Chapter 1 - Overview The RAM-SAN TM is a hi gh-perform ance, m ulti-ported, solid-state disk. Me mory capacit y ranges from 16 gigaby tes (GB) through 128 G B in 16 GB increm ents 1 .
Chapter 2 - Inst allation The RAM-SAN is shipped with m emory boar ds and i nterfaces already installed. Be fore connecting t o a power su pply, please perform a preliminary inspection to check for an y signs of loos e parts, to ensure that all interfaces are still firmly position ed in place, and to check for any obvious sign s of damage.
The managem ent port support s Ethernet co nnections via Te lnet. The IP address ma y be assigned autom atically using a DHCP, BOOTP or RARP se rver. The IP addres s m ay also be statically set using the ‘ ipcon fig ’ command fr om the serial port.
Chapter 3 - Underst anding Y our RAM-SAN 3.1 Interface Slot Numbering Each device in a RAM-SAN has a unique internal addr ess based on the physical location of th e device in the system. An interface’s port num ber can be determined by insp ecting the back of t he RAM-SAN (see Figure 1).

Figure 3 – Top-down View of RAM-SAN Internals The Front Panel Display Mounted on the front of the RAM- SAN is a front panel display (see Figur e 4). When the RAM-SAN is in op eration, the display reflects the system m emory activity.

Chapter 4 – Configuring the RAM-SAN This chapter focuses on configuring the RAM-SAN. This incl udes confi guring the Et hernet param eters, resizing LU NS, and performi ng LUN Maskin g. 4.1 The RAM-SAN Monitor The RAM-SAN is managed t hrough an interactive command tool .
The amount of storage allocat ed to each Fibre Channel port may be changed using a simple configuration utility provided in the monitor. To enter this utility, type ‘ partition ’ on the monitor co mmand line.

4.3.5 Saving the Confi guration to Flash RAM The RAM-SAN has now bee n configure d to allow acc ess from four different HBAs to 3 differe nt LUNs withi n the mem ory system. To actually commit the change we have m ade, we can use the ‘ w ’ command t o save the c onfiguration i nto Flash RAM.
Chapter 5 – Using the Management Port The managem ent port on the RAM-SAN allows an admi nistrator to confi gure the syste m, moni tor perform ance, and diagno se problems with the system. The ‘ help ’ command displays a list of commands av ailable.
5.5 history The monitor maintains a volatile command history of the last 25 commands that hav e been entered. Using the ‘ history ’ command pr ovides a lis ting of t he history. Commands m ay be e ntered usin g the ‘<’ a nd ‘>’ key s to scrol l through thi s history or the unix-like ‘!’ comman ds.
5.13 status [port] The status command provides an overview of the RAM- SAN includi ng Ethernet i nformati on, memory size, and the sta te of the Fibre Channel ports. The following output shows a sample statu s screen: ram-san> status Texas Memory Systems, Inc.
Chapter 6 - T roubleshooting This chapter is a quick troublesh ooting guide for the most common RAM-SA N errors. To verify basic RAM-SAN operation, please consult Chapter 5 fo r instructions on running the syst em diagnostics. Below is a short list of RA M-SAN er rors, symptoms and solutions.
6.2.1 MCP21 Does Not Display Characters If nothing is displayed on the dumb terminal connected to the RAM-SAN, try the following: • Check for solid serial cable connection at bo t h the ma nagement and the debu g monito r.
the memory connect or – the connector has a key t o keep the mem ory board from goin g in backwards or awkwardly. Once in pla ce, use the handl es to evenly levera ge the memory board int o the slot. • If none of the abo ve hints helped, faulty hardware may exist.
Then repeat the steps abo ve to confirm that the me mory error follow ed the suspected board to th e new board slot. Contact Texas Memory S ystems with all the inf ormatio n you have found t o begin actions to resolve the problem. 6.5 Confidence Diagnostic, DIAGMEM, Fails If the ‘ testmem ’ test produces error m essages, use section 6.
