GETTING STARTED 3 INTRODUCTION Check that you recei ved all of the follo wing parts. 1 T ake off the battery compar tment cover . 2 Insert the two suppl ied batteries (AA, R6, UM-3) accor ding to the p olarity markings (+ and –) on the inside of the battery compartment.

CONNECTIONS 12 The speaker layout belo w sho ws the standard ITU-R * speaker setting. Y ou can use it to enjo y CINEMA DSP and multi-channel audio sources. * ITU-R is the radio communication sector of the IT U (International T elecommunication Union).
13 CONNECTIONS PREP ARA TION Be sure to connec t the left cha nnel (L), right ch annel (R), “+” (red) and “–” ( black) properly . If the connections are f aulty , no sound will be heard fro m th e speake rs, and if the polarity of the speake r connections is incorrect, the sound will be unnatural and lack bass.
14 CONNECTIONS FRONT terminals Connect one or two front spea ker systems (1, 2) to these terminals. If you use only one front speaker system, connect it to the FR ONT A or B terminal. CENTER terminals Connect a center speaker (3) to these terminals. SURROUND terminals Connect surround speakers (4, 5) to these terminals.
15 CONNECTIONS PREP ARA TION ■ Connecting the speaker cab le 1 Remove ap pro ximately 10 mm (0.4 in) o f insulation from the end of each speaker cable and then twist the exposed wires of the cable together to pr e vent short circuits. 2 Loosen the knob.
16 CONNECTIONS Y ou can use the digital jacks to input PCM, Dolby Digital and DTS bitstr eams. When you connect compon ents to bot h the COAXIAL and OPTICAL jacks, priority is gi ven to th e signals input at the COAXIAL jack. All di gital input jacks are compatible with 96-k Hz sampling digital signals.
17 CONNECTIONS PREP ARA TION ■ A udio signal flow f or A UDIO OUT (REC) This unit handles digital and analog signals independently . Thus, audio signals inp ut at the analog jacks ar e output only at th e analog A UDIO OUT (RE C) jacks.
18 CONNECTIONS Connect your TV to the VIDEO MONIT OR OUT jack, the S VIDEO MONITOR OUT jack or the COMPONENT VIDEO MONITOR OUT jacks of this unit. Do not connect this uni t or othe r components to the A C power supply until all connections between components are complete .
19 CONNECTIONS PREP ARA TION Connect your D VD player , D VD recorder , VCR or STB (set-top box) using the same type of video connections as those made for your TV (see page 18) . The cable TV recei v er and the sate llite recei v er are ex amples of the STB.

21 CONNECTIONS PREP ARA TION Connect your CD player , MD pl ayer or tape deck via anal og and/or digital connections. Do not connect this u nit or other components to the A C power suppl y until all connections between componen ts are co mplete.
22 CONNECTIONS This unit is equipped with the DOCK te rminal on the rear panel that allows you to connect a Y AMAHA iPod univ ersal dock (such as YDS-10 sold se parately) where you can station your iPod a nd control playback of your iPod using the supplied remote control.
23 CONNECTIONS PREP ARA TION This unit is equipped with 6 additional input jacks (FR ONT L/R, CENTER, SURR OUND L/R and SUBWOOFER) for discrete mu lti-channel input from a multi-format player , e xternal decoder or sound processor . Connect the output jacks on your multi-format player or externa l decoder to the MUL T I CH INPUT jacks.
24 CONNECTIONS Both FM and AM indoor ante nnas are supplied with this unit. In general, these ante nnas should pr ovide suf ficient signal strength. Connect each ante nna correctly to the designated terminals. • Be sure to set the tuner frequency step (Asia and General models only) according to the frequen cy spacing in your ar ea (see page 89).
25 CONNECTIONS PREP ARA TION Once all connections are co mplete, plug the power cabl e into the A C wall outlet. ■ V O L T A GE SELECTOR (Asia and General models onl y) The V OL T A GE SELECT O R on the rear panel of this unit m ust be set f or y our local v oltage BEFORE plugging the power cable into the A C wall outlet.
26 CONNECTIONS If you are to use 4 or 6 ohm speakers, set “SP IMP .” to “6 Ω MIN” as follo ws BEFORE using this unit. 1 Make sure this unit is turned off .
27 CONNECTIONS PREP ARA TION When all connection s are complete, turn on this unit. ■ T urni ng on this unit Press MASTER ON/OFF on the fr ont panel inwar d to the ON position to turn on this unit. • Press MAIN ZONE ON/OFF on the front panel (or ST ANDBY on the remote control) to set the main zone to the standby mode.
BASIC SETUP 28 The “B ASIC SETUP” feature is a u seful way t o se t up yo ur system quickly and with minimal ef fort. • Make sure you discon nect your headphones from this un it. • If you wish to configure this unit manually using more precis e adjustments, use th e detailed parameters in “SOUND MENU” (see page 78).
29 BASIC SETUP PREP ARA TION 6 Press d to select “SUBWOOFER” and then j / i to select the desired setting. Choices: YES , NONE • Select “YES” if you hav e a subwoofer in your system. • Select “NONE” if you do not hav e a subwoofer in your system.

