GETTING STARTED 3 English INTRODUCTION Please check t hat you recei ved all of the following parts. 1 Press the part and slide the battery compartment cover off. 2 Insert four supplied batteries (AAA, LR03) according to the polari ty markings on the inside of the battery compar tment.
CONTROLS AND FUNCTIONS 4 1 ST ANDBY/ON T urns on this unit or sets it to the standby mode. When you turn on this unit, you will hear a click and ther e will be a 6 to 7 second delay before th is unit can reproduce sound. In standby mo de, this unit consumes a small amount of power in order to receive infrared-signa ls from the remote control.
CONTROLS AND FUNCTIONS 5 English INTRODUCTION B MUL TI CH INPUT Selects the source connected to the MUL TI CH INPUT jacks. When selected, the MUL TI CH INPUT source takes priority ov er the source selected with INPUT (or the input selector buttons on the remote control).

21 English CONNECTIONS PREP ARA TION ■ Connections f or audio components ■ Connecting a turn table PHONO jacks are for connecti ng a turntable with an MM or high-output MC cartridge. If you ha ve a turntable with a low- output MC cartridge, use an in-line boosting transformer or MC-head amplifier when connecting to these jacks.

23 English CONNECTIONS PREP ARA TION Both AM and FM indoor antennas ar e included with this unit. In genera l, these anten n as should provi de suf fici ent signal strength. Connect each antenna correctly to the designated terminals. ■ Connecting the AM loop antenna 1 Set up the AM loop ante nna , then connect it to the terminals on this unit.
24 CONNECTIONS ■ Connecting the A C power cable Plug the po wer cable into the A C inlet after all other connections are complete, then plug the po wer cable to an A C wa ll outlet. Do not use other A C power ca bles. Use the one provided. Use of other power cables may result in f ire hazard or electrical shock.
25 English CONNECTIONS PREP ARA TION Be sure this unit is in the standby mode. 1 On the front panel, while hold ing down STRAIGHT/EFFECT, press ST ANDBY/ON. “SP IMP .–8 Ω MIN” appears on the front panel display . 2 Press STRAIGHT/EFFECT to select the impedance of your speakers.
AUTO SETUP 26 This receiv er employs Y AMAHA Parametric Room Acoustic Optimize r (YP A O) technology which lets you av oid troublesome listening-based speak er setup and achiev es highly accu rate sound adjustments. The supplied optimizer microphone collects and analyzes the sound your speakers produce in y our actual listening en vironment.
27 English AUTO SETUP PREP ARA TION For best results, make sure th e room is as quiet as possible during the auto setup proced ure (YP A O). If there is too much ambient noise, the results may not be satisf actory .
28 AUTO SETUP For Equalizing, press k / n to select: Skip T o skip the selected item and pe rform no adjustments. Check: Natur al T o average out the frequency response of all speakers with higher frequencies being less emphasized. Recommend ed if the “Flat” setting sounds a little harsh.
29 English AUTO SETUP PREP ARA TION Y ou can conf irm the resu lts of each analysis. If you set Setup T ype to Auto. The results are displayed after all items ha ve been analysed. • Press n and select Setup to se t the measured values. • Press k and select Retry to r etry the auto setup procedure.

37 English PLAYBACK BAS I C OPERA TION ■ Listening to high fidelity stereo sound (PURE DIRECT) PURE DIRECT bypasses this unit’ s decoders and DSP processors as well as shuts down the video circuitry , allowing you to enjo y the hi gh est possible sound fidelity from analog and PCM sources.
38 PLAYBACK ■ Down mixing to 2 c hannels Y ou can enjoy 2-channel stereo playback from multi- channel sources. Rotate PROGRAM (or press STEREO on the remote control) to select 2ch Stereo. Y ou can use a subwoofer with this program wh en SWFR or Both is selected in Bass Out.
39 English PLAYBACK BAS I C OPERA TION This unit comes with a v ariety of input jacks. Do the follo wing to select the type of input signal you want to use. 1 Select the input source. 2 Press INPUT MODE to select an input mode. In most cases, use AUT O.
TUNING 40 There are 2 tuning methods ; automatic and manual. Automatic tuning is ef fectiv e when station signals are strong and there is no interference. ■ A utomatic tuni ng 1 Rotate INPUT to select TUNER as the input sour ce. 2 Press FM/AM to select the reception band.
41 English TUNING BAS I C OPERA TION ■ A utomaticall y presetting FM stations Y ou can use the automatic pres et tuning feature to store FM stations. This function enables this unit to automatically tune into FM stations with strong signals, and to store up to 40 (8 stations in 5 groups, A1 through E8) of those stations in or der .

