900 SERI ES™ INTRODUCTION Y our 900 Series™ Ultra Wide Screen Fishing System comes in several dif ferent configurations. See the following list of pr oducts, all of which ar e cover ed by this manual, to find your 900 Series™ configuration: NO TE: Only the 987c SI Combo model comes with GPS and built -in cartography .
2 GPS AN D CART OGRAPHY (With 987c SI Combo models only) Y our 987c SI Combo model uses GPS and sonar to determine your position, display it on a grid, and provide detailed underwater inf ormation. The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a sat ellite navigation syst em designed and maintained by the U.
Use the illustration to locate the position of the MM C and SD slot cover , remove the cover , and then inser t an MMC and/ or an SD card into one or both slots - either slot can accept either an MMC or an SD card. The label on both types of cards should face down and away from y ou so that you’re looking at the back of the card.
4 Inside the boat there is often a c hannel or conduit used for other wiring , this can be used to rout e cables. Be sure to r oute the cable as far as practical from the antenna cable of VHF radios or tachometer cables to r educe the possibility of interference.
GIMBAL MOUNTING TH E C ONTROL HEAD If you are gimbal mounting the Humminbird® 900 Series™, you can pre-assemble the unit in order to plan the best mounting location.
6 5. Set the gimbal brack et aside and drill the four mounting screw holes using a 5 /32" (4.0 mm) drill bit. 6a. If the cables must pass through a hole directly beneath the mounting brac ket, mark and drill an additional 1" (25 mm) hole centered between the f our mounting holes.
8. Insert cable connectors into the pr oper recesses on the cable collector insert. The cable connectors are k eyed to prevent reverse installation, so be careful not to force the c onnectors int o the wrong slots. If you don ’t have a cable for ever y hole in the insert, install the blank plugs to protect the con trol head from the weather .
8 9 . While holding cables in place in the cable collector insert, thread the cables through the slot in the bot tom of the cable c ollector cover , line up the cable collector insert and cover , then slide the cover into place on the insert. NO TE: T ab on cable collector insert goes into slot on cover .
5. Inser t the contr ol head through the mounting hole from the fron t side of the dash. From the bac k side of the dash, align the two threaded rods on the rear of the housing with the two holes on the in- dash mounting bracket.
10 C ONN ECTING TH E C ONTROL H EAD POWER CABLE T O THE BOA T A 6' (2 m) long power cable is included to supply power to the c ontrol head. Y ou may shorten or lengthen the cable using 18 gauge multi- stranded copper wire.
TRANSDUCER I NS T ALLA TION There are two dif feren t installation methods for your transducer: • T ransom T ransducer • T rolling Motor T ransducer .
12 NO TE: Rough seas also can aff ec t the readings of the Side Imaging transducer . NO TE: The transducer must be mounted at least 15” from the pr opeller to avoid interference from the motor .
1. First, determine the best location on the transom to install the transducer . Consider the f ollowing to find the best location: • It is very important to locate the transducer in an area whic h is relatively free of turbulent water .
14 5. Align the metal moun ting brack et with the mounting holes. The center slot should be above the two out er slots. (This brack et and all other hardware supplied is top quality stainless steel for maximum strength and corrosion pr otection.
T o adjust the running position of the transducer: The transducer mounting brack et allows height and tilt adjustment, while the pivot bolt allows angular adjustment. These adjustments will help reduce cavitation. Initially , adjust the transducer as described in the following paragraphs.
16 2. If you will be routing the cable through a hole in the transom, drill a 5 /8" diameter (16 mm) hole above the waterline. Rout e the cable through this hole, then fill the hole with marine- grade silicone sealant and proceed t o the next step immediately .
TES T AN D FIN ISH THE TRANSDUCER I NS T ALLA TION When you have installed both the contr ol head, the transducer , and accessories and have routed all the cables , you must per form a final test bef ore locking the transducer in place.
18 GPS RECE IVER INST ALLA TION (987c SI Combo models only) NO TE: Y ou will only need to perform this procedure if you have a GPS R eceiver . T o optimize per formance of the GPS receiver , mount it in an area that has full e xposure to the sky . The effective area of reception is 10 ° above the horizon.
AC CESS U NDER MOU NTING LOCA TION Follow these steps t o deck mount the GPS r eceiver when routing the cable down through the mounting location: 1. Determine the best location, then test r oute the 20' (6 m) cable from the mounting location to the c ontrol head.
20 FIN ISH ROUTING TH E CABLE AND CH ECK GPS RECE IVER OPERA TION Af ter installing a GPS receiver , you should perform the following procedure t o finish routing the GPS cable to the c ontrol head and to chec k to make sure that the c ontrol head is working correctly .
The Speed accessory incorporates a paddlewheel-type speed sensor in a high-impact plastic housing. The module is intended for installation on the transom, and will work well on almost any boat. In addition to the parts supplied, you will need a hand drill with various bits, marine- grade silicone sealant, and a Phillips head scr ewdriver .
22 2. Clean the paddlewheel by disengaging the axial clip from the housing wedge and rotating it forward. Once you have rotat ed the axial clip, remove it fr om the housing by sliding it away from the holes in the housing. 3. Clean the removed paddlewheel with a mild solution of biodegradable soap or hot water .

