7 Chapter 1 Introduction Chapter Introduction Overview The LIB-81 is an AIT (Adv anced Intelligent Tape) li brary with a built-in AIT drive. Up to 8 cartridges can be set and used. The uni t can also be connected to, and used with, a work station or server.
8 Chapter 1 Introduction Notes • Cartrid ges that can be used vary a ccording to the type of built-in drive. • The memory capa city mentioned above a ssumes the use of all 8 AIT cartridges, no compression. • For combinations other than thos e me ntioned above, refer to the attached sheet.
9 Chapter 1 Introduction A Front Panel There are two shapes for the front panel. B Power Indicator LED This LED light is on wh en the power i s turned on. C Cartridg e Dock Load and exchange cartridge s in the cartridge dock. Wh en the cartridge dock is specified using the control buttons, its shutt er opens automatically.

12 Chapter 1 Introduction Built-in AIT-1 drive (LIB-81/A1 models) Caution • Do not use 8 mm video tapes sold at stores. An 8 mm video t ape looks a lot like an AIT cartrid ge, but has differ e nt specifications. Do not use any cartridge other than those listed ab ove.
13 Chapter 2 Ins tallation Chapter Installation Overview This chapter explains general proc edur es for positioning the AIT library, connecting it to the host computer and tu rning on the library power. This chapter also explains in itial setup. Install ation and setup step s may vary depend ing on your system.
14 Chapter 2 Ins tallation 2 Remove the transport screw (turn co unterclockwise ) from the Shipping position (upper hole) at the rear of the library, and then set it in the Operation posi tion (lower hole) with a screw driver or coin. Checking the Package Contents After opening the pa ckage, make sure al l of the following it ems are present.
15 Chapter 2 Ins tallation Installing the AIT Library The library weigh s about 13.5 kg (29.8 lb.) and has the following dimensi ons. Before installing the library, make sure t hat the surface on which you are placing it is large and st rong enough.
16 Chapter 2 Ins tallation With the ACY-RK81 rack moun ting kit (sold separately ), the AIT library can be installed on an EIA-standard, univ er sal pitch 19-inch rack. Contact your dealer for inform ation about the ra ck mounting kit. Note Install the AIT library on a horizontal surface near an AC power outle t.
17 Chapter 2 Ins tallation Connecting to the Host Computer Connect the AIT library and the host comp uter with a SC SI ca ble. This section explains ge neral connecting steps. Conn ect the library with the appropriate SCSI cable, depending on th e AIT drive.
18 Chapter 2 Ins tallation 2 Attach the provided terminat or to the other connector. Setting the DIP Switches DIP switch settings determine whether el ectric power is supplied to the SCSI terminator (when multiple SCSI devices are connected). The default fac tory setting of the DIP switch es is as follows.
19 Chapter 2 Ins tallation 1 Press the power switch to turn off the power. 2 Use a pointed object such as a mac h inist’s screwdriver to change the settings of the DIP switches. 3 Press the power switch to turn on the power. Connecting SCSI Peripheral Devices SCSI peripheral devices can be connecte d to the SCSI connectors of the AIT library.
20 Chapter 2 Ins tallation 1 Press the power switch on the rear of t he library. The messages on the right appears and the startup process begins. (Startup takes se veral minutes.) When the sta rtup process en ds, the library enters the time sett ing mode.
21 Chapter 2 Ins tallation Notes • The date and time cannot be updated when the AIT library is off. Fo r this reason we recommend that you set the date and time each time you turn on the library. • If the library is left idle for fi ve minutes, the status display appears automatically.
22 Chapter 2 Ins tallation • After turning the AIT libr ary po wer off, wait at least 10 seconds before turning it on again. • Before tran sport make sure that yo u turn off the AIT library using the procedure above, and that the transport scre w is in the Sh ipping positio n.
23 Chapter 2 Ins tallation 4 Set the month, day, and year. 1 When the month digits flash, use the V and v buttons to set the month, then press the [ENTER] button. 2 When the day digits flash, use t he V and v buttons to set the day, then press the [ENTER] button.
24 Chapter 2 Ins tallation About SCSI parity When the SCSI parity function is enable d, parity checks ar e performed on all data passing through the SCSI bus. The factory default settings for SC SI parity are as follows: • Library: Enabled (YES) • AIT Drive: Enabled (YES) Caution Do not duplica te SCSI IDs.
25 Chapter 2 Ins tallation Setting the Cartridg es Prepare a cartridge and set it into the AIT library. Preparing the Cartridg e Check the erase-protection tab and prepa r e your cartridge for use. If you are using a model equipped with a bar code reader, yo u can manage cartridges with bar code labels.
26 Chapter 2 Ins tallation 2 Check whether the erase-protection tab is set to the writ e-enable positio n. If the tab is orange, data can be written to the ca rtridge . Setting the Car tridge Set the cartridge into the AIT library. Wh en setting the cartrid ge, specify the slot by its element address.
27 Chapter 2 Ins tallation 6 When “[EN TER] to activa te” appears, press the [ENTER] button. The cartridge dock shutter opens. 7 Insert the cartridge in the slot.
28 Chapter 2 Ins tallation 8 If you selected “1. Sing le Mode” in step 4, press the [CANCEL] button. Note Even if you selected “1. Single Mode” in step 4, you can insert a differen t cartrid ge by using the V and v buttons to select the slot element address, and then pressing the [ENTER] button.
29 Chapter 2 Ins tallation 10 When “[ENTER] to activate” appears, press the [ENTER] but ton. If you selected “1. Single Mode” in step 4, the di splay on the right appears. If you selected “2. Multiple Mode” in step 4, the display on the righ t appears.
30 Chapter 2 Ins tallation Notes • After connecting to the ne twork, a browser can be used to change networ k settings. • The AIT library does not support DNS. (You do not need to set the [Host], [Domain], or [DNS] settings in the procedure below.
31 Chapter 2 Ins tallation 8 When [[ENTER] to activate] appears, press the [ENTER] button. The display return s to “Net work”. 9 When you want to set the IP address, select “3.IP Address”, then press the [ENTER] button. • Select “YES” to use the IP a ddress assigned to the DHCP server.

