P age 12 2 PLA YING THE PIANO 2. PLA YING THE PIANO 1) BASIC OPERA TIONS This section provides the basic procedures f or turning the power on and playing the CN41 piano .
P age 13 2 PLA YING THE PIANO DEMO SONGS The CN41 includes 30 built-in sound demo songs . Each of the demo songs presents a musical piece to introduce the diff erent preset sounds. Step1 Press the CONCER T MA GIC and LESSON b uttons simultaneously .
P age 14 2 PLA YING THE PIANO SELECTING A PRESET SOUND Step1 Press the SOUND SELECT b utton below the name of the instrument to be pla yed. When the button is pressed, the LED indicator will turn on, indicating that this sound has been selected.

For e xample, a piano can be la yered with strings, or a church organ with a choir sound. Step1 Press and hold down a SOUND SELECT b utton to select the fi rst desired sound.

P age 19 2 PLA YING THE PIANO 5) EFFECTS/REVERB When selecting some preset sounds, the LED indicator f or the EFFECTS or REVERB buttons ma y turn on automatically . This is because cer tain preset sounds are prepared with an eff ect enabled as their def ault setting.

P age 21 2 PLA YING THE PIANO 6 ) SELECTING THE T OUCH SENSITIVITY The T OUCH function allows diff erent touch sensitivities f or the keyboard to be selected, other than the standard touch of an acoustic piano . The sensitivity can be changed to one of fi ve diff erent settings: Light, Light +, Heavy , Heavy + or Off .
P age 22 2 PLA YING THE PIANO 7) TRANSPOSING THE PIANO The transpose function allows the piano’ s keys to be r aised or lowered in half steps . This is par ticularly useful when accompanying instruments with diff erent tones, or when a song learned in one key must be pla y ed in another key .
P age 23 2 PLA YING THE PIANO 8) PLA YING WITH CONCER T MA GIC The great German composer Johann Sebastian Bach once said “Pla ying the keyboard is simple . Just strike the right keys at the right time” . Many pianists wish it were quite that straightf orward.
P age 24 2 PLA YING THE PIANO The speed or tempo of the song can be adjusted by pressing and holding the TEMPO button and pressing the V ALUE buttons. While listening, diff erent Concer t Magic songs can be selected by pressing the V ALUE buttons.
P age 25 2 PLA YING THE PIANO CONCER T MAGIC P ART V OLUME BALANCE When used with Concer t Magic, the BALANCE slider adjusts the v olume balance of the melody par t and the accompaniment. Step1 Mov e the balance slider to the r ight or left to adjust the v olume balance.
P age 26 2 PLA YING THE PIANO SKILLFUL These songs range in diffi culty from moderately diffi cult to diffi cult. T o perform them, tap out the rhythm of both the melody and the accompaniment notes on any k ey on the k eyboard, such as ‘Waltz of the Flo wers’ shown below .
P age 27 2 PLA YING THE PIANO CONCER T MAGIC DEMO MODES There are three wa ys to listen to the Concer t Magic songs in the DEMO mode. ALL PLA Y Press the CONCER T MAGIC b utton and then press the PLA Y/ST OP button without selecting a song. The CN41 piano will pla y back all of the Concer t Magic songs in order .

It is impor tant to practice pla ying the piano at the correct tempo and with a steady rhythm. The CN41 piano’ s metronome tool helps learners to achiev e this by pro viding a steady beat to play along with.

LESSON FUNCTION The CN41’ s Lesson function helps perf or mers to practice the piano with a collection of etudes from Cz er ny , Burgmüller and Be yer , or songs from Alfred’ s Basic Piano Library and Alfred’ s Premiere Piano Course lesson books (USA, Canada, A ustralia and UK only).
P age 32 LESSON FUNCTION 3 2) LISTENING T O AND PLA YING A SONG Step1 Press the PLA Y/ST OP button to pla y the selected song. There will be a one bar count-in bef ore the song star ts to play . Press the PLA Y/STOP b utton to stop the song. Press the REW button to re wind the song and the FF button to f ast f orward the song.
P age 33 LESSON FUNCTION 3 3) RECORDING A SONG PRA CTICE Listening to recorded lesson song practice provides an e xcellent tool f or self-ev aluation. Step 1 Press the REC b utton. The LED indicator f or the REC button will star t to fl ash to indicate that the CN41 piano is ready to record.
P age 34 RECORDER 4 4. RECORDER The RECORDER function records performances in a similar wa y to that of a tape recorder . Howe ver , the CN41 piano records songs as digital data, instead of audio data - storing the music inside the instrument.
P age 35 RECORDER 4 Step4 Star t to play the piano . The recorder will automatically star t recording with the fi rst note pla yed. During this time, the LED indicators f or the REC and PLA Y/ST OP buttons will be turned on. Any changes made to the sound while recording will also be recorded.
P age 36 RECORDER 4 2) PLA YING BA CK A SONG The PLA Y/STOP b utton is used to star t and stop playbac k of the recorded song, and to also select which song and par t is pla yed. Step 1 Press the PLA Y / ST OP button. The currently selected song and par ts will be shown in the LCD displa y , and the CN41 piano is ready to playbac k the song.
P age 37 RECORDER 4 3) ERASING A SONG This function allows an y songs that are no longer listened to, to be cleared. Step 1 Press the PLA Y / ST OP and REC buttons sim ultaneously . The LED indicators f or the PLA Y / ST OP and REC buttons will start to fl ash, and song erase inf ormation will be shown in the LCD displa y .

