Enables/disab les target lock. Chooses training range . f or full circle 360 (horizontal mode) or half circle 180 (v er tical scan mode).

2. HORI ZONT AL MO DE 2-3 2.3 Choosing the Range The [RANGE] control chooses the detection (di splay) range. Cho ose the range according to either the f ish species being searched or the dept h desired. 15 ranges are ava ilable. SEA SURFACE Range indicated on the screen.
2. HORI ZONT AL MO DE 2-4 2.4 Choosing Sector W id th Sector means t he w idth of the t ransducer training. The [SECTOR] control chooses the training (dis play) area am ong the sixteen positions sho wn in the table below . Clockwise rotation of the cont rol increases the sector width; counterclock wise rotation decreases it.
2. HORI ZONT AL MO DE 2-5 2.5 Choosing T rain Center The [TRAI N] control chooses the center direct ion of the detection range. The range of adjustm ent is 0 ° to 354 ° in increments of 6 ° . The chosen bearing is shown with a f illed circle, the tr ain indicator , on the bearing scale.
2. HORI ZONT AL MO DE 2-6 2.6 Choosing the T ilt A ngle 2.6.1 Choosi ng the tilt angle The tilt angle sho ws the direction t o which the sound wave is em itted. W hen the sound wave is emitt ed horizontally , the tilt angle is sai d to be 0 ° and when emit ted vertically , 90 ° .

2. HORI ZONT AL MO DE 2-8 Point s t o cons ider • Norm ally , a vertically dist ributed fish school is a bet ter sonar target than the bot tom, because it ref lects the transmitt ed pulse back toward the transducer . • In case 3, both fish schools “a” and “b” are presented.
2. HORI ZONT AL MO DE 2-9 2.6.4 Suit able tilt angle The figure belo w illustrates t he relationship am ong tilt angle, depth an d detection rang e. Refer t o it to find out the suitable tilt angle for a given depth/ detection range.

2. HORI ZONT AL MO DE 2-13 2.1 1 Adjusting the Picture 2.1 1.1 Suppressi ng bottom and surface reflections In shallow fishing groun ds, excessive sea surface and bot tom reflect ions often interfere with wanted f ish echoes and they cannot be eli minat ed sufficiently with the TVG controls.
2. HORI ZONT AL MO DE 2-14 2.1 1.2 Suppressi ng bottom t ail As described earlier , fish schools near the botto m are sometimes difficult to detect because you have to di scriminate f ish echoes from the bottom reflections.

2. HORI ZONT AL MO DE 2-19 2.12 T arg et L ock Three types of target lock modes are available. Ma nual rev ers e: The transducer train dir ection is reserved m anually . This is the def ault target lock function set ting and it may be used i n both horizontal and vertical scan modes.
2. HORI ZO NT AL MO DE 2-20 2.12.3 Position mode This mode t racks a stationary position (such as a reef ) using position da ta f ed from a navigator .
2. HORI ZONT AL MO DE 2-21 2.12.4 Echo mode The echo mode t racks a fish school, eit her automatically or m anually . The def ault setting is automat ic, and you can choose autom atic or manual w ith “LOCK MO DE” in the HORZ menu.
2. HORI ZONT AL MO DE 2-22 W hen the fish echo is lost the tilt angle is aut omatically chan ged as below to continu e tracking the echo: Tilt changed to search [(A + 10 ° ) → (A - 10 ° ) → A] Detection area displayed once again and target lock indicator lights.

2. HORI ZONT AL MO DE 2-24 CLUT T ER: Low intensit y echoes, often caused by sedim ents in water , are painted on the screen as a large num ber or random dots. This noise can be suppressed. The higher the number (sett ing) the weaker the echoes which are erased.

HORI ZONT AL MO DE 2-25 2.14 Interpreting the Ho rizont al D isplay This section provides inf ormation necessary f or interpreting the horizon tal display . 2.14.1 How the horiz ont al mode picture is p a inted As shown below , the se arch beam is em itted from the soundom e at a certain tilt angle.
2. HORI ZONT AL MO DE 2-26 2.14.2 Sample echo display s Bottom echoes W hen the tilt angle is changed, t he bottom echo illustrated bel ow will appear on the disp lay . W hen the tilt is decreased (toward 0 ° ), the bott om trace becomes wider and weaker .
2. HORI ZONT AL MO DE 2-27 Fish schools A fish school appears a s a mass of echoes on the screen. The color of the mass shows the density of fish schools on the sonar beam . T o f ind distribution and cent er point of a fish school, try several diff erent tilt angles.

HORI ZONT AL MO DE 2-28 Sea surface refl ections T o reduce sea surf ace reflections, set the tilt angle to 5 ° or lo wer , so the upper edge of the sonar beam does not hit the sea surf ace, or adjust TVG . W hen a decreased tilt angle is used, sea surf ace reflections cover a large area as illustrated belo w .
2. HORI ZONT AL MO DE 2-29 Sidelobe echo (false echo) An ultrasonic wave is e mitted in t he direction set by the [T IL T] control (main beam) , however there are some em issions outside the m ain beam.

3. VER TIC AL SC AN MO DE 3-5 The displays are indepe ndent of each other so you can adjust them as desired. Press the [MAIN/SUB] key to choose the window to adjust. Each press of the key momentarily displays MAIN W INDOW C ONTROLLABLE or SUB W INDO W CONTROLLABLE at the top of the screen t o let you know which window may be adjusted.

Choose t he range according to eith er the fish species bein g searched or the depth desired. Each t ime the control is operated t he newly chosen rang e briefly appears in large characters at the screen top.

The setting range is 0 ° to 18 0 ° in increm ents o f 6 ° . Choose the sett ing which places the sect or center in the m iddle of the detection ran ge.

3. VE R TICAL SCAN MODE 3-14 3.1 1.2 Suppressi ng noise and interference Y o u may encounter occ asional or interm ittent noise and interf erence as sho wn below . This is mostly caused by ele ctrical equipm ent, engine, propeller noise f rom own ship, or noise from other sonars being operated nearby .
3. VER TIC AL SC AN MO DE 3-15 3.1 1.4 Resolution color RES. COLOR sets transfer characteristics of input signal level versus displa y echo level. Echo strength is em phasized in order of CUBE, SQUARE, LINEAR, LOG . Y ou can se e the characteristics of each by watching the color bar as you change the se tting.

4. ECHO SOU NDER M ODE 4-5 4.7 Measuring Range b y Cursor Use the cursor to displa y the range from o w n ship t o the cursor location. Use the Omnipad to place the cursor wher e desired. The range to the cursor appears at the upper lef t-hand corner of the screen.

I t is useful for estim ating the kind of f ish school and bottom composition.

5. MENU OPERA TION 5-3 5.3 Short-cut Menu , Preset Menu These m enus program the CUSTOM M ODE keys [ 1], [2] and [ 3]. The menu to use may be chosen with CUSTOM KEY on the SYSTEM SETTING 1 menu. Short-cut ke y: One-touc h activation of the operator-selected dia log box.