24 WHA T ’S ON TH E SONAR DISPLA Y The 900 Series™ can display a variety of useful information about the area under and adjacen t to your boat, including the following it ems: Sonar Color Bar - color spectrum indicating low to high sonar intensity returns, where red indicates high intensity and white indicat es low intensity .
UN DERS T ANDI NG SONAR HIST ORY It is important to understand the significance of the 900 Series™ display . The display does NO T show a literal 3- dimensional representation of what is under the water .
26 WhiteLine® highlights the strongest sonar r eturns in white, resulting in a distinctive outline. This has the benefit of clearly defining the bot tom on the display . WHA T ’S ON TH E SIDE IMAGING DISPLA Y Side Imaging displays a number of easily recognizable f eatures that allow for accurat e interpretation of bot tom con tour and str ucture. For Side Imaging, the bottom c omposition determines the intensity of the sonar r eturn.
28 SIDE IMAGING TECH NOLOGY: HO W IT WORKS Side Imaging sonar uses two very precise sonar beams that are directed to either side of the boat and “illuminate ” the bottom c ontour , structure, and fish, and display results in a “picture-like ” image.

KEY FUNCTIONS Y our 900 Series™ user interface consists of a set of easy-to-use k eys that work with various on-screen views and menus to give you flexibility and con trol ov er your fishing experience.

34 VIEWS AN D READOUTS All views have an Information Bar on the left side of the screen, c onsisting of readouts that are stack ed ver tically , and that change fr om view to view .
SONAR Z OOM VI EW Sonar Zoom View increases the displayed r esolution to separate sonar r eturns that are very close together , such as those caused by fish suspended close to the bot tom or within structure. In Zoom View , the display is split to show a narrow slice of the full range view on the right and the zoomed view on the lef t.
36 SPLIT SONAR VIEW Split Sonar View displays sonar returns from the 50 kHz wide beam on the lef t side of the screen and displays sonar returns from the 200 kHz narr ow beam on the right side of the screen.
SIDE/SONAR COMBO VIEW Side/Sonar Combo View shows r egular sonar information and side imaging sonar information in a combination split scr een. Y ou can per form any of the functions for either of the.
38 BIRD’S EYE VI EW (987c SI Combo models only) Bird's Eye View shows a 3D perspective view of the track and the c har t land cont our from a point abo ve and behind the boat (the eye point). As the boat turns, the eye point moves t o follow the boat.
CHART VIEW (987c SI Combo models only) Chart View shows car tography fr om the built -in UniMap™ or an optional MMC map for the area surr ounding your current position.

42 W A YPOI NTS, ROUTES AND TRACKS (987c SI Combo models only) W aypoints are stored positions that allow you t o mark areas of int erest or navigation points. Y our 900 Series™ can store up to 3000 waypoin ts. Routes link two or more waypoin ts together to cr eate a path for navigation, and ar e used in trip planning.
Display the W aypoints Submenu: From any view , press the MENU key twice t o display the Main Menu System, then use the RIGHT Cursor k ey to select the Navigation tab. Select Wa ypoints and press the RIGHT Cursor k ey to display the W aypoints submenu.

