5 Be sure to connect the power cord only to a power outlet that meets the specified voltage and current requirements. Also make certain the out let is properly grounded. Be sure to allow the required space aroun d the machine for servicing and proper ventilati on.
6 ENVIR ONMENT AL INFORMA TION USING THE MANU AL This machine has been designed t o provide convenient copy ing features in a minim um amount of office space and with maximum operationa l ease. To get full use of all machine features , be sure to familiarize yourself with this manual and the machine.
7 THE MEANING OF "R" IN ORIGINAL AND P APER SIZE INDICA TIONS An "R" appearing at the end of an original or paper size (5-1/2 " x 8-1/2"R, 8-1/2" x 11"R, etc.) indicate s that the original or paper is oriented h orizontally as shown below.
8 MAIN FEA TURES High-speed laser copying • First-copy time* is only 4.8 seconds (M X-M260) or 4.5 seco nds (MX-M310). • Cop ying speed is 26 copies/min. (MX-M260) or 31 copies/min. (MX-M31 0). This is ideal for b usiness use and provides a big bo ost to workplace producti vity .
9 1 Chapter 1 BEFORE USING THE MA CHINE This chapter contain s basic information that should be read before using the machin e. 11 BEFORE USING TH E MA CHIN E 1 OPERA TION P ANEL T ouch panel The machine status , messages and touch ke ys are displa yed on the panel. The displa y will show the status of printing, cop ying or network scanning according to the mode that is selected.
12 BEFORE USING THE MACHINE T OUCH P ANEL Using the touch panel [Example 1] Items on th e touch pa nel are selected by to uching the key associated with the item. A beep will sound to conf irm that the item was selected and the key will be highlighted .
13 BEFORE USING TH E MA CHIN E 1 Job status screen (com mon to copy, print, network scan and fax) This screen appears when th e [JOB STATUS] key on the operation panel is pressed. A job list showing the cu rrent job and the stored jobs or a list showing complete d jobs can be displayed.
14 PO WER ON AND OFF The power switch is located on the left side of th e machine. PO WER ON Turn the power switch to the "ON" position. • When the power switch is turned to the "ON" position, the message "WARMING UP. A COPYING JOB CAN BE SET NOW.
15 BEFORE USING TH E MA CHINE 1 INITIAL SETTINGS The machine reverts to the init ial settings wh en it is first turn ed on, when the [CLEAR ALL] key ( ) is pr essed, or the preset "auto clear time" e lapses after t h e last copy is made in any mode.
16 LO ADING P APER When a tra y runs out of paper , a message appears in the tou ch panel. L oad paper in the tray. P APER The specifications for the types and sizes of pa per that can be loaded in th e paper trays are shown below. For best results, use only SHARP recomm ended paper.
17 BEFORE USING TH E MA CHIN E 1 Special papers Follow these guidelines w hen using special papers. Envelopes Do not use the following envelopes (Misfeeds will occur.). • Envelopes with metal tabs, clasps, strings, holes, or windows. • Envelopes with r ough fibers, carbon paper, or glossy surfaces .
18 BEFORE USING THE MACHINE LO ADING P APER Make sure that the machine is not copying, printing , or printing a received fax, and then follow these steps to load paper. Loading the paper in the paper tray 1 Pull out the paper tray until it stops. If you are loading the same size of paper as was loaded previously, go to step 4.
19 BEFORE USING TH E MA CHIN E 1 Loading paper in the bypass tray 1 Unfold the bypass tray. To enable correct detection of the pa per size, be sure to pull out the bypass tray extension. 2 Set the paper gu ides to the copy paper width. 3 Insert the copy paper (print side down) all the way into the bypass tray.
20 BEFORE USING THE MACHINE CHANGING A TRA Y’S P APER TYPE AND P APER SIZE SETTINGS When you change t he paper in a tray, follow the steps below to cha nge the tray’s pa per type and pa per size settin gs.
21 BEFORE USING TH E MA CHIN E 1 Setting the paper type in the bypass tray Use eithe r of the follow ing two m ethods to set the bypass tray's paper ty pe setting. From the [SYSTEM SETTINGS] key 1 Load paper in the bypass tray as explained in "Loadi ng paper in the bypass tray" (p.
22 2 Chapter 2 COPY FUNCTIONS This chapter explains basic copying functi ons such as norma l copying, reduction or enlarg ement, and exposure adjustm ent. MAIN SCREEN OF COPY MODE The main screen of copy mode shows message s, keys, and sett ings that are used fo r copying.
