12 English Indicators The computer has three easy-to-read status icons on the upper-right above the keyboard. Icon Function Description Caps Lock Lights when Caps Lock is activated. Num Lock Lights when Num Lock is activated. Media activity Lights when the hard disk or optical drive is active.
13 English In addition, there are two indicators at the front panel. Even when the cover is clos ed, the state or features can sti ll be seen. 1. Charging: the light shows ambe r whe n the battery is charging. 2. Fully charged: light shows green when in AC mode.
14 English Using the keyboard The keyboard has full-sized keys and an embedded keypad, separate cursor keys, two Windows keys and twelve fu nction keys . Lock keys The keyboard has three lock keys whic h you can toggle on an d off. Lock Key Description Caps Lock When Caps Lock is on, all alpha betic characters typed are in uppercase.
15 English Embedded numeric keypad The embedded numeric keypad func tions like a desktop numeric keypad. It is indicated b y small ch aracters located on the upper right corner of the keycaps. To simplify the keyboard legend, cursor-cont rol key symbols are not printed on the keys .
16 English Windows keys The keyboard has two keys that pe rform Windows-spec ific functio ns. Key Description Windows key Pressed alone, this key has the same effect as clicking on the Windows Start button ; it launches the Start menu. It can also be used with other keys to pro vide a variety of functions: + Tab Activates the next Taskbar button.
17 English Hot keys The computer employs hot keys or ke y combinations to acces s most of the computer’s controls like screen brightness, volume output an d the BIOS Utility. To activate hot keys, press and hold the Fn key before pr essing the other key i n the hot key comb ination.
18 English Fn-F5 Display toggle Switches display output between the display screen, external monitor (if connected) and bo th the display screen and external monitor. Fn-F6 Screen blank Turns the display screen backlight off to save power. Press any key to return.
19 English The Euro Symbol If your keybo ard layout i s set to United States-I nternational , United Kingdom or if you have a keyboard with a European layout, you can type the Euro symbol on your keyboard.
20 English Launch keys Located at the upper-right above the ke yboard are four buttons. These buttons ar e called l aunch keys. They are designated as the mail, Web browser, Empowering Key “ “ and programmable keys. Press the Empowering Key “ “ to run the Acer eManager.
21 English Touchpad The built-in touchpad is a pointing de vice that sen ses movement on its surface. This means the cursor respon ds as you move your finger on the surface of the touchpad. The central lo cation on the palmrest provides optimum comfort and support.
22 English Note: Keep your fingers dry and clean wh en using the touchpad. Also keep the touchpad dry and clean. The tou chpad is sensitive to finger movement, hence, the lighter the touch, the better the response. Tapping harder will not increase th e touchpad’s responsiveness.
23 English Ejecting the optical (CD or DVD) drive tray To eject the optical drive tray when the computer is turned on, press the drive eject button. When the power is off, yo u can ejec t the drive tray using the emergency eject hole.
24 English Using a computer security lock A securi ty keyloc k notch, located on the rear of the computer, lets you connect a Kens ington-c ompatibl e computer security lock. Wrap a computer security lock cabl e around an immovable object such as a table or handle of a locked dr awer.
25 English Audio The computer comes with 16-bit high -fidelity AC'97 ste r eo audio, an d dual stereo speakers. Adjusting the volume Adjusting the volume on the comput er is as easy as pressing some buttons. See “Hot keys” on page 17 for more informati on on adjust ing the speaker volume.
26 English Using system utilities Acer eManager Innovative Acer eManagement soft ware is design ed for easy acc ess to frequently used func tions. At the press of Acer Empowering Key “ “ . , the Acer eManager user interfac e appears, featuring four main settings — Acer eSetting, Acer ePresentation, Acer ePowerManagement and Acer e Recovery.
27 English Launch Manager Launch Manager allows you to set the four launch keys located above the keyboard. "Launch keys" on page 20 for the loca tion of t he launch keys. You can access the Launch Manager by clicking on Start , All Programs , an d then Launch Manager to start the application.
28 English Acer GridVista Acer GridVista is a handy util ity th at offers four pr e-defined display settings fo r users to view m ultiple win dows on the same screen. To access this function, please go to “Start ” - ”All Progra ms” and click on “Acer GridVista” .
29 English Moving around with your Notebook PC This section gi ves you tips and hin ts to consider wh en moving around or traveling wi th your comp uter. Disconnecting from the desktop Follow these steps to disconnect your computer from external accessorie s: 1 Save your work in progress.
30 English you can put the computer in Sleep mode b y pressing < Fn >+< F4 >. Then close and latch the di splay. When you are ready to use the comp uter again, unla tch and open the display; then press and release the power button. Note: If the Sleep indicator is of f, the computer has entered Hibernation mode and turned off.
31 English • Pack the computer in a protecti ve case that can prevent the computer from slid ing around and cushio n it if it should fall . Caution: Avoid p acking items next to the top cover of th e computer. Pressure against the top cover can damage th e screen.
32 English Setting up a home office If you frequentl y work on your computer at h ome, you may want to purchase a secon d AC adaptor for use at home. With a second AC adaptor, you can avoid carrying th e extra weight to and from home.

