Getting Started 5 Section 1: Getting Star ted This section explains how to start using your phone by first configuring your hardware, activa ting your service, and then setting up your voice mail. Setting Up Y our Phone Prior to use it is necessar y to install both the ba tter y and SIM into their corresponding internal co mpartments.
6 Note: If the card is not inserted correctly , the phone does not detect the SIM card. Re-orient the card back into the slot. Installing the Mem or y Card Y our phone also supports the use of a memory card (microSD™) for data storage of such things as data, music, pictures, and video files.
Getting Started 7 3. Replace the ba ttery co ver onto the back of the phon e (3). 4. While applying pressure, slide the top portion towards the camera area (4) until yo u hear a light click. Note: Make sure the battery is properly installed before s witching on the phone.
8 2. Plug the flat end o f the T ra vel Adapter into the Power/ Accessor y Interface connector a nd the other end int o a standard AC wall outlet . 3. When charging is finished, first unplug the ad apter’ s power plug from the AC wall outlet and then remove the flat end from the int erface connector jack on the ph one.

16 Using the Multitasking Menu This key ( ) launches the Mu ltitask m enu that can be activated f rom within any a ctive window or page on the phone. There is no need to st op what you are doing, if you quickly want to jump out and activate another common feature.
Understanding Y our Phone 17 Multitask Functions Pressing the Multitasking k ey ( ) on the left side of the handset, allows you to choose from one of the following functions: • Call : allows you to make a voice call while using the handset for other tasks.
18 Section 3: Menu Naviga tion This section explains the menu na vigation for your phone. The a877 has done away with the n eed for navigation wheels or keypads. The a877 is completely na vigable by either an onscreen touch or scroll. • T ouching an onscreen op tion activ ates the fea ture.

When scrolling through a list make sure not to touch or press individual entries on the list as this will open the list entry. 22 W idgets The Widget bar pro vides quic k access to mini-programs (widgets). This bar (loc ated at the left of the Idle screen) gives you information a t a glance and provides easy a ccess to freque.
Menu Navigation 23 Analog Clock : displays the current time on an analog clock. • Drag and dro p the Analog clock onto the desktop to view the time in an analog format. Digital Cl ock : displays the curren t time on a digital clo c k . • Drag and dro p the Digital clock onto the desktop to view the tim e in a digital f ormat.
24 Calendar : allows you t o access the Calenda r feature. With the Calendar feature, you can: • Consult the calendar by month, week, or day . • Set schedules and no te anniversaries. • Write memos to ke ep track of you r schedule. • Set an alarm to act as a rem inder , if necessar y .
Menu Navigation 25 Widget Bar Navigation Y ou can drag the widgets to th e display screen to use th e application or feature, then drag it back to the Widget Bar when you are finished. Note: Many widgets can be used directly from the widget bar without dragging them onto the screen (ex: Bluetooth and Alarms).
26 R earr anging Widg ets Y ou can also customize the Widget bar by arranging the location of your current widgets. This ca n help you place your frequen tly used (favorite) widgets at the top of the list.

28 Section 4: Call Functions This section describes how to make or answer a ca ll. It also includes the features and function ality associ ated with making or answering a call. Cor re cting an Enter ed Number Use the following steps to co rrect a mis-typed entry when dialing. 1. After entering a numbe r using th e keypad. • If you make a mistake , touch to erase a sing le character .
30 Making a Call from the Address Book Y ou can store phone numbers that you use regularly on the SIM card or in the phone’s memory . These e ntries are collectiv ely called the Address Book . For further details ab out the Address Book feature, see “F inding an Address Book Entry” on page 86.
Call Functions 31 Dialing Options From th e Idle screen and Main menu, you ha ve the option to access the Dia ler and initiate a ca ll. When you manual ly enter numbers from the Dial er , you will see three dialing options displayed on the screen. • Call : dials the current number entered using the onscreen keypad.
32 7. During a Video S hare session, your op tions are displaye d as icons on the screen. T ouc h the corresponding icon to activate the fe ature. Tip: T o stop the video share call press the Stop key. 8. A pop-up message displays “ Video Sharing has been Stopped.
Call Functions 33 Viewing All Calls 1. From t he Recent Calls menu, touch the drop-down and select the All option. All ca lls made, received, and m issed are listed.
34 Viewing the Details of a Missed Ca lls T o view the detail s of a selected mis sed call, use the f ollowing steps: 1. T ouch the Missed Calls dialog. A list of t he most recent ly missed calls is displayed. 2. T ouch the desired missed call. In formation for that caller is then displayed within a Mi ssed Calls page.

