Getting Started 6 Section 1: Getting Star ted This section explains how to get started wi th your phone by installing and charging the batter y , installing th e SIM card and optional memor y card, and setting up your voice mail. Before using your phone for the firs t time, you’ll need to install and charge the batt ery and install the SIM card.
7 T ext Convention s This manual provides condensed in formation abou t how to use your phone. T o make this possible , the following text conventi ons are used to represent often-used steps: Example: “From the Home screen, press ( Menu ) ➔ Setting s ➔ Wirele ss and network ➔ Bluetooth settings .
Getting Started 8 T o replace the battery cover: 䊳 Position the batter y cover over t he batter y compartment and pre ss dow n until you hear a click . SIM Card Over view Import ant!: Before removing or replacing the SIM card, make sure the phone is switched off.
9 T o remove the SIM card: 1. If installed, re move the battery from its co mpartment (1 and 2). The battery can bloc k the proper remov al of the SIM card from the slot. 2. Carefully slide the SI M card out of the SIM card socke t. Note: If the card is not inserted correctly, the phone will not detect it and nor service will be available.
Getting Started 10 Re moving the microSD Mem or y Car d 1. Remove the battery cover . 2. Firmly pres s the card into the slot and rele ase it. The card should pop partially out of the slot. 3. Remove the card from the slot. Batter y Before using your phone for the fi rst time, install t he batter y and charge it full y .
11 Charging the Batter y Y our phone is powered by a rechar geab le Li-ion batte ry . A wall charger , which is used for charging the battery , is included with your phone. Use only approved batteries and chargers. Ask your local Samsung dealer for further details.
Getting Started 12 Note: This illustration displays both the correct and incorrect orientation for connecting the charger . If the charger is incorrectly connected, damage to the accessory port will occur therefore voiding the phone’s warranty .
13 Extending Y our Ba tter y Life Active applications, light levels, Bluetooth usage, and GPS functional ity all act to drain your battery . The following is a list of helpful tips that can help conserve your batter y power: • Use the Power Control shortcut bar .

Note: A green bar displayed beneath the icon means the application is active (turned on). The green bar is removed from benea th the icon when the feature is deactivated (turned off).

Creating a New Google Account Y ou should create a Go ogle ™ Account when you first use your device in order to fully ut ilize the functionalit y .
Getting Started 16 Note: If you already have a Google account, you only need to sign in. T o create a new Google Account from the We b : 1. From a computer , launch a W e b bro wser and navigate to www .google.com . 2. On the main page , click Sign-in ➔ Create an account now .
17 For new users, follow the instruct ions below to set up voice mail: Note: Voicemail setup may be different depending on your network. 1. From the Home screen, tap and then touch and hold the key until the phone dials voi ce mail. Y ou may be prompted to enter a password.

Understanding Y our Phone 24 Displays your curren t battery charge level is very low. Shows your current battery only has three percent power remaining and will immediately shutdown. Represented as a blinking icon. Displays when connected to the EDGE network.

Understanding Y our Phone 26 Notificatio n Bar The Notifica tion area indicates new message events (data sync status, new messages, calendar ev ents, call status , etc). Y ou can expand this area to provide more detailed informa tion about the current on-screen notification icons.
27 Function K eys Y our phone comes equipped with fo ur main function keys that can be used on any screen: Menu , Home , Back , and Search . Menu Key The Menu key ( ) activate s an availabl e menu function for the current screen or application.
Understanding Y our Phone 28 Search Key The Search key ( ) displays the Goog le Search box that can be used to search for either a key term both on the phone and online. In some i nstances, this key opens a sear ch box specif ic only to the current application.

From an open Voice Search dialog, speak the following words to access addition al features: • voice actions (such as: [your query]) allows you to search the web by speaking the search parameters.

31 • Primary Shortcut s : are four shortcuts present throughout all of the available screens and can be used to bo th na vigate within the device or launch any of the following functions: – Phone ( ) launches the phone -related screen functions (D ialer , Call logs, F avorites, and V oicemail).
Understanding Y our Phone 32 Screen Navigation Using the touch screen display and the keys, you can navigate the features of your phone and enter characters. The following conventions are used in this manu al to describe the na vigation action in the pro cedures.
33 • Rotate : Automatically change the screen orientation from portrait to landscape by turning the device sideways. F or example: rotate to landscape orientation when entering text, to provide a larger keyboard, or when viewing web conte nt to minimize scrolling.

