2 Before Us ing the Ma chine Before Using the Machine Operation Panel (1) ON/OFF but ton T urns the machine on and off. Before t u rning on t he machine, make sure the Document Cover is closed. (2) MEMORY CARD button Switches the machine to the memory card mode.

4 Before Us ing the Ma chine How to Navigate Menus on the LCD Y ou can make good use of the various functions of the m achine with the menu screen and the settings screen on the LCD. This section describes how to use t he menu sc reen and the settings s creen.

6 Before Us ing the Ma chine Basic Operation on the Settings Screen Y ou can change the print settings such as p age si ze, m edia type, bordered or borderless print, etc. on t he settings screen either in the c opy mode, in the memory card m ode, or when printing directly from a PictBridge compliant device.

16 Before Us ing the Ma chine 2 Prepare to load p aper . (1) Open the Paper Support, then pull out the Paper Support Extension. (2) Open the Paper Output T ray . (3) Open the Output T r ay Extension. (4) Adjust the position of the Paper Thickness Lever .
17 Before Using the Mac hine Loading Envelopes Use either European DL or US Comm. Env . #10-size d envelope. 1 Prepare the envel opes. z Press down on all four corners and edges of the env elopes to flatten them. z If the envelopes are curled, hold the opposite corners and gently twist them in the opposite direction.
18 Before Us ing the Ma chine 2 Load t he envelope s. (1) Load the envelope against the right side of the Rear T ray . Load with the address side facing UP and the rear flap s DOWN on the left. Up to 10 envelopes can be loaded at once. (2) Pinch the Paper Guide and slide it against the left side of the envelope.
19 Before Using the Mac hine Loading Sma ll-Sized Paper Y ou can use 4" x 6" / 101.6 x 152. 4 mm, 5" x 7" / 127.0 x 177.8 mm, and Credi t card-sized papers. 1 Load t he paper . (1) Load the small-sized paper against the right side of the Rear T ray with the print side facing UP .
20 Copyin g Copyin g Making Copies This section describes the basic procedure to make copies. 1 T urn on the machine . See “Turning the Machine O n and Off” on page 8. 2 Press the COPY button to select the copy m ode if ano ther mode has been sele cted.
21 Copying Ta b 1 Y ou can specify t he paper settings for printing or image quality . (1) Page size Select the page size of t he loaded paper . (2) Media type Select the media type of the l oaded paper . (3) Print quality Adjust print quality according to the original.

If you are scanning printed text, you can use the OCR (Optical Character Recognition) software to convert it to t ext data.
32 Prin ting Photo graphs Dir ectly from a Compliant D evice Printing Photo graphs Directly from a Compliant De vice Y ou can connect a PictBridge com pliant device such as a digital camera, camcor der , or mob ile phone using a U SB cable recommended by t he device’ s m anufacturer , and print recorded images directly without using a computer .
33 Printing Photogra phs Directly from a Compl iant Device 2 Connect th e PictBridg e compliant device to th e machine. (1) Make sure that the PictBridge comp liant device is turned off. (2) Connect the PictBridge compliant device to the machine using a USB cable recommended by the manufacturer of the device.
34 Prin ting Photo graphs Dir ectly from a Compliant D evice About PictBrid ge Print Settings Settings on a PictBridge Compliant Device This sec tion describes the print s ettings on a PictBridge compliant device. When operating the device, be sure to follow the instructions given in the instruction manual of your PictBridge compliant device.
35 Printing Photogra phs Directly from a Compl iant Device z Layout Setting V arious layout options are available. z Bordered/Border less: Y o u can select whether or not to print an image with a border . z N-up: Y ou can use this option when printing on sticker paper , or A4- or Letter-sized paper .