44 TUNING RDS (Radio Data System) is a data transmission system used by FM stations in ma n y countries. The RDS function is carried out among the network stations.
45 English TUNING BAS I C OPERA TION If you select the desired program type, this unit automatically se arches all preset RDS stations that ar e broadcasting a program of the requ ired type. y When performing this operation with the remote control, first press TUNER to set the remote to tuner mode .
46 TUNING This function uses the E ON data service on the RDS station network. If you select the desired program type (NEWS, INFO, AFF AIRS or SP OR T), this unit automatically searches for all preset.
RECORDING 47 English BAS I C OPERA TION Y ou can use the REC OUT/ZONE 2 or REC OUT con trol to record one source while watching and/or listening to another source. Recording adjustments a nd other operations are performed from the recording components.

ADVANCED OPERATIONS 52 Use this feature to automa tically set this unit in th e standby mode after a certain amount of time. The sleep timer is useful when you are goi ng to sleep while this unit is playing or recording a s ource. The sleep timer also automatically turns of f an y external components connected to the A C OUTLET(S).

62 SYSTEM OPTIONS Surr ound (Surr ound left/right speaker s) Choices: Large, Small , None • Select “Lar ge” if you hav e la r ge surround left and right speakers or if a rear subw oofer is connected to the surround speakers. The entire range of the surround channel signal is directed to the surround left and right speakers.
63 English SYSTEM OPTIONS AD V ANCED OPERA TION Presence (Presence spea kers) Choices: None , Y es • Select “None” if you do not ha ve presence speak ers. This unit directs all presence cha nnel signals to the front left and right speakers. • Select “Y es” if you have presence speakers.
64 SYSTEM OPTIONS ■ Speaker Distance (Speaker dista nce) Use this feature to manually input the distance of each speaker and adjust the delay applied to the respective channel. Ideally , each speake r should be the same distance from the main listening po sition.

74 REMOTE CONTROL FEATURES Y ou can change the name that appears in the display window on the remote control if you w ant to use a different name than the f actory preset. This is useful when you hav e set the input selector to control a different component.
75 English REMOTE CONTROL FEATURES AD V ANCED OPERA TION The Macro feature makes it possible to perform a series of operations with the pr ess of a single b utton. For e xample, when you want to play a CD, normally you would turn on the components, select the CD i nput, and press the play b utton to start playback.
76 REMOTE CONTROL FEATURES ■ Macro ope rations 1 Set MA CRO ON/OFF to ON. 2 Press a macro b utton. • When you ha ve f inished using the Macro f eature, set MA CRO ON/OFF to OFF.
77 English REMOTE CONTROL FEATURES AD V ANCED OPERA TION 4 Press the bu ttons for th e functions y ou want to include in the macro operation in sequence. Y ou can set up to 10 steps (10 functions). After you hav e set 10 steps, “FULL” appears and the remote control automati cally exit s the macro mode.
78 REMOTE CONTROL FEATURES 5 Press CLEAR to exit fr om the c lear mode. • “C:NG” appears in the display window if clearing was unsuccessful. In this case start over from step 3. • “ERR OR” appears in the display windo w if you press a b utton not indicated in the respective st ep, or if you press mo re than one button simultaneously .
79 English REMOTE CONTROL FEATURES AD V ANCED OPERA TION 4 Press and hold CLEAR usin g a ballpoin t pen or similar object, then press the bu tton you want to clear f or about 3 seconds. “C:OK” appears in the di splay window if clearing was successful.
80 REMOTE CONTROL FEATURES Once you set the appropriate remo te control codes, you can use this remote to control your other components. Note that some buttons may not correctly operate the selected co mponent. Use the input selector b uttons to se lect the component you wa nt to operate.
ZONE 2/ZONE 3 (U.S.A ., CANADA, U.K., EUROPE AND AUSTRALIA MODELS ONLY) 81 English AD V ANCED OPERA TION This unit allows you to conf igure a multi-room audio system. Th e Zone 2 and Zone 3 features enable you to set this unit to reproduce separate input sources in the main room, second room (Zone 2) a nd third room (Zone 3).
