a PTZ (Pan Ti lt Zoo m) camera. (PTZ ca mera not inc luded .) To access the PTZ Menu, select the Advanced button and t hen select P.T.Z. from th e list on the left si de of the scr een.
59 Record Search Menu Use this m enu to find, play back, and bac k up recor ded video. Be sure to A pply all changes made to the menus. I f you do not apply t he changes, they will not be saved. You can also select the Default button on any page to restore the DVR’s origi nal settings.
60 The Calendar lets you select t he dates of recorded video you wish to pl ay back. To access the Record Search M enu, select the Rec ord Search button. The Calendar ap pears on the left. Calendar Left / Right A rrow s: Swit ch between months a nd years.
61 The File List shows a list of recor dings. To access the Record Search M enu, select the Rec ord Search button. The File List is on the right. File List CH: Indic ates the channel t hat was recorded. Start Time : Indicates t he time that the recording be gan.
62 When you p lay back a recorded file, a number of c ontrols are availa ble. Use t he C alendar, File Lis t, and Playback button to playback r ecorded f iles. The playbac k screen has the following buttons: R ewinds the record ed video. P ause s/plays the recorded video.

66 18 .1 Device M enu The Device M enu allows you t o view t he MAC Address, serial number and the firmwar e version of your DVR. To access the Device Menu, sel ect the Information button and then select Device . Device N ame: The DVR’s name. Remote I D : T he ID of t he DVR if there are mult iple DVRs in one location.
67 18.2.1 LA N Menu The LAN Menu allows y ou to informatio n about y our Local Area Networ k (LAN). To access the LAN Men u, select the Infor m ation butt on , select N etwork, and then sel ect LAN. Network S tatus : Indicates w hether the DVR is pro perly connected to the internet .
68 18.2.2 PPP oE Men u The PPPo E (Point- to -Point Protocol over Ethernet ) Menu allows you t o view infor m ation abo ut your network. To access th e PPPoE Menu, select the Inf ormation button, sel ect Net work, and then sel ect PPPoE. Network S tatus : Shows w hether the DVR is properly connected t o the internet.
69 18 .3 Online Me nu The Online Men u allows you to v iew the computers t hat are current l y connected to the DVR. To access the Online Men u, select the Infor m ation but ton and then s elect Online. User Nam e: The name of t he computer that is acce ssing the DVR.
70 18 .4 Record M enu The Record M enu allows you to v iew the configured r ecording res olution of the DVR. To access the Record Menu, sel ect the Infor mation button and the n select Record . CH: Indic ates the channel. Resolutio n: Shows the recordi ng resolution of ea ch channel.

72 19 .1 Basic Me nu The Bas ic Me nu allows you to perf orm firmware up grades and maintain the DVR’s per formance . To access the Basic Menu, select the Mainte nance button and then se lect Basic . Auto M aintain: Al lows you t o choose when you would l ike your system to aut omatically reboot.
73 19 .1.1 Firm ware Upgrade Your sy stem will period ically need a firmware upgr ade to ensure optimal performanc e. Visit www .NightOwlSP.com to see if upgrades are av ailable for your sy stem. To upgrade f irmware: 1. Download an d save the latest f irmware upgrad e for your sy stem from www.
74 19 .2 Settings M enu The Settings Menu allows y ou to import or export t he D VR ’s setti ngs . To access the Settings M enu , select the Maintenan ce button and then select Settin gs . Export S ettings: Allows you to copy all o f the settings on the DVR to a flash driv e.
75 This chapter will show you how to connect your DVR to the internet . You will learn how to properly connect your DVR to y our router/modem and set up port con f igurations, internet configurations, M obile configuratio ns, and DDNS reg istration.
76 20.1 Connecti ng the DVR and R outer/Modem Use this sect ion to learn how t o connect the DVR to your router/ modem. DVR 1. Make sure th at your DVR is con nected to a power o utlet. 2. Connect the DVR directly to the router through an o pen Ethernet port with t he included Ethernet cable.
77 20.2 Windo w s Net work Co nfiguration In this secti on you w ill determ ine basic i nformation about y our network Make sure th at the DVR is properly conn ected to the router/ m odem an d that y ou have a Windows co m puter conne cte d to th e same router.

