Chapter 1 8 Data LED indic a tions 1 The Dat a LED (light emit ting diode) will f las h depending on the m a c h i ne’s status. LE D Mac hine Statu s Desc ripti on Ready M ode The mach ine is ready to pr int, in sleep m ode, there is no pr int data, or the po wer swi tch is off.

10 2 Loading pape r and print medi a 2 The m achine can feed paper from t he standard paper tray, optional lower tray or multi-purpose t r ay. When y ou put pape r into the paper t ray, note the following: If your a pplication sof t ware supports paper size selection on the print menu, you can select it through the software.

Chapter 2 12 d Put paper in t he tray and make su r e: The paper is below the maximum paper mark ( b b b ) (1). Over f i l ling the p aper tray w ill cause paper jams. The side to be pri n t ed on m ust be face down. The paper guides touch the sides of the pap er so it will f eed properly.
Loadi ng paper 13 2 b Pull out the MP tray support and unfold the flap (1). c Put paper in the MP tray and make sure: The paper stays under t he m a x i m u m paper mark (1). The pap er edge i s positioned between the arrows (2). The side to be pri nted on m ust be face up wit h the leading edge (top of the pa per) i n first .
Chapter 2 14 d Lift up the support flap to prevent paper from sl i ding off the face-down output tray, or remov e each pa ge as soon as it comes out of the machine. Printi ng on e nv elopes and thick pa pe r from the MP tr ay 2 Before loading , press the corners and sides of the envelopes to make them as flat as possible.
Loadi ng paper 15 2 c Lift up t h e supp ort flap to prevent envelopes and thick s heets of paper from sliding off the face down output tray. If t he support flap is cl os e d you should rem ove eac h envelope as soon as it comes out of the m achine. d Put up to 3 envelo pes or up t o 25 s he et s of thick paper (163 gsm) in the MP tray.
Chapter 2 16 e Open the back cover (Face-up output tra y). f Pull down the two grey levers, o ne on the left-hand side and one on the right- hand side, to the envelope position as shown in the il lus t ration bel ow. g Close the back c o v e r . h Send the print data to the machine.

Chapter 2 18 Paper setti ngs 2 Pape r Type 2 Set up the m achi ne f o r the t ype of p aper you are using. This will giv e you the best print quality. a Do one o f the following: To set the p aper type fo r the MP Tray press Menu , 1 , 1 , 1 , 1 .
Loadi ng paper 19 2 Tr ay Use in co py mo de 2 You can change th e p r iority tray that the machin e will use for printing copies. W hen you choose Tray#1 Only , MP Only or Tray#2 Only 1 , the m achine pul l s t he paper o nly from that tray. I f the selected tray is out of paper, No Paper w ill appea r on the LCD.
Chapter 2 20 Acceptabl e pa per an d other print media 2 Print qu ality may vary according t o the type of paper you are using. You can use t he following t ypes of print media : thin paper, plain paper, thick paper, bond pa per, recycled paper, glos s y paper, labels o r envelopes.

Chapter 2 22 Hand ling an d using s p e cial pape r 2 The machine is designed to work well with most types of xerogra phi c and bond paper. Howeve r , some paper variables may have an effect on print quality or handling reliability. Always te st samples of paper be f ore purchasin g to ensure des irable performanc e.
Loadi ng paper 23 2 Envelopes 2 Most envelopes designed for l aser printers will be suit a ble for your machine. However, some envelopes may h ave feed and print- quality prob lems becau se of the way t hey have been made.
Chapter 2 24 Labels 2 The ma c hine will print on most t ypes of labels designed for u s e with a laser m achi ne. Labels should hav e an adhesive that is acr yl ic- b ased since this material is more stable at the h i gh temperatu r e s in the fuser unit.
25 3 3 How to loa d documents 3 You can m ake copies, and scan from the ADF (Autom at i c Document Feeder) and the scanne r gla s s. Us ing th e a utom atic do cumen t feed er (A DF) 3 The A DF can hold up to 35 pages and feeds each s heet individually.

27 4 4 How to copy 4 The following steps show the basic cop y operati on. For details ab out each option, s ee the Advanced User ' s Guide . 1 No. of Copies You can enter the number of c o pies you want by using the nume ri c keys. a Do one of the foll owi ng to load your document : Place the document f ace up in the ADF.
28 5 Printing a docum ent 5 The m achine can receive dat a from you r comput er and print it. To pri nt from a comput er, install t h e printer driver. (See Prin ting for Wi ndows ® or Printing an d Faxing for Mac i ntos h in Software Us e r 's Guide for the details about the print settings.
29 6 6 Scanni ng a doc ument 6 There are several ways to scan docum ent s. You can us e the ( Scan ) key on the machin e or the sc anner drivers on your comput er. a To use the machine as a scanner, install a scanner driver. If the ma c h ine i s on a Network, configure it with a TCP / IP address.

The Stand ard toner cartridges can print approx i m at ely 2,500 page s (black) or approx i m at ely 1,500 page s (cyan, magent a, yellow) 1 .