23 2 NORMAL COPYING COPYING FR OM THE DOCUMENT GLASS 1 Open the RSPF and pl ace the original face down on the document glass. [How to pl ace the ori ginal] Align the corner or the original with t he tip of the arrow ( ) at the left rear corner of the glass as shown in the illustration.
24 COPY FUNCTIONS COPYING FR OM THE RSPF 1 Make sure that an original has not been left on the document glass and then close the RSPF. If an original remains on the docum ent glass afte r a copy was made, "REMOVE THE ORIGINAL FR OM THE DOCUMENT GLASS.
25 COPY FUNCTIONS 2 POINTS T O NO TE WHEN MAKING COPIES Document glass and RSPF • Paper in a different orien t ation from the o riginal can be selected if the auto paper se lect or auto image function has been selected. In this case, the im age of the origin al will be rotated.
26 COPY FUNCTIONS Copying originals of mixe d length (Mixed feeding) When using the RSPF, originals of mixed length can be fed together as long as the width of the originals is the same. To copy originals of mixed length, follo w these steps: 1 Touch the [SPECI AL MODES] key.
27 COPY FUNCTIONS 2 BYP ASS FEED (special paper) The bypass tr ay must be us ed to feed special p apers such as tr ansparency film and labels. Th e bypass tray can a lso be used to feed standa rd copy paper. 1 Place the original (s). (p.23, p.24) 2 Insert the paper (print face down) all the way into the bypass tray.
28 A UT OMA TIC TW O-SIDED COPYING Two originals can be auto m atically copied onto both side s of a single shee t of paper. When the RSPF is used, two-sided copies of t wo-sided originals can easily be made . USING THE DOCUMENT GLASS 1 Place the original on the document glass.
29 COPY FUNCTIONS 2 5 Make sure that a suit able paper size is automatically selected, or select another size using the [PAPER SELECT] key. 6 Select the number of copies and any other desired copy settings, and then press the [START] key ( ). The original for t he front side is scanned.
30 EXPOSURE ADJUSTMENT SELECTING THE ORIGINAL IMA GE TYPE AND MANU ALL Y ADJUSTING THE EXPOSURE [AUTO] is selected by default f or automatic adjustment of the exposure according to the origina l.
31 2 REDUCTION/ENLARGEMENT/ZOOM There are three ways to enlar ge and reduce co pies: ● Automatic ratio selection acco rding to the pap er size .......... ................ . AUTOMATIC RATIO SELECTION (below ) ● Specifying a ra tio with the reduc e key, enlarge key, or zoom key .
32 COPY FUNCTIONS MANU AL RA TIO SELECTION There are four preset reduction ratios and four preset enlarg ement ratios. In addition , the [ZOOM] ke ys ( , ) can b e pressed to select the ratio in increments of 1%. 1 Place the original (s). (p.23, p.24) 2 Touch the [CO PY RATIO] key.
33 COPY FUNCTIONS 2 6 Make sure that a suit able paper size is automatically selected, or select another size using the [PAPER SELECT] key. If AUTO PAPER SELECT is enable d, the appropriate co py paper size is automatically selected based on the original size and selected copy ratios.
34 COPY FUNCTIONS 4 Touch the [X] key. The [X] key is selected (highlighted ) by default, so there is normally no need to perfo rm this step (Go to step 5.). If the [X] key is not highlighted , perform this step. 5 Use the reduction, enlargement, and [ZOOM] keys ( / ) to change the copy ratio in the horizontal (X) direction.
35 2 INTERR UPTING A COPY R UN A copy run can be tempora rily interrupte d to allow another copy j ob to be performed. When the other job is f inished, the copy run will resume using the original copy settings. 1 Press the [INTERR UPT] key ( ) to interrupt the copy run.
36 3 Chapter 3 CONVENIENT COPY FUNCTIONS This chapter exp lains special finishin g functions and ot her convenient fu nctions. COPY FINISHING FUNCTIONS This section explains the sor t, group, and of fset functions, as well as th e staple sort fun ction which is used t o staple output collate d with the so rt function wh en a finisher is installed .
37 CONVENIENT COPY FUNCTIONS 3 1 Place the originals in the RSPF or on the document glass. (p.23, p.24) If originals are placed in the RSPF, the sor t function is a utomatically selected. (To disable this function, see the "6. SYSTEM SETTINGS (ADMINISTRATOR)".