36 5. Enter the user -defined password and touch Confirm to reset all counters. For more information, refer to “Change Phone Password” on page 66. • Press or to cancel th is operati on. Data Counter Data Counter refers to the amount of data (volume) to and from the phone.
Call Functions 37 In-Call Options During an active ca ll there are seve ral functions availa ble by touching a correspondi ng onscreen button. • Spkr On/Off routes the phone’ s audio through either the speaker or through the earpiece. – Slide Speak er to On to route the audio through the speaker .
38 Switching Betw een Calls When you have an acti ve call and a call on hold, you may switch between th e two calls, changing the one on hold to active and placing the other on hold.
Call Functions 39 Import ant!: For more information, see “Responsible Listening” on page 176. Switchin g of f the Micr ophone (Mute) Y ou can temporaril y switch your pho ne’s microph one off, so that the other person cannot hear you.
40 Note: The Join option combines all of the calls you have established with your phone (both active and on hold). Swap places the current call on hold and then activates the previous call. This feature joins all of the calls you have es tab lished with your phone (both active and on hold) into a m ulti-party call.
Entering T ext 41 Section 5: Entering T ext This section outlines how to sele ct the desired text entry mode when entering characters using th e phone keypad or the nested, QWERTY ke yboard-style keypad. Th is section also describes how to use the T9 pr edictive text en try system to reduce the nu mber of key strokes ne ed ed to enter text.
42 T ext Input Options Y our phone has the foll owing text input modes: • T9 ( ): this mode allows you to enter wo rds with only one keystroke per letter .
Entering T ext 43 • Emoticons ( ) 2. T ouch the text mode you desire . The text mode changes to the mode you touc hed. Using T9 Mode T9 is a predictive text i nput mode that allows you to ke y in any character using single ke ystrok es. This text input m ode is based on a built-in dictionary .
44 • T o enter periods, hyphens, and other special characters, touch the T ext Input button (bottom center), select Symbols ( ) and then touch the corresponding key . If the symbol does not display on the initial screen, touch the left or right arrow key to disp lay the next set of symbols.
Entering T ext 45 Using Numeric The Numeric mode enables you to enter numbers into a text message. 䊳 T ouch t he T ex t Input M ode bu tton at t he bottom of the screen and select Numeric ( ), then touch the keys corresponding to the digits you want to enter .
46 3. Use your finger tip to write out each ch aracter . T ouch the Shift key to use uppercase letters. T ouch the Space key to create a space bet ween lett ers, numbers, or symbols. Note: T o properly recognize the written characters and to p revent scratching of the LCD, do not use script.
Entering T ext 47 The available T ext Input modes are: abc , Abc , ABC , Numeric , and Symbo ls . Each option causes the Ha ndwriting mode to behave differently . Handwriting Mode-Entering Character s 1. T ouch the T ext Input Mode bu tton at the bottom of the screen and select Abc .

The available T ext Input modes are: T9 , 1@ , Emo , and Abc . Refer to the T ext Input mode in the uppe r right hand corner to identify which mode you are currently in.

Changing Y our Settings 65 Lock Phone When the Phone L ock phone feature is enab led, the phone is locked and yo u must enter the 4 to 8 digit phone password each time the phone is sw itched on. Note: Y ou will be prompted to crea te a password the first time this feature is enabled.

68 Call Settings 䊳 From Idle mode, touch ➔ Settings ➔ Calls . Adjusting the Gene ral Call Settings 1. T ouch General and select from the fol lowing options: • Show My Number : allows you to select how your caller ID is handled when an outgoing call is initiated.
Changing Y our Settings 69 – Unreachable activates an automatic forwar d of all incoming calls only when you can not be r eached and your phone status is set to unreachable. – Cancel All cancels all call forwarding functions. • Call W aiting : this network ser vice info rms you when someone is trying to reach you during anoth er call.
70 De vice Name 1. From Idle mode, touch ➔ Settings ➔ Connectivity ➔ Bluetooth ➔ My Info . 2. T ouch the Name field, touch and hold to erase the current name. 3. Use the onscreen keypad/keybo ard to enter the new name for this device and touch .
Changing Y our Settings 71 Bluetooth Secure Mode When the Bluetooth Visibility is turned on, you r phone is wirelessly transmitting its phone n ame and status to every device within its range. This tr ansmission can pose a security risk and incite unauthorized connection to your pho ne.
72 Configuring Y our Phone’s USB Settings This menu selects the method of communication for the USB port. Note: The Bluetooth feature must first b e disabled bef ore initiatin g a USB connection with the phone. Prior to connecting the USB cable to the phone, install the latest version of the PC Studio application.
Changing Y our Settings 73 4. Select the parameter you want to edit: • Set Name : enter a profile na me. • Access Nam e : edit the access point name. • Auth T ype : select the t ype of authen tication used fo r this WAP connecti on: None, Normal, or Secure.

78 Phone Information This option allows you to see th e phone number on the SIM card (within the phone), the manufac turer , and the model number . This information may be necessary if talking to Customer Service in the event of a pro blem. 1. From Idle mode, touch ➔ Settings ➔ Phone Information .
Cellular Video 79 Section 7: Cellular Video Y our phone is equi pped with a WAP (Wireless Application Protocol) browser which a llows you to access the I nternet and download media file s directly to your phone. The se media files are displayed using the built-in Medi a Player .

84 Adding More Fields to a Number While in the process of creating a new en try or editing a n existing contact, you can add additional fields to the entry’ s list of information. 1. Within the open Co ntact Screen, touch ( Add More Fields ). 2. Place a checkmark adj acent to an individual fie ld by touching each entry .
