Getting Started 1-1 GETTING ST AR TED Use this sys tem for product freshness. The system consists of a Monar ch ® 9416 ® prin ter and a keyp ad with the FreshMar x™ appli cation.
1 - 2 Getting Started Connecting the Prin ter’s Power Supply To connect the power supply to the p rinter: Caution Do not to uch the e lectrical connecto rs while setting up the prin ter. El ectrostatic discharge can damage or destroy the printhea d or electroni c compon ents.

1 - 4 Getting Started Reading the Indicator Li ght The indicat or light monito rs the printer's status. Indicator Light Description GREEN Printer is on and ready to use. FLASHING GREEN Printer is pause d. Press the FEED button to resume printing .
Getting Started 1-5 Loading Labels Note: If you run out of labels while pr inting, do not turn off the pri nter when reloadi ng the labels. You may lose your data. The printer res umes printing when reloaded. 1. Remove and disc ard the tape or wrappin g from a new roll of la bels.
1 - 6 Getting Started 4. Remove a suppl y holder guide from one end of the suppl y holder. The supply holde r is normally attached with a line to t he inside of the printe r. 5. Slide a ro ll of labe ls onto th e supply hol der. Note: If the core diame ter on your roll of labels is 1 inch in d iameter, re move the 1.
Getting Started 1-7 7. Insert th e ends of the sup ply holder into t he slots in the supply roll moun t. Importa nt Informati on Make sure the pla stic line attac hing the supply holder to the pr inter is tucked down out of the way of the sup ply holder and supply hold er guides.
1 - 8 Getting Started 8. Adjust the suppl y guides to t heir widest position by turning th e dial. 9. Feed th e labels, p rinting side up , under the suppl y guides and over the pl aten roller.

Release the FEED button after the indica tor light starts flash ing ORANGE. The printer calibrates the die cut senso r, measures the label length, an d prints t he test la bels.

Using The Keypad 2-3 Connecting the Communication Cable To connect the serial cable fr om the print er to the keypad: 1. Turn off the pri nter and th e keypad bef ore connec ting the cab le. 2. Connect the se rial cable to th e (9-pin) serial por t on the back of t he printe r.
2-4 Using The Keypad 3. Connect t he other end of the s erial cable (9-pin) to the serial port on the right-hand sid e of the keypad. About the Keypad Use the F reshMarx appli cation to da te-label foo d items. The button description s, colors, and layout can be changed fo r each application .
Using The Keypad 2-5 Setting up the Fr eshMarx System IMPORTANT - Complete the following s teps before using the sys tem. To set up the system : 1. Press the Fre shMarx bu tton three times. SELECT DATE OR TI ME 2. Press the number 3 button . SENDING PRINT ER SETUP COMM AND TO PRINTER , PL EASE WAIT .
2-6 Using The Keypad To set the Ti me: 1. Press the Fre shMarx bu tton three times. SELECT DATE OR TI ME 2. Press the number 2 button . The display shows th e current time se tting. If this is correct , press the FreshMarx bu tton to return to the Main Displa y.
Using The Keypad 2-7 Processing the Product Use the F reshMarx appli cation to label any p roduct for freshness . All products are liste d on the buttons on the keypad. The numeric butt ons on the keypad allow you to enter th e quantit y of labels to be printed.

3-2 Using the Update Utility Before Y ou Begin Install t he Update Utility on a PC wi th Microsoft ® Windows ® 98 or gre ater. The PC shou ld also have Microsoft ® Office ® 2000 (or gr eater instal led), which includes Access da tabase soft ware. 1.

3-4 Using the Update Utility 4. Click Edit Labe l to chan ge the lab el’s wo rding, offset ti me, and ch oose to prin t the time on the label. The Edit Label Data screen ap pears. 5. Change any necessary text for the lab el or offset time. 6. Decide if you want t o print the time on the l abel.

Using the Update Utility 3-13 Communication Settings The Upda te Utility scans your computer for avai lable commu nication port s and adds them to the Com Port list box. To display th e communic ation settings : 1. From the Main scre en, click S etup , Com Port .
3-14 Using the Update Utility To update the keypad/te rminal: 1. Connect t he null modem cabl e provided i n the software kit from the compu ter to the keypad . 2. On the main menu select All to update the application and the data files . Selec t Data Only to update ju st the data sent to the keypad.

4-2 Care and Maintenan ce Cleaning the Printhead Remember to clean the printhead ever y time you load a new label ro ll into the printe r. Caution: You must tu rn off the printer’s po wer before cleaning th e printhead. To clean th e printhe ad while printing , you may lose your data when you t urn off the print er.
Troubleshooting 5-1 TROUBLESHOOTING Problem Action Indicator light is off when the prin ter is turned on. Check the power connections from the power supp ly to the printer and wall outle t. See "Connecting the Printer’s Power Supply” in Chap ter 1 for more informati on.

Troubleshooting 5-3 Problem Action Label exits partially out of the printer or skips a label. A label may be caught in the printer . See “Clearing Label Jams” in Chapter 4 for more informati on. Make sure the labels are loaded correctly and that the y are the Paxar /Monarch labels recommended for this application.
5-4 Troubleshooting Problem Action Test label does not print. Make sure the sup ply is loaded correctly. Make sure the die cut sen sor is in the correct position (was not accidentally moved while loading supplies) . See “Checking the Die Cut Sensor,” in Chapter 1 for more informati on.