Routine maint enance 37 A d Hold the handle of the t o ner cartridge and slightly push it toward the machine to unl ock it. Then pull it ou t of the drum unit. Rep eat this for all t he toner cartri d ges. WARNING DO NOT put a toner cartridge into a fire.
38 e Push to release the latches of the corona wire cover (1), and then open t he co ve r. f Clean the c orona wire in s ide t he drum unit by gently sliding the green tab from left to right and right to left sev eral t i m es. Note Be s u r e t o return th e tab to t he home pos ition ( a ) (1).
Routine maint enance 39 A g Close th e corona wire cov er. h Repeat steps e to g to clean each of three remaining corona wires. i Unpack the new toner c a r tridge. G ently shake it from side to side several t i m es to distribute the toner evenly inside the cartri d ge.
40 j Pull off the protec t ive cover. IMPORTAN T Put t he toner cartridge in the drum unit immedia tel y after you have removed t he protective c over. To p r e v ent any degradat ion t o the print quality, DO NOT touch the shade d parts sho wn in the illu strat ions.
Routine maint enance 41 A l Push the drum unit in until it stops . m Close the front cover of the machin e. Note Afte r you replace a toner cartridge, DO NOT t u rn off the machine's po wer switch or open t he f ront co v er until the LCD clears the Pl ease Wait m essage and returns to Ready mode.
42 Drum Stop A Drum St op We cann ot guaran t ee the print quality. Please replace t he drum uni t with a ne w one. We recomme nd a Br other Original d r u m unit be installed a t this tim e. After replacemen t , res et the drum counter by following the instructions included with the new drum unit.

46 g Hold the handle of the t on er cartridge and slide the toner cartridge into the new unit, then s l ig ht ly pul l it toward you unt i l you he ar i t click into pl ace. Make s ure that you match the toner cartridge colour to the s ame colour label on the drum unit.

60 Cleaning an d Checking the machine A Clean t he outside and inside of the m achine regularly with a dry, lint-free cloth. When you replace t he toner cart r idge or the drum unit, make sure that y ou clean the inside of the machine. If printed pa ges are s t a i ned with toner, c l ea n the inside of the machine with a dry, lint-free c l ot h.
Routine maint enance 61 A e Wipe t he inside and the outs i de of the paper tra y wi th a dry, l i nt-free sof t clo t h to rem ov e dus t. f Re-load the paper and put the paper tray firmly back in the machine. g Plug the machine’s power c ord back into the electrical socket first, and connect all cables.
62 c In the A DF unit, c lean the white bar (1) and the scanner glass strip (2) underneath it with a s o f t lint-free cloth moistened wi t h water. Note In a ddition to clea ning the sc anner gla s s and gl ass strip wi t h a soft lint-free cloth moistened with water, run your finger t ip over t he glass to s ee if you can fe el anything on it.

70 Cl eani ng the drum un it A If your printout has coloured dots at 9 4 mm inte rvals the drum may ha v e somethi ng stuck to the drum surf ace, such as glue from a label. F oll ow the s teps below to s olve the problem . a Make sure t hat th e machin e is i n th e Ready mode.

Make sure that the drum unit gears (1) are on the left hand side. h Note the following informat i on fr o m the drum do t check s heet: Dot col our For ex ample, a m ark on t he cyan drum wo uld produce a cyan dot on the che ck sheet.
74 j Turn the drum unit g ear toward you by hand while looking at the surface of the suspected area. k When you have found the ma r k on the drum that matches the drum dot check sheet, wipe the surface o f the drum gently with a c o t ton sw ab until the dust or paper po wder on t he surface c omes off.

Routine maint enance 79 A Fr eque ncy ( Colou r Co rrec tion ) A You can set how often the colour correction (Colour C alib ration and Aut o Registration) occurs. The default s ett in g is Normal. T he colour c orrection process consumes som e amou nt of the toner.
80 B Error and main tenance mes sages B As with any sophisticated office product, errors may occur and consum able i tem s may ne ed to be replaced. If this hap pens, your m achi ne identifies the error or requi r e d routine maintena nce an d shows the approp riat e message.
Troubl eshoot ing 81 B Cool ing Do wn Wai t for a wh ile The t emperat ure of the drum un i t or ton er cartri dge is too hot. The mac hine will pau se its curren t pri nt job a nd go into cool ing down mod e. During the cooli ng down mod e, you will hear the coo ling fan ru nning while th e LCD sho ws Cool ing Do wn , and Wait fo r a while .
82 Dupl ex D isabl ed Clos e the Bac k Cove r of the mach ine. The back of the machi ne is not closed compl etel y. Close the back co ver of the mach i ne .
Troubl eshoot ing 83 B No Pa per The mac hine is out of pape r or paper is not c orrect ly loaded in the pape r tray. Do one of the foll owing: Refill t he paper in t he paper tray. Remove t he paper and load it ag ain. If th e pr oblem is not res olved, the pape r pick- up ro ller m ay nee d to be cl eaned.
84 Regi stra tion Registratio n fai led. Press Mono Start or Colour Star t and t r y agai n. Do one of the followi ng: Turn of f the machine’s p ower switch. Wait a few se conds, then t urn it o n aga in. Try Manual Registr atio n, Men u , 3 , 8 .
