If you in sert the Car d into th e CompactFlash T ype II slot of your PD A first, it will not work un til you install the so ftware .

wir eless networking 10 Inserting the Car d into the CompactFlash T ype II Slot o f y our PD A Note: Install the software FIRST . If you insert the Card into the CompactFlash Type II slot o f your PDA first, it will not work until you install the software .
11 U sing the Car d After insertin g the Car d for th e first time , if you have installed the so ftware , the Wir eless Confi gur ation U tility screen (see below) will appear automati cally on your portable devi ce .
wir eless networking 12 Opening the Wir eless Configur ation Utility Scr een If the Wir eless Configur ation U tility Screen is n ot open, you can open it by followin g these steps: 1. Click “Start” . 2. Click “Settin gs” . 3. Select the “System” tab .

For instan ce , if you use your Card at your workplace as well as your h ome , your wireless network settin gs may be differ ent f or each location.
wir eless networking 14 Mode Un der th e “Mod e” dr op-d own list, you may ch oose either Infr astructur e or Ad-H oc operatin g mod e . Th e Infrastru cture m ode allows th e Card to communi cate with a wired n etwork that is using an access poin t or a wireless r outer .
15 A d-Hoc Use A d-Hoc m ode if you wish to comm unicate dir ectly with anoth er wireless d evice . For Ad-H oc comm uni cation, all wir eless devi ces must be set to the sam e SSID and Chann el. If using en cryption, th e encrypti on settings on each d evice m ust also match.
wir eless networking 16 SSID The SSID (Servi ce Set Id entifi er) is the wir eless network n ame . Every wireless n etwork uses an SSID or wireless n etwork nam e very mu ch the same way a wir ed network uses a work group n ame . The SSID is a m ean s of i den tifying th e wireless n etwork.
17 SSID in A d-Hoc Mode In Ad-H oc mod e , each wireless d evi ce will use the sam e SSID to create a small wir eless network. For in stance , if you wan t to conn ect a PDA to a PC, then both m ust have the sam e SSID such as “WLAN” . In additi on, the wireless chann el must also be th e same .
wir eless networking 18 T r ansmit Rate The 802.11b wir eless Ethern et stand ard was en gineer ed to operate at differen t data r ates depen ding on th e environm ent in whi ch it is oper ating. The m aximum d ata rate is 11Mbps (11 m egabits per second or 11 milli on bits per second).
19 P ow er Save Enabled P ower Save mod e is only available when usin g Infrastru ctur e mod e . When enabled , P ower Save mod e will let the Car d g o to “sleep” (ultralow power mod e) when it is n ot tran smitting or r eceiving d ata. T o conserve battery life , you can select to enable th e P ower Save mod e .
wir eless networking 20 A d-Hoc Channel An Ad-H oc network is a peer-to-peer (d evice-to-d evice) n etwork. Up to 64 wireless d evices can cr eate an Ad-H oc network in th e same space . Th er e are two m ajor requir emen ts to establish this type of n etwork.
21 Encryption For security , the 802.11b stan dar d incorpor ates a meth od of “scr ambling” the d ata being sen t over the air . This is called WEP (Wired Equivalen t Privacy). Ther e are two differ ent levels o f WEP: 64-bit encrypti on and 128-bit encrypti on.