38 CONVENIE NT COPY FUNCTIONS ST APLE SOR T (when the finisher (MX-FN13) is installed) This function collates the copies, sta ples each set, and deliv ers the sets to the of fset tray . The sta ple sort function can only be used when a finisher is installed.
39 CONVENIENT COPY FUNCTIONS 3 1 Place the original (s). (p.23, p.24) 2 Touch the [OUTPUT] key. 3 Touch the [STAPLE SORT] key. When the [STAPLE SORT] key is selected, the offset t ray is automatically selected as the output tray. The top tray and ce nter tray cannot be used.
40 SPECIAL MODES When the [SPECIAL MODES] key in the ma in screen of copy mode is touc hed, the special modes screen will appear. This screen contains the fo llowing special function keys. [MARGIN SHIFT] ke y (p.42) Use this to shift the image on the cop y paper to create bind ing margins.
41 CONVENIENT COPY FUNCTIONS 3 GENERAL PR OCEDURE FOR USING THE SPECIAL FUNCTIONS 1 Touch the [SPECI AL MODES] key. 2 Touch the key of t he desired special mode. Example: Selecting the margin sh ift function Procedures f or modes that require fur ther settings are explained star t ing on the next page.
42 CONVENIE NT COPY FUNCTIONS MARGIN SHIFT COPY The margin shift function is used to automatically shift t he text or image on the copy paper approxima t ely 1/2" in its initial setting. 1 Touch the [MARGIN SHI FT] key in the special modes screen.
43 CONVENIENT COPY FUNCTIONS 3 ERASE COPY The eras e function is used to er ase the shad ow lines on co pies that a re produced when copying thick originals or books. The erase mode s that can be selected ar e show n below. The erase width is initially set to 1/2".
44 CONVENIE NT COPY FUNCTIONS DU AL P A GE COPY The dual page copy funct ion produces separate copies of two adjoining pages on the document gla ss. It is especially useful when copying books and other bound d ocuments. [Example] C opying the right and left pages of a book 1 Touch the [DUAL PAGE COPY] key in the special m odes screen.
45 CONVENIENT COPY FUNCTIONS 3 P AMPHLET COPY The pamphlet copy functi on is used to arrange copies in the proper or der for center-s tapling and folding into a booklet. Two origin al pages are copied ont o each side of th e copy paper, such that a total of four pages are copied onto each sheet.
46 CONVENIE NT COPY FUNCTIONS JOB BUILD MODE Use this function when you need to copy more originals than can be placed in the RSPF at once. (T he maximum number of originals that can be placed in the RSPF at once is 100.
47 CONVENIENT COPY FUNCTIONS 3 MUL TI SHO T COPY The multi shot copy function is used to copy two or four originals o nto one sheet of co py paper in a specified order.
48 CONVENIE NT COPY FUNCTIONS ORIGINAL SIZE If you wish to use the paper other than the aut omatically sele cted original size, origin al size setting is specified by the special modes. The mix feed ing setting (p.26) is also selected her e. 1 Touch the key and then touch the [ORIGINAL SIZE] k ey in the special modes menu screen.
49 CONVENIENT COPY FUNCTIONS 3 CO VER COPY Cover cop y mode is us ed to add a cover to t he front or back, or both the front and ba ck, of a multipage document.
50 CONVENIE NT COPY FUNCTIONS 1 Touch the key and then touch the [COVER] key in the special modes menu screen. The cover setting screen will appear. The cover icon ( , etc.) will also appear in the screen to indicate that the function is turned on. 2 Select the cover(s) that you wish to add.
51 CONVENIENT COPY FUNCTIONS 3 B/W REVERSE COPY The B/W REVERSE feature is used to reverse black and white in a co py to create a negative image. • When the B/W reverse f unction is selec ted, the exposure mode will be automatically set to TEXT mode.
52 CONVENIE NT COPY FUNCTIONS CARD SHO T The front and back of a card can be copied onto one shee t of paper. This function is convenient for making co pies for certificat ion purposes and helps save paper. • Copying is only possible on standard size paper.
53 CONVENIENT COPY FUNCTIONS 3 5 Place the original on the document glass. Place the front sid e of the original face down and close the docum ent cover/RSPF. 6 Select the number of copies and any other desired copy settings, and then press the [START] key ( ).
54 4 Chapter 4 NETW ORK SCANNER FUNCTION INTR ODUCTION The network scanner expansion Kit ena bles t he machine to be used as a network scanner. * Memory can be adde d by installing a commercially available 128 MB or 256 MB mem ory module (144- pin SDRAM SODIMM).
