17 Recording remin der The camcorder counts from 1 to 10 seconds when you start recording. This is helpful t o a void scenes that are too sh ort. 25F progressive frame rate Select the 25F pro gressiv e frame rate ( 43) to give your recordings a cinemat ic look.
18 Preparations This chapter desc ribes basic oper ations, such as navi gating the menus, and first time settings to help you learn more about your camcorder . Charging the Battery Pack The camcorder can be powered with a battery pack or di rectly using the compact power adapter .
19 1 Disconnect the compac t power adapter from the camco rder. 2 Unplug the powe r cord from the power outlet and the compact power adapter . Slide in the direction of the arrow and hold it pressed down. Slide the battery pa ck down and then pull it out.
Preparations 20 3 Insert the battery holder . Point the wireless contro ller at the camcor der’ s remote sensor whe n you press the buttons. NOTES • The wireless contr oller may not work properly when the remote se nsor is situated under str ong light sources or direct sunlight.
21 Do not leave the viewfinder exposed to direct sunlight as it may melt (due to concentrati on of the light by the lens). Do not use tripods with fastening scr ews longer than 5.5 mm. Doing so may da mage the camcorder . Pow e r Sw i tc h In addition to turning the cam corder on and off, the switc h also toggles the camcorder’ s operating m ode.

27 NOTES About the LCD and viewfinder screen: The screens ar e produ ced using extremely high-precision m anuf acturing techniques, with more than 99.99% of the pixels operating to specifi cation. Less than 0.01% of the pixels may occasionally misfire or appear as black, r ed, blue or green do ts.
Preparations 28 IMPORT AN T • Make sure to initialize all memory cards before us ing them with this camcorder (7 3 ) . • Memory cards have fr ont and back sides that are not inter changeable . Insertin g a memory card facing the wrong direction can cause a malfunction of the camcorder .

Video 30 NOTES • About the Power S ave mode: To s a v e p o w e r when the camcorder is powered by a battery pack, the camcorder will automatically shut of f if left without any operations for 5 minutes ( 46). T o restore the power , turn the switch toward MODE and r elease it, or tur n the switch to and back to ON again .
31 Selecting the Recording Mode The camcor der offers 4 r ecording modes. Changing the recording mode will change the r ecording time available on the hard disk. Select HXP or XP mode for better movie quality; sel ect LP mo de fo r lo ng er rec ord in g ti me s.
Video 32 10x Optical Zoom Press the W side of the zoom lever to zoom out (wide a ngle). Press the T side to zoom in ( telephoto). Y ou ca n also change the zoom s peed ( 42).
33 NOTES • When you wake up the camcor der from standby mode, the following set tings will be changed automatically: - Manual focus r etur ns to automatic focus (AF). - Manual exposur e adjustment returns to automatic exposure. - Zoom position returns to full wide angle W .
Video 34 Playing Back the Vi deo 1 Move the / sw itch to (Movies). 2 T urn the switch to ON, then turn it toward MODE and release it to set the camcorder in PLA Y mode. The gr een PLA Y indicator will turn on. The scene index scr een appears after a few seco nds with the selection frame on the last ( most rece ntly record ed) scene.

37 Backing Up Video s Movies r ecorded with this camc order are saved to the built-in har d disk. Because sp ace on the hard disk is limited, make sur e to copy your movies to an external device and back them up on a regul ar basis. Recordings made with this camcor der can be backed up using the following methods.
Video 38 • The thumbnail shows a sti ll image from the first scene reco rded on that day . 39 • When deleting a scene fr om the playlist index screen, only one scene can be deleted at a time. On-Screen Displays (Data Code) The camcor der keeps a data code containing the date and time and other camera data (shutter speed, ape rture, etc.) r egistered at the time of recor ding.

