7 Mak e the T ransition fr om Pa p e r t o C A D W ith your decision to use AutoSketch ® , you have entered the world of computer-aided design (CAD). AutoSketch makes your drawings more precise and y ou more productive than you have been using paper as your design format.
8 | Chapter 2 Mak e the T ransition fr om Paper to CA D Dra w to Scale Drawing scale is something you consid er when laying out your drawing. Y ou establish scale differently in CAD th an you do with manual drafting. W ith manual drafting, you must deter- mine the scale of a vi ew before you start drawing.
Organize Dra wi ng Information | 9 Organiz e Dra wing Information In both manual drafting and CAD, you need a wa y to organi ze your draw ing content—a method for sepa rating, sorting, and edit ing specific drawing data. W ith manual drafting, you can separate information onto individua l transparent overlays.
10 | Chapter 2 Mak e the T ransition from Pa per to C AD Dra w Efficiently Draw with less effo rt and revise with more speed: these are the two main reasons you use CAD. AutoSketch has a complete set of d rawing and editi ng tools to help eliminate repe titive, time-consu ming drafting tasks.
Dra w Accurately | 11 Dra w Accurately Engineering and architectural d rawing require a high degree of accuracy . With CAD, you draft more accurately than with manual method s. On paper , you must draw objects care- fully to ensure correct size and alignment.
12 | Chapter 2 Mak e the T ransition from Pa per to C AD Vie w Y our Dra wing The power of CAD makes it easy for yo u to quickly view different parts of your design at diffe rent magni fications. When you draft on paper and need to work on anoth er se ction, you must physically move to that area of your drawing.
Modify Y our Dra wing | 13 Modify Y our Dra wing Revisions are a part of an y drawing project. Whether you work on paper or with CAD, you will need to modi fy your drawing in some way . On paper , you must manually erase and redraw to make revisions to your drawing.
14 | Chapter 2 Mak e the T ransition from Pa per to C AD Use Standar d Symbols Symbols have long been us ed in manual drafting as a way to represent real- world objects in a simplifi ed way . The ability to create and reuse standard symbols is one of CAD’ s greatest strengths.
Create Dimensions and T e xt | 15 Cr eate Dimensions and T ext Creating accurate dimensions a nd cons istent, legible text is a time-con sum- ing task for the manual dr after . CAD provides ways to streamline this task. When you work on paper , you typically draw to scale and th en add dimens ions and annotations.

32 | Chapter 3 AutoSk etch Basics Entities Entities are the fundamental elements of a d r a w i n g . T h e y c a n b e s i m p l e ( base entities), such as a single line, arc, cir cle, or po lyline, or they can be groups of drawing elements ( compound entities), such as sy mbols and dimensions.
Basic Featur es and Functionality | 33 Pr oper ties Properties are the individual qualities that de fine an entity . They are divided into three categories: ■ Geometric properties define an entity’s si ze, position, and so on. AutoSketch assigns geometric properti es automatically as you draw and edit.
34 | Chapter 3 AutoSk etch Basics Scale Drawing scale is the ratio be tween the actual size of the entities in a drawing and their size on printed outpu t. In conventional drafti ng, you scale the components of a drawing by using an architectural or engineering scale .
Basic Featur es and Functionality | 35 Examples of coordinates Dra wing Origin The drawing origin displays the x (horizontal), y (vertical), and (if isometric) z coordinates of a draw ing. AutoSketch lo cates most points in rela tion to the drawing o rigin.
36 | Chapter 3 AutoSk etch Basics Refer ence Grid A reference grid is a visual drawing aid t hat contai ns a pattern o f horizont al and vertical lines or d ots that repres ent a grid.
Basic Featur es and Functionality | 37 Tip Y ou can also change settings using th e Edit Grid button on the Standard toolbar . Grid Origin The grid origin is similar t o the draw ing origin i n functi on and appearance. However , the grid orig in serves as a referen ce point for grid coordinates only .