PLAYBACK 31 BAS I C OPERA TION Extreme caution shou ld be exer cised when you play bac k CDs encoded in DTS. If you play back a CD encoded in DTS on a DTS-incompatible CD play er , yo u will onl y hear some unwanted noise that may damage your speakers.
32 PLAYBACK 5 Rotate V OLUME on the front panel (or press V OLUME +/– on the remote control) to adjust the volume to the de sired output le vel. 6 Press T ONE CONTROL on the fr ont panel repeatedly to select “TREBLE” or “B ASS” and then rotate the PR OGRAM selector to adjust the corresponding frequency response level.
USING AUDIO FEATURES 33 BAS I C OPERA TION SILENT CINEMA allows you to enjoy mu lti-channel music or movie sound, including Dolby Digital and DTS sources, through ordinary headphones.
34 USING AUDIO FEATURES y “NIGHT :CINEMA” and “NIGHT :MUSIC” adjustments are stored independently . • Y ou cannot use the night listeni ng modes in the follo wing cases: – when the “DIRECT STEREO ” mode (see page 38) is selected.
35 USING AUDIO FEATURES BAS I C OPERA TION 3 Press SLEEP on the remote control repeatedly to set the amount of time . Each time you press SLEEP, the front panel display changes as show n below . The SLEEP indicator flashes while you are switching the amount of time for the sl eep timer .
36 USING AUDIO FEATURES 2 Press j / i on the rem ote cont r ol to adjust the speaker output level. • Press i to increase the v alue. • Press j to decrease th e v alue. Control range: –10 dB to +10 dB 3 Press ENTER on the remote control when yo u have completed y our adjustment.

38 USING AUDIO FEATURES Y ou can mix do wn multi-cha nnel sources to 2 channels and enjoy playback in 2- channel stereo. Set the component selector switch to AMP and then press STEREO on the remote control repeatedly to select “2ch Stereo”.
USING VIDEO FEATURES 39 BAS I C OPERA TION Y ou can display the format, sa mpling frequency , channel, bit rate and flag data of the current in put signal. 1 Set the compon ent selector switch to AMP and then press SET MENU on the remote contro l. The top “SET MENU” disp lay appears in the OSD.
40 USING VIDEO FEATURES Y ou can display the operating information o f this unit on a video monitor . If you displa y the “SET MENU” and sound field progr am parameter setti ngs on a video monitor , it is much easier to see the av a ilable options and parameters than it is to read the information in the front panel display .
ENJOYING SURROUND SOUND 41 BAS I C OPERA TION If you connected a surround back speaker , use this feature to enjoy 6.1-channel playback for multi-channel sources using the Dolby Pro Logic IIx, Dolb y Digital EX or DTS-ES decoders. 1 Set the compon ent selector switch to AMP and then press EXTD SU R.
42 ENJOYING SURROUND SOUND Signals input from 2-channel s ources can also be played back on multi-channels. 1 Set the component selector switch to AMP and then press ST AND ARD on the re mote control repeatedl y to switc h between the “SUR. ST AND ARD” and “SUR.
43 ENJOYING SURROUND SOUND BAS I C OPERA TION V irtual CINEMA DSP allo ws you to e njoy the CINEMA DSP programs without surr ound speakers. It creates virtual speakers to repr oduce the natural sound f ield.
RECORDING 44 Recording adjustments and ot her operations are performed from the reco rding components. Re fer to the operating instructions for those components. The DTS signal is a digital bitstream. Attemp ting to digitall y recor d the DTS bitstream will result in noise being recorded.
FM/AM TUNING 45 BAS I C OPERA TION There are 2 tuning methods: automatic a nd manual. Automatic tuning is effecti v e when station signa ls are strong and there is no interference. If the signal from th e station you want to select is weak, t une into it manually .
46 FM/AM TUNING If the signal receiv ed from the station you w ant to select is weak, tune into it manua lly . Manually tuning into an FM st ation automatically switches the tuner to monaural reception to increa se the signal quality . 1 Rotate the INPUT selector to select “TUNER” as the input source.
47 FM/AM TUNING BAS I C OPERA TION Y ou can use the automatic pres et tuning feature to store FM stations with strong signals up to 40 (A1 to E8: 8 preset station numbers in ea ch of the 5 preset station groups) of those stations in order . Y ou can then recall an y preset station easily by sele cting the preset station number .
48 FM/AM TUNING ■ A utomatic preset tuning option s Y ou can specify the preset number from which this unit stores FM stations and/or be gins tuning tow ard lo wer frequencies. First carry out steps 1 through 3 in “ Automatic preset tun ing” on page 47.

