Int rod uc tion This manual describes the funct ional, mechanical and interface speci fi- cations for the Medalist ® Pro 6450 and the M edal ist Pro 6451 hard disc drives. The drives are r eferred to throughout thi s manual by their m odel numbers, ST36450A for the Medalist Pro 6450 and ST36451A fo r the Medalist Pro 6451.
The ATA commands with specific applicat ions for these drives and the Seagate-unique comm ands the drives us e are discussed in Secti on 3.0 on page 25. A com plete list of t he commands the dri ves support are found in the table on page 27. The fol lowing is a summary of t he drives’ features: Capacity • 6.

2.0 Co nfigur ing and m ou nting the dr ive This section contains the spec ifications and instructions for configuring and mounting t he drive. 2.1 Han dling and static -disch arge prec autio ns After you unpack the drive, and before you install it in a system, be careful not t o damage i t through mishandling.
2.2 I/ O cable and con necto r The driv e uses a 40-pin, male I/O connector with two rows of t wenty pins each and a notch for keying. Pin 20 is removed for keying purposes. A drawing of the I/O connector is shown in Figure 2. Pin 1 i s located near the 4-pin power connec tor when the I/O connector is mounted.
2. 4 O ptio ns j ump er bl ock The options jumper block (J5), shown in Figure 3, is us ed to configure the drives for operation. It is the 8-pin dual header between the I / O connector and the power connector. Pin 1 is located next t o the power connector and is farthest f rom the print ed circuit board.
2.4. 1 Master /slave c o nfig uratio n Use the f ollowi ng settings t o configur e the driv e as a master or a slav e. One dri ve onl y. The drive is configured at the fact ory for single-drive operation. No jumpers are required for single-drive operation.
2.4. 2 Altern ate cap aci ty jump er This jumper lowers the drive capacity by setting the default translation to 4.092 cyl inders. Some BIOSs that only auto-detect may require this jumper . Place a jumper on pins 1 and 2 of t he J5 options jum per block to enable this option.
2.5 M ount ing t he driv e You can mount the dr ive i n any orientati on. Use the set of mounting gui delines below that are appropri ate to the type of mounting holes used: either bottom mounting holes or side mounting holes. Refer to Figure 6 on page 23 for mounti ng dimensions.