55 4 ABOUT THE NETW ORK SCANNER FUNCTION When the net work scanner functi on is added to t he machine, a do cument or photo can be scanned int o an image file and sent over a network or the Internet to a file server , e-mail destinat ion, or your own computer.
56 SETTINGS AND PR OGRAMMING REQ UIRED FOR THE NETW ORK SCANNER FEA TURE To use the Network Scanner feat ure, settings for the SM TP serv er, DNS server, and destinatio n addresses must be established. To establish the settings, use a computer that is connected to the same ne twork as the machine to access the machine's Web page.
57 NETWORK SCANNER FUNCTION 4 ABOUT THE WEB P A GE When you access the Web page in the machine, the following page will ap pear in your browser. A menu frame appe ars on the left side of t he page. When you click an item in the menu, a screen ap pears in the right fram e that allows yo u to establish settings for that item.
58 NETWORK SCANNER FUNCTION B ASIC SETTINGS FOR NETW ORK SCANNING Click "Network Scanning" in the menu fr ame, and then esta blish the re quired settings.
59 NETWORK SCANNER FUNCTION 4 SMTP SER VER AND DNS SER VER SETTINGS SMTP is used to transmit e-mail th at is sent using Scan to E-mail or Scan to FTP (Hyperlink). To use the s e transmission met hods, your SMTP server sett ings must be configur ed. Configuring SMTP server settings 1 Click "Services" in the menu frame.
60 NETWORK SCANNER FUNCTION CONFIGURING LD AP SER VER SETTINGS (WHEN USING AN LD AP SER VER) If mail addresses are manage d on your network by an LDAP server, the e - mail addresses stored in the LDAP server can be used for Scan to E-ma il.

62 NETWORK SCANNER FUNCTION SETTING UP DESTINA TION INFORMA TION To store the name and address of a destination in a one-touch key, click "Destination" in the Web page menu frame. "Destination" can also be used to edit or clear stored destinations.

For this reason, there is no need to sto re the Scan to Desktop destination in the We b page.
65 NETWORK SCANNER FUNCTION 4 Storing Groups (Scan to E-mail) If you are using Scan to E-mail, a scanned image can be sent to multiple destina tions in a single operation. 1 Click "Destination" in the menu frame. 2 Click "Group". 3 Enter the destinat ion information .
66 NETWORK SCANNER FUNCTION Editing and deleting programme d transmission destinations To edit or delete progr ammed destinations, click "Destination" in the menu f rame of the Web pa ge. 1 Click "Destination" in the menu frame of the Web page.
67 NETWORK SCANNER FUNCTION 4 ST ORING THE SENDER INFORMA TION (Scan to E-mail) Use this procedure to sto re the sender inf ormation (sende r name and e-mail address) that appear s when you send an image by Sc an to E-mail. Up to 200 sender s can be stored (only one se nder can be se lected for a tran smission).
68 NETWORK SCANNER FUNCTION PR O TECTING INFORMA TION PR OGRAMMED IN THE WEB P A GE ("P ass wor ds") Passwords can be estab lished to protect th e settings and informa tion stored in the Web page. Note that it is not necessary to set passwords; the networ k scanner functionality can also be used without passwords.
69 NETWORK SCANNER FUNCTION 4 RESTRICTING USE OF THE NETW ORK SCANNER FUNCTION (USER A UTHENTICA TION) Use of the network scanner fu nction can be restricted by me ans of user passwords stored in an LDAP server .
70 INITIAL SCREEN OF SCANNER MODE The condition setting screen of scanner mode is displayed by pressing the [SCAN] key (refe r to the operation manual for copier) while t he copy mode, print mod e , fax mode, or job stat us screen appears in the touch panel.
71 NETWORK SCANNER FUNCTION 4 Address book screen Touch the [ADDRESS BOOK] key in the c ondition setting scr een (previous page) to display the sc reen shown below at right.
72 SENDING AN IMA GE B ASIC TRANSMISSION METHOD 1 Make sure the machine is in scanner mode. When the [SCA N] key light is on, the machine is in scanner mode. If th e light is not on, press th e [SCAN] key. If user auth entication is enabled, you m ust log in.
73 NETWORK SCANNER FUNCTION 4 8 Touch the one-touch key of the desired destination. The key you touched is highlighted . If you touch the wrong key, touch the key again to cancel the selection. The key display will return to normal. 9 Enter a file nam e for the scanned image.
