2 Chapter 1 Connecting Introduction to Digital Television TV used to be simple: a handful of channels , no color, no stereo sound, no choices. All you needed was an antenna and a TV. The ante nna captured pictures and sounds and sen t them to your TV over a wire.
3 1 Before You Begin Before You Begin Make sure that all of your equipment is turned off and th e HD DVR is unplugged. C onnecting Y our HD D VR to a Phone Line Your DIRECTV HD DVR needs to be connected to a standard analog phone jack for DVR service and pay per view functionality.
4 Chapter 1 Connecting Sa tel li te D ish An ten nas an d L N Bs Satellite dish antennas come in two shap es, Round and Oval. A Round dish receives signals from one satellite (Sat A), while an Oval dish can rece ive signals from two or three satellites (Sat A, Sat B, and Sat C).
5 1 Before You Begin C aring for y our DIRECT V HD DVR Moving y our HD DVR. To prevent damage to sensitive component s such as the hard disk drive, ALWAYS unplug your HD DVR, th en WAIT a moment for the hard disk to stop spinning bef ore moving it.
6 Chapter 1 Connecting Useful Terms If you’re not an audio/video wizard, you may find yoursel f stumbling over some of the names, features, and functions of various pieces of equipment. Here’s a quick refe rence to help you understan d some of the terms y ou may encounter during installation.
7 1 Useful Terms Video , Audio, and Electr onics Equipmen t T erms HD TV Rec eiver. A high-definition television receiver decodes high-defini tion, enhanced- definition, and standard-definitio n video signals for display on your TV. Your HD DVR combines an HDTV receiver with a satelli te receiver and a digital video recorder.
8 Chapter 1 Connecting A/V Receiver . An A/V receiver is the hub of a hom e theater system. It allows you to connect multiple audio and video devices and manage the signal from each device. With it you can switch easily b etween watching TV, viewing vi deo from your DVD player, or running your game system , by changing the input source.
9 1 Cables and Accessories Cables and Accessories In addition to your TV and the equipment that shipped wi th you r DIRECTV HD DVR (shown below), you’ll need a satellite di sh antenna, an off-air an.
10 Chapter 1 Connecting Choosing Audio and V ide o C ables Your DIRECTV HD DVR can output either standard, enhan ced, or high-definition video signals, and either analog or digital audio si gnals.
11 1 Cables and Accessories The C omponent Video cable ( , supplied) provides excellent video quality by separating the video signal into three components, lumi nance (Y) and two color difference signals (Pb, Pr). You will need to connect a separate cable for audio.
12 Chapter 1 Connecting Setup Options On the back of your equip ment you will find several jacks. Som e are labeled IN and some are labeled OUT. The pictures and sound enter a piece of equipment through cables connected to IN jacks and leave thr ough cables connected to OUT jacks.
13 1 Setup Options Adding Other Components You probably hav e other audio/video comp onents in addition to your H D DVR and TV. These might include a VCR, DVD recorder, DVD player, game consol e, and/or a cable box. Some of these devices connect to your HD DVR, while others work independently, with no connection to the HD DVR.

Us e the best conn ections available on you r equipment. This setup inclu des a high-definit ion digital video connection to a DVI-compatible T V, and a digital au dio connection to an A/V receiver.
15 1 Setup Options (Optional) Connect the Coaxi al RF cable from your off-air antenna to the HD DVR’s Antenn a RF In jack. (If you don’t have an off-air anten na, you can skip this step.) Connect the Coaxial RF cables from your satellite dish ant enna to the jacks labeled Satel lite In 1 and Sat ellit e In 2 on the back of the HD DVR.

19 1 Setup Options If your VCR or DVD recorder is already connected to your TV or A/V receiver for watching video tapes or DVDs, do not disconnect it. All you need to do to save recordings from your HD DVR is to connect standard a udio and vid eo from the HD DVR’s outputs to the inputs on yo ur VCR or DVD recorder.

22 Chapter 2 Guided Setup Welcome! Now that you have fini shed connecting your DIRECTV ® HD DV R, you are ready to begin Guided Setup. When you first plug in the HD DVR, you will see gray screens which display its progress as it starts up. After a few minutes, you will see the Welcome screen, which marks the start of Guided Setup.
23 2 Satellite Dish Guided Setup Satellite Dish Guided Setup Satellite Dish Guided Setup tells the HD DVR wh at type of satellite dish antenna you are using, so you must go throug h it at least on ce, even if you are re placing a DIRECTV DVR that was already working.
24 Chapter 2 Guided Setup ZIP C ode. Use the num ber keys on your remote control to en ter your ZIP code. The HD DVR uses your ZIP code to determine the dire ction y our satellite dish antenna sho uld point. It also sets your primary network area for off-air channel recep tion.
25 2 Satellite Dish Guided Setup • To change the currently selected transpo nder, use the UP arrow to highlight the transponder number. Press the RIGHT or LEFT arrow to change th e transponder. It is best if each transponder ha s a signal strength above 60.

