27 English Indicators The computer has serveral easy-to-read status indicators. The front panel indicators are visible even when the co mputer cover is closed up. 1. Charging: The light shows amber when the battery is charging. 2. Fully charged: The light sho ws green when in AC mode.
28 English Easy-launch buttons Located above the keyboard are four button s. These buttons are called easy-launch buttons. They are: mail, Web browser, Emp owering Key < > and one user-programmable button. Press < > to run the Acer Empowering Technology.
29 English Touchpad The built-in touchpad is a pointing device that senses movement on its surface. This means the cursor respon ds as you move your finger across the surface of the touchpad. The central location on the palmrest provides optimum comfo rt and support.
30 English Note: When using the touchpad, keep it — and your fingers — dry and clean. The touchpad is sensitive to finger movement; hence, the lighter the touch, the better the response. Tapping harder will not increase the touchpad's responsiveness.
31 English Using the keyboard The keyboard has full-sized keys, a numeric keypad, cu rsor, lock, Windows, function and special key s. Lock keys and sepa rate numeric keypad The keyboard has three lock keys which you can toggle on and off. 33 English Hotkeys The computer employs hotkeys or key combinations to access m ost of the computer's controls like screen brightness and the BIOS utility. To activate hotkeys, press and hold the <Fn> key before pressing the other key in the hotkey combinatio n.

42 English Frequently asked questions The following is a list of possible situations that may arise during the use o f your computer. Easy solutions are provided for each o ne. I turned on the power, but the computer does not start or boot up. Look at the power indicator: • If it is not lit, no power is being supplied to the co mputer.
43 English • If headphones, earphones or externa l speakers are connected to the line- out port on the computer, the internal speakers auto matically turn off. I want to eject the optical drive t ray without turning on the power. There is a mechanical eject hole on the o ptical drive.

Use this conditioning p rocess for all new batteries, or if a battery has n't been used for a long time. If the computer is to be stored for more than two weeks, you are advised to remove the battery pack from the unit.
48 English To remove a battery pack: 1 Slide the battery release latch to release the bat tery. 2 Pull the battery from the battery bay. Charging the battery To charge the battery, first make sure that it is correctly installed in the battery bay. Plug the AC adapter in to the computer, and connect to a mains power outlet.
49 English English Battery-lo w warning When using batter y power pay attention to the Win dows power meter. Warning: Connect the AC adapte r as soon as possible after the battery-low warning app ears. Data will be lost if the battery to become fully depleted and the computer sh uts down.

54 English Cinema If your computer came with a DVD driv e, you can play mov ies from DVDs and video CDs ( VCDs) with the Cinema func tion of Acer Arcade. Th is player has the features and controls of a typical DVD player. When you insert a disk into the DV D drive, the movie begins playing automatically.
55 English Album Acer Arcade lets you view digital photos individually or as a slid e show, from any available drive on your computer. Click the Album button on the Arcade Home page to show the Albu m main page. The content area on the right shows both indi vidual pictures and folders.

Ejecting a PC Card Before ejecting a PC Card: 1 Exit the application using the card. 2 Left-click on the PC Card icon on th e taskbar and stop the card operation.
74 English ExpressCard The ExpressCard is the newest version of th e PC Card. It is a smaller and faster interface that further enhances the usability and expanda bility of your computer. 75 English Installing memory Follow these steps to install memory: 1 Turn off the computer, unplu g the AC adapter (if connected) and remove the battery pack. Then turn the computer over to access its base. 2 Remove the screws from the memory co ver; then lift up and remove the memory cover.

PAL/SECAM and NTSC s ystems 1 Plug the PAL/SECAM c able’s RF plug into yo ur notebook’s RF jack. 2 Connect the other end to yo ur TV antenna cable, using the NTSC c onverter if necessary.
77 English To set up the antenna: 1 Push gently at the top u ntil the bottom section pops out. 2 Pull the bottom up until it is positio ned at 90 degrees to the antenna body . 3 To ensure good reception, th e antenna can be positioned on to p of your notebook display using the special clip , as shown below.
78 English AV-in cable (for selected models) The AV-in cable can b e used to connect your note book to a VHS player or camcorder for viewing, ca pturing and recording vid eo clips. 1 Plug the single end of the cab le into the AV-input po rt of your notebook.
79 English BIOS utility The BIOS utility is a hardware config uration program built into your computer 's BIOS. Your compu ter is already properly c onfigured and optimized, and you do no t need to run this utility. However, if you encounter configuration problems, you may need to run it.
80 English Using software Playing DVD movies When the DVD drive module is installed in the optical drive bay, you can p lay DVD movies on your computer. 1 Eject the DVD disk. Important! Whe n you launch the DVD pl ayer for the first time, the program asks you to enter the re gion code.