37 Printing Photogra phs Directly from a Compl iant Device * Set th e ite ms in th is co lum n to Default on the PictBridge compliant device when you want to make settings on the machine. Red eye correction Corrects red eyes in portraits caused by flash photography .
38 Routine Mai ntenance Rou tine Main tenanc e When Printing Becomes Faint or Colors Are Incorrect When printing becomes faint or colors are incorr ect, the print head nozzles on FINE Cartridges are probably clogged. Print the nozzle check pattern to confirm the condition o f the nozzles and then perform Print Head Cleaning.
39 Routine Mai ntenance Printing the Nozzle C heck Pattern Print the nozzle check pattern to det ermine whet her the ink ejects properly from the print head nozzles. 1 Make su re that the machine is turned on, then load a sheet o f A4 or Lette r-sized plain p aper in t he Rear T ray .
40 Routine Mai ntenance Examining the Nozzle Check Pattern Examine the noz zle check pattern, and perform cleaning if necess ary . 1 Check the nozzle check p attern you printed. (1) Check if lines in this pattern are missing. (A) Good (B) Lines are missing (2) Check if there are white streaks in this pattern.
41 Routine Mai ntenance z If Lines A re Missing or White S treaks Are Present (1) Select Also B and press the OK button. The cleaning confirma tion screen is displayed. (2) Select Ye s and press t he OK button to st art Print Head Cleaning. See “Print Head Cleaning” on page 42.
42 Routine Mai ntenance Print Head Cleaning Clean the Print Head if lines are missing or if white streaks appear in the printed no zzle check pattern. Cleaning unclogs the nozzles and restores the print head condition. Note that cleaning the Print Head causes used ink to be absorbed in t he ink absorber .
43 Routine Mai ntenance Print Head Deep Cleaning If print quality does not improve by standard Pr int Head Cleaning, try Print Head Deep Cleaning, which is a more powerful process. Note tha t cl eaning the Print Head causes used ink to be absorbed in the ink absorber .
44 Routine Mai ntenance Alig ning the Print Head If ruled lines are pr inted misaligned or print results a re otherwise unsatisfact ory , adjust the print head position. 1 Make sure that the mach ine is turned on, the n load two sh eets of A4 or Letter-sized plain p aper in t he Rear T ray .
45 Routine Mai ntenance 4 Adjust the print head po sition. (1) Check the pri nted patte rns and use the [ or ] button to input the number of the pattern in column A t hat has the least noticeable streaks. (2) Repeat the procedure until you finish inputting the pattern number for column L, then p ress the OK button.
46 Routine Mai ntenance Repl aci ng a FIN E Cart ridg e This section ex plains the way to c onfirm t he ink status and the pr ocedure to replace FINE Cartridges. When ink runs out or other errors occur , an error message is displayed on the LCD t o inform you of the error .
47 Routine Mai ntenance Replacing FINE Cartridges When FINE Car tridges run out of ink, replace them using the following steps. Imp ortant Handling FINE Ca rtridges z Do not touch the ele ctrical con tacts or Print Head Nozzles on a F INE Cartridge.
48 Routine Mai ntenance 1 Open the Paper Output T ray . 2 Make su re that the machine is turned on, lif t the Scann ing Unit (Prin ter Cover), th en pull the Scann ing Unit Support (A) down into place. The FINE Cartridge Holder moves to the left. 3 Remove the empty FINE Cartridge.
49 Routine Mai ntenance 4 Prepare the replacem ent FINE cart ridge. (1) Unpack a new FINE Cartridge and remove the orange protective tape (A) gently . 5 Insta ll the FINE Cartridge. (1) Insert a new FINE Cartridge all the way into the approp riate slot.
50 Routine Mai ntenance 6 Lift t he Scanni ng Unit (Pri nter Cover) slightly to set the Scanning Uni t Support b ack to its original position, an d then gen tly close t he Scannin g Unit (Printe r Cover). Caution Be sure to hold the Scanning Unit (Printer Cover) f irmly , and be careful not to get your fing ers caught .
51 Routine Mai ntenance Keeping the Best Printing Result s T o avoid dry ing of the Print Head a nd clogging of the nozzles, note the following. When Y o u T urn Off the M achine Follow the procedure below to turn of f the machine. (1) Press the ON/OFF butto n t o turn off the ma chine .
52 Routine Mai ntenance Cleaning Y our Machine This section describes the cleaning procedure t hat is needed to maintain your machine. Cleanin g the Exter ior of the M achine Be sure to use a soft cloth such as eyeglass es cleaning cloth and wipe off dirt on the surface with it gently .
53 Routine Mai ntenance Cleaning the Paper Fe ed Roller (Roller cleaning) Clean the paper feed ro ller if paper is not fed properly . Cleaning the paper feed roller will wear the roller , so perform t his only when necessary . 1 Make su re that the machine is turned on, and th en remove an y pap er from the Rear T ray .
54 Routine Mai ntenance Cleaning the Insid e of the Mach ine (Bottom plat e cleaning) This section describes how to clean the inside of the machine. If the inside of the machine becomes dirty , printed paper may get dirty , so we recommend performing cleaning regularly .
55 Routine Mai ntenance Cleanin g the Protru sions Insi de the Ma chine If protrusions inside the m achine are stained, wipe of f any ink from the protru sions using a cotton swab or the like. Caution Be sure to turn off th e power and disconn ec t th e power c ord bef ore cleaning the mac hine.