31 2 Off-Air Channels and Video Setup What's the diff erenc e between 1080i, 720p, 480p, and 48 0i? These are names for different video resolution formats. Each name includes a number and a letter. The number indicates how many horizontal lines of informati on make up a single video image.

38 Chapter 3 The Basics in 5 Short Tours T our 1: Play w ith Live TV In this tour, you’ll take a look at how you can control live TV. So grab your rem ote and press the LIVE TV button to go to live TV! First, press the PAUSE button—the progr am you’re watchin g pauses.
39 3 Tour 1: Play with Live TV Statu s Bar Press PAUSE or PLAY to see the status ba r. It shows a one-hour period. The green segment is the portion of the current hour that has been saved by your DIRECTV ® HD DVR. The right edge of the green pa rt is always the current time.

51 4 Season Pass, Recording Options, To Do List • Par enta l C ontrol s. If Parental Controls are on when you schedul e a repeating recording, the HD DVR checks its current pr ogram information to see if any upcoming program violates a Parental Control.
52 Chapter 4 Pick Programs to Record Reco rdin g Op tio ns include: • Keep At Most. This option sets the maxim um number of episodes to be saved —useful for keeping only the most r ecent nightly news or only a few of your kids’ daily programs. The default setting is 5.
53 4 Season Pass, Recording Options, To Do List Season P ass Mana ger With dual tuner, you can record two programs at the same time. Conflicts wil l occur only if you try to schedule a third recording that overlaps the other two. By default, the olde st Season Pass has the greatest pr iority.

To view it, g o to DIRECTV Central, then Pick Programs to Record , then To Do List. Individual recordings are mark ed with a single checkma rk ( ) to the left of the program title.
55 4 Season Pass, Recording Options, To Do List View Re cor di ng History This is an advanced feature in the To Do Li st for those who really want all the details. Selecting this option takes you to a list of three typ es of programs: Deleted. To find programs that were deleted, press the UP arrow or CHAN UP.
56 Chapter 4 Pick Programs to Record Using the Guide to Find Programs The DIRECTV Advanced Program Guide ™ displays up to two weeks of TV programmin g at the touch of a button. You can use the guide to quickly fin d programs and set up recordings by customizing the channels and fi ltering the types of programs shown in the guide.

In addition, if a channel has no programs in the selected cat egory within six hours of the time on the guide, th e guide will not show that channel. 61 4 Find Your Favorite Programs Manually Recor d Time/ Channel. Manually Record Time/Channel lets you schedule a recording on a specific channel at a specific time, just as you would with a VCR. You can also create a manual repeating recording for ev ery week, every day, or every weekday.

65 4 Find Programs That Match Your Interests Key word or Title W ishList. You can create a Keyword WishList with one keyword or with several. If you enter more than one keyw ord, the WishList only finds programs that match all of your keywords.

70 Chapter 5 Watching Live TV and Recorded Programs Using the Control Buttons Part of the fun of watching programs with your DIRECTV ® HD DVR is using th e pause, instant replay, and slow motio n features. Here’s an overview of the control buttons: REC ORD .
71 5 Status Bar Status Bar When you press PLAY, PAUSE, FORWARD or BACK, the status bar a ppears on the lower part of your screen. In live TV, the statu s bar represents one hour (notice the white tick marks every 15 minutes). In recorded pr ograms, the bar shows the program’s length.
72 Chapter 5 Watching Live TV and Recorded Programs Channel Banner The channel banner appears at the top of the screen when you change channels or press INFO, THUMBS UP or THUMBS DOWN, or the RIGHT arrow during a program. It disappears after a few seconds.
73 5 Watching Live TV Wa t ch i n g L i v e T V When you’re watching a program as it’s broadcas t, you’re watc hing live TV. To go to live TV at any time, press the LIVE TV button on your rem ote. You can also select Watch Live TV from DIRECTV Cen tral.