35 English Entering passwords When a password is set, a password pro mpt appears in the ce nter of the display screen. • When the Supervisor Pa ssword is set, a pro mpt appears when you press < F2 > to enter the BIOS Utility at boot-up. • Type the Supervisor Password and pre ss < Enter > to access the BIOS Utility.

Connectivity options Ports allow you to co nnect peripheral devices to your comput er as you would with a desktop PC. 38 English Built-in network feature The built-in network feature allows you to connect your computer to an Ethern et-based ne twork. To use the network feature, conn ect an Ethernet c able from the network jack on the r ear of the co mputer to a network jack or hub on your network.

IEEE 1394 port The computer's IEEE 1 394 port allo ws you to connect to an IEEE 1394- compatible device like a vide o camera or digital camera.
40 English PC Card slot The Type II PC Card slot of the comp uter accepts PC Cards that enhance the usability and expandability of the computer. Thes e cards should have a PC Ca rd logo on the m. PC Cards (formerly PCMCIA) are add- on cards for po rtable co mputer s, giving you expans ion possibil ities long affo rded by desktop PCs.
41 English Installing memory Follow these steps to install m emory: 1 Turn off the computer, unplug th e AC adaptor (if connected) and remove the battery pack. Then turn the computer over to access its base. 2 Remove the screws from the memo ry cover; then lift up and remove the memory cover.
42 English BIOS Utility The BIOS Utility is a hardware conf iguration program built into your computer's B IOS. Your computer is already properly configured and optimised, and yo u do not need to run this utili ty. However, if you encounter configuration prob lems, you may need to run it.
43 English Using software Playing DVD movies When the DVD drive module is installed in the optical drive b ay, you can play DVD movies on your computer. 1 Eject the DVD tray and insert a DV D movie disc; then close the DVD tray. Important! Whe n you launch the DVD pl ayer for the first time, the programme asks you to enter th e region code.
44 English Power management This computer ha s a built-in powe r management unit that monitors system activity. System activity refers to any activity involving on e or more of the following devices: keyb oard, mouse, floppy drive, hard disc, peripherals connected to the se ria l and parallel ports, and video memory.

This player has the features and controls of a typical living room DVD player. When you insert a disc into the DV D drive, the movie begins playing automati cally.

This chapter shows you how to deal with common system problems. Read it before calling a technician if a problem oc curs. Solutions to more serious problems require opening up the computer. Do not attemp t to open the computer by yourself. Contact your dealer or an authorised service center for assistance.

Troubleshooting my comp uter 64 English Image is not full-screen. The computer display has a native resolution of 1 024 x 768 (XGA) for the 14.1"/15.0" screens. If you set th e resolution lowe r than this, the screen expands to fill the comput er display.
65 English The keyboard does not respond. Try attaching an external keyboard to a USB 2.0 port on the rear or left of the computer. If it works, cont act your dealer or an authorise d service center as the internal keyboard cable may be loose. The infrared port does not work.
Troubleshooting my comp uter 66 English Please note, on first booting your notebook, that you can skip the Internet Connection setup, as it is not necessary to affect the installation of your overall Oper ating System. After the Operating System is setup, you can proceed with the Intern et Connection setup.