58 Trou bleshoot ing LCD Ca nnot Be Seen A t All An Unintended Language Is Displayed on the LCD The ink absorber is almost full. Press [OK] to continue printing. Contact the service center . The machine has a built-in ink absorber to hold the ink used during Print Head Cleaning, for example.
59 Trouble shooting Cannot Inst all the MP Drivers Cause Act ion Unable to proceed beyond the Printer Connection screen. If you were unable to proceed beyond the Printer Connection scree n, follow the procedure below to reinstall the MP Drivers. (1) Click Ca ncel on the Printer Connection screen.
60 Trou bleshoot ing Cannot C onnect to Computer Properly Printing S peed Is Slow / U SB 2.0 Hi-Sp eed Connection Does Not Work “This de vice can perform fast er” Message Is Displayed Cause Act ion Y our system environment is not fully compatible with USB 2.
61 Trouble shooting Print Result s Not Satisfactory If the print result is not satisfact ory such as white streaks , misaligned lines, and uneven colors, confirm the paper and print quality settings first.
62 Trou bleshoot ing Colo rs Ar e Un clea r Printing Does Not S tart/Pr inting Is Blurred/Colors Are Wrong/S traight Lines Ar e Misaligne d Cause Act ion Color correction is not enabled. W hen printing photographs or other graphics, enabling color correction may improve color.
63 Trouble shooting White Streak s Printed Pa per Curls or Has Ink Blot s Printed Surface Is Scratched/Pap er Is Smudged Inappropriate Paper Thickness Lever setting. Adjust the po sition of the Pape r Thickness Lever acco rding to the type of paper you are printing on.
64 Trou bleshoot ing Inappropriate Paper Thickness Lever setting. Adjust the po sition of the Pape r Thickness Lever acco rding to the type of paper you are printing on. See “Paper Handling” on page 13. Depending on the printing content, the printing surface may bec ome scratched even for the types of paper to set the lever to the left.
65 Trouble shooting Colo rs Are Uneven or Streaked The Print Result Not Satisfactory When Copying If these do not resolve the problem, also see “P rint Results Not Satisfactory” on page 61. Printing Does Not St art Cause Act ion Print Head nozzles are clogged.
66 Trou bleshoot ing Paper Does Not Feed Properly The machine is not ready . Check if the Power lamp is lit green. If the Power lamp is off, turn the machine on. While the Power lamp is flashing green, the machin e is initializing. Wait until the Powe r lamp stops flashing and remains lit green.
67 Trouble shooting Paper Jams Cause Act ion Paper jammed in the Paper Output Slot or the Rear Tray . Remove the paper following the procedure below. (1) Slowly pull the paper out, either from the Rear Tray or from the Paper Output Slot, whichever is easier.
68 Trou bleshoot ing Error Mess age Appears on the Computer Screen Writing Error/Ou tput Error/Communication Erro r Cause Act ion The machine is not ready . Confirm that the Power lamp is lit green. If the Power lamp is off, turn the machine on. While the Power lamp is flashing green, the machin e is initializing.