34 Chapter 3 B asic Usage Chapter Basic Usage Overview This chapter explains the control panel, basic settings, handli ng the cartridges, element addresses assignments and daily maintenance. Control Panel The control panel can be used to conf igure the AIT library settings, the AIT drive settings and th e network settings.
35 Chapter 3 Basic Usage Viewing the Status Displa y During the no rmal active state, t he status information is displayed on th e LCD panel of the AIT library.

40 Chapter 3 Basic Usage • Press v to cycle forward through letters and numbers one at a time, and V to cycle backwards. [ENTER] button This button is u sed to finalize the displayed menu or v alue, set alphanumeri cal characters, and perform operations.
41 Chapter 3 Basic Usage Warnings When the AIT drive needs cleaning or a sp ecific part ne eds to be replaced upon reaching its periodic replacement time, a warning message is displayed on the LCD panel. The warning messages and their solutions are as foll ows: “Cleaning Request”: The AIT drive needs to be cleaned.
42 Chapter 3 Basic Usage Setting or Changing the Password A password can be set on the AIT libr ary. The password is u sed when accessing certain menus via Ethernet. This section explains the steps required to set or ch ange the password from the control panel.
43 Chapter 3 Basic Usage Basic Settings This section ex plains th e steps requir ed to confi gure the war ning message display, bar code, R-MIC and brightness o f the LCD panel using the Configuration Menu on the contr ol panel. Caution There exist LIB-81 AIT library model s without bar code or R-MIC readers.
44 Chapter 3 Basic Usage Setting the Bar Code You should only conf igure “Barcode” of the Configuration Menu so that the bar code labels affi xed to cartridges can b e read when your AIT library is equipped with a bar code reader. Be fore modifyi ng this setting, make sure that your LIB-81 AIT library is eq uipp ed with a bar code reader.
45 Chapter 3 Basic Usage If you change this setting to “YES”, it will take longer for the inventory to be completed when the AIT library star ts or when you set a cartridge. Note The R-MIC functio n can also be se t through a browser. 1 At the status display, press the [MENU] button for two second s.

48 Chapter 3 Basic Usage Assigned Element Addresses An element is a physical location wher e a cartridge can be kept. Applications use element addresses to differentiate be tween t he elements of the AIT library. In this library, the element addresses are assigned to the cartridge slots and the AIT drives in the followin g manner.
49 Chapter 3 Basic Usage Storing • Store cartridges in an appropriate environment. Store cartridges according to the temperatu re and other surrounding conditions wri tten on th e package. Also, try to kee p the temperature and humidity of th e environment constant .

(Nothing appears on the second line.) 1 Eject the cartridge and press the [CANCEL] button. Caution Do not put your fingers in the slot when it is moving, as this could result in inju ries.

59 Chapter 4 Operating t he AIT Librar y Mo ving the Car tridg es It is possible to move a cartridge from a slot to the AIT drive or vice versa. Set the cartridge in the slot before performing the procedu re below. When moving a cartridge, specify the slot wi th the element address.

When diagnosing is completed , the result of the diagnosis is displayed on “Result”. Firmware Upload In “Firmware Upload”, the firmware of the AIT library ca n be uploaded.

90 Appendix 3 Use something thin like a precision scre w driver to press button on th e side of the library. The end of the air filter i s slightly ejected. 4 Insert a fing ernail into the side groo ve and remove the filter. 5 Insert the new air filter.
91 Appendix Changing the Air Filter 2 • Depending on the shape of the fr ont panel, the air filter and method for changing the air filter may differ. • Once a year, change th e air filter of the AIT librar y. Contac t your deal er if you wish to buy additional air filters.
92 Appendix Troubleshooting Before contacting a Sony Servi ce center, plea se check the following items. If the problem persists, contac t a Sony Service center. The AIT library does not work. • Verify th at the pow er switch is turned o n. • Verify that t he power cable is connecte d correctly.
93 Appendix • Verify whether the host computer was turned on less th an 10 seconds after turning on the library. If the host comput er is turned on too soon after turning on the library, the host computer may not detect the SCSI devices. When using DHCP, wait a least 30 seconds.
94 Appendix • To turn off the power to the AIT library, perform the shu tdown procedure described in “Turn the Power Off” (page 21) in Chapter 2. After pressing the front power standby switch , press the power switch on the rear of the AIT library.

97 Appendix About SCSI Components The SCSI system is composed of the follow ing compone nts. • Initiator This is the host computer system us ed to transfer co mmands. The system consists of the application software, th e operating system, the device driver, the SCSI adapter card, etc.
98 Appendix Error Code List When an error occurs in the AIT librar y, an error code appear s on the LCD panel. The following is a list of error codes that are displayed on the LCD panel.
