NWD2705 User’s Guide 11 C HAPTER 1 Getting Started 1.1 Overview The Z yXEL NWD2705 is a dual-band wireless USB adap ter , which can connect to a 2.4 G network or a 5G netowrk and bring you a better Internet expe rience over existing 802.11 networks.
Chapter 1 Get ting Started NWD2705 User’s Guide 12 1.2 About Y our NWD2705 Y our NWD2705 is an IEEE 802.11n compliant wirele ss LAN adapter . It can also connect to IEEE 802.11b/g wireless networks. The NWD2705 is WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup) compliant.
Chapter 1 Getting Started NWD2705 User’s Guide 13 1.3 Application Overview This section describes some network applications for the NWD2705. 1.3.1 Infrastructure T o connect to a network via an access poin t (AP), set the NWD2705 network type to Infrastructure (see Chapter 4 on page 43 ).
Chapter 1 Get ting Started NWD2705 User’s Guide 14 Note: When you use the ZyXEL utility , it automatic ally disables W ireless Zero Configuration (WZC) in Windows XP . Figure 3 ZyXEL Utility: System T r ay Icon The color of the Z yXEL utility system tr ay icon in dicates the status of the NWD2705.
Chapter 1 Getting Started NWD2705 User’s Guide 15 1.5.2 Accessing the ZyXEL Utility Double-click on the Z y XEL wireless LAN utility icon in the system tr ay to open the Z yXEL utility . The Z yXEL utility screens are similar in all Microsoft Windows versions.
NWD2705 User’s Guide 16 C HAPTER 2 Tutorial 2.1 Overview This tutorial shows you how to join a wireless in frastructure network using the Z yXEL utility . The wireless client is labeled C and the Access Point is labeled AP . Figure 5 Infrastructure Network 2.
Chapter 2 Tutorial NWD2705 User’s Guide 17 2.2 Connecting to an AP using Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS) This section gives y ou an example of how to set up y our wireless network using WPS. This example uses the NWD2705 as the wireless client, and ZyXEL ’s NBG4615 v2 as the Access P o int (AP).
Chapter 2 Tutorial NWD2705 User’s Guide 18 The following figure shows you an example to set up wireless network and securit y by pressing a button on both the AP (the NBG4615 v2 in this example) and the NWD2705. Figure 6 Example WPS Process: PBC Method 2.
Chapter 2 Tutorial NWD2705 User’s Guide 19 The following figure shows you the example of conf iguring th e wireless network and security on the NWD2705 and the AP (Z yXEL ’ s NBG4615 v2 in this example) by using the PIN method.
Chapter 2 Tutorial NWD2705 User’s Guide 20 2.3 Connecting to an AP Without Using WPS There are three ways to connect the wireless client (the NWD2705) to a network without using WPS. • Configure nothing and leav e the wireless client to automatically scan for and connect to an y av ailable network that has no wireless security configured.
Chapter 2 Tutorial NWD2705 User’s Guide 21 4 When you try to connect to an AP with security configured, a window will pop up prompting you to specify the security settings. Enter the pre-shared key and leav e the encryption type at the default setting.
Chapter 2 Tutorial NWD2705 User’s Guide 22 7 Open your Internet browser and enter http://www .zyxel.com or the URL of any oth er web site in the address bar . If you are able to access the web site, your wireless connection is successfully configured.
Chapter 2 Tutorial NWD2705 User’s Guide 23 4 Choose the same encryption method as the AP to which y ou want to connect (In this example, WPA -PSK). Figure 14 Zy XEL Utility: Profile Security 5 This screen varies depending on the encryption meth od you selected in the previous screen.
Chapter 2 Tutorial NWD2705 User’s Guide 24 Note: Only one pr ofile can be act ivated and used at any given tim e. Figure 17 Zy XEL Utility: Profile Activate 8 When you activ ate the new profile, the ZyXEL utilit y goes to the Link Info screen while it connects to the AP using your settings.
NWD2705 User’s Guide 25 C HAPTER 3 Wireless LANs 3.1 Overview This section provides background information on wireless Local Area Networks. 3.1.1 What Y ou Can Do in This Section • Connect securely to an AP using man y of the strongest and most common encryption protocols.
Chapter 3 Wireless LANs NWD2705 User’s Guide 26 3.2 Wireless LAN Overview The following figure provides an example of a wireless network with an AP . Figure 18 Example of a Wireless Network The wireless network is the part in the blue circle. In this wireless network, devices A and B are called wireless clients.
Chapter 3 Wireless LANs NWD2705 User’s Guide 27 3.3.1 WEP 3.3.1.1 Dat a Encryption WEP (Wired Equivalent Priv acy) encryption scram bles all data pack ets transmitted between the NWD2705 and the AP or other wireless stations to keep network communications priv ate.
Chapter 3 Wireless LANs NWD2705 User’s Guide 28 single, alphanumeric password to der ive a PMK which is u sed to generate unique temporal encryption keys. This prevent all wireless devices sharing the same encryption keys. (a weakness of WEP) If both an AP and the wireless clients support WP A2-PSK, use WPA2-PSK for stronger data encryption.
Chapter 3 Wireless LANs NWD2705 User’s Guide 29 3.4.2 PIN Configuration Each WPS-enabled device has its own PIN (Persona l Identification Number). This may either be static (it cannot be changed) or dynamic (in some devices you can gener ate a new PIN by clicking on a button in the configur ation interface).
Chapter 3 Wireless LANs NWD2705 User’s Guide 30 The following figure shows a WPS-enabled wireless client (installed in a notebook computer) connecting to the WPS-enab led AP via the PIN method. Figure 19 Example WPS Proces s: PIN Method 3.4.3 How WPS Works When two WPS-enabled devices connect, each device must assume a specific role.
Chapter 3 Wireless LANs NWD2705 User’s Guide 31 The following figure shows a WPS-enabled client (i nstalled in a notebook computer) connecting to a WPS-enabled access point. Figure 20 How WPS works The roles of registrar and enrollee last only as long as the WPS setup process is active (two minutes).
Chapter 3 Wireless LANs NWD2705 User’s Guide 32 is the registrar , and Client 1 is the enrollee. The registrar randomly generates the security information to set up the networ k, since it is unconfigured and has no existing information. Figure 21 WPS: Example Network Step 1 In step 2 , you add another wireless client to the network.
Chapter 3 Wireless LANs NWD2705 User’s Guide 33 In step 3, you add another access point ( AP2 ) to your network. AP2 is out of range of AP1 , so y ou cannot use AP1 for the WPS handshake with the new access point. However , you know that Client 2 supports the registr ar function, so you use it to perf orm the WPS handshake instead.
Chapter 3 Wireless LANs NWD2705 User’s Guide 34 • When you use the PBC m ethod, there is a short period (from the moment you press the button on one device to the moment you press the bu tton on the other device) when any WPS-enabled device could join the network.
NWD2705 User’s Guide 35 C HAPTER 4 ZyXEL Utility: Station Mode 4.1 Overview This section shows you how to configure y our NWD2705 using the ZyXEL utilit y in Windows. 4.1.1 What Y ou Can Do in This Section •O n t h e Link Info screen, you can see your current connection details, monitor signal strength and quality , and more.
Chapter 4 ZyXEL Utility: Stati on Mode NWD2705 User’s Guide 36 Pre-Shared Key (PSK) A pre-shared key is a password shared between the server and the client that unlocks the algorithm used to encrypt the data tr affic between them.