In addition to making the sound liv e, thes e reflections en able us to tell where the pl ayer is situat ed as well as the size and shape of the room in which we are sitting.
64 SOUND FIELD PROGRAMS This unit is equipped with a variety of precise d igital de coders that allow you to enjo y multi-channel playback from almost any stereo or multi-ch annel sound source.

66 SOUND FIELD PROGRAMS Y ou can enjoy good quality sound with the initial factory settings. Although you do not hav e to change the initial factory settings, you can change some of the parameters to better suit the input source or your listening room.

69 SOUND FIELD PROGRAMS SOUND FIELD PROGRAMS REV.TIME Re verberation time. Adjusts the amount of time taken for the de nse, subsequent rev erberation sound to decay by 60 dB at 1 kHz. This change s the apparent size of the acoustic en vironment over an extremely wide range.
70 SOUND FIELD PROGRAMS REV.LEVEL Re verberation lev el. Adjusts the volume of the rev erberation sound. The larger the value, the stronger the reverberation becomes.

SET MENU 75 AD V ANCED OPERA TION Y ou can use the follo wing paramete rs in “SET MENU” to adjust a v ariety of system settings and customiz e the way this unit operates. Change the initial settings (indicated in bold under each parameter) to reflect the needs of your listenin g en vironment.
76 SET MENU Option menu 3 OPTION MENU Use this menu to manually adj ust the optional syst em parameters. The “XM RADIO SET” para meter is only applic able to the U.S.A. model. ■ Signal information SIGNAL INFO Use this feature to check audio signal information (see page 39).
77 SET MENU AD V ANCED OPERA TION Use the remote control to acce ss and adjust each parameter . y • Y ou can change the “SET MENU” parameters while this unit is reproducing sound. • If you press one of the so und fi eld program selector b uttons during the “SET MENU” operation, the “SET MENU” operation is canceled.

82 SET MENU ■ Dynamic range F)DYNAMIC RANGE Use this feat ure to select the amount of dynamic range compression to be applied to your speakers or headphones. This sett ing is ef fecti ve only when this unit is decoding Dolby Digital and DTS signals.
83 SET MENU AD V ANCED OPERA TION Use this menu to reassign the i nput/output jacks, select the input mode or rename the input source. ■ Input/output assignme nt A)I/O ASSIGNMENT Use this feature to assign th e input/output jacks according to the component to be used if the initial settings of this unit do not correspond to your needs.
84 SET MENU ■ Input mode B)INPUT MODE Use this feature to set this unit to reset “I NPUT MODE” back to “A UTO” (see page 34) regardless of the pre vious setting or to recall the last input mode (“A UT O”, “DTS”, or “AN ALOG”) used for that source whene ver you turn on this unit.