35 Using Context Me nus Context menus (also called pop- up menus) contain options that apply to a speci fic item on the s c reen. They funct ion similarly t o menu options that appear when you right c lick your mouse on your desktop computer . 䊳 T ouch and hold an item on-s creen to open its context menu.

37 Audio Postcard Allows you to selec t a frame, take a pi cture and then record a voice message up to one minute long and send it as an Audio Postcard. For more in formatio n, refer to “Sending an Audio P ostcard” on page 98. Calculator Launches the on -screen calculator application.

41 Navigatio n Launches a Web-based na vigation application. Caution!: T raffic data is not real-time and directions may be wrong, dangerous, prohibited, or involve ferries. For more information, refer to “Navigation” on page 142. News & Weather Launches a Web-based news and weather feed based on your current location.

43 Customizing the Screens Y ou can customize the Home sc reens (pane ls) to display the Widgets, Shortcuts, Folders, or Wallpapers. For example, one screen could cont ain the Music Player sh ort cut and other form s of media, while another screen mi ght contain communicati on apps such as Gmail and IM.
Understanding Y our Phone 44 Import ant!: Y our phone can only contain at most seven screens and at least one screen. T o delete a screen: 1. Press ➔ and then tap Edit ( ). 2. T ouch a nd dra g the undesired screen down to the Remove tab () . 3. Press to return to the main Home screen.

Manag ing Shor tcuts Note: T o move a shortcut from one screen to another , you must carefully touch and hold the shortcut and slowly drag it to the edge of the screen. As the shortcut turns light blue, you can begin to move it to the adjacent screen.
Understanding Y our Phone 46 T o delete a shortcut: 1. Press to go to the Home screen. 2. T ouch and hold the desired short cut. This unlocks it from its location on the current screen.
47 Creating and M anaging a Folder Folde rs hold items that y ou want to organize and store together on the workspace. T o create a new on-screen folder: 1. Press to go to the Home screen . 2. T ouch and hold an empt y area of the screen. 3. From the Add to H ome scr een window tap Folders .
Memory Card 48 Section 3: Memor y Car d Y our device lets you use a microSD ™ (SD) or microSDHC ™ card (also referred to a s a memory card) to expand avai lable memory space. This secure digi tal card e nables you to exc hange images, music, and data betw een SD-compatible devi ces.
49 Important!: DO NO T remove a microSD card while the device is accessing or transferring files. Doing so will result in loss or damage of data. Make sure your battery is fully charged before using the microSD card. Y our data may become damaged or lost if the batter y runs out while you are using th e microSD card.
Memory Card 50 SD card Memo r y Status T o view the memor y allocat ion for your external SD c ard: 䊳 Press ➔ and then tap ( Settings ) ➔ SD card and phone storage . The availabl e memory displays under the T otal space and Av ailable space headings.
51 Section 4: Call Functions and Contacts List This section describes features a nd functionality associated with making or answering calls, and the Contacts list, which is used to store contact info rmation. Displaying Y our Phone Number 䊳 Press ➔ and then tap ( Settings ) ➔ About phone ➔ Status .
Call Functions and Contacts List 52 Dialing Options When you enter numbers on the Keypad, you will see three on- screen options. From the keypad screen, use one of the fo llowing options: • Call ( ) to call the entered number . • Delete ( ) to delete digits from the current number .
53 Prefix Dialing When activated, this feature au tomatically prep ends a string of numbers (such as an area code ) to any dialed number . This feature is usefu l for international di aling, or dialing within an ar ea code where all the call s you make for a period of ti me use one prefix.
Call Functions and Contacts List 54 4. Ta p Delete . Using the V oice Dialer Voice dialer is a voice recogni tion software used to activ ate a wide variety of functions on your phone. 1. From the Home screen, tap ( Applications ) ➔ ( Voice D ialer ).
55 3. Use the keypad to enter the addi tional numbers th a t will be dialed auto matically after the second pause. Tip: Y ou can create pauses longer than two seconds by entering multiple 2-sec pauses.
Call Functions and Contacts List 56 Setting Up Speed Dial Entri es Import ant!: Speed dial location #1 is reserved for Voicemail. No other number can be assigned to this slot. 1. From the Home screen, tap . 2. Press and then tap Speed dial setting . The Speed dial screen displays a virtual keyp ad with the numbers 1 through 9.
57 4. Press to return to the previous screen. Making a Ca ll Using Speed Dial Y ou can assign a short cut numbe r to a phone number in the Contacts List for speed dialing. 1. From the Home screen, tap . 2. T ouch and hold a spee d dial location (numbers 2-9, or 1 if you are dialing voice mail) unt i l the number begins to dial.
Call Functions and Contacts List 58 Note: When you select an open network you are automatically connected. 2. From the Home screen, tap ➔ ( Wi-Fi Ca lling ). 3. T a p the slider to activate Wi-F i Calling. The slider shows On . Y our device connects to the T -Mobile Network.
59 4. If prompted, tap Confirm to register the service on the network (for first time users). 5. Use the phone D i aler , call log, or contact s list to make a call.
Call Functions and Contacts List 60 Adjusting the Call V o lume During a call, use t he Volu me keys on the left side of t he phone, to adjust the earpiece volum e. 䊳 Press the Up volume key to increase th e volume level and the Down volume key to dec rease the level.
61 Muting a Call 1. Ta p ( Mute off ) so the other caller cannot hear you speaking. 2. Ta p ( Mute on ) so to turn mute off and re sume your conversa tion. Switching to B l uetooth Head set 1. While on a call, s witch to the Bluetooth headset instead of speaker by tapping Headset .
Call Functions and Contacts List 62 3. Ta p Add call , enter the second phone number and tap . The first caller is plac ed on hold. 4. Wait fo r the second ca ller to answer th e incoming c all and tap Join . The two calls are now joined into a mult i-party call and display in the order in which they were called.
63 Dropping One Par ticipant 1. Press and then tap Manage Conference Call . 2. T ap to the right of the number to drop. The participant is disconnect ed and you can continue the call with the other participant.
Call Functions and Contacts List 64 Access ing t he Call Logs T ab 1. From the Home screen, tap ➔ Call logs tab. 2. T ap an entr y to view avai lable options. Note: The Call logs tab only records calls that occur while the phone is turned on. If a call is received while it is turned off, it will not be included in your calling history.
65 Call Logs - C aller Ov er view • T a p a contact entry name or number to r eveal the call options screen: •C a l l allows you t o redial th e entr y by name or number . • Send message allows you to create a new t ext messa ge to the selected entry.