46 THE ME NU S YS TEM The menu system is divided int o easy-to-use menu modules. The main components of the menu system are: Start-Up Options Menu: Press the MENU key during the power up sequence t o view the Start -Up Options menu. See Star t -Up Options Menu .
T otal Screen Update: when you change any menu set tings that affect the Sonar View , the view will update immediately (i.e. you don ’t have to exit the menu to apply the change to the scr een). S T ART -UP OPTIONS M ENU Press the MENU key when the Title screen is displayed t o access the Star t -Up Options menu.
48 NORMAL OPERA TION Use Normal operation for on the water operation with a transducer connected. In addition, your 900 Series™ uses advanced transducer detection methods to det ermine if a transducer is connected.
AC CESSORY TES T Accessory T est lists the accessories connected to the system. NO TE: The speed accessor y will be detected only if the paddlewheel has moved since your 900 Series™ was powered up.
50 SONAR X -PRESS™ M ENU The Sonar X -Press™ Menu provides access t o the set tings most frequently used. Press the MENU key once while in any of the Sonar Views t o access the Sonar X -Press™ Menu. NO TE: Menu choices will vary depending on system set tings such as whether the unit is set for Advanced User mode.
SENSITIVITY Sensitivity contr ols how much detail is shown on the display . Increasing the sensitivity shows more sonar returns from small baitfish and suspended debris in the water; however , the display may become too clut tered.
52 LOW ER RANGE Lower Range sets the deepest depth range that will be displayed. Automatic is the default set ting. When in automatic mode, the lower range will be adjusted by the unit to f ollow the bot tom. Selecting a specific setting locks the depth range int o Manual mode.
BOTT OM LOCK (Sonar Zoom View only) Bott om Lock changes the mode of the Z oomed view in the Sonar Zoom View . T o turn on Bot t om L ock: 1. In the Sonar Zoom View , highlight Bot tom L ock on the Sonar X -Press™ Menu. 2. Use the LEFT or RIGHT 4-W A Y Cursor Contr ol keys to change the Bot tom Loc k set ting to on.
54 SIDE IMAGING X-PRESS™ MENU (Side Imaging Views only) The Side Imaging X -Press™ Menu provides access to the set tings most frequently-used. Press the MENU key once while in any of the Sonar Views to access the Side Imaging X -Press™ Menu.
SI SIDE SI Side sets which transducer beam from the SI beams will be shown on the display . T o Adjust SI Side: 1. Highlight SI Side on the Side Imaging X -Press™ Menu.
56 SI C OLORS SI Colors allows you t o select which color palet te you would like t o use for the display . T o c hang e the SI C olors: 1. Highlight SI C olors on the Side Imaging X -Press™menu. 2. Use the LEFT or RIGHT 4-W A Y Cursor Control k eys to c hange the color palet te.
ACTIVE SIDE Active Side allows you to select which side of a Combo View will be active; ke y presses will only aff ec t the active side of the screen. When a menu is displayed, the non-active side of the screen will be grayed out; at any other time, a green arrow will point t o the ac tive side.
58 SA VE CU RRENT ROUTE (Only when navigating) Save Current Rout e allows you to save the curren t route being displayed. This menu choice will only appear when you are curren tly navigating a route. T o Sa v e C urr en t R oute: 1. Highlight Save Current Rout e on the Navigation X-Press™ Menu.
REMOVE GRID (Only if a Grid is active) Remov e Grid removes the waypoint grid fr om the display . This menu choice will only appear when a grid has already been applied to a waypoin t. T o R emo v e a Grid: 1. Highlight Remove Grid on the Navigation X -Press™ Menu.
60 BEAM SELECT Beam Select sets which sonar returns from the transducer will be displayed on the screen. When set to 200 /50 kHz , the returns from both beams are blended. The Split Sonar View continues t o display the sonar returns from eac h beam in their respective windows.
When Fish ID+™ is turned off , the 900 Series™ shows only the raw sonar returns on the display . These returns will often result in "arches" f orming on the display , indicating potential targets.

50 KHZ SENSITIVITY (Advanced) 50 kHz Sensitivity changes the sensitivity of the 50 kHz beam. Increasing the 50 kHz Sensitivity will display additional weak returns and decreasing the 50 kHz Sensitivity will display fewer weak returns.
64 MAX DEPTH (Advanced) Max Depth adjusts the maximum depth of operation. The performance of your 900 Series™ can be tuned to the maximum depth you will be fishing in by set ting the Max Depth. When a maximum depth is set, your 900 Series™ will not at tempt to acquir e sonar data below that depth, thus increasing overall performance.