79 Changin g the Net w ork S ettings on t he DVR For the fol l owing step s, use the information t hat you just wrote down. To access the LAN Men u, select the Advance d button, select Netwo rk from the list on the left side of the screen, and t hen select LA N.
80 20.3 Appl e (Mac) Net work Config uration Follow the st eps in th is section to configur e remote acces s for an Apple Macintosh co mputer. Make sure th at the DVR is properly conn ected to the router/mo dem and that you have a Macintosh computer connected t o the same router/modem.
81 Use the in f ormation t hat you just wrote down for t he next steps. To access the LAN Men u select Advanced butt on, select Networ k from the list on the l eft side of the scr een, and th en select the LAN tab. You can manually enter th e IP addr ess/DNS serv er informatio n into the DVR by selecting Use the f ollowing IP addr ess.
82 After you hav e configured the Networ k Settings, y ou will need t o forward the necessary ports to be able t o view t he DVR over the Internet from anywhere in t he world. Refer to y our router’s documentati on to see how po rt forwarding wor k s for that device.
83 5. You w ill need t o enter a new port forwarding entry for each port that your DVR use s: Media Port (9000), Web Port (2049 ), and Server Port (2050). R epeat t he steps below for each entry. 6. 84 22 .1 Checki ng the Ports A fter Port Forwardin g Once you have forward ed the necessary ports on your router, you should check to ma ke sure they hav e been correctly forw arded. 1. Go to ht tp://www . yougetsigna l .com/too l s/open-ports / . 2. Type in port 9000 and select the Ch eck butt on to see if the port tests as open or closed.
85 22.1 Registeri ng a Fr ee Domain Name ( DDNS) This option a ll ows you to set up a f ree webs ite address that w ill point bac k to the DVR r egardless of whet her the IP Address c hanges. If you do not have a stat i c IP Address, you should use th is option.
86 4. Create a do main name. 5. If the doma i n name t hat you have chos en is available, y ou will see a window that tells y ou that your domain was s uccessfully created.
87 22.2 Addi ng your N ew Domain Name to y ou r DVR Use the DD NS Menu to configure DDN S setup a fter y ou have registered for a free do main name. To access the DDNS Menu, select the Advanced but ton, select CO MM , and then sel ect DDNS from the l i st on the left side of the scree n.
88 Use the Intern et Explorer or Contro l Management S of tware to acc ess your DVR remot el y ov er the Internet or within your loca l area network. Make sure that y ou have completed the st eps in Chapters 20 and 21 of this manual be fore try ing to access the DVR us ing this software.
89 23.2 DVR Lo gin User Nam e : Type in t he user name that y ou created in the Password Men u of the DVR. Pass word: Enter the password that w as assigned to the User. Languag e: If you would like the infor mation to be displayed in another lang uage, you can change i t to En glish, French, or Spanish.
90 23.3 Using Inter net Explorer Internet Exp lorer is a remote-v iewing program that al lows y ou to view live and recorded v ideo over the I nternet.
91 Play Control T ake s a snapsh ot of the video. Starts/stops recording on all channel s. Stops/pla ys the live v ideo feed . E nables Main- Stream on all chann els. This requires a fast networ k for transmissio n. E nables Sub-Stre am on all chan nels.
92 PTZ Contr ol These contro l settings can only be used for cameras that have Pan, Tilt, and Zoom f eatures. (A PTZ ca mera is not i ncluded.) Arrows: Mov e the camera ma nually in the direct i on of the arrow.

97 23.4 Using C ontrol M anageme nt Software (CMS – Nightowl Vie w ) You can use the CMS softw are to access one or more DVRs remotely ov er the Internet or within y our local area networ k. Make sure that y ou have completed t he Rem ote Access ch apter of this manual be fore trying to access the DVR using this sof tware.
98 Starting t he CMS You will hav e to register as an ad ministrator when st arting the CMS. Ty pe: Choose betw een Local and Serv er . Local a l lows y ou to configure DVRs. Server allows you to enter a server address. For example, the Night Owl DD NS Server.
99 Device List This menu show s all DVRs that have been added to the CMS. Device List : L is ts all DVRs that have been added t o the CMS. A llows you to ref resh dev ices.
100 Device Tab To add a dev i ce you m ust first add a group by selecting the p lus (+) sign in the navigati on pane. Next, right-cl ick your mous e on the group that you would like t o add the device to, and then select A d d a Device.
101 Channel G roup Tab To configure a Channel Group, sel ect the plus (+) si gn in the navigation pane. 1. Make sure th at your DVRs are properly added to th e software.
102 Patrol Tab To configur e a patrol group y ou must select the p l us (+) sign in the navigation pa ne. This allows the Channe l Groups t o rotate. 1. Make sure th at you have created Channel Groups. 2. Give the P atrol Grou p a name. 3. Select the a mount of time in whi ch you would like the channel groups to rotat e.