67 Viewing Missed Ca lls from Lock Sc reen When you are unable to answer a call for any reason and your screen is locked, the number of missed call s are display ed on the Lock screen immedia tely after a call i s missed. T o view a missed call immediate ly: 1.
Entering T e xt 68 Section 5: Entering T ext This section describes ho w to select the desired text input method when entering characters into your phone. This section also describes the predictive text entry system that reduces the amount of key strokes a ssoci ated with entering text.
69 Using the Swype K eyboar d Swype™ is the default text i nput method that allo ws you to enter a word by sliding your finger or st ylus from letter to letter , lift ing your finger between words. SWYPE uses error correcting algorithms and a language mode l to predict the next word.

71 Th e Samsung Keypad This device has a built -in, QWER TY keypad (portrait mode) or keyboard (landscape mode). Using the QWER TY keypad/ keyboard, you can type letter , numbers, punctuation, and other characters. T o use the Samsung keypad you mu st first configure the settings to default to the Samsung ke ypad.
Entering T e xt 72 Using Abc Mode 1. From within an active text entry screen, rotate the phone counterclockwise to a landscape orientation, if desired. The following screen displays: 2. T a p to configure the keyb oard for ABC mode. Once in this mode, the text input type shows .
73 Using Sym bol/Numeric Mode Use Symbol/Numeric Mode to add numbers, symbols, or emoticons. 1. Access a screen from where you ca n enter text. 2. Rotate the ph one counte rc lockwise to a landsca pe orientation, if desired. 3. T ap t o configure the keyboard for Symbol mode.
Entering T e xt 74 • Word compl etion point sets how many lette rs should be entered before a word predi ction is ma de. Choose f rom 2 lett ers, 3 lett ers, 4 letters, or 5 letters.
75 Section 6: Contacts This section explains how to use and manage your Contacts List. Y ou can save phone numbers to your phone’ s memory. Accounts From the Accounts menu you decide if you want applications to synchronize, send, and receive data at any given time , or if you want the applications to sync hronize automatically .
Contacts 76 Contacts List Cre ating a Contact The default storage l ocation for saving phone numbers to your Contacts List is your phone’ s built-in memory . If existing Googl e and Corporate email accounts have been synchronized to your phone, these will be made available to your device during the creation of new entries.
77 Note: Y ou can also add a new contact by entering a number from the keypad and pressing and then ta p Add to Contacts ➔ ( Create contact ). Continue with step 3. 3. T ap a destination type ( Phone , SIM , T -Mobile Contacts backup, Google , or Microsoft Exchange ) (depending on where you want to save th e new contact information).