USB (T O DEVICE) OPERA TIONS The CN41 includes two USB (to de vice) por ts, allo wing USB memor y or USB fl opp y disk drive de vices to be connected to the piano . The fi rst connected device will appear as ‘USB_A’, the second connected device will appear as ‘USB_B’.

Step2 Press the MENU b uttons to mov e the cursor , then press the V ALUE buttons to set whether the par t will be muted or pla yed.

P age 41 USB (T O DEVICE) OPERA TIONS 5 2) USB MENU There are six USB Menus. Press the MENU buttons to select a USB Menu, then press one of the V ALUE buttons to enter the selected USB Menu. Press the STOP b utton to return to the previous menu. Do not attempt to disconnect USB devices while being accessed.

Step1 Press the MENU and V ALUE buttons to scroll through the list of fi les and director ies, then press the REC b utton to select the song or director y to be deleted.

P age 44 MENU FUNCTIONS 6 6. MENU FUNCTIONS The Menu Functions allow v arious parameters f or controlling the CN41 piano’ s tuning, system and MIDI functions to be adjusted.
P age 45 MENU FUNCTIONS 6 2) LO WER OCT A VE SHIFT This function allows the lo wer par t to be raised by one , two , or three octav es when using SPLIT mode. Step 1 Press the MENU b uttons to select the Lower Octa v e Shift function. The Lower Octa ve Shift v alue will be shown on the second line of the LCD displa y .
P age 46 MENU FUNCTIONS 6 When set to ON, the sustain pedal is active f or the low er sound when the pedal is depressed. When set to OFF , the sustain pedal will not be active f or the low er sound when the pedal is depressed, howe ver the sustain pedal will still be active f or the upper sound.
P age 47 MENU FUNCTIONS 6 5) LA YER D YNAMICS When using DU AL mode, sometimes simply adjusting the v olume balance between the two la yered sounds is not enough to create the desired sound character , especially if both sounds are v er y dynamic. T wo equally dynamic sounds can be diffi cult to control and pla y comf or tably .
P age 48 MENU FUNCTIONS 6 6) D AMPER HOLD ON / OFF This function determines whether sounds such as organ or str ings should be held (ON) or gradually deca y (OFF) when the damper pedal is depressed. Step 1 Press the MENU b uttons to select the Damper Hold ON/OFF function.
P age 49 MENU FUNCTIONS 6 7) TUNING This function allows the piano’ s pitch to be fi nely adjusted, and may pro ve useful when pla ying with other instruments. Step 1 Press the MENU b uttons to select the T uning function. The T uning value will be shown on the second line of the LCD displa y .
P age 50 MENU FUNCTIONS 6 8) TEMPERAMENT The CN41 piano off ers immediate access to a variety of musical temperaments popular during the Renaissance and Baroque periods. It may prov e interesting and educational to experiment with diff erent temperaments, other than the modern ‘equal temperament’ standard this is dominant in music today .

P age 54 MENU FUNCTIONS 6 10) MIDI CHANNEL This function is used to determine on which MIDI channel the CN41 piano will exchange MIDI inf or mation with e xter nal MIDI de vices and instruments or a personal computer. The selected channel will function as both the transmit and receiv e channel.
P age 55 MENU FUNCTIONS 6 11) LOCAL CONTR OL ON / OFF This function determines whether the CN41 piano’s sound will be pla y ed from the piano’ s ke yboard (ON) or only from an e xter nal MIDI de vice (OFF).

Step 1 Press the MENU b uttons to select the Send Program Change Number function. The Program Change Number will be sho wn on the second line of the LCD display .
P age 58 MENU FUNCTIONS 6 14) MUL TI-TIMBRAL MODE This function allows the CN41 piano to receiv e data on more than one MIDI channel simultaneously . In this mode, the CN41 piano can pla y different musical parts with different sounds f or each par t.
P age 59 MENU FUNCTIONS 6 15) CHANNEL MUTE This function determines which MIDI channels are activated to receive MIDI inf ormation when Multi-Timbral Mode is set to ON. Each of the 16 channels can be activated or deactivated individually . Step 1 Press the MENU b uttons to select the Channel Mute function.
P age 60 MENU FUNCTIONS 6 16) MIDI CLOCK The MIDI Clock is the data code that MIDI instruments use as the ref erence for the tempo setting. When set to Internal, the CN41 piano uses its own built-in clock to control tempo settings .
