Introduction Y our Xantrex T ruecharge 10 is an advanced battery char ger designed specifically for today’ s high performance deep-cycle lead-acid batteries. It provides charging performance that simple marine and automotive chargers are unable to provide.
charging current for a short initial part of the char ge cycle. Charging current decreases rapidly (“tapers off”) as the battery char ges. Because it delivers rated current over most of the charge cycle, your T ruecharge 10 will charge your batteries faster than many other char gers rated at 20 amperes or more.
Theory of Operation High Frequency P ower Converter The T ruecharge 10 uses modern high frequency switching power circuits to convert the alternating current from the utility line to the low voltage direct current required to charge the battery .
Three-Step Charging Pr ocess Modern lead-acid batteries will last longer and charge faster if they are charged in a particular sequence known as a thr ee-step char ge.
conditions are met: • A battery is connected • The battery is connected with proper polarity • The battery voltage is between 5 volts and 13 volts The T ruecharge 10 will not act as a battery eliminator or power supply . It must be connected to a battery to operate.
The first two conditions ensure that the T ruecharge 10 keeps your battery “topped up” if it is left permanently connected. The last two conditions ensure that the T ruecharge 10 starts in a predictable fashion after you disconnect the battery or the AC power .
before attempting any maintenance or cleaning. W ARNING! RISK OF EXPLOSIVE GASES. WORKING IN THE VICINITY OF A LEAD-ACID BA TTER Y IS DANGEROUS. BA TTERIES GENERA TE EXPLOSIVE GASES DURING NORMAL BA TTER Y OPERA TION. FOR THIS REA- SON IT IS OF UTMOST IMPOR T ANCE THA T YOU READ THIS MANUAL AND FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS EXACTL Y .
this battery charger to char ge nickel-cadmium (Ni-Cd), nickel-metal hydride (Ni-MH), lithium (Li) and dry cell batteries commonly used with home appliances and electronic equipment. These batteries may burst and cause injury to persons and damage to property .
DC Connection Precautions • Connect DC output clips only after the AC cord is connected to the electrical outlet and the charger indicator lights turn on. The char ger has an anti-sparking feature that only functions properly if the charger is on.
CAUTION! T o r educe risk of fire, do not cover or obstruct the ventilation openings. Do not install the T ruecharge 10 in a zero- clearance compartment. Overheating may result. W ARNING: This equipment contains components that may produce arcs or sparks.
Battery Charging Safety Charging a battery when it is installed in an engine compartment T o reduce the risk of a spark near the battery: 1) Position AC and DC cords to reduce risk of damage by access doors, hood, or moving engine parts. 2) Stay clear of fan blades, belts, pulleys, and other parts that can cause injury to persons.
Charging a battery when it is installed outside the engine compartment T o reduce the risk of a spark near the battery: 1) Check the polarity of the battery posts. The POSITIVE (POS, P , +) battery post usually has a larger diameter than the NEGA TIVE (NEG, N, –) post.
Operating Instructions Charge Cycle The T ruecharge 10 can charge all 12 volt lead-acid batteries including sealed, maintenance-free, and gel types. It is best suited for batteries with capacities between 25 ampere hours and 200 ampere hours. (battery sizes from U1 to 4D).
3) Set the BA TTER Y TEMPERA TURE selector switch for the tem- perature of your battery . If your battery temperature is below 50 °F , (10 °C), set the switch to COLD. If your battery temperature is between 50 °F (10 °C) and 80 °F (27 °C), set the switch to HOT .
Charging Times Charging time will depend on the capacity of your battery and on how deeply it is discharged. The following equation gives an approximate charging time: Charging time = CAP × DOD 85.