79 Editing Contact Info r mation 1. From the Home screen, tap . 2. T ap a contact name from t he list. 3. Press and select Edit . Note: Y ou can also access an entry’s context menu by touching and holding an entry then tapping Edit . 4. Edit the contact info rmation then tap Save .

Delet ing Co ntact s This option allows you to delete your contacts. Y ou can delete all your entries from your phone’ s memor y , your SIM card, FDN, or All.
81 Contact Menu Options 1. From the Home screen, tap . 2. T ouch and hold an entry to reveal the cont ext menu. The following options display: •E d i t : allows you to edit the currently select ed Contacts entry. • Delete : allows you to delete the currently select ed Contacts entry.
Contacts 82 Joining Contac t Infor mation Most people now mainta in multiple emai l accounts, social networking logins, and other simi lar account informa tion. For example, a Facebook account lo gin name might differ f rom a corporate email account login because they are ma intained separately and for diffe rent groups of people.
83 Important!: It is the second contact image that is displayed for both buy the first contact’ s name that is used. For example: If Amy (original entry) is joined with Julie (second entry). Julie appears to disappear and only Amy remains. T ap the Amy entry (showing the Julie image) to view both.
Contacts 84 Sending a Namecard A Namecard contains contac t info rmation, and can be sent to recipients as a Virtual Business Ca rd (V -card) attachment using Bluetooth, Google Ma il, or as a message. 1. From the Home screen, tap . 2. T ap a Contact entry.
85 Copying Contact Inf or mation Copying Con t act Information to the S IM Card The default storage location fo r saving phone num bers to your Contacts list is your phone’ s built-in memo ry . This procedure allows you to copy numbers save d to the phone’ s memor y , onto the SIM card.
Contacts 86 Synchronizing Contacts Syncing data from your managed accounts allows you to add and manage a new or existing contact from your online or remote accounts to your phone . Prior to syncing, you must fir st have an active Google or Micr osoft Ex change account with current Contact entries, and be signed into your accoun t via the phone.
87 3. Ta p Done . Get F riends When you synchronize a pplicat ions such as Facebook, T w itter , MySpace, a corporate email account, or Google , using the Get Friends op tion synchronizes the data from the selected account type with your Contacts list.
Contacts 88 4. Ta p Facebook from the Integrated contact accounts section of the Add an account screen. • This proce ss adds your Faceb ook account to the list of managed and synchroniz ed accounts. I n this case, y our Facebook con tacts are synchron ized with you r phone’s Contacts list.
89 Additional Contact Options Sending an E mail to a Contact Note: Contacts must contain and email account and address before you can use the Send email feature. 1. From the Home screen, tap . 2. Press and then tap More ➔ Send email . Contacts that contain an email address display .
Contacts 90 Groups This feature allows you to add a ne w or existing co ntact to a call group. This group can be one of the already present groups (Family , Friends, or Work) or a user -created gro up. Creat ing a New C aller Group 1. From the Home screen, tap ➔ Groups tab.
91 Sending a Message to a Grou p 1. From the Home screen, tap ➔ Groups tab. 2. T ap an existing group, and press and then tap Send message . 3. Select the recipie nts of the new mes sage (indicated by a gree n checkmark). If an entr y contains multiple phone numbers, each must be selected indiv idually .
Messages 92 Section 7: Messages This section describes how to send or receive different ty pes of messages. It also explains th e features and functionality associated with messaging.
93 3. If adding a recipient from eithe r Recent, Contacts, or Group, touch the contact to plac e a checkmark then ta p Add . The contact displays in the recipient field. Note: For the Group option, if the number of recipients is less than 10, all members in the group are added.

95 T o reply to a text messa g e: 1. From the Home screen, tap . 2. While the message is open, tap the Ty p e t o compose field and then type your reply message. 3. Compose your reply . Y our texts are colored Blue and your caller’s reply’ s are Y ellow.
Messages 96 Deleting Messages Delet ing a si ngle messa ge 1. From the Home screen, tap . 2. T ouch and hold a message, then select Delete thread . 3. At the prompt, tap Ye s to delete or No to cancel. Deleting multiple m essages 1. From the Home screen, tap .
97 • Message center : allows you to enter the number of your message center where yo ur messages reside whil e the system is atte mpting to deliver them. • Input mode : allows y ou to set th e input mode for your text messages. Ch oose GSM Alphabet , Unicode, or Automatic.