68 TRACK MIN DIS T ANCE (Advanced) T rack Min Distance allows you to set a minimum distance of travel bef ore a trac kpoint is added to the trac k. NO TE: T rack Min Distance works in conjunction with T rackpoint Int erval. Both conditions must be met before a trackpoin t is added to the current trac k.

SET MAP OFFSET (Advanced) Set Map Offset allows you to change the map of fset used by the 900 Series™. NO TE: The Map Offset will be applied to all maps and not just the map that requires the correction. The Map Offset should be cleared if a differen t map is to be used.
72 DEPTH ALARM Depth Alarm sounds when the depth becomes equal to or less than the menu set ting. T o c hang e the Depth Alarm set ting: 1. Highlight Depth Alarm on the Alarms main menu. 2. Use the LEFT or RIGHT 4-W A Y Cursor Control k eys to change the Depth Alarm set ting.
OFF C OURSE ALARM (987c SI Combo Models only) Off Course Alarm sounds when the boat has moved t oo far off c ourse based on the menu set ting when navigating. O f f Course Alarm allows you t o set how far the boat is allowed to move of f course before the Off Course Alarm will sound.
74 ALARM T ONE Alarm T one selects the pitch of the alarm sound. A brief tone will be produced as you adjust the Alarm T one so that you can select the tone that you can hear best. T o c hang e the Alarm T one set ting: 1. Highlight Alarm T one on the Alarms main menu.
UN ITS - DEPTH Units - Depth selects the units of measure for all depth-related r eadouts. T o c hang e the Units - Depth set ting: 1. Highlight Units - Depth on the Setup menu. 2. Use the LEFT or RIGHT 4-W A Y Cursor Contr ol keys to change the Units - Depth set ting.
76 USER MODE User Mode sets the menu system t o either Normal or Advanced. When set to Normal, only the basic menu options ar e shown. When set to Advanced (default set ting), additional menu choices are available. T o c hang e the User Mode set ting: 1.
SELECT READOUTS (Advanced) Select Readouts allows you to customize the inf ormation displayed in individual digital readouts on the left side of many views, including suppressing a particular readout so that nothing is displayed; the ability to customize r eadouts depends on the view and whether you are navigating.
78 . T o Select Readouts: 1. Make sure you ar e in Advanced User Mode, then highlight Select Readouts on the Setup main menu. 2. Use the RIGHT 4-W A Y Cursor Control k ey to initiate this procedure. 3. The Select Readouts submenu will appear , showing a list of all Readouts.
SPEE D CALIBRA TION (Advanced, Speed P addlewheel only) Speed Calibration will adjust the speed readout by the percentage en tered, and will appear in the menu if a Speed Accessory is connected and the paddlewheel has moved at least once, when the unit is in Advanced User Mode (see Setup Menu T ab: User Mode .
80 TIME FORMA T (Advanced, 987c SI Combo models, International only) Time Format changes the time format used by the unit This menu c hoice is available only when in Advanced User Mode (see Setup Menu T ab: User Mode.
SONAR (987c SI Combo models only) Sonar deactivates Sonar and removes the Sonar Views from the view rotation. T o turn Sonar on or off: 1. Highlight Sonar on the Setup menu. 2. Use the LEFT or RIGHT 4-W A Y Cursor Con trol keys to c hange the Sonar to On or Off (Off , On, Default = On).
82 AC CESSORI ES MEN U T AB From any view , press the MENU key twice to access the tabbed Main Menu Syst em, then press the RIGHT cursor key un til the Accessories tab is selected. If no accessories are at tached to the Accessory Bus, no menu choices will appear under the Accessories tab .
DISPLA Y PROBLEMS There are several main conditions or sources of possible in terference that may cause problems with the quality of the inf ormation displayed on the control head. Look in the following table for some s ymptoms of display problems and possible solutions: Problem Possible Cause The control head loses power at high speeds.
84 FIN DING TH E CAUSE OF NOISE Electrical noise usually affects the display with many blac k dots at high speeds, and high sensitivity readings. One or mor e of the following sources can cause noise .
