11 English Indicators The computer has three easy-to-read status icons on the upper-right above the keyboard.In addition, there are four indicators located on the front panel. 1. Charging: the light shows am be r when the battery is charging. 2. Fully charged: light shows green when in AC mode.
12 English Using the keyboard The keyboard has full-size d keys and an embedded keypa d, separate cursor keys, two Windows keys and twelve fu nction k eys . Lock keys The keyboard has three lock keys whic h you can togg le on and off. Lock Key Description Caps Lock When Caps Lock is on, all al phabetic characters typed are in uppercase.
13 English Embedded numeric keypad The embedded numeric keypad func tions like a desktop numeric keypad. It is indi cated by small ch aracters located on the upper right corner of the keycaps. Desired Access Num Lock On Num Lock Off Type numbers Use embedded keypad in the same way as the numeric keypad o n a standard keybo ard.
14 English Windows keys The keyboard has two keys that pe rform Windows-spec if ic fun ctions. Key Description Windows key Pressed alone, this key has the same effect as clicking on the Windows Start button ; it launches the Start menu.
15 English Hot keys The computer employs hot keys or ke y combinat ions to access m ost of the computer’s controls like sc reen brightness, volume ou tput and the BIOS Utility. To activate hot keys, pres s and hold the < Fn> key bef ore pressing the other k ey in the hot ke y combin ation.
16 English Fn-F5 Display toggle Switches display output between the dis play scree n, ex terna l monitor (if connected) and both the display screen and external monitor. Fn-F6 Screen blank Turns the display screen backlight off to save power. Press any key to return.
17 English The Euro Symbol If your k eyboard layo ut is set to Uni ted States-I nternati onal, Unit ed Kingdom or if you have a keyb oard with a European layout, you can type the Euro symbol on your keyboard. 1 Open a text editor or word processor. 2H o l d < Alt Gr> and then press the Euro symbol at the upper-center of the ke yboard.
18 English Launch keys Located above the keyboard ne xt to the power button are two buttons. Th ese button s are called l aun ch keys. They are de signated as the Internet brows er, and the Acer Empowering Key " ". Press the Empowering Key " " to run the Acer eManager.
19 English Touchpad The built -in touchp ad is a poin ting de vice that sen ses movement on its surface. This means the cursor respon ds as you move your finger on the surface of the touchpad. The central location on the palmrest provides optimum comfort a nd support.
20 English Note: Keep your fingers dry and clean when using the tou chpad. Also keep the touchpad dry and clean . The touchpad is sensitive to finger movement, hence, the lighter the touch, the better the response. Tapping harder will no t increase the touchpad’s responsiveness.
21 English Ejecting the optical drive tray To eject the optical drive tray when the computer is turned on, press the drive eject button. When the p ower is of f, you ca n eject t he drive tray us ing the emergency ejec t hole.
22 English Audio The computer comes with 16-bit high -fidelity AC'9 7 ste reo audi o, and dual stereo speak ers. Adjusting the volume Adjusting the volume on the comput er is as easy as pressing some buttons. The volume can be controlle d by using eith er the dedicat ed volume media k eys loca ted on the front of the no tebook or the hot keys.
23 English Using system utilities Acer eManager Innovative Acer eManagement software is designed for easy access to frequently used functions. At the pres s of the Acer Empowering Key " ", the Acer eManager user interfac e appears, featuring two main settings: Acer eSet ting and Acer ePres entation.
24 English Launch Manager Launch Manager allo ws you to set the two launch keys located above the keyboard. "Launch keys" on page 18 for th e locati on of t he launc h keys. You can ac cess the Launch Manager by clicki ng on Start , All Programs , and then Launc h Manager to start the appl icatio n.
25 English Acer GridVista (dual- display compatible) Acer GridVista is a handy utility th at offers four pr e-defined display settings so you ca n view multiple windows on the same screen. To access this function , please go to " Start "-" All Prog rams " and click on " Acer GridVista ".

27 English Moving around with your notebook PC This sect ion gives you tips an d hints to con sider when moving around or traveli ng with your computer. Disconnecting from the desktop Follow these steps to disconnect your computer from external accessor ies: 1 Save your work in progress.
28 English you can put the computer in Sleep mode by pressing <Fn> + <F4> . Then close and latch the display. When you are ready to use the comp uter again, unla tch and open the display; then press and release the power button. Note: If the Sleep indicator is o f f, the computer has entered Hibernation mode and is turn ed off.
29 English • Pack the computer in a protecti ve case that can prevent the computer from sl iding around and cushion it if it should fall . Caution: Avoid packing item s next to the to p cover of the computer. Pressure against the top cover can dam age the screen.

Connectivity options Ports allow you to co nnect peripheral devices to your computer as you would with a de sktop PC. 36 English Built-in network feature The built-in ne twork feature allows you to connect your c omputer to an Ether net-bas ed netw ork. To use the network feature, conn ect an Ether net cable f rom the network ja ck on t he comput er to a network jack or hub on your network.

IEEE 1394 port The computer's IEEE 1394 port allo ws you to connect to an IEEE 1394- compatible device like a vide o camera or digital camera.
38 English PC Card slot The Type II PC Card slot of the comp uter ac cepts PC Cards that enhance the usability and expandability of the computer. Thes e cards should have a PC Ca rd logo on them. PC Cards (formerly PCMCIA) are add- on car ds fo r porta ble co mpute rs, giving you expa nsion poss ibiliti es long afford ed by desktop PCs.
39 English Installing memory Follow these steps to install memory: 1 Turn off the computer, unplug th e AC adaptor (if connected) and remove the battery pack. Then turn the computer over to access its base. 2 Remove the screws from the memo ry cover; then lift up and remove the memory cover.
40 English BIOS Utility The BIOS Utility is a hard ware conf iguration program built into your computer' s BIOS. Your computer is alread y properly config ured and optimized, and you do not need to run this utili ty. However, if you encounter configuration problems, you may n eed to ru n it.
41 English Using software Playing DVD movies When the DVD drive module i s installed in the o ptical drive b ay, you can play DVD movies on your comp uter. 1 Eject the DVD tray and insert a DV D movie disc; then close the DVD tray. Important! When you launch the DVD pl ayer for the first time, the program asks you to enter the region code.
42 English Power management This comput er has a built-i n powe r management unit that moni tors system activity. System activity refers to any activity involvin g one or more of the following devices: keyb oard, mouse, floppy drive, hard disc, peripherals connected to the se rial and parallel ports, a nd video memory.