43 Mode switch: P [O N ] , [ OFF] • The focus assi st function magnifies the image that appea rs at the center of the screen to help you focus manually . • Using the focu s assi st function will not aff ect the recordi ngs. The focus assist function will be cance lled when you start r ecording.
Video 44 Mode switch: P [A U T O ] , [ OFF ] The camcor der automatically reduces the background sound of wind when rec ord in g o utd oo rs . • The wind screen cannot be turned off when the mode switch is set to AUTO . • Some low-frequenc y sounds will be suppressed along with the sound of wind.
45 [NO], [YES] [NO], [YES] [INITIALIZE] , [COMPL.INIT .] , [CANCEL] Display Setu p (LCD Brightness, Lang uage, etc.) DISPLA Y SETUP Adjusts the brightness of the LCD screen. • Press or or use the control dial to adjust the brightness to your preference.
Video 46 [O N ] , [ OFF] The demonstration mode displays the camcorder ’ s main feature s. It starts automatically when the camc order is powered with the compact power adapter if you leave i t tur ned on for more than 5 minutes. • T o cancel the demo m ode once it has started, press a ny button or turn off the camcorder .
47 [R E S E T ] , [C O N T I N U O U S ] Select the image numberi ng method to be used on a new memory card. Images ar e automatically assigned consecutive i mage numbers from 0101 to 9900, and stored in folders containing up to 100 images. Folders are number e d from 101 to 998.
Video 48 [ 576i]: T o use the 576i specification (standard definition). [ 1080i]: T o use the full 1080i high definition sp ecification. • This setting will be unavailable whil e the camcorder is connected to an external device using the optional HTC-100 HDMI Cable.
49 Setting the 25p Cinema Mode Y ou can combine the [ CINE MODE] recor ding program and the [ PF25] frame rate to achiev e the 25p Cinema Mode, which will enhance the cinema tic lo ok of y ou r re co rdi ng s. POINTS TO CHECK Mode switch: P Set the recor ding program to [ CINE MODE], as described in the previous section.

51 Flexible Recording: Changing the Aperture and Shutter Speed Use the automatic exposure (AE) progra m or give priority to the exposur e value or the shutter speed. Use a high sh utter speed to record fast moving subjects or a slow shutte r speed to add motion blur , emphasizing the feel of movement.

Video 60 Creating a Playlist Create a pl aylist to play back only the scenes you prefer and in the order of your choice. Af ter you add scenes to the playlist, press to switch between the origin al scenes and the playlist. Adding Scenes to the Playlist Select [ALL SCENES (T HIS DA TE)] to add to the playlis t all scenes taken on a particular date.
61 NOTES The numbers at the bo ttom indicate the scene's original position (on the left) and the marker' s position (on the righ t). Initializing the Hard Disk Initializing erases a ll movies on the hard disk, allowing you fr ee up space for mo re re co rdi ngs .
62 Photos Refer to this chapter fo r details on shoo ting photos – from capturing and playing back images to printing them. T aking Photos 1 Move the / swit ch to (Still images). 2 T urn the switch to ON to set the camcor der in CAMERA mode. The red CAMERA indi cator will turn on.
63 Selecting Photo Size and Quality Still imag es are recorded on the memory card using JPEG compr ession. As a general rul e select a large r image size for higher quality .

Photos 66 Magnifying Photos during Playback During playback, still ima ges can be magnified up to 5 times. 1 Press the T si de of the zoom lever . • The image is magnif ied by 2 times and a frame appe ars indicating the position of the magnified area.
67 Flash Y ou can use the built-in flash to record still images in dark places. The flash features the red-eye reduction f unction. Options Default value 1 If the function gui de does not appear on screen, press to display it. 2 Press to select . • If does not appear on the function guide, repeatedly press to display it.
Photos 68 - During auto expo sure bracketing. - In the [ FIREWORKS] recording program. • The flash mode cannot be selected when the exposu re is locked. • W e recommend not us ing the flash while the optional Wide-converter or T ele-converter is attached; its shadow can appear on the screen.
69 FUNC. ( 23) 1P r e s s h a l f w a y to activate the autofocus. 2 Press fully and hold it pressed down. A series of stil l images will be recor ded as long as you hold the button pressed. Press , first halfway to activate the autofocus and then fully to record the still images.
Photos 70 FUNC. ( 23) NOTES In the [ FIREWORKS] recordi ng program the focus priori ty is automatically set to [ OFF]. Light Metering Mode The camcorder meas ures the light reflected from the su bject in order to calculate the opti mal exposure settings.