76 Chapter 5 Watching Live TV and Recorded Programs Watching Programs from Now Playing All programs recorded on your DIRECTV ® HD DVR are listed in the Now Playing List (no more searching th rough unlabeled videotap es!). To go to the Now Playin g List, press the DIRECTV button on yo ur remote control twice, or press the LIST button.
77 5 Watching Programs from Now Playing If you have given a program a Thumb rating, Thumbs Up/Th umbs Do wn icons appear at the top of the Program Inform ation screen. You can change the rating here by pressing THUMBS UP or THUMBS DOWN. Ratings and Ad visories.
78 Chapter 5 Watching Live TV and Recorded Programs Watching High-Definition Programs High-definition television is di fferent, and not just becaus e it delivers the highest quality all-digital pictures and sound available today.
79 5 Watching High-Definition Programs • Use the RATIO button to change your “TV Aspect Correction” se tting. Press RATIO once to display the current set tin g, and again to change it. Th is setting either stretches the picture, or adds panels to the picture, to fill the entire screen.
80 Chapter 5 Watching Live TV and Recorded Programs Finding High-Definition Pr ograms There are many ways to find high-definition prog rams to watch and record. • Filter the program guide. See page 41 for more about filtering the guide. • Check out HD programming from DIRECTV.
81 5 Save to VCR Save to VCR If you have a VCR, you can save a program from the Now Playing List to a videotape. Save to VCR happens in real time, so if a pr ogram is two hours long, it will take two hours to save it. You will not be able to watch live TV or recordings while saving.
82 Chapter 5 Watching Live TV and Recorded Programs Music Channels Some DIRECTV ® channels feature continuous music. You can tune to a music channel just as you wo uld any other channel. You can not record music channels or use special features—such as pause or rewind—on a music chan nel.

84 Chapter 6 Messages and Setup Messages from DIRECTV From time to tim e DIRECTV may send you me ssages abou t updates to your service and other important notices. These m essages are im portant, useful and easy to find—we mad e them that way because we really want you to read them .
85 6 Purchases Purchases The Purchases screen displays a list of all pay per view programs you have purchased, along with their date and time. To see the Purchases screen, press the DIRECTV button to go to DIRECTV Central. Select Messages & Set up, then Purchases.
86 Chapter 6 Messages and Setup Pay Pe r Vie w Your DIRECTV ® HD DVR makes buying and recordi ng pay per view events a snap. You can order them when they are promoted on live TV, or d uring a search for programs. You can order them to watch, or to be record ed.
87 6 Purchases The pay per view Program Information screen gives you the followi ng options: • Purchase & record info. If the HD DVR does not have purchase info rmation (such as the price of the pay per view event) immediately available, it can do a quick check to retrieve it.
88 Chapter 6 Messages and Setup • View upcoming showings. Press SELECT to display a list of upcoming showings for the program. Highlighti ng one of these showings and pre ssing SELECT displays the Program Informatio n screen for that showing. LEFT arrow fr om the list returns to the previous screen.
89 6 Settings Settings With the selections in Settings, you can customize the HD DVR to work more to your liking. To view th e available options, go to DIRECTV Central and select Messages & Setup, then Settings. Audio Alternat e Audio. Some programs have alternate audio tracks available, including other language tracks.
90 Chapter 6 Messages and Setup Channels Channel B anner. When you change channels or pr ess the RIGHT arrow while watching live TV, the channel banner displays, then di sappears after a few seco nds. If you want the channel banner to disappear quickly, select “Clear banner qu ickly.
91 6 Settings Off-Air Ch annels. If you selected “Satellite and off- air antenna” as your prog ram source during Guided Setup, your H D DVR is already se t up to receive digital broadcasts from an off-air antenna. In this case, you may not ever need to use the settings available here.

96 Chapter 6 Messages and Setup Phone The HD DVR makes periodic connections to DIRECTV and to the DVR service, using a standard telephone line. These brief phone calls ensure that your HD DVR receives updates to the DVR service, content for Showcases, and pay per v iew functionality.
97 6 Settings four hours, the Update Numbers screen appears. Press SELECT to connect to the DVR service to retrieve the most current list of dial-in numbers fo r th at area code. After the call completes, press SELECT. The Dial-I n Number screen appears.

If you have call waiting, you may choose to disable it while the HD DVR is makin g a call, so that the HD DVR’s p hone call is not interrupted. If y ou do not disable it, the HD DVR may drop th e call and allow the second call to ring through , depending on your phone system.
99 6 Settings Remo te C on trol You can program your remot e to control po wer, mu ting and volume on your TV or A/V Receiver. You can also use your HD DVR remote to chan ge inputs on your TV. See “Programming the Remote Control” on page 109 for instructions.
100 Chapter 6 Messages and Setup To change the transponder, use the UP arro w to highlight the transponder number. Press the RIGHT or LEFT arrow to change the tr ansponder number. It is best if each transponder has a signal strength above 60. If your signal stren gth is low, see “Satellite Signal Troubleshooting,” on page 26.