74 NETWORK SCANNER FUNCTION TRANSMISSION METHODS FOR SCAN T O E-MAIL The destination for a Sca n to E-mail transmission can be se lected from the address book or entered man ually.
75 NETWORK SCANNER FUNCTION 4 Sending an image by selecting an e-mail address in an LDAP server To use an LDAP server, the LDAP serv er settings mu st be configured in the Web page. 1 Perform steps 1 through 6 of "BASIC TRANSMISSION METH OD".
76 NETWORK SCANNER FUNCTION SCANNING AND TRANSMITTING A TW O-SIDED ORIGINAL (when an RSPF is installed) Follow these steps to automat ically scan a two-sided original. 1 Make sure the machine is in scanner mode and then load the document in the RSPF. (p.
77 NETWORK SCANNER FUNCTION 4 SCANNING A LARGE NUMBER OF ORIGINALS (when an RSPF is installed) If you have a large nu mber of originals, the originals can be scann ed in batches using the RSPF. 1 Make sure the machine is in scanner mode and then load the document in the RSPF.
78 SCANNING SETTINGS (ORIGINAL SIZE, QU ALITY , RESOLUTION, FILE FORMA T , AND SEND SETTING) When sending an image, you can change the original scan size, q uality, resolution, file format, and file name.
79 NETWORK SCANNER FUNCTION 4 SELECTING THE QU ALITY You can adjust the quality man ually to match the t y pe of original. Af ter loading the original in scanner mode, follow the steps below. The fact ory default se ttings are "TEXT/PHOTO" for the image qualit y, and "AUTO" for the densit y.
80 NETWORK SCANNER FUNCTION SELECTING THE RESOLUTION The resolution for scanning an original can be select ed. Load the or iginal in scanner mode and then f ollow the steps below. The factory defa ult setting for the resolut ion is "300 dpi".
81 NETWORK SCANNER FUNCTION 4 SELECTING THE FILE FORMA T You can select the format of the image file that will be created (file type, co mpression mode, and pag es per file). The factory def ault settings are "TIFF" for the file type, " MMR (G4)" for the compr ession mode, and "ALL" for the pages per file.
82 NETWORK SCANNER FUNCTION CHANGING THE SEND SETTINGS The file name of the scann ed image can be changed. When performin g Scan to E-ma il, the subject and send er can also be changed. If the send settings are no t changed, t hese items are entered automatically using the information stored in the W eb page.
83 4 CANCELING AN E-MAIL/FTP TRANSMISSION You can cancel a transmission job th at is in progress. Ca ncellation is do ne from the scanner job status screen . 1 Press the [JOB STATUS] key. 2 Touch the [SCAN TO] key. 3 Touch the job key of the transmission job that you wish to cancel.
84 MET AD A T A DELIVER Y (D A T A ENTR Y) When the application integ r ation module is installed a nd an image file is generated for a scan send t ransmission, metadata (data ind icating the att ributes of the image file and how it is to be processed) can be ge nerated based on pre-stored informa tion and transmitted as a separate file.
85 4 PREP ARA TIONS FOR MET AD A T A TRANSMISSION SETTINGS REQUIRED IN THE WEB P A GES All settings related to me tadata are configured in the Web pages. (Admin istrator righ ts are required.) To configure metadat a settings, click [Met adata Settings] in the Web page menu frame.
86 TRANSMITTING MET AD A T A Follow the steps below to select a metadata set, enter each item, and perfo rm metadata transmission. 1 Touch the [DATA ENTRY] key. 2 Touch the key of t he metadata that you wish to use. 3 Touch the [OK] key. 4 The keys of the it ems stored in the metadata set will appear.

88 NETWORK SCANNER FUNCTION M E TA D ATA F I E L D S The following three typ es of metadata are included in t he XML file that is transmitted. ● Data automatically gener ated by the machine: These data ar e always included in the XML file and are automatically stored on your computer.
89 4 CHECKING THE IP ADDRESS To check the IP address of the ma chine, print out the settings list from t he operation panel of the machine. 1 Press the [SYSTEM SETTINGS] key. The system settings screen will appear. 2 Touch the [LIST PRINT] key. 3 Touch the [PRINTER TEST PAGE] key.
90 5 Chapter 5 SYSTEM SETTINGS (GENERAL) SYSTEM SETTINGS The system settings let yo u adjust certain featur es of the machine to better suit your needs. The system settings consist of sett ings that are used by ge neral users, and settings that can only be configured by an administrator of the machine.