Photos 72 Press to capture the still image on the memo ry card. The still image i s recorded on the memory car d while the screen continues to show the v ideo recording. NOTES • The still image cannot be recorded simultaneo usly on the memo ry card while the digital zoom or a digital effect is activated.
73 FUNC. ( 23) [ PROTECT]: The image select ion screen a ppears. 1 Press or to select the still image you want to protec t. 2 Press to protect the still image. appears on the bottom bar and the image cannot be erased. Press again to cancel the imag e protection.
Photos 74 Printing Photos - Direct Print The camcorder can be connecte d to any PictBridge- compa tible printer . Y ou can mark in advance the still images you want to print and set the desired number of copies as a print order ( 78). Canon printers: SELPHY printers of the CP , DS and ES series and inkjet printers marked with the PictBridge lo go.
75 IMPORT AN T • If continues to flash (for more than 1 minute) or if does not appear , the camcorder is not corr ectly connect ed to the printer . In such case, disconnect the USB cable and turn off the camcorder and the printer . After a short while, tur n them on again, se t the camcorder to mode and restore the connection.
Photos 76 NOTES Print setting options and [DE F AUL T] settings vary dependi ng on the printer model. For details, refer to the printer’ s instruction man ual. Printing after Changing the Print Settings 1 If the function guide do es not appear on screen, press to display it.

External Connections 82 Standard Definition TV Sets Playback on a TV Screen This section explains how to play back scenes taken with this camcorder by connecting it to a TV . The quality of the pl ayback pictur e will vary depending on the connected TV and the type of connection us ed.
83 Playback 1 T urn on the camcorde r and the connected TV or VCR. On a TV : Select as the video input the same terminal to which you connected the camcor der . On a VCR: Set the input selector to the external video input (usually labeled LINE I N). 2 Start the pla yback of the movies ( 34) or still images ( 64).
External Connections 84 Copying your Recordings to an External Video Reco rder Y ou can copy your re co rdi ng s b y connecting the camc order to a VCR or a digital video device . Video output will be in standard definition, although the original scenes ar e in high definition.
85 PC Connection Diagram T ransferring Photos - Direct T ransfer With the supplied USB cable and software (on the DIGIT AL VIDEO Solution Disk CD-ROM) you can transfer st ill images to a comput er simply by pressing .
External Connections 86 4 Set the auto-launch setting. •S e e Starting Ca meraWindow (Windows) or Auto-downloading (Macintosh) in the Digital Video Software instruction manual (electronic version on PDF file). • The direct transfer menu appears on the camcor der screen and the button lights up.
87 When you select [ ALL IMAGES], [ NEW IMAGES] or [ TRANSFER ORDERS], all the relevant still i mages will be transferred to the computer in one batch and their t humbnails will be displayed on the computer . Press or to select a transfer option and press .
External Connections 88 T ransfer Orders Y ou can mark in advance the s till images you want to transfer to the computer as transfer orders. Y ou can set transfer orders for up to 998 still images. Selecting Still Images to T ransfer (T ransfer Order) Set the transfer orders before connecting the camcor der to the computer .

Additional Information 90 Recording/Playback Recording Problem Solution Buttons will not work. T urn on the camcorder . – Abnormal characters appear on the screen. The camcorder does not operate properly. Disconnect the power source and reconnect it after a short time.
91 Playback/Editing Pressing will not start recording. Set the camcorder to mode. 29 While a scene is being recorded on the hard disk, additional recording is not possible. – The hard disk is full. Delete some recordings or initialize the hard disk to free some space.
Additional Information 92 Playback on a Connected TV or Other Exter nal Device External device ref ers to DVD record ers, computers, and other digital devices . Memory Card Oper ation Cannot add scenes to the playlist. Y ou cannot add more than 999 scenes to the playlist.

Additional Information 94 COULD NOT ADD TO PLA YLIST Scene could not be added to the playlist. Y ou cannot add more than 999 scenes to the playlist. Delete some recordings. 38 TEMPERA TURE TOO HIGH CANNOT PLA Y BACK The camcorder has exceeded its operational temperature ( appears).
95 Direct Print Related Messages About Canon I nkjet/SELPHY DS Printers : If the printer’ s error indicator flashes or an err or message appears on the pr inter’ s operation panel, r efer to the printer’ s instruction manual. CARD ERROR A memory card error occurred.
Additional Information 96 PAPER JAM The paper jammed during printing. Select [STOP] to cancel printing. After removing the paper , set some paper again and retr y printing. INK ERROR There is a problem with the ink. Replace the ink cartridge. NO INK The ink cartridge is not inserted or is out of ink.
97 Do’s and Don’ts Camcorder Be sure to observe the following precautions to e nsure maximum performance. Make sure to also observe the precautions pertaining to the har d disk, as har d disk damage may r esult in permanent data loss. • Back up your recor dings periodically.
